For affordable over-ear headphones, start with the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 if active noise cancelling (ANC) matters, or the JBL Tune 720BT if long advertised battery life and a wired fallback matter more. Soundcore’s Q20i is another over-ear ANC option, but its UK-focused pricing guidance should not be treated as a price for other markets. The evidence supports these three candidates—not a definitive five-model ranking—and does not establish current local prices. Check your market’s price and availability before deciding.
Which cheap over-ear headphones are worth considering?
These candidates cover different priorities. The fit category and source type matter: reviewer findings are not manufacturer specifications, and a long battery claim does not imply ANC.

For ANC on a budget: Life Q20 2024
RTINGS names the Life Q20 2024 its “Best Cheap Wireless Headphones” pick and identifies it as over-ear, closed-back and noise cancelling. Its review describes a lightweight, comfortable design, while also pointing out a flimsier build than the higher-priced pick and tradeoffs in comfort and noise isolation. RTINGS reports a V-shaped sound signature and 49 hours of battery life. Those are the reviewer’s findings, not results from a test by this publication.

Be precise when shopping: RTINGS’ recommendation is the Life Q20 2024. Soundcore’s guide lists the separate Q20i. Do not assume the names refer to the same model or that one model’s specifications apply to the other.
For battery life and wired listening: JBL Tune 720BT
JBL describes the Tune 720BT as wireless over-ear headphones and lists up to 76 hours of battery life, multipoint Bluetooth 5.3, a detachable audio cable, app EQ and a weight of 220 g. JBL also says a five-minute charge provides three hours of music. These are manufacturer specifications. The cited page does not list ANC, so do not choose this model on the assumption that it cancels noise.

For another entry-level ANC option: Soundcore Q20i
Soundcore’s UK guide describes the Q20i as over-ear, with ANC and multipoint, and frames it as an under-£50 entry-level pick. That is the manufacturer’s UK-market positioning, not a verified current price or a price recommendation for other countries. The guide does not state a battery figure.

No, not if you require headphones that surround the ears. RTINGS categorizes the Sony WH-CH520 as on-ear, so it does not meet a strict over-ear shortlist. When is a step-up model worth checking?
The Sony WH-CH720N may suit shoppers who can stretch their budget, but whether it counts as “cheap” depends on the market and price at the time of purchase. What Hi-Fi? describes it as over-ear with ANC and reports 35 hours of battery life with ANC on and 50 hours with it off. How to check fit, features and value before buying
- Confirm the fit. Look for “over-ear” in the exact model’s specifications. Do not substitute on-ear headphones if you want earcups that enclose the ears.
- Decide whether ANC is essential. The Life Q20 2024 and Q20i are identified as noise cancelling in the cited sources. JBL’s cited Tune 720BT feature list does not establish ANC.
- Compare battery claims on equal terms. Note whether the figure is a reviewer finding or a manufacturer’s “up to” claim, and whether ANC is on or off. Do not compare runtimes as if they were measured under identical conditions.
- Check wired fallback and connectivity. JBL explicitly lists a detachable audio cable, Bluetooth 5.3 and multipoint. Do not assume another model has those features unless its exact product information says so.
- Check comfort in the intended session. Ear shape, clamp and cup fit affect comfort. RTINGS describes the Life Q20 2024 as lightweight and comfortable but also notes comfort tradeoffs; fit can vary from person to person.
