If you want the closest overall alternative to Escape the Backrooms, start with Lethal Company. It keeps the central appeal of entering dangerous spaces with friends, searching for valuable resources and trying to get out, although its setting is abandoned moons rather than maze-like backrooms levels. For a different flavor, choose The Outlast Trials for team survival horror, GTFO for stealth and tactical shooting, R.E.P.O. for physics-based object retrieval, or Content Warning for chaotic, comedic filming sessions.

None of these games is an exact replacement. The right choice depends on whether your group values navigation, scavenging, stealth, combat, extraction, or social comedy. This guide separates those loops so a two-person group can choose without joining a large public lobby.

What makes a game feel like Escape the Backrooms?

Escape the Backrooms is listed on Steam as a one-to-four-player online co-op horror exploration game with more than 30 levels. Its appeal is cooperative movement through threatening spaces: players investigate, try to understand where to go, react to monsters and work toward an escape. That combination is a better baseline than simply looking for any game labeled “horror.”

The alternatives below preserve different parts of that formula. Some keep dangerous exploration but replace maze navigation with scavenging. Others make survival trials, stealth planning, combat, retrieval or filming the main objective. Treat the comparisons as evidence-based descriptions of each game’s stated premise, not as claims that their maps, enemies or escape systems are identical.

Lethal Company: the closest high-level loop

Why it is the first recommendation

Lethal Company is the strongest match when your group wants to enter a hostile place, search for useful resources and make a dangerous return with friends. Its cooperative exploration and resource-collection loop creates the same broad tension that attracts players to Escape the Backrooms: you are not merely walking through a horror map, and you are not fighting continuously. You are trying to complete a shared objective while the environment and creatures make every decision riskier.

The important difference is setting and structure. The game is built around collecting scrap on abandoned moons, whereas Escape the Backrooms is framed around escaping levels in a backrooms environment. That means it is a thematic and mechanical cousin, not a clone. Choose it when “search together, manage danger and get out” matters more than fluorescent corridors, liminal architecture or a specific escape puzzle.

Best for a private two-player session

For two friends who do not want a large public lobby, the shared scavenging objective is easy to understand: agree on who explores, who watches for danger and when the group should leave. You can treat each run as a communication exercise rather than assuming both players must follow the same route. Before purchasing, confirm the current invitation and lobby options on the official listing you will use; the available evidence does not establish every platform’s private-session behavior.

What to expect

  • Cooperative exploration in hazardous locations.
  • Resource collection as the practical reason to enter each area.
  • More emphasis on scavenging decisions than on solving a backrooms-style sequence of levels.
  • An Early Access label on the Steam listing, so features and balance may change.

The Outlast Trials: organized survival horror

Choose it for team pressure, not backrooms geography

The Outlast Trials is the better choice when your group wants psychological survival horror built around completing dangerous trials together. The premise supports cooperation under stress, but it is not presented as a backrooms exploration game. Its trial-based format gives your session a clearer scenario structure than an open-ended search through unfamiliar rooms.

This distinction matters for expectations. If your favorite moments in Escape the Backrooms are learning a strange environment and finding the route out, The Outlast Trials may feel more directed. If you prefer the pressure of staying alive, coordinating a team and enduring frightening encounters, the change in structure is likely a benefit.

Solo availability does not make it a solo recommendation

The official description also describes solo play, but the reason to select it for this list is its team-based survival-horror option. A pair can approach it as a coordinated challenge rather than relying on a large lobby. Confirm the current mode, party-size rules and platform version before planning a two-player purchase, because the available listing evidence does not establish a universal configuration.

Who should skip it

Skip this option if your group specifically wants non-linear backrooms navigation, a literal escape-room progression or a low-combat exploration loop. Its value is psychological team survival, not visual or structural similarity.

GTFO: stealth, tactics and cooperative combat

For groups that want every mistake to require a plan

GTFO is aimed at players who want deliberate stealth, tactical planning and cooperative shooting inside a hardcore horror-shooter framework. It is a strong recommendation for a group that enjoys whispering through a dangerous area, deciding when to move and coordinating a response when stealth fails.

Compared with Escape the Backrooms, the center of gravity shifts toward tactical pressure. You are not choosing it because the level design is a backrooms copy; you are choosing it because both games can make communication and shared awareness more important than individual heroics. The horror is tied to the consequences of poor preparation and noisy or poorly timed actions.

Two-player suitability

A two-person team should consider whether it wants a demanding tactical experience rather than a relaxed exploration session. Before starting, agree on roles, communication standards and how your group handles a failed attempt. Check the current official listing for supported party sizes and platform details; no universal cross-play or console claim is established here.

Best fit and poor fit

  • Best fit: players who enjoy stealth routes, coordinated combat and high consequence decisions.
  • Poor fit: players looking for mostly non-combat wandering, comedic panic or a literal maze-escape premise.

R.E.P.O.: object retrieval for larger groups

The objective changes from escape to extraction

R.E.P.O. is built around retrieving valuable objects, with physics-based interaction making the task itself part of the challenge. That gives it a different cooperative question: can your team move the target, protect the carrier and extract the value without losing control of the situation?

  • Game Night Excitement: Great for 1-5 conniving players - Includes 1 game board, 7 monster miniatures, 75 cards, 3 dice, movers, bases, placards, instructions, and more. Everything for a thrilling, monster-defeating experience.

The game therefore fits players who like the risk-and-reward side of horror more than the specific atmosphere of backrooms corridors. You still enter a threatening environment with a practical job to complete, but the job is object retrieval rather than finding the way through a sequence of levels.

Useful when your group is bigger than four

The Steam listing states support for up to six players and labels the game Early Access. That makes it the clearest option in this group for a larger private friend session, especially if four players is not enough. A two-person party can still consider it, but its stated six-player capacity is the notable reason to pick it over the source game.

Early Access qualification

Early Access means the product is still presented as in development on Steam. Treat the available feature list as a snapshot rather than a permanent promise, and recheck the official page for changes before buying. The listing does not establish a universal console release, current price or cross-play arrangement.

Content Warning: horror as a group performance

Choose it when the funny aftermath matters

Content Warning shifts horror toward social comedy. Steam lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, and the central activity is filming scary encounters. That makes the game a good choice for friends who want panic, improvisation and stories to share afterward rather than a solemn survival crawl.

The contrast with Escape the Backrooms is intentional. You are not selecting it for matching architecture or an equivalent escape objective. You are selecting it because both games can turn a frightening environment into a shared group experience, while Content Warning adds the performance of capturing what happened.

Cross-platform caution

The Steam listing’s cross-platform multiplayer wording is useful for mixed-device groups, but it should not be expanded into a guarantee that every console, storefront or edition can join every other one. Check the current official listing for your devices and region. Also confirm how invitations work if your group wants a private session rather than a public lobby.

What about Phasmophobia?

Phasmophobia appeared as a relevant comparator and in a Steam bundle during the search, but the available material did not provide a usable official description for this comparison. It is therefore not ranked alongside the five recommendations above. If supernatural investigation is specifically what your group wants, verify its current official feature list, party support, platforms and cross-play status before treating it as an alternative.

Pick the right game by the activity you want to repeat

Your priority Start with Why
Search dangerous spaces and bring back resources Lethal Company Closest broad loop: cooperative exploration plus collection, with abandoned moons replacing backrooms levels
Endure psychological team survival The Outlast Trials Its trial-based horror is organized around surviving frightening scenarios together
Plan stealth routes and fight tactically GTFO Its defining emphasis is deliberate stealth, strategy and cooperative shooting
Move valuable objects with many friends R.E.P.O. Physics-based retrieval and a Steam-listed capacity of up to six players
Laugh, record and share chaotic scares Content Warning Online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer support a social filming premise

How to choose for a two-player group

  1. Decide whether exploration or combat is the priority. Choose Lethal Company for the closest exploration-and-scavenging loop, GTFO for tactical combat, or The Outlast Trials for survival horror without treating any of them as a literal backrooms copy.
  2. Decide whether you want a serious or comic tone. The Outlast Trials and GTFO support more serious pressure; Content Warning is the deliberate comedy option.
  3. Decide whether the objective should be collecting or extracting. Scavenging points toward Lethal Company; carrying valuable objects points toward R.E.P.O..
  4. Check the current store listing for both players. Confirm that the same platform, edition and region are supported. Do not infer Game Pass inclusion, console availability, current pricing or cross-play from the Steam descriptions alone.
  5. Confirm the lobby setup before buying. If you do not want a public lobby, look for the current private-invite or friends-only option in the official listing and in the game’s current menu documentation.

Platform, price and cross-play checks

The available evidence is strongest for Steam-listed features. It does not establish an all-platform release, current regional price, discount, Game Pass inclusion or universal cross-play for every title. Those details change independently of the game’s genre and can vary by edition.

  • Check the official store page for each player’s operating system or console.
  • Confirm whether online multiplayer requires a platform subscription.
  • Read the current cross-play wording rather than assuming that “online co-op” means mixed-platform play.
  • Check whether the title is still in Early Access and whether that affects your expectations about updates or feature changes.
  • Verify the number of players supported by the exact edition you plan to use.

A practical first-night plan

For a pair moving from Escape the Backrooms, begin with Lethal Company if you want the least disruptive change in cooperative rhythm. Set a simple rule before the first run: one player focuses on navigation and information while the other watches the route, resources and threats. Leave room for the objective to change when the environment becomes unsafe.

If that feels too close to scavenging and you want a stronger genre shift, select by the new activity rather than by the word “horror.” Pick The Outlast Trials for survival scenarios, GTFO for stealth and tactical pressure, R.E.P.O. for object handling and a larger party, or Content Warning for filming-driven comedy. This approach prevents the most common disappointment: buying a game because it is described as similar, then discovering that the actual cooperative job is completely different.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: choose Lethal Company for the closest broad co-op exploration loop; choose The Outlast Trials, GTFO, R.E.P.O. or Content Warning when you specifically want survival trials, tactical stealth, object retrieval or comedic filming. Verify current platform, player-count, price and cross-play details before purchase.
