For a first shared game, start with Untitled Goose Game or Minecraft in Creative mode when a genuinely cooperative, low-stakes experience matters most. Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when short, familiar races sound more inviting than a campaign. Overcooked! 2 suits players who enjoy communication and time pressure, while It Takes Two is an excellent purpose-built co-op adventure for two older players—but its ESRB Teen rating makes it unsuitable as a default recommendation for young children.

This is a practical shortlist rather than a tested ranking. The right choice depends on age, content tolerance, control experience, pace, platform and whether you will play on the same device or online. Exact local-multiplayer support, player counts and edition requirements can vary, so check the current product listing for your platform before buying.

Quick comparison

Game Best fit How the play is structured Age and content notes Key limitation to check
Untitled Goose Game A new player who likes puzzles, humor and a shared objective Two players cooperate as geese to plan and perform pranks No age classification was established in the available material Confirm current platform availability and accessibility options
Minecraft A child or beginner who wants to build at their own pace Creative mode emphasizes building; Survival adds hunger and health mechanics ESRB E10+ for Fantasy Violence; the cited parental guide lists PEGI 7 Multiplayer setup depends on the edition and platform
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Someone who prefers quick races and familiar driving goals Primarily competitive racing rather than a shared campaign No specific rating detail was supplied here Do not assume particular assist settings without checking the exact edition
Overcooked! 2 Players who enjoy teamwork, communication and energetic challenges Cooperative cooking with tasks that must be coordinated under time pressure A family factsheet suggests age 8+; younger children may need help Older platform and subscription information needs current verification
It Takes Two Two older players wanting a campaign designed entirely around cooperation A two-player adventure built for local or online co-op ESRB Teen for Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence and Language Friend’s Pass is a first-chapter trial; one player must own the full game

No title here is a universal “best.” A game that is ideal for a confident eight-year-old may be frustrating for an adult who has never used a twin-stick controller, and a competitive race may be more welcoming than a story campaign for someone who dislikes being watched while learning.

What to look for in a first shared game

A clear shared goal

New players usually benefit when they can see what the pair is trying to accomplish. Untitled Goose Game gives both people the same objective: coordinate pranks as two geese. Minecraft Creative mode offers a self-chosen goal such as constructing a house or exploring a build. In both cases, the experienced player can explain one action at a time without turning the session into a lesson.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A shared goal is different from simply being in the same match. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, both players can race together, but each normally pursues their own finishing position. That can be fun, yet it is not the same safety net as solving a task together.

A forgiving pace

Look for a mode that leaves room to pause, ask questions and experiment. Building in Minecraft Creative mode is naturally open-ended. Goose Game’s prank-planning structure also lets partners discuss what to try next. By contrast, Overcooked! 2 deliberately creates urgency, so the same beginner may need more coaching and reassurance.

Controls that match the learner

Ask what the new player is comfortable doing: steering, moving a camera, pressing several buttons in sequence or handling simultaneous tasks. The available evidence does not establish detailed control or accessibility settings for every title, so check the game’s current options menu or product documentation rather than promising a specific assist feature.

Content that fits the age

Use the rating board for your territory and read its descriptors. A letter or number alone does not explain why a game received that classification. Minecraft’s ESRB listing is E10+ for Fantasy Violence, while It Takes Two is rated Teen for Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence and Language. Those are materially different starting points for a younger player.

A practical multiplayer arrangement

Decide whether you need couch play on one system, a local network session or online play from separate homes. Player counts, online requirements and available modes can change by platform and edition. Confirm those details before purchase, particularly for Minecraft and any title whose store page has multiple versions.

Game-by-game recommendations

Untitled Goose Game: the strongest low-stakes co-op starting point

Nintendo’s new-player guide describes a two-player cooperative mode in which two geese work together to plan pranks across the game. That structure makes the title easy to frame for a beginner: you are not competing for a score, and each person can contribute ideas about what to try.

It is a good match when the pair enjoys playful problem solving more than reflex challenges. The experienced player can demonstrate movement, then let the newcomer choose a target or experiment with an interaction. Because the objective is shared, a mistake belongs to the team rather than publicly exposing one player’s skill gap.

The available search did not establish current platform availability or accessibility options. Verify the product page for the intended system, and check whether the edition you are considering includes the two-player mode.

Minecraft: choose Creative for the gentlest introduction

Nintendo’s guide lists Minecraft as an option for introducing someone to games. The cited parental guide distinguishes Creative mode, which focuses on building, from Survival mode, which adds hunger and health mechanics. For a first session with a younger or inexperienced player, Creative is the more straightforward place to begin because the pair can concentrate on movement, placing blocks and deciding what to make.

Creative mode works especially well when the players have different skill levels. The experienced player can handle navigation or demonstrate a building technique while the new player sets the project’s direction. There is no requirement to turn the session into a race; a simple house, bridge or themed room is enough of a shared outcome.

Survival changes the tone. Hunger and health mechanics introduce resource management and consequences, which may be welcome for a child who wants more challenge but can distract from learning the controls. Switch only after both players understand the basic actions and want additional pressure.

For content context, the ESRB rates Minecraft E10+ for Fantasy Violence, and the cited parental guide lists PEGI 7. Ratings are territory-specific classifications, not guarantees about how an individual child will react. Multiplayer setup depends on the edition and platform, so confirm the exact version, player arrangement and any online requirement before purchase.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: familiar, short races without a campaign

Nintendo includes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in its guide to introducing someone less experienced to games. Racing has an immediately understandable loop: choose a vehicle, drive around a course and try to finish. Short rounds make it easy to stop after one race, change settings or let the new player try again without committing to a long story sequence.

This is primarily a racing and competitive game, not a co-op campaign. That distinction matters if your goal is to remove all performance pressure. You can still play side by side, explain the track and celebrate improvement, but the result normally compares the players rather than giving them one joint objective.

The available material does not verify specific assist settings for the exact edition. Do not promise automatic steering, acceleration help or another feature unless you have checked the current in-game options on the platform you will use.

Overcooked! 2: teamwork for players who enjoy urgency

A University of Sydney family factsheet describes Overcooked! 2 as cooperative cooking built around teamwork and communication. Both players divide tasks, pass information and react to a changing kitchen, making it a direct test of coordination rather than individual reflexes alone.

The same pressure can be the attraction or the deal-breaker. The factsheet suggests age 8+ and notes that younger children may need help. If the new player becomes anxious when a timer is running or when mistakes interrupt a sequence, begin with a different title. If both players enjoy energetic problem solving, the urgency gives the experienced player a natural role as a calm coordinator instead of simply racing ahead.

Platform and subscription details in that factsheet are older, so verify the current requirements for your system. Check whether the edition you plan to buy supports the intended local or online arrangement and whether any subscription is required.

It Takes Two: a dedicated co-op adventure for older players

EA describes It Takes Two as an adventure created purely for co-op. It is aimed at exactly two players, with the design built around cooperation rather than adding a second player as an afterthought. It supports local and online co-op, and EA’s Friend’s Pass lets a second person join a first-chapter trial. To play the full game, one user must own it.

That makes Friend’s Pass useful when two people want to test whether the format suits them before buying the complete experience. Treat it as a trial of the opening chapter, not as access to the entire campaign.

Age is the decisive caveat. The ESRB rates It Takes Two Teen for Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, Fantasy Violence and Language. It should therefore not be the automatic pick for a younger child, even though its cooperative design is unusually focused. For two older players who are comfortable with those descriptors, it is the shortlist’s clearest choice when the goal is a sustained, purpose-built co-op adventure.

How to choose between the five

Choose by age and content first

  1. Identify the player’s territory. Use the rating board that applies where you live; classifications and descriptors can differ by region.
  2. Read the descriptors. Minecraft’s E10+ Fantasy Violence and It Takes Two’s Teen descriptors communicate more than the rating label alone.
  3. Match the content to the specific child or adult. A rating is guidance, not a prediction of an individual’s comfort level.

Then decide whether competition is welcome

  • Shared objective: choose Untitled Goose Game for collaborative prank planning or Minecraft Creative for a jointly designed build.
  • Friendly competition: choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if comparing race results sounds motivating rather than discouraging.
  • Coordinated pressure: choose Overcooked! 2 when both players enjoy communicating quickly while a kitchen challenge moves on.
  • Two-player campaign: choose It Takes Two only when the Teen rating and full-game ownership arrangement fit.

Match the pace to the learner

For a calm first meeting, start with a mode that can be paused and explained without a timer. Creative Minecraft and Goose Game are the natural choices from this list. Mario Kart offers short, repeatable attempts but still compares performance. Overcooked! 2 and It Takes Two demand more sustained attention; the former adds time pressure, while the latter asks both players to stay engaged with a longer adventure.

Confirm the exact setup

Before paying, open the current store or product page for your platform and check the edition, player count, local or online mode, account requirements and any subscription needed for online play. This is especially important for Minecraft, whose multiplayer arrangement depends on the edition and platform, and for older listings whose platform information may have changed.

A first-session plan that prevents frustration

  1. Agree on the goal. Say whether you are building one small project, completing a prank, trying three races or learning one cooking routine. A modest target gives the new player a clear win condition.
  2. Let the beginner hold the controller first. Demonstrate only the minimum action needed to start. Avoid taking over whenever they hesitate; successful discovery builds confidence.
  3. Use one explanation at a time. In a movement-heavy game, teach movement before adding camera control or another simultaneous task. In a coordination game, assign one kitchen or building responsibility before expanding the workload.
  4. Pause for a reset. If the pace becomes stressful, stop and ask whether the player wants another attempt, a simpler task or a different game. A first session is about finding a comfortable activity, not proving skill.
  5. Swap roles. Let the experienced player follow instructions or handle the less central task. This keeps the session cooperative and prevents one person from becoming the permanent driver.
  6. Stop while it is still enjoyable. Ending after a successful small objective makes it easier to return later than pushing through fatigue or repeated failures.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Confirm the exact platform and edition.
  • Verify local versus online multiplayer and the number of supported players.
  • Check the current age rating and every listed content descriptor for your region.
  • For online play, verify account, network and subscription requirements from the current platform listing.
  • For It Takes Two, confirm which player owns the full game and understand that Friend’s Pass covers a first-chapter trial.
  • For Minecraft, choose Creative or Survival deliberately rather than assuming they provide the same experience.
  • For Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, check the edition’s actual options instead of assuming a particular driving assist.
  • For Overcooked! 2, confirm current platform and subscription information because the available family factsheet is older.
  • Do not treat an unverified store listing as proof that a mode, accessibility option or local setup is available.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which game is the safest first try for a non-gamer?

Untitled Goose Game is the clearest low-stakes starting point in this shortlist because its two-player mode gives both players one shared prank-planning objective. Minecraft Creative is another strong option when building sounds more appealing.

Is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe really co-op?

It is multiplayer, but it is primarily competitive racing rather than a cooperative campaign. Choose it when short races and friendly competition are welcome.

What Minecraft mode should a younger or new player use first?

Creative mode focuses on building and is the gentler introduction. Survival adds hunger and health mechanics, so use it later if both players want more challenge.

Can two people try It Takes Two without buying two copies?

EA’s Friend’s Pass supports local or online play for a first-chapter trial. The full game requires one user to own it; confirm the current platform arrangement before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Overcooked! 2 suitable for young children?

A University of Sydney family factsheet suggests age 8+ and says younger children may need help. Its time pressure can also make it a poor fit for players who find fast coordination stressful.
