For a large media library, the best cloud storage depends on more than headline capacity. Check the provider’s per-file ceiling, the quota you actually have left, whether that quota is shared with email or photos, and which upload route can finish a very large transfer without interruption.

Google Drive has the highest documented single-file ceiling in this comparison. Dropbox is a strong fit when its desktop application or API can be used instead of a browser. OneDrive is practical for Microsoft accounts, but work and school tenants have a much smaller cap. Proton Drive is the privacy-led option, with client-side encryption claims and a file-size rule tied to available account storage. None of these specifications proves faster uploads, higher uptime, or easier recovery; no independent speed or reliability winner was established.

What to compare before moving a large media library

A 200 GB video can fail even when a service advertises terabytes of storage. Capacity, file-size limits and the upload interface are separate constraints.

  • Single-file ceiling: the largest object the service documents for your account type.
  • Usable quota: space remaining after existing files and any products that share the same allowance.
  • Upload path: browser, desktop application, mobile application or API. Large transfers are more dependable when the provider recommends a desktop or API route.
  • Sharing and delivery: a permanent library link is different from a time-limited transfer package for one finished export.
  • Privacy model: determine what is encrypted before upload, what metadata remains visible and whether the claim is a vendor design description rather than an independent audit.
  • Regional price and account edition: plan names, billing periods, currencies and work/school restrictions can change the practical choice.
Service and use case Documented file limits Quota and sharing scope Large-upload route Privacy or delivery note
Google Drive for general files Up to 5 TB for “all other files” (Google support documentation, accessed 2026) Personal Google storage starts at up to 15 GB and is shared by Drive, Gmail and Photos Drive web interface and sync tools; confirm free quota before starting Google Photos backup has a separate video limit; do not treat it as the same as Drive storage
Dropbox 2 TB service maximum; dropbox.com page lists 350 GB per file or folder, while the desktop page lists up to 2 TB Uses the account’s available Dropbox space; Dropbox Transfer has separate, plan-dependent delivery limits Desktop application or API is recommended for very large uploads; browser transfers above 375 GB may time out or be interrupted Transfer can deliver a copy without first keeping it in the Dropbox account
OneDrive personal Up to 250 GB through current browsers and the OneDrive app Remaining OneDrive allowance; work or school accounts follow a different ceiling Microsoft recommends the desktop app for large files or batches Check whether the sign-in is personal or an organization-managed account before planning the move
OneDrive work or school 15 GB maximum per file according to Microsoft’s current support documentation Organization policy and assigned quota apply Use the desktop app, but it cannot bypass the account’s file ceiling Ask the administrator about retention, sharing and external-link rules
Proton Drive A file cannot exceed the free storage currently available in the account Free tier shown at 5 GB; a pricing page viewed in 2026 also showed a 200 GB paid tier, but plans and prices vary by country and billing context Use the supported web or desktop client and leave headroom for the upload Proton says file contents, file names and folder names are encrypted before leaving the device; file size itself is not encrypted
Google Photos backup Videos up to 10 GB per item Consumes the same personal Google storage pool as Drive and Gmail Photos backup workflow, not a general-purpose Drive upload Useful for photo-library organization, but not a substitute for storing larger source files in Drive

The figures above are provider-published specifications, not independent benchmarks. Verify the support page and your account’s plan immediately before a migration because limits and regional offerings can change.

Google Drive: the broadest documented ceiling for general files

Drive is the clearest fit when a single source file is larger than the limits of common consumer upload paths. Google’s support documentation allows up to 5 TB for the category it calls “all other files,” provided the account has enough unused storage. That last condition matters: personal Google storage is a shared pool, so Gmail attachments, Photos and Drive files compete for the same allowance.

When Drive is the better choice

  • You need to retain very large masters rather than only compressed viewing copies.
  • Your account has verified free space after subtracting existing mail and photo usage.
  • You want ordinary Drive folders and permission controls instead of a one-off delivery link.

Do not confuse Drive with Google Photos

Photos backup has a separate per-video restriction shown in the comparison table. A camera original that exceeds that restriction may still fit in Drive under its general-file rule, but it will not be accepted through the Photos backup workflow. Decide whether you need searchable photo-library features or an archive of source files before selecting the upload destination.

Safer Drive upload sequence

  1. Open Google One or the storage indicator in your Google account and note the remaining shared quota.
  2. Remove or move unrelated items only after confirming that they are not needed by Gmail or Photos.
  3. In Drive, choose New → File upload or Folder upload; for a multi-terabyte library, organize by project and year before starting.
  4. Keep the computer awake and the network stable while the transfer queue runs. If the browser is unreliable for your file, use Google’s supported desktop synchronization route and monitor the local status.
  5. Open several uploaded files from a second device or browser and compare their duration, size and checksum with the local originals before deleting the source.

Google’s published limit does not promise a particular upload duration, playback quality or restore experience. Treat Drive as storage, not as proof that a connection can transfer a file quickly.

Dropbox: use the desktop app or API for the largest uploads

Dropbox publishes two interface-specific descriptions that must be read together. Its general limit page sets a 2 TB maximum and warns that browser uploads above 375 GB can time out or be interrupted, recommending the desktop application or API for very large files. A separate upload page describes dropbox.com uploads at 350 GB per file or folder and desktop uploads up to 2 TB. The apparent mismatch is an interface distinction, not a guarantee that every browser can accept the service maximum.

Best fit for Dropbox

  • You can leave the desktop client running and allow it to resume a queue.
  • Your workflow already uses an API or automated ingest process.
  • You need a separate delivery product for a finished export rather than permanent library storage.

Desktop-first migration

  1. Install the current Dropbox desktop application and sign in to the intended account.
  2. Confirm available Dropbox space and the account’s plan before copying a large project folder.
  3. Place one test file in the synchronized Dropbox folder and wait until the client reports completion.
  4. Add the remaining folders in batches, watching for local disk pressure and sync conflicts.
  5. Verify the files online and from another device before archiving the originals.

Do not start a near-limit transfer in a browser merely because the service accepts smaller uploads there. A timeout can leave an incomplete queue and force you to identify which files need to be restarted.

Storage versus Dropbox Transfer

Dropbox Transfer is a delivery mechanism with its own plan-dependent size, expiry and password rules. Dropbox says it can deliver a video without first storing that video in your account. That makes Transfer useful for sending a final render to a client, but it is not a replacement for an ongoing, searchable media archive. Check the Transfer limit and expiry settings for your plan separately from the storage limit.

OneDrive: straightforward for personal accounts, restrictive for organization accounts

Microsoft documents a substantially larger file ceiling for personal OneDrive than for work or school accounts. The account type is therefore the first decision, not an afterthought. A personal sign-in can use the limit shown in the table through current browsers or the OneDrive app; an organization-managed sign-in is capped at the smaller work/school value even when the tenant has ample total storage.

Personal OneDrive workflow

  1. Open the OneDrive storage page and confirm that the account is marked personal rather than work or school.
  2. Check the remaining allowance and identify whether existing PC backups or shared folders are consuming it.
  3. For a very large file or a large batch, install the OneDrive desktop application and copy into the synchronized folder.
  4. Wait for each item’s completed status, then inspect the web view to ensure that the cloud copy is present.
  5. Use OneDrive’s sharing controls only after the archive is complete; apply the least access a recipient needs.

Work and school warning

Organization accounts can impose additional retention, external-sharing and administrator policies. The lower per-file ceiling cannot be worked around by splitting a file in the web interface if the recipient needs the original as one object. Ask the administrator whether a sanctioned file-transfer system exists, and keep the source archive locally until the organization confirms successful receipt.

Proton Drive: privacy-focused design with quota-bound file size

Proton promotes sharing files of any size, but its support documentation gives the operational rule: the file must fit within the storage that is free in your account. A large account upgrade therefore changes the practical maximum, while a nearly full account can reject a much smaller file.

What Proton’s encryption statement covers

Proton says file content, file names and folder names are encrypted with the user’s key before leaving the device. The same support documentation says file size is not encrypted, so the service can still expose that metadata. This is a vendor description of its design, not an independent comparative security audit. If your threat model includes traffic or metadata analysis, account for that limitation rather than describing the service as invisible.

Proton upload checklist

  1. Check the storage meter and leave room for the complete file plus any existing folders.
  2. Confirm that the client is signed in to the intended Proton account and that local encryption is active.
  3. Upload one representative master first, then download it to a separate device and compare the result.
  4. Share a link only after reviewing the recipient and permission settings presented by your current plan.
  5. Keep a local copy until the remote copy has been opened and verified.

The free tier shown on Proton’s 2026 pricing page was 5 GB, and the same page displayed a 200 GB paid tier. Those values and prices are volatile and may differ by country, currency, promotion or monthly versus annual billing; compare Proton’s current page with the same billing basis used for any alternative.

Which service fits your specific job?

Your priority Most suitable starting point Why Check before committing
One exceptionally large master file Google Drive Its documented general-file ceiling is the largest in this group Shared Google quota and the exact account plan
Very large batches with a resumable desktop workflow Dropbox or OneDrive personal Both providers recommend desktop applications for large transfers Dropbox interface limits; OneDrive account type and remaining space
Privacy-first storage for personal media Proton Drive Client-side encryption is described for content and names Available quota, unencrypted file-size metadata and current plan terms
Sending one completed video to another person Dropbox Transfer or another plan-supported delivery feature A transfer package can be separate from permanent account storage Transfer size, expiry, password and download rules for your plan
Photo-library backup and search Google Photos, when each video fits its item limit Purpose-built backup and organization The per-item video ceiling and shared Google storage consumption

There is no universal winner because these are different jobs. A service that accepts a huge source file may be less convenient for a client handoff, while a privacy-oriented design may expose metadata that matters to your threat model.

A reliable migration method for any provider

1. Inventory before buying capacity

Export a list of files, sizes, durations and locations. Separate irreplaceable camera originals from proxies, cache folders and duplicate exports. Add the total size of the files you will actually upload, then leave headroom for growth and temporary versions.

2. Match each file to the account and route

Use the table’s limit for the exact account edition. A file that fits a personal account may fail on a work tenant, and a service maximum may be reachable only through the desktop client or API. Never infer the browser limit from the desktop limit.

3. Test the complete path

Upload one representative large file, wait for the provider’s completed status, download it on a different network or device, and compare the local and cloud copies. This exposes account, firewall, naming and client problems before the full queue is committed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Preserve a second copy

Do not erase the local masters as soon as an upload indicator turns green. Keep the originals until independent verification is complete and your account’s billing, sharing and recovery arrangements are settled.

5. Share deliberately

Create a separate delivery link or folder for collaborators instead of exposing the whole archive. Review whether recipients can edit, reshare or download, and whether a link expires. Organization accounts may apply policies you cannot change.

Troubleshooting large-file failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
Upload is rejected immediately The file exceeds the account or interface ceiling Confirm the account type, then switch to the provider’s supported desktop/API route or choose a service whose documented limit fits
Browser upload stalls near completion Session timeout, browser interruption or the provider’s large-browser warning Use the desktop application or API; keep the source untouched and restart from the supported client
Service reports insufficient space Quota is shared with other products or the file needs more free room than expected Review the storage breakdown, remove only verified duplicates, or increase capacity before retrying
Personal plan works but company account fails Work or school policy has a lower file ceiling Confirm the sign-in identity and ask the administrator about an approved transfer route
Recipient cannot open the link Expired link, password requirement, permission restriction or organization policy Check the link’s current settings and issue a new, narrowly scoped share
Downloaded copy differs from the master Interrupted transfer or local file-selection error Compare size and checksum, delete the incomplete remote copy and re-upload through the supported client

Cloud storage is not a complete backup by itself

A synchronized folder can propagate accidental deletions, and a transfer link can expire. For irreplaceable music and video, maintain at least one independent local copy in addition to the cloud account. A portable external SSD is a practical second-copy category for a media library; select capacity based on your inventory, budget and portability, and verify the copy before storing the drive separately. The cloud providers above do not automatically supply a complete backup strategy.

How to evaluate price without a misleading comparison

The available evidence does not establish a same-country, same-billing-period price table for these services. Google’s 5 TB Google One result was regional, and Proton’s displayed capacities and prices can vary with page context. Dropbox and OneDrive pricing also depends on plan and account edition. Before purchasing, record the currency, monthly or annual term, tax treatment, storage amount, file limit and whether the quota is shared with other products. A lower advertised price is not a saving if the plan cannot accept your largest file or leaves too little headroom.
