If you want a low-cost Steam game with gothic atmosphere, grim fantasy, or Souls-like combat, start with Blade of Darkness for deliberate third-person melee, ELDERBORN for a fast first-person campaign, Morbid: The Seven Acolytes for Lovecraftian horror and build choices, Fall of Light: Darkest Edition for story and puzzles, or Eldest Souls for a concentrated pixel-art boss challenge.
The captured Steam listings put three of these games at $14.99, one at $19.99, and one at $24.99 before regional pricing or temporary discounts. The right choice depends less on the lowest sticker price than on the kind of combat, camera, exploration, and difficulty you actually enjoy.

How to choose the right game
- Want a traditional dark-fantasy viewpoint? Choose Blade of Darkness. Its third-person presentation keeps your character, weapon reach, and enemy spacing visible while you learn its demanding melee system.
- Prefer speed and immersion? ELDERBORN puts the action in first person and focuses on movement, weapon handling, and a short, hand-crafted route rather than a huge campaign.
- Need horror, ranged options, and build decisions? Morbid combines an isometric view with firearms, melee weapons, perks, and separate health, stamina, and sanity concerns.
- Care more about narrative and exploration than a pure boss gauntlet? Fall of Light: Darkest Edition adds environmental puzzles, a companion-protection objective, and a story about a world consumed by Darkness.
- Want every session to revolve around learning bosses? Eldest Souls is the clearest choice. Its pixel-art structure is built around fast, demanding boss fights, with the free Depths of the Forgotten expansion adding more encounters and customization.
Blade of Darkness: old-school third-person melee
Blade of Darkness is the most direct pick for someone who wants a classic dark-fantasy action adventure rather than a modern, accessibility-first interpretation of the genre. Steam describes it as a hardcore fantasy action-adventure with unique combat mechanics and role-playing elements, and identifies it as an early pioneer of the “soulsborne” style. That framing matters: expect combat to be the center of the experience, not a light system attached to a conventional adventure.

What the combat emphasizes
The third-person camera lets you read the relationship between your character, weapon, and enemies. Deliberate attacks and positioning matter more than simply holding an attack button. The game is aimed at players who enjoy learning enemy timing, accepting punishment for careless swings, and gradually becoming more consistent. Its melee focus also makes the choice of character meaningful, because the game supports replay through character selection rather than presenting one identical run for everyone.
Why it suits gothic-fantasy fans
Its tone is dark fantasy rather than light heroic adventure. Gore, dangerous melee encounters, and a severe atmosphere are part of the appeal. If you want a game that feels like a historical ancestor to later Souls-like action RPGs, this is the most thematically and mechanically obvious starting point in the list.
Who should skip it
Players who need a relaxed difficulty curve, a strongly guided story, or ranged combat as a core option may find its hardcore design less welcoming. It is also a poor fit if you specifically want a top-down view or a short boss-rush format. Pick it when the act of mastering third-person melee is itself the reason you are shopping.
ELDERBORN: a focused first-person slasher
ELDERBORN changes the feel of a Souls-like by moving the camera into first person. Instead of watching an avatar perform attacks from behind, you read threats through your own viewpoint and respond with movement, positioning, and weapon choice. Steam presents it as a first-person dark-fantasy slasher with brutal melee combat and Souls-like role-playing progression.

A compact campaign
The Steam listing describes a hand-crafted world and an 8–10 hour length for a single playthrough. That makes ELDERBORN a useful recommendation when you want a complete dark-fantasy experience without committing to a sprawling campaign. The shorter scope does not mean the combat is casual: the game is built around repeated encounters in which movement and attack decisions carry immediate consequences.
Eleven weapons, different decisions
Steam lists 11 weapons. That gives the game a concrete equipment range without requiring you to manage an enormous inventory. Try it if you enjoy learning how each weapon changes distance, rhythm, and the way you approach a room. The first-person view can feel more immediate than a conventional third-person Souls-like, but it also gives you less detached awareness of what is happening behind you.
Best audience
Choose ELDERBORN when you want speed, close-range intensity, and a campaign you can finish in a handful of focused sessions. It is less suitable for readers seeking extensive narrative branching, a large open world, or a long-term character-building project.

Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is the most overtly horror-oriented recommendation here. It uses an isometric viewpoint and combines horrorpunk, Lovecraftian imagery, and graphic body horror with action-RPG systems. The developer description on Steam calls it “a Horrorpunk Action RPG filled with Lovecraftian horrors and Cronenbergian gore,” describing it as an especially gruesome isometric Souls-like.

Combat and resource management
Unlike the games built around melee alone, Morbid includes both melee weapons and guns. That changes how you solve encounters: you can think about distance as well as timing, while still dealing with the close-range danger expected from a Souls-like. The game also tracks health, stamina, and sanity. These are separate pressures rather than one generic life bar, so reckless attacks, exhaustion, and exposure to horror can affect how safely you move through a fight.
Build choices and bosses
Perk levelling gives you a way to shape a character over the course of the adventure. Boss encounters provide the major tests of those choices and of your ability to manage resources under pressure. The isometric view offers a broader read of the immediate arena than first person, which can help you plan around groups of enemies, projectiles, and escape routes.
Trade-offs
Morbid costs more at the captured regular listing price than the other recommendations, and its English review snapshot is lower than the Very Positive ratings of Blade of Darkness and ELDERBORN. That does not make it a bad choice; it identifies a narrower taste. Buy it for the specific combination of Lovecraftian horror, gore, ranged weapons, and layered survival resources, not simply because it has the word Souls-like attached to its store description.

Fall of Light: Darkest Edition: story, puzzles, and a companion
Fall of Light: Darkest Edition is the most narrative- and exploration-focused game in this group. It is a story-driven dungeon crawler set in a world consumed by Darkness. Its central distinction is that progress is not only about defeating enemies: you also navigate environmental puzzles and protect the companion Aether.

Technical combat system
The Steam page highlights defense, parrying, and perfect timing. It also lists 20 battle stances and 10 weapon classes. Those numbers suggest a system built around deliberate experimentation: your stance and weapon class can change how you approach an encounter, while successful defense and parries reward patience rather than frantic attacks.
Exploration and escort pressure
Environmental puzzles give the dungeon layout a purpose beyond connecting fights. The Aether-protection objective adds a second layer of attention, because you are not treating every room as a simple one-on-one duel. Players who enjoy protecting a vulnerable companion and reading spaces for clues will find more to engage with than a pure combat loop.
What the review snapshot signals
The captured Steam listing shows Mixed English reviews at 56% of 202 reviews. Treat that as a warning to read recent player comments and confirm that its slower, story-led structure matches your expectations. It is the least obvious recommendation for someone seeking only polished boss combat, but the most relevant one for a reader who values atmosphere, puzzles, and narrative context.
Eldest Souls: pixel-art boss encounters
Eldest Souls is a pixel-art, isometric Soulslike organized around fast-paced, brutally challenging boss encounters. It is the clearest option when your ideal game is a concentrated sequence of demanding fights rather than a broad dungeon-crawling adventure.

Boss-rush mindset
Each encounter asks you to study patterns, react quickly, and refine your approach after failure. The speed distinguishes it from slower games where defensive patience dominates every exchange. The isometric perspective keeps the arena readable while preserving the pressure of positioning, timing, and attack selection.
Free additional content
Steam says the free “Depths of the Forgotten” expansion adds a region, three bosses, weapons, weapon customisation, and a new ability. That gives buyers extra content beyond the base game without changing the recommendation’s central identity: this remains a boss-focused challenge first.
Who gets the most value
Choose Eldest Souls if you measure value in memorable fights and replayable mastery rather than campaign length or extensive dialogue. Its pixel-art presentation also makes it the strongest visual match for players who want gothic menace expressed through sprites and stark, readable arenas instead of realistic 3D environments.
Comparing the five by the questions that matter
Which has the best camera for you?
- Third person: Blade of Darkness keeps your character and weapon spacing visible from behind.
- First person: ELDERBORN makes every close-range exchange feel immediate and personal.
- Isometric: Morbid, Fall of Light, and Eldest Souls provide a wider tactical view of the surrounding space.
Which game puts story first?
Fall of Light is the clearest story-led choice because its premise, dungeon progression, puzzles, and Aether-protection objective are all tied to narrative exploration. Blade of Darkness and ELDERBORN put more emphasis on combat systems. Morbid uses its horror setting to frame action-RPG progression, while Eldest Souls concentrates on bosses and mechanical mastery.
Which game is shortest or most concentrated?
ELDERBORN has the only explicit duration in the available listings: 8–10 hours for one playthrough. Eldest Souls is concentrated in a different way, through its boss-focused structure. The other listings do not state a campaign length, so do not assume that their playtime matches either of those formats.
Which game is the most demanding?
All five market some form of severe or Souls-like combat, but their pressure takes different forms. Blade of Darkness stresses hardcore melee. ELDERBORN combines brutality with first-person movement. Morbid asks you to manage health, stamina, and sanity while choosing between guns and melee. Fall of Light tests defense, parries, timing, and companion protection. Eldest Souls makes rapid boss learning the central challenge.
Buying safely during Steam sales
The list prices and discount snapshots are not permanent. Steam can show a temporary promotion that disappears before you purchase, and the amount displayed can vary by region. Use the regular prices in the comparison table as the stable reference from the captured listings, then verify the current store page for your account’s currency.

- Check whether the title is the exact edition named here, especially Fall of Light: Darkest Edition.
- Read the current review breakdown, not only the overall label, if a Mixed or Mostly Positive score is a deciding factor.
- Confirm that the store description still lists the content you care about, such as ELDERBORN’s 11 weapons or Eldest Souls’ free expansion.
- Do not treat a sale snapshot as a recurring price; the displayed $3.74 and $1.49 examples were temporary observations.
A practical decision path
- If you want the closest match to an old-school, third-person dark-fantasy action RPG, select Blade of Darkness.
- If you want first-person combat and a clearly stated 8–10 hour single-playthrough target, select ELDERBORN.
- If your priority is Lovecraftian horror with guns, perks, and sanity management, select Morbid: The Seven Acolytes.
- If puzzles, a story-driven dungeon, and protecting Aether sound more important than a pure combat gauntlet, select Fall of Light: Darkest Edition.
- If you want pixel art and fast, brutally difficult boss fights, select Eldest Souls.
