Choose a Windows 11 laptop if you need native Windows programs. The Dell XPS 13 is the closest all-purpose replacement for a Chromebook’s light, touchscreen-oriented format, while the HP OmniBook X Flip 14 adds tablet, tent and stand modes. Frequent travelers should consider the ASUS Zenbook A14, provided their applications and peripherals work on Windows on Arm. Microsoft Surface Laptop is the premium Windows alternative.
If your required software is macOS-only, buy a MacBook instead: the MacBook Neo is the lower-cost entry point and the MacBook Air M5 provides substantially more memory, storage, ports and external-display capability. Android phones work with either platform for web, cloud and messaging, but the richest cross-device features are platform-specific. Galaxy-phone owners get the clearest first-party integration from Samsung Galaxy Book. ChromeOS Flex is useful for reusing an old computer, but it does not run native Windows or macOS applications.
Quick recommendations
| Your priority | Best fit | Why it fits | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows desktop software and broad peripheral support | Dell XPS 13 | Windows 11 in a light 13.4-inch touchscreen configuration | The base 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD configuration can constrain heavy multitasking |
| Galaxy phone integration | Samsung Galaxy Book | Samsung documents file sharing, remote phone-storage access and keyboard/trackpad control across Galaxy devices | Supported Galaxy devices, software versions and regions vary |
| Chromebook-like convertible modes | HP OmniBook X Flip 14 | Windows 11 2-in-1 with laptop, tablet, stand and tent positions | A 14-inch convertible is less convenient to hold as a tablet than a small Chromebook |
| Lowest travel weight | ASUS Zenbook A14 | The cited lineup starts below 2.18 pounds and includes OLED and Snapdragon configurations | Confirm Windows-on-Arm support for specialist apps, drivers, printers and accessories |
| Premium Windows hardware | Microsoft Surface Laptop | Three size options and long manufacturer-rated battery claims | Prices rise quickly with screen size and configuration |
| Lowest-cost macOS entry | MacBook Neo | macOS from $699 in the cited 2026 comparison | No touchscreen; base configuration starts at 8GB memory |
| More macOS headroom | MacBook Air M5 | 16GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, Thunderbolt 4 and support for up to two external displays | Higher starting price and no touchscreen |
| Reuse an existing computer | ChromeOS Flex | Can install on compatible Windows, Mac or Linux hardware | Check Google’s certified-model list; Flex is not the same as ChromeOS and cannot run Windows or macOS apps |
Start with the software, not the laptop
A Chromebook replacement is only successful if it runs the programs that made you leave ChromeOS. Write down every required application, then classify it before comparing screens, processors or battery claims.

Choose Windows 11 when your work depends on Windows-only engineering, accounting, creative, testing or enterprise software. Windows also tends to offer the broadest selection of printer, scanner, dock, specialty-controller and other peripheral drivers. A familiar Windows desktop can preserve local-file workflows that browser versions cannot.

When macOS is the right destination
Choose a MacBook when a required application is macOS-only or when your organization standardizes on Mac software. Confirm the exact macOS version and hardware support for professional plug-ins, security tools and accessories; “available for Mac” does not guarantee that every extension or driver works on Apple silicon.
When a browser-first machine is still enough
If every important task is web-based and the problem is simply an aging computer, ChromeOS Flex may extend its life. It supplies many ChromeOS features on certified Windows, Mac or Linux models, but it is a different product from ChromeOS and does not create a Windows or macOS application layer.
Best Windows alternatives for people leaving ChromeOS
Dell XPS 13: the closest general replacement
The Dell XPS 13 is the most direct answer to “What laptop is better than a Chromebook if I need Windows programs?” in this comparison. The cited configuration pairs Windows 11 with a light 13.4-inch touchscreen format, so it preserves the compact, touch-friendly character many Chromebook owners like while adding native Windows compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe trade-off is configuration headroom. The cited starting model is $699.99 in US pricing reported for 2026 and includes 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. That is adequate for browser tabs, documents and ordinary communication, but it leaves less room for virtual machines, large creative projects, local development environments or sustained multitasking. Treat the starting price as an entry configuration rather than a performance recommendation.
- Best for: a small, conventional Windows laptop that feels familiar after ChromeOS.
- Why Chromebook users adapt quickly: compact screen size and touchscreen interaction without giving up desktop Windows applications.
- Before ordering: price the memory and storage tier you actually need, and verify ports for your dock, display and other accessories.
HP OmniBook X Flip 14: the Windows 2-in-1 choice
The HP OmniBook X Flip 14 is the practical choice if your favorite Chromebook feature is the ability to fold the computer into different positions. Its Windows 11 design supports normal laptop use plus tablet, stand and tent modes. The cited configuration is $929.99 in 2026 US pricing.
A 14-inch convertible gives more screen space than a small Chromebook, but that size also matters when you hold it in one hand or use it on a couch. Check the hinge feel, weight and included pen policy for the exact configuration. Windows tablet software is capable, yet the interface is not identical to ChromeOS tablet mode, so test the applications you plan to use with touch.
- Best for: note-taking, presentations, touch navigation and flexible desk setups.
- Potential drawback: larger dimensions make tablet use less effortless than on a small Chromebook.
- Check: memory, storage, display brightness and whether the required pen or dock is included.
ASUS Zenbook A14: the travel-first option
The ASUS Zenbook A14 lineup is aimed at people who value carrying weight above all else. Cited configurations start below 2.18 pounds and include OLED and Snapdragon options, with up to 32GB of memory and a 1TB SSD in the configurations reported for 2026. The listed starting price is $1,099.99.
Snapdragon models can be excellent for battery life and portability, but they use Windows on Arm. Before buying, check each specialist application, plug-in, VPN client, printer, scanner, USB accessory and hardware security key. An application may launch through emulation yet still lack a required driver or feature. If your workflow is ordinary web, office and communication software, compatibility is usually a simpler question; if it depends on older utilities or unusual peripherals, obtain confirmation from the software or device maker.
- Best for: frequent flights, commuting and anyone who measures a laptop by carry weight.
- Best configuration approach: select memory and SSD capacity for the next several years rather than relying on the lightest base model.
- Non-negotiable check: native or verified support for every application and peripheral you cannot replace.
Microsoft Surface Laptop: premium Windows simplicity
Microsoft lists the Surface Laptop at $1,199.99 for the 13-inch model, $1,419 for the 13.8-inch model and $1,699.99 for the 15-inch model. The range lets you choose portability or a larger workspace while staying within a clean Windows design.
Microsoft’s published battery figures are test-method-dependent manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of your mixed-use runtime. For local video playback, Microsoft lists up to 22.5 hours for 13-inch, 20 hours for 13.8-inch and 19 hours for 15-inch models. Its active-web-browsing claims are up to 18, 16 and 14 hours respectively. Brightness, wireless activity, applications and configuration change real-world results.
Surface Laptop suits buyers who want a polished premium Windows machine and are comfortable paying more than the entry-level XPS 13. Compare memory, storage, screen size and port requirements rather than assuming every model has the same expansion options.

Samsung’s first-party feature story is clearest when both devices are Galaxy products. Samsung describes “Seamless file sharing” for sending large videos and documents across Galaxy devices, remote access to photos, videos and documents stored on a Galaxy phone from the PC, and the ability to use a Galaxy Book’s keyboard and trackpad across a phone and tablet. Those features make Galaxy Book the most logical Windows alternative for someone already invested in Samsung phones or tablets. They do not establish universal Android compatibility. Exact phone and tablet models, software versions, account settings and regional availability determine what works. Confirm support for your devices before treating a listed feature as a guaranteed workflow. Other Windows laptops can still connect to Android through Microsoft and third-party software, but capabilities vary by phone, region and software version. Do not pay for a Windows laptop expecting Samsung-level Galaxy-to-Galaxy behavior unless your specific devices are supported. The comparison lists the MacBook Neo from $699 in US pricing for 2026. It is the lower-cost route to macOS for someone who has outgrown ChromeOS but does not need the larger memory, storage and port allowance of the MacBook Air M5. The base configuration starts at 8GB of memory. That can be sufficient for web work, documents, messaging and moderate creative use, but it gives less headroom for large projects, many simultaneous applications or development tools than the Air M5 configuration described below. The MacBook Neo does not have a touchscreen, so it will feel less like a tablet-oriented Chromebook even though macOS supports familiar trackpad gestures. The MacBook Air M5 starts at $1,299 in the cited 2026 comparison and includes 16GB of unified memory, a 512GB SSD and Thunderbolt 4. It supports up to two external displays in the cited configuration. Those specifications provide a larger safety margin for multitasking, local development, photo work and keeping a machine for several years. The price premium buys capacity, not a Chromebook-style touchscreen: the MacBook Air has no touchscreen. Check the exact display arrangement you need because “up to two external displays” depends on the supported laptop configuration and how the built-in display is used. An Android phone works with a Mac for ordinary browser use, cloud storage, email and messaging. What you do not get is Apple’s full Continuity experience, which is designed around Apple hardware. Apple documents features such as Handoff, iPhone Mirroring, iPhone Cellular Calls, Text Message Forwarding, Universal Clipboard and AirDrop for combinations of Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro. Therefore, choose a Mac for the macOS application requirement, not because it will reproduce iPhone-to-Mac integration with an Android phone. Plan file transfers around services and applications that support both platforms, and test any phone-management workflow before moving your daily work. Recommended Free Tools ChromeOS Flex can install on compatible Windows, Mac or Linux hardware. Google describes it as providing many features available on ChromeOS devices, but it is not identical to ChromeOS. The installation process begins with checking whether the computer is a certified model; unsupported hardware can have problems with Wi-Fi, audio, sleep, graphics, cameras or firmware. Flex is appropriate when the goal is to refresh an old computer for browser-based work. It is not a method for running Windows programs, macOS applications or Chromebook Android apps as though the machine were a full Chromebook. If a Windows-only accounting package or macOS-only creative application is the reason you are shopping, select the corresponding operating system instead. A low starting price can hide the cost of adding memory or storage. The cited $699.99 XPS 13 and $699 MacBook Neo configurations both start at 8GB memory, which is materially less flexible than the 16GB/512GB MacBook Air M5 configuration. If you routinely keep dozens of tabs open alongside meetings, development tools or creative applications, budget for the higher tier at the start. USB-C describes a connector shape, not identical capabilities. Docks, displays, charging, storage and specialty devices can require specific USB, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt or driver support. Check the laptop’s documented standards and the accessory’s requirements together. Windows on Arm can be an excellent travel platform, yet emulated applications cannot substitute for a missing kernel driver or unsupported peripheral utility. Obtain a written compatibility statement for business-critical equipment before selecting a Snapdragon configuration. Android is an ecosystem, not one hardware-and-software specification. Samsung’s documented Galaxy features are strongest in a Galaxy-to-Galaxy setup. Another Android phone may offer different sharing, notification or control capabilities through Microsoft or third-party tools, and those capabilities can change with region and software version. Export or synchronize files from the Chromebook’s local Downloads folder before signing out. Confirm that documents stored in Google Drive, photos, password managers and browser bookmarks are available through the services’ Windows or macOS applications or web interfaces. ChromeOS keyboard shortcuts, shelf behavior, window snapping and file permissions differ from Windows and macOS. Spend the first day mapping the shortcuts you use most, installing the correct cloud-drive client and setting default applications for documents, links and media. Install the required application, connect every peripheral, join meetings, open your largest files and perform the phone-transfer tasks you expect to use. This catches driver, account, architecture and display problems while the Chromebook remains available as a fallback. Buy the Dell XPS 13 laptop when you want the most Chromebook-like compact Windows format and your software is standard x86 Windows-compatible. Choose the HP OmniBook X Flip 14 when folding modes and touch matter more than minimum size. Choose the ASUS Zenbook A14 for travel only after checking Windows-on-Arm compatibility. Select Microsoft Surface Laptop for a premium Windows experience with a choice of sizes. Select Samsung Galaxy Book when your existing Galaxy phone and tablet are central to the workflow. For macOS software, the MacBook Neo keeps entry cost down, while the MacBook Air M5 is the safer long-term choice when 16GB memory, 512GB storage, Thunderbolt 4 or two external displays matter. If you only need a modern browser on old hardware, investigate ChromeOS Flex—but do not confuse that reuse option with a solution for Windows or macOS applications. No. ChromeOS Flex provides many ChromeOS features on compatible computers, but it is not Windows and does not run native Windows or macOS applications. It can be a good choice when you need macOS software. Android works for web, cloud and messaging tasks, but Apple Continuity features such as Handoff, AirDrop and iPhone Mirroring are designed for Apple-device combinations. Samsung Galaxy Book has the clearest documented first-party integration, including Galaxy file sharing, remote phone-storage access and keyboard/trackpad control. Confirm support for your exact Galaxy models, software versions and region. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
