Short answer: Google Photos remains the easiest Pixel backup because its controls, device-folder selection, status indicators, search, sharing and cross-device access are integrated with Android. If you want an alternative, choose Amazon Photos for a Prime household with a large photo library, Proton Drive for end-to-end privacy, OneDrive when Microsoft 365 already supplies 1 TB, Dropbox for a general file workspace, or pCloud for a one-time migration and secondary copy. Check actual backup status on the phone: seeing an image in the Pixel gallery does not prove that it has reached the cloud.
Which service is best for your Pixel?
There is no single winner for every Pixel owner. The right choice depends on whether your library is mostly photos or also large 4K videos, whether you already pay for another ecosystem, and how much you value private encryption over photo-specific features.

For most Pixel owners, start by deciding whether video capacity or privacy is the constraint. Prime can solve photo capacity while leaving a separate video problem. Proton solves the encryption question but gives you only 5 GB free. Microsoft 365 can make a separate photo subscription unnecessary if you already have the Personal plan. Dropbox is convenient when the same folders must be shared with computers and collaborators. pCloud is better viewed as a migration tool than as a replacement for an always-on Pixel photo service.

A gallery view is not a backup receipt
Google’s Android guidance distinguishes local items from backed-up items. The Photos app can show pictures that are still only on the phone. A damaged, lost or reset Pixel can therefore erase images that looked perfectly normal in the gallery. Open the item or backup-status indicator and confirm that the upload completed before deleting local originals or changing phones.

Original quality uses more space
Original-quality backup preserves full-resolution files, including RAW photographs and 4K video, but it consumes the provider’s quota. Compression or storage-saving modes may extend a free allowance, yet they are a different archival choice. Decide whether you need the camera’s original file before enabling automatic cleanup on the device.
Cloud sync is not the same as an archive
A second cloud copy can protect against a failed phone, but it is still exposed to account loss, accidental deletion and provider policy changes. Keep at least one independent copy of irreplaceable originals—on a computer, external drive or another cloud account—and periodically open files from that copy to confirm they are readable.
Google Photos: the Pixel benchmark
Why it is the easiest choice
Google Photos is built into the Pixel experience. It offers automatic backup, per-device-folder controls, mobile-data limits, backup-status checks, search, albums, sharing and access from other devices without assembling a separate workflow. That integration is why it remains the lowest-friction option even when another service is cheaper for a particular bundle.
Storage and quality
Google provides 15 GB at no cost, shared across Photos, Gmail and Drive. Mail attachments and Drive files can therefore reduce the space available for photos without any change in Photos settings. Google One lists 100 GB for $1.99 per month and 2 TB for $9.99 per month. Original quality supports full-resolution RAW photographs and 4K video, but every byte counts against that shared allowance.

Set up and verify backup
- Open Google Photos on the Pixel and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Photos settings, then Backup.
- Review the backup account, quality setting and mobile-data limits.
- Open Back up device folders and enable the camera and any folders that contain images you want protected, such as screenshots or an editing app’s export folder.
- Leave the phone on power and Wi-Fi until the status reports completion. Google warns that battery optimization can interfere with background backup, so recheck the status after changing battery settings or after a major Android update.
Do not enable a “free up space” or delete-local-files command until you have opened several recently uploaded originals from another device or the web interface. That test catches an incorrectly selected folder and an account that has silently run out of quota.
Amazon Photos: high-capacity photo storage for Prime members
What the Prime allowance includes
Amazon says every customer receives 5 GB. In supported countries, Prime members receive unlimited full-resolution photo storage and 5 GB for videos and other files. The distinction matters to Pixel owners who record frequently in 4K: a photo library can fit the unlimited benefit while the video library reaches the 5 GB ceiling quickly.
Android setup and limits
Install the Amazon Photos Android app, enable Auto-Save and select the camera-roll folders you want uploaded. Before relying on it for videos, check the account’s remaining video allowance. If the 5 GB video limit is reached, new clips need a separate storage plan or a different backup destination; they are not covered by the unlimited-photo benefit.
When it beats Google Photos
Amazon Photos is compelling when a household already has Prime and primarily needs full-resolution photo capacity. It is less suitable as the only Pixel backup for a family that records long 4K clips, because those clips share the small video allowance. Confirm country availability and the exact account entitlement before moving a library.

Proton Drive: the privacy-led alternative
Encryption model
Proton Drive uses end-to-end encryption for its mobile backup and zero-access encryption for stored files, so Proton cannot decrypt the content. That is the clearest differentiator for readers who do not want the storage provider able to inspect their photo library. End-to-end encryption also means account-recovery choices deserve attention: protect the account credentials and recovery methods because the provider cannot simply decrypt files for you.
Storage and photo backup behavior
The free tier includes 5 GB. Paid plans reach up to 3 TB, which is the practical route for a large original-quality Pixel library or extensive 4K video collection. Proton’s Android backup starts in the Photos tab, defaults to the Camera folder and allows additional folders to be added.
Set it up on Android
- Open Proton Drive and go to Photos.
- Tap Turn on backup and grant photo access when Android asks.
- For screenshots, edited exports or other locations, open Settings > Photo backup and add the required folders.
- Use Wi-Fi for a large first upload. Wait for the completion status before removing local files or assuming the library is protected.
Proton Drive is the strongest choice when the encryption model is more important than advanced photo search or a generous free allowance. Its documentation does not promise the same photo-discovery feature set as Google Photos, so test how you will find and share older images before migrating your only copy.

Storage included with Microsoft plans
Microsoft lists 5 GB free storage, a 100 GB Basic plan for $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year, and 1 TB with Microsoft 365 Personal for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. If you already pay for Microsoft 365 Personal, the included 1 TB can be less expensive and simpler than adding a separate photo subscription.

Android backup and security tools
OneDrive supports photo backup from Android phones as well as computer-folder backup. Its broader file-storage design is useful when your Pixel photos must sit beside documents, project folders and shared work files. Microsoft also documents Personal Vault and ransomware-recovery features, which add account and recovery controls beyond a basic camera-roll upload.
Trade-offs for a Pixel library
OneDrive is a strong value and a sensible cross-device workspace, but it is not as photo-specialized as Google Photos. Before switching, check that the app is uploading every required device folder and that your preferred way of browsing albums, searching faces or sharing selections works for your family. Keep Google Photos enabled during the transition until OneDrive’s upload has been verified.
Dropbox: a broad file-sync workspace
Capacity and recovery
Dropbox Plus provides 2 TB for $9.99 per month. The service supports Android and web access, photo and video storage, and 30 days to restore deleted files. Those recovery controls are useful when a file is accidentally removed or overwritten.
Who should choose it
Dropbox fits readers who want one predictable folder structure for camera files, work documents and shared projects. It is less attractive when the main requirement is photo-first discovery, automatic album organization or a large free allowance. Treat the 30-day restore window as a recovery feature, not as a permanent archive: files deleted longer ago require an independent copy.

pCloud: migration and secondary storage
Importing an existing library
pCloud documents one-time imports from Google Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive. A Google Photos import is limited to 2,000 photos per backup. Ongoing Google Photos backups are unavailable because of API changes, so pCloud cannot serve as a continuously mirrored replacement for that source.
Use it deliberately
pCloud is useful when you are moving away from another provider, consolidating older folders or creating a second cloud copy. Break a large Google Photos library into batches that respect the 2,000-photo limit, compare counts after each batch and retain the original source until random files have been downloaded and opened. Cost and ecosystem decisions
Compare the cost of the storage you actually need, not just the headline allowance. A Pixel owner with thousands of RAW photos and frequent 4K video can outgrow a free tier quickly. Shared quotas also include non-photo data, so check Gmail, Drive or other files before assuming that all available gigabytes belong to Photos.

How to verify that a Pixel library is really backed up
- Photograph a new subject and wait for the provider’s upload indicator to show completion.
- On a second device or a private browser session, sign in to the same account and open the new file.
- Check an original RAW file and a long video, not just a small JPEG. Confirm that the downloaded file has the expected resolution and duration.
- Inspect every required device folder. Camera uploads do not automatically include screenshots, messaging-app media or editing exports unless those folders are enabled.
- Review the provider’s remaining quota. A full account can leave older items visible while preventing new uploads.
- Only after these checks should you use a storage-saving or delete-local-files function.
Common failure causes
- Battery optimization: Android may pause background uploads. Google specifically warns that battery optimization can interfere with backup; recheck the status after changing power settings.
- Mobile-data limits: Large videos may wait indefinitely if cellular backup is disabled. Use Wi-Fi or deliberately allow mobile data when the file is urgent.
- Permission changes: Android photo access can be revoked after an update or when an app has not been used for a long time. Reopen the app’s permissions and confirm access to the intended folders.

If you change providers, run both systems during the transition, compare item counts and dates, and retain the old account until new uploads and random full-resolution downloads have succeeded. This approach protects against a lost phone without treating any single cloud account as an infallible archive.
