For most families, start with Khanmigo if you want a curriculum-linked tutor and parent-visible activity. Consider supervised Gemini experiences when your child already uses a Google education or parent-managed account and you can apply the required age settings and Family Link controls. Whichever service you choose, treat every AI response as a draft to check together—not as an unquestionable authority.

What makes an AI learning tool child-safe?

“Child-safe” is not a permanent certification. It is a combination of age eligibility, account supervision, content safeguards, privacy practices and learning design that reduces foreseeable risks. A useful family tool should help a child reason, practice and ask better questions without quietly completing assessed work or exposing the child to unsuitable material.

Evaluate six things before creating an account:

  • Curriculum connection: Is the tutor tied to lessons and standards your child is actually studying, or is it a general chatbot whose usefulness depends on the prompt?
  • Eligibility and access: Does the service support your child’s age, country, account type and school arrangement? Requirements can differ between a consumer account and a school-managed account.
  • Parent visibility: Can a parent or guardian review chats, activity or settings without relying on the child to provide screenshots?
  • Safety design: Are there age-appropriate content policies, abuse reporting and escalation processes? These are safeguards, not guarantees that an answer will always be suitable or correct.
  • Learning behavior: Does the tool offer hints, questions, worked examples and feedback, or does it make it easy to copy a finished answer?
  • Privacy: What information is collected, how long is it retained, and do school and consumer accounts receive different protections?

These checks matter because children often share devices and accounts. Common Sense Media’s 2026 AI Use by Tweens and Teens census (ages 9–17) found that 26% use AI on a shared family device. Separate child profiles, parental controls and a routine for reviewing activity therefore matter even when a product advertises strong safety policies.

Our top picks at a glance

Tool Best fit Curriculum alignment Parent visibility Access considerations
Khanmigo Families wanting a guided tutor linked to lessons Directly connected to Khan Academy’s library across math, humanities, coding and social studies Children’s chat history and activities are visible to parents or guardians; where applicable, teachers and school administrators can also see them A parent subscription can enable access for up to 10 children under 18; confirm current eligibility and availability for your location
Supervised Gemini experiences Households already using Google education or parent-managed accounts Broad education assistant; usefulness depends on the school or Google account context Managed through account, age and device controls; the exact review features depend on whether the account is school-managed or consumer-managed Availability varies by age, account type, school administration, geography and settings; use Family Link where applicable and verify the current configuration

Neither option should be treated as an autonomous teacher. The deciding difference is workflow: Khanmigo starts from a defined learning library and explicitly tells children that adults may see their activity, while supervised Gemini is most practical when a family already has the necessary Google account and controls in place.

Khanmigo: the strongest default for family tutoring

What it does

Khan Academy describes Khanmigo as an AI-powered personal tutor and teaching assistant for learners and families. Its content library spans math, humanities, coding and social studies. Instead of simply returning an answer, it is positioned to guide a learner through questions and explanations so the child does more of the thinking.

That curriculum connection is valuable for families who want an AI conversation to reinforce what a child is already learning. A tutor can point to a concept, ask for the next step or provide a worked example without switching to an unrelated explanation from the open web.

Why parents may prefer it

Khan Academy’s safety documentation states that children’s chat history and activities are visible to parents or guardians and, when applicable, to a teacher and school administrator. The service also gives children explicit notice of that visibility. Khan Academy’s Help Center wording, updated July 2, 2025, says: “Every child who has access to Khanmigo receives clear communication that their chat history and activities are visible to parents or guardians and, if applicable, their teacher and school administrator.”

That disclosure supports a healthier expectation: an AI tutor is part of the child’s learning environment, not a private adult-like conversation. A parent subscription can provide access for up to 10 children under 18, which is useful for a household with several learners. The current subscription terms, age gates and country availability should be checked before signing up because those details can change.

How to use Khanmigo without outsourcing homework

  1. Start from the lesson. Have the child open the relevant Khan Academy topic or assignment before asking the tutor for help.
  2. Ask for a hint or question. Prompts such as “Ask me one question at a time” or “Give me a hint, not the final answer” keep the learner engaged.
  3. Require an explanation. After solving a problem, ask the child to explain why the method works in their own words.
  4. Check the result. Compare the response with the lesson, textbook or teacher’s instructions. An AI can still make a confident mistake.
  5. Review activity together. Use the parent-visible history to discuss misunderstandings, unsafe prompts or moments when the child copied rather than learned.

Limitations to understand

  • Parent visibility does not mean every response is accurate, unbiased or developmentally perfect.
  • Access and features may vary by country, age and account arrangement.
  • A curriculum-linked tutor can still produce an incorrect explanation; important facts and calculations need independent checking.
  • Visibility is useful only if an adult actually reviews activity and talks with the child about it.

Supervised Gemini: a practical choice for Google-connected households

What the supervised experience is

Google for Education presents Gemini as an education service and provides youth AI-literacy resources endorsed by ConnectSafely and the Family Online Safety Institute. Google’s Safer Internet Day 2025 material says it worked with child-safety and development experts on age-appropriate content-safety policies and built an age-friendly version of Gemini for teens.

Family Link supplies app-approval and screen-time controls. Google’s guardians’ guide places parents and guardians in charge of children’s access outside school and describes strict policy guidelines for Gemini. In practice, however, “Gemini” is not one identical product for every child. A school-managed account may be governed by an administrator, while a parent-managed consumer account uses different age and family settings.

When it makes sense

Choose this route when your child already has a Google education or parent-managed account, the school permits the service where relevant, and you are prepared to configure Family Link and review the available controls. It can be convenient for brainstorming, explaining a difficult concept, creating practice questions or comparing multiple ways to solve a problem.

  • Whether the specific Gemini experience is available to that account, rather than merely available in the family’s region.
  • Which Family Link app-approval, screen-time and content settings are active.

Google for Education’s stated aim is “providing safe, secure and enriching learning environments for students everywhere.” That goal does not remove the need for household supervision or fact-checking.

Use prompts that preserve learning

  1. Set the role: “Act as a patient tutor for a 12-year-old. Ask questions before giving an explanation.”
  2. Limit the output: Request one hint, a short example or a five-question quiz instead of a complete essay.
  3. Show the child’s work: Ask the tool to identify the first incorrect step rather than redo the entire assignment.
  4. Make checking part of the task: Ask for assumptions, sources to consult or a second method, then verify against the teacher’s materials.
  5. Stop when personal information appears: Remove names, addresses, school identifiers, health details and private family events from the chat.

Khanmigo or supervised Gemini: how to decide

Choose Khanmigo when structure is the priority

Khanmigo is the better starting point if your family wants a defined learning library, a tutor that emphasizes guidance and a clearly documented parent-view model. It is especially suitable when a child needs regular practice in subjects covered by Khan Academy and an adult wants a straightforward place to review activity.

Choose supervised Gemini when account integration is the priority

Supervised Gemini is a reasonable option when your child’s school or family already uses Google accounts and the required controls are available. Its broad assistant format can support many subjects, but the educational experience and oversight depend more heavily on account type, administrator policy and local availability.

Use neither as an unsupervised replacement for a teacher

If no adult can review activity, the child cannot distinguish a plausible-sounding error from a correct explanation, or the school prohibits generative AI for the assignment, do not use an AI tutor for that task. A worksheet, textbook, teacher conference or human tutor may be safer and more effective.

Set up a child-safe AI routine

1. Create the correct account

Use the parent- or school-managed enrollment path required by the service. Do not bypass an age gate by entering a false birth date. Confirm who owns the account, who can reset it and which adults can view activity.

2. Configure device and family controls

Turn on Family Link or an equivalent device-management system where applicable. Review app approvals, screen-time limits and the ability to restrict new services. On shared devices, use separate profiles so one child’s history and settings are not mixed with another family member’s.

3. Establish a review agreement

Tell the child exactly what adults can see and why. Review a few conversations together at a predictable time each week, rather than secretly monitoring every question. Look for copied answers, requests involving personal data, bullying or sexual content, and signs that the child is relying on the tool instead of practicing.

4. Teach verification

Explain that AI can be wrong, biased or overconfident. Important facts should be checked against a teacher, textbook or primary source. For health, safety, legal or emergency questions, involve a qualified adult or professional instead of accepting an AI response.

5. Protect privacy

Keep prompts free of sensitive personal information. Do not enter a child’s full name, address, phone number, passwords, precise location, medical record, school identification number or another person’s private details. Read the current privacy notice and education terms; school and consumer accounts can have different data controls.

6. Set a homework rule

Allow hints, worked examples, quizzes, brainstorming and feedback. Do not ask for a submission-ready essay, solved take-home test or code that the child cannot explain. If a teacher has an AI policy, follow it even when a tool technically allows the request.

Prompt patterns that encourage real learning

Goal Better prompt Why it helps
Math support “Ask me what I tried, then give one hint at a time. Do not reveal the final answer until I explain the method.” Preserves problem-solving and exposes the child’s misconception.
Reading comprehension “Quiz me on this chapter with three questions. Wait for my answer and explain any mistake using the text.” Builds recall and evidence-based reasoning.
Writing feedback “Point out two places where my argument is unclear and ask questions that help me revise. Do not rewrite the paragraph.” Keeps authorship with the student.
Coding practice “Help me locate the bug. Show the relevant line and ask me what it should do before suggesting a fix.” Teaches debugging rather than copy-and-paste.
Fact checking “List which parts of your answer are uncertain and what source I should consult to verify them.” Makes uncertainty visible and prompts independent checking.

Common failure modes and fixes

The tool gives a polished but incorrect answer

Ask it to show its assumptions and a second method, then verify the result in the child’s lesson or another authoritative source. If the disagreement affects grades or safety, ask the teacher or a qualified professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The child repeatedly requests final answers

Change the household rule and the prompt: require a hint-first workflow, ask the child to submit their own attempt, and review the activity history for patterns. Disable access for assignments where the teacher forbids AI.

Controls are missing or confusing

Identify whether the account is consumer-managed or school-managed. Check the current age, country and administrator settings, then contact the school or service support channel. Do not assume that a control documented for one account type exists in another.

A shared device exposes another child’s chats

Create separate operating-system or browser profiles, sign out after each session and avoid saving passwords in a shared profile. Review account recovery settings so one child cannot enter another child’s history.

The conversation drifts into sensitive content

Stop the session, save only the information needed for a report, and tell a trusted adult. Use the service’s abuse or safety-reporting process when appropriate. Revisit filters, supervision and the child’s understanding of what should never be entered into an AI chat.

Questions parents should ask before signing up

  • What is the minimum age in our country, and can a parent legally create or supervise the account?
  • Who can see chat history: the parent, school administrator, teacher, service provider or nobody by default?
  • Can I delete activity, and what information may remain under the current privacy terms?
  • What happens when the AI detects self-harm, exploitation, bullying or another urgent safety issue?
  • Can the child use hints and explanations without receiving a complete answer?
  • What settings change when the child turns a certain age?
  • Does the school allow this tool for the specific assignment?

Bottom line

Khanmigo is the clearest first choice for most families because it combines a curriculum-linked library, a guidance-oriented tutor and documented visibility for parents or guardians. Supervised Gemini can be a sensible second choice for households already using Google education or parent-managed accounts, provided the family confirms eligibility and configures Family Link and other controls. In both cases, safety depends on the surrounding routine: accurate account setup, transparent supervision, privacy-conscious prompts and a firm expectation that the child verifies and explains what the AI produces.
