Short answer: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Gemini are practical hosted alternatives to Claude, but none is ban-proof. Their policies allow access limits, suspension, or termination for prohibited use, terms violations, security concerns, or account problems. If your main goal is to avoid one provider controlling access to your AI work, local software such as LM Studio or Ollama is a different option: the model runs on your computer, but you take on hardware, setup, model-quality, privacy, and safety responsibilities.
This comparison reflects official consumer-facing documents reviewed on October 13, 2026. Rules, appeals, features, and availability can differ by country, plan, product, and account type, so check the current policy before moving important work.
What to expect from a Claude alternative
Changing providers can reduce dependence on Anthropic, but it does not eliminate account enforcement. Every hosted assistant operates through an account, service terms, abuse controls, and regional eligibility rules. A replacement can therefore fail for the same broad reason as Claude: a provider decides that activity, account behavior, payment details, identity information, or security signals violate its rules.

- Another hosted assistant: easiest setup and access to a provider-operated service, with that provider retaining the power to limit or revoke access.
- Local inference: less dependence on a hosted account for supported tasks, but more responsibility for installation, storage, updates, model selection, device capacity, and safe use.
- A mixed workflow: keep more than one hosted account, maintain local copies of important work, and use local software for tasks that do not require a particular cloud model.
No source reviewed for this article establishes a comparative ban rate, suspension percentage, uptime ranking, price comparison, or answer-quality ranking. It would be misleading to call one provider “least likely to ban you.”
At-a-glance comparison
| Option | Account dependence | Restriction or appeal information | Privacy and data controls documented here | Best fit when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI account and service access | OpenAI documents deactivation causes and an appeal route | Not established by the documents used for this comparison | You want a familiar hosted general-purpose assistant and a published process for challenging deactivation | OpenAI can deactivate accounts for policy, terms, security, warning-history, or verification issues |
| Microsoft Copilot (consumer) | Microsoft account | Consumer supplemental terms permit limiting, suspension, or permanent revocation | Not established by the documents used for this comparison | You already use Microsoft services and accept Microsoft-account dependence | Consumer terms reviewed are effective August 18, 2026; they do not apply to work, school, or organizational Entra sign-ins |
| Gemini | Google account or another account context determined by the product | Google publishes prohibited-use rules; the documents reviewed do not establish a single universal appeal workflow | Activity review, deletion, auto-delete, and AI-improvement controls are described for Gemini Apps | You want Google’s hosted assistant and can work within its data settings | Rules and data handling vary by product and account; Google warns that outputs can be inaccurate or offensive |
| LM Studio | No Claude-hosted session; local application and downloaded model | Local software does not provide a hosted-provider appeal process for your model session | Models and configurations differ; vendor product claims are not an independent audit | You want to run supported models on your own computer | Capability, speed, storage, compatibility, and hardware requirements vary; no minimum specification is established here |
| Ollama | Local access to open models, with an option described as cloud access | No single hosted-assistant appeal process for local execution | Ollama says prompts are never stored or trained on; this is a vendor statement and does not automatically cover every model, extension, or network path | You are comfortable using a command-line-oriented local model workflow | Local model performance and resource needs are model-specific and were not benchmarked here |
ChatGPT: a hosted alternative with a documented appeal route
ChatGPT is a plausible replacement if you want another hosted assistant rather than a self-managed setup. It is not an escape from enforcement. OpenAI’s account-deactivation guidance says, “Account deactivations occur when there are violations of our Usage Policies or Terms of Service.”
Why OpenAI may deactivate an account
The help page reviewed October 13, 2026, and shown as updated 21 days earlier, lists several possible causes:
- Prohibited-use violations.
- Terms breaches, including circumventing access restrictions, inappropriate sharing of credentials or API keys, or disrupting service integrity.
- Security concerns, such as activity suggesting an account has been compromised.
- Repeated violations after warnings.
- Failure to complete a required age or identity check.
These are documented examples, not an exhaustive diagnostic list. A notice alone does not establish which rule was applied in an individual case. Do not create a second account to bypass a restriction or share credentials while trying to regain access; those actions can create additional terms and security issues.

How an OpenAI appeal works
- Read the deactivation notice and preserve its wording, date, and any case reference.
- Use the appeal link in the notice. If you cannot access that email, use OpenAI’s stated intake route.
- Explain the relevant usage, identify any suspected account compromise, and include facts that distinguish legitimate work from the flagged activity.
- Wait for the provider’s response rather than repeatedly submitting contradictory forms.
The appeal documentation asks for context relevant to the case. Keep your explanation factual: describe what you were doing, when the event occurred, whether another person or integration had access, and what you changed to prevent a recurrence.
When ChatGPT is the sensible choice
Choose it when convenience, a hosted workflow, and a published deactivation-and-appeal process matter more than removing provider control. Do not choose it on the assumption that it has a lower suspension risk than Claude; no comparative enforcement data supports that conclusion.
Microsoft Copilot: check which account you use
Microsoft Copilot’s consumer supplemental terms reviewed for this article take effect August 18, 2026. They state, “To use Copilot you must have a Microsoft Account, and you need to be old enough at least 13, but sometimes older, depending on your country’s laws.” The terms permit Microsoft to limit, suspend, or permanently revoke access in specified circumstances.
What the consumer terms cover
The listed circumstances include suspected fraud or illegal activity, breaches of the applicable terms, and suspension or closure of the Microsoft account itself. In practical terms, Copilot access can depend on the health and eligibility of the wider Microsoft account, not only on an individual conversation.

Consumer versus organizational Copilot
The same supplemental terms expressly say they do not apply to people signed in with a work, school, or organizational Entra account. If your Copilot session uses an employer or school identity, consult the organization’s applicable terms, administrator, retention rules, and security controls. Do not apply the consumer policy to an organizational account without checking that distinction.
When Copilot is the sensible choice
Copilot can be convenient if you already maintain a Microsoft account and want a hosted alternative without setting up local models. It is a poor fit if your requirement is “no provider can revoke access,” because the consumer terms explicitly reserve that power. Keep independent copies of prompts, outputs, and project files instead of treating Copilot history as your only archive.
Gemini: policy restrictions plus product-specific data controls
Google’s Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy applies to interactions with Google products and services that refer to it. The page reviewed lists illegal or harmful uses, attempts to compromise Google or another party’s services, and efforts to circumvent abuse protections or safety filters. It was last modified December 17, 2024, so verify that a newer version has not replaced it before relying on a specific rule.

Those controls do not mean that conversations are invisible to people. The hub says some data is reviewed by human reviewers and warns: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” Even with Keep Activity turned off, Google says it uses chats to respond and protect users and services, including with help from human reviewers.
Account and product differences
The privacy hub concerns the Gemini Apps it enumerates. Work and school accounts may have different data-handling terms, administrators, retention settings, or product availability. Check the account context before sending company, client, health, legal, financial, or other confidential material.
Output quality and safety
Google cautions that Gemini can produce inaccurate or offensive information. Treat generated text as a draft, verify consequential claims, and keep human review for decisions involving safety, compliance, finances, employment, or personal data. The policy documents do not establish that Gemini is more or less permissive than Claude in practice.

Local inference addresses a narrower problem: one hosted provider controls access to your AI session. LM Studio describes downloading local language models within its application and using them for chats or agentic tasks. Ollama describes access to open models locally or in the cloud and says prompts are never stored or trained on.

What local use changes
- Your supported model can run without an active Claude, OpenAI, Microsoft, or Google chat session.
- Prompts and outputs can remain on your device when your configuration does not send them to a remote service.
- You control model files, updates, integrations, and deletion rather than relying entirely on a hosted account.
- A local setup can continue during a hosted-account outage or restriction, provided the computer and software are available.
What local use does not guarantee
- It does not make every model as capable, current, fast, or reliable as Claude.
- It does not remove all rules. Software licenses, model licenses, safety restrictions, copyright obligations, and workplace policies still apply.
- It does not eliminate technical failure. A full disk, incompatible model, driver problem, insufficient memory, or broken extension can stop the workflow.
- It does not make every connection private. A model, plugin, update checker, web-search tool, or cloud mode may transmit data.
No minimum RAM, VRAM, processor, operating-system version, or specific computer model was established for this comparison. Check the requirements of the exact model and application you intend to use before buying hardware. Treat LM Studio and Ollama privacy statements as vendor descriptions, not independent audits covering every configuration.
Who should choose local inference
Local software is most appropriate when you can tolerate setup work, have a computer capable of the selected model, and value independence from a hosted account more than maximum convenience. It is less suitable when you need guaranteed access to a particular proprietary model, shared team administration, synchronized history, or a provider’s managed safety and update pipeline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose without chasing a “ban-proof” provider
- Define the dependency you are removing. If the concern is only a Claude suspension, another hosted service may be enough. If the concern is any provider-controlled account, include local inference in the decision.
- Classify your work. Separate confidential material, routine drafting, coding, research, and high-consequence decisions. The same service need not handle all categories.
- Check the account context. Consumer, paid, work, school, and organizational accounts can have different terms, administrators, retention, and regional availability.
- Read the current restriction and privacy pages. Policies change. Record the effective or last-modified date and verify it again before moving a critical workflow.
- Test a reversible workload. Use non-confidential prompts, export the results, and confirm that the model and interface meet your needs before migrating essential projects.
- Build an exit path. Keep source documents, prompt templates, outputs, and settings in files you control. Do not make a provider’s chat history your only copy.
Migration checklist if Claude access is at risk
- Preserve evidence and work lawfully. Save notices, dates, project files, prompt templates, and outputs that you are entitled to retain. Do not attempt to defeat an access control.
- Use Claude’s official appeal path. Anthropic says a user who believes a suspension or termination was wrong should go to claude.ai, log in with the banned account, and complete the appeal form. The Safeguards team can investigate. Appeal access requires that login.
- Export available data. Anthropic says Free, Pro, or Max users banned for a Usage Policy violation may still log in to export data or delete the account. Export access is available to banned users, but the accessible data can be restricted according to the associated violation.
- Do not confuse retention with appeal time. Anthropic’s March 16, 2026 policy-update summary says the default data-retention period changed to 30 days. That is a dated retention statement, not a promise about how long an appeal remains open or how long account access lasts.
- Create a provider-neutral workspace. Store source text, structured notes, code, and reusable prompts outside the chat application. Redact secrets before testing another service.
- Choose a fallback for each task. Assign routine hosted work to a second provider and identify which tasks, if any, can run locally. Keep the plan documented so a restriction does not become an emergency.
Appeal writing that is useful
State the account identifier, date of the notice, relevant workspace or integration, and the exact activity you believe was misunderstood. If credentials may have been exposed, say when you changed them and revoked sessions or keys. Avoid threats, speculation about an automated system, or claims that you cannot support. An appeal is a request for review, not a guarantee of reinstatement.
Privacy practices that apply to every option
- Do not paste passwords, API keys, private encryption keys, regulated records, or confidential client material into a service until you understand its data handling.
- Use separate workspaces or accounts where your employer’s policy requires them, and follow administrator instructions for organizational accounts.
- Turn on available deletion or auto-delete controls only after checking what they cover; a setting may affect history without erasing backups, safety logs, or data already reviewed.
- Keep an offline or independently managed copy of irreplaceable work.
- Review extensions, browser connectors, agent tools, and cloud modes. A “local” interface can still send data through an optional integration.
- Verify generated code, legal language, medical information, financial calculations, and security advice before acting on them.
What the available evidence can and cannot tell you
Official policy pages are useful for knowing what a provider reserves the right to do and how it describes an appeal. They do not reveal how often each provider suspends accounts, how consistently reviewers apply a rule, or whether one service is safer for a particular type of prompt. User anecdotes can illustrate experiences but cannot establish an enforcement rate or prove the cause of an individual restriction.
Availability also varies. Country, age, plan, identity checks, payment status, organizational administration, and product edition can change the terms that apply. Recheck the linked provider documents immediately before publication or a major migration, especially where a page has an older modification date.
Bottom line for a restriction-conscious workflow
Use ChatGPT, consumer Copilot, or Gemini when you want the convenience of a hosted assistant and accept that the provider can enforce its policies. Treat their appeal and privacy documentation as practical operating information, not as promises of uninterrupted access. Use LM Studio or Ollama when reducing hosted-account dependence is more important than turnkey convenience and you are prepared to manage local hardware and software. The most resilient approach is usually a documented, mixed workflow: provider-neutral files, a second hosted option for ordinary work, and a tested local path for tasks that can run on your computer.
