The best cheap TV for Xbox One depends first on which console you own. The original Xbox One is a 1080p, 60Hz machine without HDR10. Xbox One S and Xbox One X can output 2160p at 60Hz and HDR10, although only the One X can render supported games natively in 4K. For any model, enable Game Mode, verify the HDMI port can carry the signal you want, and judge the set by measured responsiveness, HDR quality, room brightness, size and current price—not by a 120Hz or 144Hz label alone.
Among current budget examples, RTINGS lists the TCL QM6K as a 2026 budget pick, while the 2024 Hisense U6N is an alternative when its price and availability are attractive. Neither is automatically right for every Xbox owner. The buying process below shows how to match a television to your console, room and upgrade plans without paying for features the Xbox One cannot use.
Identify your Xbox One before choosing a television
The three Xbox One models have different video capabilities. Start by checking the label on the console or the model shown in Settings before comparing televisions.
| Console | Maximum listed output | HDR10 | What that means for a TV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Xbox One | 1080p at 60Hz | Not supported | A 4K/HDR set will display games, but the console will not create a 4K or HDR10 signal. Prioritize low input lag, Game Mode and a suitable size. |
| Xbox One S | 2160p at 60Hz | Supported | Requires a 4K-capable television for 4K output and an HDR-capable television plus HDR content for HDR. Games are scaled rather than rendered natively in 4K. |
| Xbox One X | 2160p at 60Hz | Supported | Can render supported games in native 4K. A 4K HDR television can show the console’s highest-quality output. |
Microsoft’s Xbox One family specification sheet lists 2160p at 60Hz and HDR10 for both the One S and One X, and 1080p at 60Hz with no HDR10 for the original model. The distinction matters more than the television’s marketing category: buying an expensive 4K panel for the original console changes neither its resolution nor its dynamic range.

Do you need a 4K TV for Xbox One?
No. A 4K television is optional for the original Xbox One and will not make its games sharper than the console’s 1080p output. It becomes useful with the One S or One X, but the two consoles use 4K differently.
Xbox One S: 4K video and upscaling
Xbox One S can output 2160p, play 4K video and 4K Blu-ray, and upscale other content. Microsoft distinguishes this scaling from native game rendering. A television therefore receives a 4K signal from the One S in supported situations, but the game itself is not necessarily calculated at 3840 by 2160.
Xbox One X: native 4K where a game supports it
One X has the hardware for native 4K in games that provide an enhanced mode. Other games may use dynamic resolution or an upscaled image. A 4K panel lets you see the output the console supplies, but it cannot turn a non-enhanced title into native 4K.
Why 120Hz and 144Hz are not Xbox One requirements
The Xbox One family sends video at up to 60Hz. A television advertised as 120Hz or 144Hz can still be a sensible long-term purchase for a later console or gaming PC, yet those higher refresh rates do not increase the frame rate of an Xbox One. Do not sacrifice lower input lag, contrast or a size that suits your room simply to obtain a refresh-rate number the current console cannot use.

Budget Xbox One TV candidates and what their specifications mean
The following models are reference points, not a universal ranking. Prices, regional model suffixes, firmware and stock change quickly. RTINGS’ 2026 budget roundup is an independent recommendation source; feature descriptions from TCL are manufacturer claims rather than independent measurements.
| Model | Relevant features | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| TCL QM6K | Two HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K at 144Hz, 1080p at 288Hz and variable refresh rate (VRR) | One X owners who want a 4K set and buyers planning a newer console or PC | Its 144Hz, 288Hz and VRR capabilities exceed Xbox One’s 60Hz output. RTINGS named it a 2026 budget pick; verify the exact regional model and current price. |
| Hisense U6N | Low input lag in Game Mode and local dimming; ports limited to 60Hz | One S or One X users who value HDR contrast and do not need high-refresh hardware | It is a 2024 model. Confirm that it is still sold in your region and that a sale price justifies choosing an older set. |
| TCL S2 or S3 | Game Mode, according to TCL | Original Xbox One owners seeking basic responsiveness at a low cost | TCL’s statement does not provide an independent input-lag figure. Check the specific size’s test results and HDMI details. |
| TCL S4 | 4K and Auto Game Mode, according to TCL | One S buyers who want automatic switching into a gaming preset | Auto Game Mode is a convenience feature; confirm how it behaves with your console and whether the selected input supports the desired signal. |
| TCL Q6 | Game Accelerator 120, according to TCL | Buyers considering later high-refresh hardware | The feature name does not establish Xbox One frame-rate gains. Treat it as future-proofing and verify independent measurements. |
A television’s model family is not enough to identify performance. A 55-inch version can have different brightness, panel behavior or ports from a similarly named 43-inch version, and regional suffixes can change the specification. Read the full model number before ordering.
How to compare cheap TVs for Xbox One
1. Responsiveness with Game Mode enabled
Input lag is the delay between a controller action and the resulting image. TV image processing can add delay. Xbox Wire editor in chief Will Tuttle explains: “Many modern TV’s implement a setting called ‘Game Mode’ which reduces the amount of processing the TV does, thereby reducing the latency between when you press a button and when the character reacts on screen.” Compare independent input-lag measurements made in Game Mode, not a television’s movie or vivid preset.
Look for the test resolution and refresh rate as well as the average figure. A set may be quick at 1080p yet behave differently at 4K HDR. If a review does not state the conditions, treat the number as incomplete evidence rather than a guarantee for your particular size.

2. HDR10 capability and actual HDR picture quality
One S and One X need an HDR10-capable television and HDR game or video to produce HDR. A specification that merely says “HDR” is not enough to establish the required format. Brightness, black level, contrast and local dimming determine whether HDR looks convincing; compatibility alone does not guarantee a dramatic image.
Local dimming can improve contrast by controlling sections of the backlight. It can also produce halos around bright objects or behave differently by scene. The Hisense U6N is described as having local dimming, but inspect independent testing for the exact size if dark-room performance matters.
3. Brightness and reflections in your room
A bright living room can wash out a dim display, while a dark room reveals weak black levels and distracting blooming. Identify where lamps and windows sit relative to the screen. Compare sustained brightness and reflection handling from independent tests rather than relying on a peak figure, which may apply only to a small highlight or a short measurement.

Choose a size that lets you see the game interface without moving your head and that fits the stand or wall. A larger 4K screen can make fine detail easier to appreciate from the same seat, but it does not improve the console’s underlying render resolution. For a 1080p original Xbox One, an appropriately sized display and a comfortable viewing distance usually matter more than chasing a high pixel count.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. HDMI ports and your complete signal path
Count the ports you will actually use: the console, soundbar or receiver, streaming device and any switch. Check the manual for port-specific 4K, HDR10 and HDCP support. The One S 4K guidance calls for a High Speed HDMI cable; an older cable, receiver or switch can prevent the required signal even when the television itself is compatible. One S and One X list HDCP 2.2 support, so every device in the path must handle the applicable protection standard.
6. Upgrade value, not unused specifications
Pay extra for HDMI 2.1, VRR or 120Hz only when you have a realistic plan to connect hardware that uses them. The QM6K’s HDMI 2.1 ports, 144Hz 4K mode, 288Hz 1080p mode and VRR are useful examples of future-oriented features, but none raises an Xbox One’s maximum 60Hz output. For a console you will keep for years, future-proofing may justify the premium; for a short-term budget replacement, it may not.
Set up an Xbox One for the lowest practical delay
- Connect the console directly to the television’s HDMI input while establishing the baseline. Bypass a receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch until the picture and HDR status are correct.
- Open the television’s picture settings for that input and select Game Mode. On some sets, the option is under a gaming, input or picture-presets menu. Do not assume the setting applies to every HDMI port.
- On an Xbox One S or One X, open the console’s display settings and choose the highest resolution the television and cable path can support. The console will scale down when connected to a lower-capability display.
- Enable HDR only after the television reports HDR10 support on that input. Use an HDR game or video for the check; a standard-dynamic-range title cannot demonstrate HDR.
- Inspect the television manual for an Enhanced, UHD Color, Input Signal Plus or similarly named HDMI option. Enable the setting only on the port carrying the console, and use the label and instructions for your exact model.
- Confirm the cable is a High Speed HDMI cable for an Xbox One S 4K connection. Replace an unmarked or damaged cable before changing several other settings.
- Reconnect your receiver, switch or soundbar one device at a time. If 4K or HDR disappears after adding a device, that component or its cable is the point to investigate.
- Play a familiar game in Game Mode and compare controller response with the television’s standard picture preset. Keep the mode that provides the best responsiveness without clipping shadow or highlight detail.
Troubleshoot missing 4K or HDR
The console only offers 1080p
- Confirm that the console is a One S or One X. The original Xbox One cannot output 2160p or HDR10.
- Check that the selected HDMI port supports 4K at 60Hz; some televisions reserve full capability for one or two inputs.
- Enable the model’s enhanced HDMI-input option and reconnect the console directly.
- Test a known High Speed HDMI cable. A receiver or switch that lacks 4K, HDR10 or HDCP 2.2 support can force the entire path to a lower mode.
4K works but HDR does not
- Verify HDR10 support on the television and the specific HDMI input.
- Use HDR game or video content and check the console’s video-information screen rather than judging a standard title by eye.
- Remove intermediate equipment temporarily. If HDR returns with a direct connection, check that device’s firmware, input mode and HDCP support.
- Recheck the television’s enhanced-input setting after changing picture presets; some models store it separately for each port.
The picture is delayed or controls feel sluggish
- Confirm Game Mode is active for the input currently being used.
- Disable extra motion smoothing, noise reduction and other processing if they remain enabled in the gaming preset.
- Check whether a receiver or switch is adding processing, and compare a direct console connection.
- Compare independent lag results at the resolution you use. A review measured at 1080p may not predict 4K HDR behavior.
HDR looks dark or disappointing
- Check that the source is actually HDR10 and that the television has switched into its HDR picture mode.
- Compare the set’s HDR brightness and contrast measurements for your room, not just its HDR logo.
- Try a different HDR game or scene before concluding that the panel is defective; titles use HDR differently.
- If local dimming produces visible halos, compare it with the television’s alternate local-dimming setting and decide which artifact is less distracting.
Which budget choice fits each Xbox One owner?
Original Xbox One
Spend on a responsive Game Mode, dependable HDMI switching and a size that suits the seating distance. HDR and 4K labels are optional because this console cannot supply either signal. A basic television that tests well at 1080p can be a better value than a premium 4K model with processing you will never use.

Xbox One S
Choose a 4K television with HDR10 support when you watch 4K video, use 4K Blu-ray or want the console’s scaled 2160p output. A 60Hz-capable model is sufficient for the console. The Hisense U6N can be considered when its local dimming, Game Mode lag and remaining stock fit your room and budget; verify the current regional listing because it is from 2024.

Xbox One X
Prioritize a 4K HDR10 panel, low measured lag in Game Mode and enough brightness and contrast for your room. The TCL QM6K is a current budget candidate with substantial future-facing connectivity, while the Hisense U6N may be attractive when discounted and when 60Hz HDMI is all you need. Compare the exact size and independent measurements before deciding.
Xbox One now, newer console later
Future-proofing can make HDMI 2.1, VRR and a 120Hz-or-higher panel worthwhile. The QM6K’s listed high-refresh modes illustrate the kind of capability a later console or PC can use. Treat those features as an upgrade-plan decision, not as a reason to expect more frames from Xbox One.
Price, availability and model checks
Budget television prices and inventory can change between the day you shortlist a model and the day you buy it. Recheck the current price, stock, model suffix, included remote, HDMI-port layout and firmware notes for your country. An older television can be a good deal when clearance pricing is substantial, but limited availability can make replacement or warranty service harder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare the total setup cost rather than the screen price alone. You may need a High Speed HDMI cable for an Xbox One S 4K connection, but do not buy one merely because a television advertises 120Hz. A cable cannot add HDR or refresh-rate capability missing from the console, television or intermediate equipment.
Final buying checklist
- Write down whether your console is the original Xbox One, One S or One X.
- Match the television’s resolution and HDR10 support to that console’s output.
- Find an independent Game Mode input-lag measurement at your intended resolution.
- Check brightness, contrast, local dimming behavior and reflections for your room.
- Choose the screen size from your actual seating distance and available furniture.
- Verify the exact HDMI port, enhanced-input setting, HDCP support and cable requirement.
- Ignore 120Hz, 144Hz and VRR as Xbox One performance upgrades; buy them only for future hardware.
- Recheck regional price, stock, model suffix and firmware before placing the order.
The practical verdict is straightforward: buy a low-lag Game Mode television sized for your room, then pay for 4K HDR10 only when you own an Xbox One S or One X and will use those capabilities. The TCL QM6K is the strongest current budget candidate cited here for buyers who also want newer-console features; the Hisense U6N is a sensible 60Hz alternative when its availability and sale price make it worthwhile. For the original Xbox One, a well-tested 1080p set can deliver the same console image for less.
