For a zero-cost starting point, Proton VPN Free is the clearest choice: its 2026 review coverage reports unlimited use, while Proton documents open-source WireGuard and OpenVPN apps with a kill switch. Choose Mullvad when a flat-price, privacy-first service matters more than finding the lowest promotional rate. Choose a VPN travel router when one connection must cover consoles, streaming sticks, work devices and other hardware that cannot run a VPN app. A VPN reduces snooping on an untrusted hotspot, but it cannot make phishing, malware, fake hotspots or unsafe downloads safe.

Which cheap option fits your public-Wi‑Fi use?

When you cannot pay

Proton VPN Free is the practical first test. A 2026 review describes it as suitable for public Wi‑Fi with unlimited usage. Proton’s documentation says its applications use open-source WireGuard and OpenVPN and include a kill switch that protects your IP address if the VPN connection drops. Free-server locations and other plan limits can change, so check the current plan screen before relying on a particular country or feature.

When predictable privacy matters more than the lowest price

Mullvad is positioned as a flat-price, privacy-oriented alternative and offers cash payment. The available current information does not establish a promotional price, streaming performance, simultaneous-device allowance or a particular audit result, so treat it as a privacy-first choice rather than automatically the cheapest service.

When several kinds of devices need protection

A VPN travel router creates one protected connection for every device that joins it. That is useful in a hotel room, rental apartment or shared workspace when you need to cover game consoles, streaming sticks, smart devices or managed work hardware that cannot install a VPN app. Hardware cost, firmware support and VPN subscription cost are separate items.

Why public Wi‑Fi deserves a cautious default

The Federal Trade Commission advises: “If you aren’t sure, it’s best to assume the network is not secure.” The FTC also notes that widespread encryption means public Wi‑Fi is usually safe, while recommending current security software, operating systems and browsers. Those statements are complementary: encryption has improved the normal experience, but you still cannot verify every hotspot or every device on it.

A coffee-shop, airport or hotel network can expose connection metadata to the local operator and may be configured incorrectly. A malicious hotspot can copy a familiar network name and wait for devices to join. A VPN encrypts traffic between your device (or travel router) and the VPN server, reducing the value of local interception. It does not prove that the hotspot is genuine, and it does not inspect every website or file for fraud.

What a VPN protects—and what it does not

Protection against local snooping

With the VPN tunnel active, people sharing the hotspot have a harder time reading the contents of traffic between your device and the VPN server. This is the main public-Wi‑Fi benefit. A kill switch adds a second safeguard: if the tunnel fails, the app can block traffic instead of silently sending it over the hotspot.

Problems a VPN cannot solve

  • Phishing: a VPN cannot tell that a convincing sign-in page is fake.
  • Malware and unsafe downloads: encrypted transport does not make a malicious file harmless.
  • Account takeover: reused passwords, stolen session cookies and missing multi-factor authentication remain risks.
  • Fake hotspots: a VPN protects the tunnel after connection, but it cannot authenticate the hotspot’s owner.
  • Compromised accounts or websites: the VPN cannot repair a breach at a service you use.

Keep the operating system, browser and security software current, prefer HTTPS, enable the VPN’s kill switch and automatic connection, and avoid entering sensitive information when the hotspot’s identity is uncertain.

Features that matter more than a low headline price

Modern tunnel protocols

Look for WireGuard or OpenVPN support. These are the modern protocol choices identified in the available guidance. If an app offers several protocols, record which one is active before troubleshooting; changing protocol can resolve a blocked or unstable connection, but may alter speed and battery use.

Kill switch behavior

Confirm what the provider calls its kill switch and whether it applies to all traffic or only selected applications. Test it on a non-sensitive connection: connect to the VPN, briefly disable the VPN connection, and verify that traffic stops rather than falling back to the hotspot. Proton documents a kill switch that protects the IP address when its connection drops; behavior on other products must be checked in their current documentation.

DNS-leak protection

DNS requests can reveal which domains you are looking up even when other traffic is tunneled. A suitable service should state how it prevents DNS leaks. If the provider does not explain the behavior clearly, treat that as an information gap rather than assuming protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy policy and independent evidence

Read the current privacy and no-logs policy, then look for a clearly described audit or other independent verification. A marketing phrase alone is not evidence. Policies, audits and retention practices can change, so save the version or date you relied on when choosing.

  • 【PROTECT YOUR NETWORK SECURITY】Our pocket wifi, unlike other vulnerable portable wifi hotspot for travel purposes supports WPA3 protocol–Preventive measures against password brute-force attacks; DNS over HTTPS & DNS over TLS–Protecting domain name system traffic and preventing data eavesdropping from malicious parties; IPv6–Built-in authentication for privacy protection, eliminating the need for network address translation.
  • 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.

Automatic connection on untrusted networks

For public Wi‑Fi, the most useful automation is “connect on untrusted networks” or an equivalent setting. Configure it before travelling, and confirm that the app does not treat every saved network as trusted by default. A manual connection is easy to forget when you are rushing through an airport or checking into a hotel.

Total term cost, renewal and device needs

Compare the amount charged for the complete billing term, not only the displayed monthly equivalent. Record the renewal price, tax treatment and cancellation conditions. Promotional rates can be limited to a particular two-year term, country or account type; they are not a permanent monthly price. Also check how many devices can be connected at once. A low rate is poor value if a household needs more connections than the plan permits.

Proton VPN Free: the no-cost starting point

What you get

The available 2026 review coverage reports unlimited use, making this the clearest option when a reader cannot pay. Proton says its apps use open-source WireGuard and OpenVPN. Its documented kill switch is designed to protect the IP address if the VPN connection drops, which directly addresses the moment when a public hotspot could otherwise receive traffic unexpectedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify before depending on it

  • Which free server locations are available in your country and at the time of travel.
  • Whether the current free tier includes the automatic-connection behavior you want.
  • Any limits on simultaneous devices or specific features.
  • How DNS requests are handled and what current privacy documentation says.

Use it for ordinary browsing, email and other routine sessions after confirming that the server location and connection policy suit you. Do not infer that unlimited usage means unlimited locations, every premium feature or a guaranteed speed level.

  • 【Repeater for Public, Hotel WiFi】Convert a public network(wired/wireless) to a private network(wired/wireless) for secure surfing. Work with Captive Portal. (Note: Most of the Free Public Wi-Fi hotspot set a time limit for users, which will disconnect your devices once the time is over. To deal with this situation, please reconnect your router to the wifi.)

Mullvad: a flat-price, privacy-first alternative

Why it belongs on the shortlist

Mullvad’s appeal is the simple privacy framing rather than a time-limited bargain. Cash payment is available, which can matter to readers who do not want a recurring card charge associated with a VPN account. That does not by itself establish anonymity, technical performance or a particular logging practice; read the current policy and independent evidence.

Questions to answer before buying

  • What is the current price in your region, and is it recurring at the same rate?
  • How many simultaneous connections are allowed?
  • Which protocols and kill-switch modes are supported by your device’s app?
  • Does the current service meet your needs for video, gaming or other latency-sensitive activity?
  • What audit or transparency evidence is currently available?

Choose Mullvad when those answers satisfy you and a stable, privacy-oriented structure is more important than chasing a temporary introductory rate.

VPN travel routers: the cheapest way to cover incompatible devices

When a router is the better buy

Installing separate apps is impractical for a game console, streaming stick, smart television, some work-managed computers or other hardware with no VPN client. A travel router joins the hotel or rental network once, establishes the VPN tunnel, and shares the protected connection with the devices you attach to it. It can also reduce the number of devices you must configure individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose one

  1. Search for “VPN travel router” or “travel router with WireGuard.”
  2. Check the exact firmware version and confirm support for WireGuard or OpenVPN.
  3. Verify the router’s advertised throughput under VPN use, not only its unencrypted Wi‑Fi speed.
  4. Confirm how it handles DNS, tunnel failure and reconnects.
  5. Check current seller, warranty and return details; hardware listings change.

Trade-offs

A router adds an upfront hardware cost, another device to carry and a configuration step. Its advantage is breadth: once correctly configured, it can cover devices that cannot run an app. Its limitation is that every connected device shares the router’s tunnel and network capacity, so a busy room can feel slower than one lightly used phone.

How to set up a VPN before joining public Wi‑Fi

  1. Install the provider’s current app or configure the router at home. Download only from the provider’s official distribution channel or the router manufacturer’s current documentation. Sign in and complete any account verification while you still have a trusted connection.
  2. Select a supported protocol. Start with WireGuard when available; use OpenVPN when it is the better-supported option for your device or network.
  3. Enable the kill switch. Read the app’s description of what it blocks and whether local-network access is affected. Save the setting and perform a brief disconnect test.
  4. Turn on automatic connection for untrusted networks. Add your home network as trusted only if the app requires an exception. Recheck the setting after an app update.
  5. Review DNS and privacy settings. Ensure the app is using its documented DNS protection and note any split-tunneling or exception rules that could send traffic outside the tunnel.
  6. Connect before sensitive work. Establish the tunnel before opening a banking session, work dashboard or private account on the hotspot.
  7. Confirm the tunnel after roaming. Moving between an access point and cellular data, or waking a sleeping laptop, can interrupt a tunnel. Check the app status before continuing.

Using a VPN travel router on a hotel or rental network

  1. Configure it on a trusted connection. Update firmware, set a unique router administrator password and import the VPN configuration before travel.
  2. Verify the upstream network method. Hotel portals may require a browser sign-in. Complete that step according to the router’s instructions before expecting downstream devices to work.
  3. Enable the VPN profile. Select the verified WireGuard or OpenVPN profile and confirm that the router reports an active tunnel.
  4. Join devices to the router’s private Wi‑Fi. Do not mix the protected devices onto the hotel’s open network after setup.
  5. Test each important device. Check a work laptop, console or streaming stick separately; one device working does not prove every client is using the tunnel.
  6. Disconnect and reset after checkout. Remove saved hotel credentials and disable the travel profile until the next trusted setup.

Cost and renewal checks that prevent surprises

Write down four figures before paying: the amount charged today, the full billing term, the renewal amount and any taxes or currency conversion. A displayed monthly equivalent can hide a large one-time charge for a two-year term. Promotional pricing is time-sensitive and may differ by geography. Recheck the checkout page immediately before purchase and save the cancellation deadline.

For a free plan, the monetary cost is zero, but the trade-offs may be server choice, device allowance or feature availability. For a paid app, divide the complete term charge by its months and then compare the renewal separately. For a router, add hardware, subscription and replacement or return risk; the router is not itself a free VPN service.

Common failures and practical fixes

The VPN will not connect at a hotel or airport

  • Open the hotspot’s captive-portal sign-in page first, then retry the VPN.
  • Switch between the supported protocols if the network blocks one.
  • Move closer to the access point and test cellular data to separate Wi‑Fi congestion from an app problem.
  • Do not disable the kill switch for sensitive work just to force traffic through.

Websites stop loading after enabling the kill switch

Check whether the tunnel is actually established, whether the network requires portal authentication, and whether the app is blocking local DNS or LAN access by design. Reconnect on a trusted network and review the app’s documented exceptions instead of leaving the kill switch off permanently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection is slow

  • Test a nearer VPN server if the service offers a choice.
  • Compare one device with several devices sharing the same router.
  • Try the other supported protocol.
  • Remember that a crowded hotspot, hotel backhaul or router CPU can be the bottleneck rather than the VPN subscription.

A device cannot use a VPN app

Use a travel router that supports the required protocol, or leave that device off the public network. Confirm firmware compatibility and test the exact model before travelling.

The tunnel drops when the device sleeps

Check that automatic connection is enabled and that the operating system is not suspending the VPN app. After waking the device, verify the VPN status before opening private accounts. If the app cannot reconnect reliably, keep the kill switch active and use cellular data for sensitive activity.

A simple decision checklist

  • Choose Proton VPN Free if paying is impossible and its current free locations and limits meet your needs.
  • Choose Mullvad if a privacy-first, flat-price model and cash payment are more important than a promotional bargain.
  • Choose a VPN travel router if several devices—or devices without VPN apps—must share one protected connection.
  • Reject any option that cannot clearly document a modern protocol, kill switch, DNS-leak handling, privacy policy and automatic connection behavior.
  • Recheck price, renewal, server availability, audits and device limits immediately before purchase because each can change.

Bottom line

For most people starting with public Wi‑Fi protection, Proton VPN Free is the lowest-cost experiment because unlimited use and a documented kill switch remove the biggest barriers to trying a VPN. Mullvad is the better fit for readers who value a straightforward privacy posture and cash payment more than a temporary discount. A VPN travel router is the economical solution when the real requirement is coverage for a room full of incompatible devices. Whichever route you choose, keep your software updated, use HTTPS, enable automatic connection and the kill switch, and remember that a VPN is only one layer of security.
