Google Drive and Dropbox are the clearest app alternatives if your iPhone can run iOS 17 or later. Microsoft’s current requirements list iOS 18 or later for new OneDrive app installations. If your iPhone runs an earlier iOS version, check the provider’s current App Store listing and any existing installation before switching; older iPhones do not all support the same iOS version.
Which cloud storage apps support your iPhone’s iOS version?
Check your installed version at Settings → General → About → iOS Version. Then compare it with the app’s current listing on your device. The requirements below are point-in-time claims based on provider pages accessed October 9, 2026; providers can change them.

Apple’s instructions for connecting compatible providers are in Use third-party cloud apps in the Files app. Requirements may vary by region or listing, so use the App Store on the iPhone you plan to use.
If your iPhone runs iOS 17
The current Google Drive and Dropbox requirements are met. Microsoft’s stated minimum for a new OneDrive installation is not. If OneDrive is already installed, Microsoft’s guidance allows that updating may be possible, but it does not promise that the app will continue to work reliably.

If your iPhone runs iOS 18 or later
The stated minimums for OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox are met. Switching is a choice about accounts, sharing or workflow—not something required simply because the iPhone is older.
If your iPhone runs an iOS version below 17
The current researched Google Drive and Dropbox app requirements are not met. Check the provider’s current web access options and whether an older app already on the phone still works. Browser feature support on unsupported older iOS versions has not been established here, so do not assume it matches the full app or that an app download will remain available.

Which alternative fits the way you use cloud storage?
Google Drive for cross-platform files and sharing
Google Drive is a practical choice if you want to access and share files across devices and your iPhone meets the iOS 17 minimum. Google’s current support page lists 15 GB of Google Account storage, shared across Drive, Gmail and Google Photos—not 15 GB reserved for files in Drive. See Google One Help’s storage information. A large Gmail or Photos library can therefore leave less room for Drive files.

Dropbox is another option for an iPhone that meets its iOS 17 requirement. Its app needs at least 150 MB of free device space to install, according to Dropbox’s system requirements. You can expose Dropbox in Apple Files once the app is installed and configured, but Files integration does not mean every Dropbox feature is available within Files.

Keep iCloud for Apple syncing; add another service for selected files
iCloud Drive is integrated with Apple devices, and Apple’s Files guidance shows it alongside enabled third-party cloud locations. You can keep iCloud for Apple syncing or device backup while placing selected documents in another provider. The right choice depends on what you want stored: files, photos, synced app data or a complete device backup.
Consider Box only after checking device compatibility
Apple lists Box among cloud services that can be enabled in Files. The cited guidance does not establish Box’s current minimum iOS version or consumer plan details, so check Box’s current listing and account terms before choosing it for an older phone.

Cloud storage does not add capacity to the iPhone
Cloud quota and the iPhone’s physical storage are separate. More space in a cloud account does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity, as Dropbox’s explanation of iPhone and cloud storage also describes. If the phone itself is full, moving files to the cloud may help only if you manage what remains downloaded on the device; changing providers or buying cloud quota does not enlarge its internal storage.

A file-storage service is also not automatically a full iPhone backup replacement. A provider may hold documents or photos without backing up your settings, app data and other device contents. Decide which data you need protected, and keep an appropriate device-backup method if that is your goal.

Choose in this order
- Confirm the iOS version. Open Settings → General → About, then compare the version with the provider’s current app listing.
- Identify what you need to store. Separate files, camera-roll photos, synced app data and complete device backups; do not assume one cloud app covers all four.
- Check how you need to work. If you want to browse a provider in Files, install and set it up, then enable it in Files. For sharing or offline access, confirm that the provider offers the feature you need.
- Check usable quota. Account storage may be shared across services, as it is with Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. Consider what is already using the allowance.
- Compare current regional pricing last. Prices and availability vary, and a current like-for-like comparison is not established here. Verify the terms for your country before paying.
Moving files from OneDrive is optional
You do not need to migrate files before evaluating another service. If you choose to import content into OneDrive, Microsoft documents importing individual photos and files from Google Drive, Dropbox or Google Photos. The process copies files rather than deleting or moving the originals, and the imported items use OneDrive storage. See Microsoft’s import instructions.
