The best cloud storage for a Mac depends on where you already work: choose iCloud Drive for Apple-device integration, Google Drive for collaboration in Google apps, OneDrive for a Microsoft 365 workflow, or Dropbox for cross-platform syncing and sharing. These are use-case recommendations, not results of hands-on testing. Whichever service you choose, treat it as a way to sync selected files—not as a complete backup of your Mac.

Which cloud storage fits your Mac workflow?

Start with the apps and devices you already use. Cloud storage is most useful when it makes your regular work easier, not simply when its advertised price per gigabyte looks low. Bundled productivity tools, shared storage and collaboration features can matter more than a direct capacity comparison.

Service A practical fit when you… What to weigh on a Mac
iCloud Drive Use Apple devices and want files available through macOS and Finder. It can sync Desktop and Documents, but iCloud storage is also used by other Apple data, and a separate sync service on those same folders can interfere.
Google Drive Collaborate in Gmail, Docs, Sheets or Slides. Choose it for that existing collaboration workflow; check current plan details and compatibility with your macOS version.
OneDrive Work mainly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or Microsoft 365. Its appeal can include Microsoft 365 storage bundles; check the terms of the plan you use.
Dropbox Need cross-platform syncing, external sharing or straightforward access across devices. It documents online-only files, selective sync, offline access and earlier-version recovery; these are provider-described features.

The Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and iCloud use cases reflect a June 2026 Mac-specific comparison, not a test of every service or macOS setup. A 2026 TechRadar review also associates Google Drive with Google Workspace and OneDrive with Microsoft 365, and notes that Mac experiences can differ from Windows. How iCloud Drive works with macOS

Sync files through Finder

Apple lets you enable iCloud Drive in System Settings and turn on “Sync this Mac.” You can also sync your Desktop and Documents folders; once enabled, those folders appear in Finder and in the Files app on iPhone and iPad. That makes iCloud Drive a natural choice when you want those files to follow you across Apple devices. Apple’s Mac guide to iCloud Drive explains the setup and folder options.

Understand Optimize Mac Storage

With Optimize Mac Storage, macOS can move older documents into iCloud when local space is needed. The feature can help manage the Mac’s disk space, but it does not mean every file is always stored locally. If you need a file without an internet connection, make sure it is available on the Mac before you go offline.

Do not sync the same folders with two services

Apple warns that a third-party service syncing the same Desktop and Documents folders may interfere with iCloud or stop it from updating. If you want to use another cloud service, choose a distinct folder for its files rather than pointing both services at those folders.

Keep large folders from taking up Mac disk space

Cloud services can offer ways to see or manage files without keeping every file downloaded to your Mac. The details depend on the service and its settings, so check how it handles files you need offline.

  • iCloud Drive: Optimize Mac Storage lets macOS store older documents in iCloud when local space is needed.
  • Dropbox: Dropbox describes online-only files that remain visible from the desktop and download when needed. It also documents selective sync on Mac, which can reduce what is synced to a computer. See Dropbox’s sync feature details.

For travel or unreliable internet access, confirm that the files you need are available offline before leaving. Online-only storage saves local space, but an online-only file may need to download before you can open it.

Cloud sync is not a complete Mac backup

Sync keeps selected files current across locations. It is not the same as a backup designed to help restore files or a system after loss or deletion. Apple states plainly: “iCloud doesn’t back up your entire Mac.” A synced folder can help you access files on another device, but it should not be your only recovery plan. Apple explains the distinction between iCloud and Mac backup.

Use Time Machine for a separate local backup

Apple documents Time Machine as the built-in option for automatically backing up a Mac. A common destination is an external USB or Thunderbolt drive. Apple recommends a backup disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity: its example pairs a 1 TB Mac with a 2 TB backup disk. Apple also advises using the Time Machine disk only for backups. Apple’s Time Machine guidance covers the disk requirement and setup.

WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive for Windows, USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 for PC & Mac, Plug and Play Ready - WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN
  • High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

Cloud sync and Time Machine solve different problems: use a cloud service for access and collaboration across devices, and maintain a separate backup for recovery. An external drive is a complementary local-backup purchase, not another form of cloud storage.

A quick decision checklist

  • Choose iCloud Drive if Finder and Apple-device continuity are your priority.
  • Choose Google Drive if your files and collaboration already center on Google apps.
  • Choose OneDrive if your work centers on Microsoft 365.
  • Consider Dropbox if cross-platform syncing, sharing or its documented online-only and selective-sync options suit your workflow.
  • Before paying for more storage, check what already consumes your account allowance and whether family sharing or a productivity bundle affects the value.
  • Keep a separate backup if you need a way to recover the Mac beyond synced files.
