For most homes with an internet plan below 1Gbps, the TP-Link Archer AX55 is the strongest budget gaming-router pick in the available reviews: it combines Wi-Fi 6, useful range, and suitable gaming performance without requiring Wi-Fi 7. For the lowest-cost general-purpose option, consider the TP-Link Archer AX10; for a gaming-branded model with a 2.5Gbps WAN port, consider the ASUS TUF Gaming AX4200. A router marketed for gaming does not guarantee lower ping, and an Ethernet cable remains the more dependable choice for competitive play.

Best cheap gaming routers at a glance

Router Best for What stands out Key trade-off
TP-Link Archer AX55 Best budget gaming router for plans below 1Gbps Wi-Fi 6, useful range, mesh expansion support, and decent wireless latency, according to RTINGS No 6GHz band; wired Ethernet is preferable for competitive stability
TP-Link Archer AX10 Lowest-cost general-purpose choice RTINGS’ cheap-router pick; reviewed performance suited to browsing, downloads, and 4K streaming Not positioned as equal to the AX55 for gaming; lacks DFS support
ASUS TUF Gaming AX4200 Gaming-branded Wi-Fi 6 alternative 2.5Gbps WAN input, four 1Gbps Ethernet ports, and a 2.0GHz quad-core processor Wi-Fi 6 rather than the newer Wi-Fi 7 generation
TP-Link Archer BE230 Wi-Fi 7 alternative Higher peak speeds than the AX55 and a 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port, per RTINGS RTINGS says AX55 range is significantly better and its value suits most users better
GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) Wired-device flexibility and advanced configuration Four 1Gbps LAN ports, two 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN ports, and configurable OpenWRT-based software Lower-mid-range pick rather than the simplest low-cost choice

These are five distinct candidates, not a verified lowest-to-highest price ranking. The cited reviews do not establish comparable current prices or availability for one target region, so check local listings and exact model variants before buying.

Which cheap gaming router should you choose?

TP-Link Archer AX55: the best budget gaming router for many homes

RTINGS recommends the dual-band Wi-Fi 6 Archer AX55 for internet plans below 1Gbps. It reports decent wireless latency and gaming performance, useful range, and support for OneMesh and EasyMesh expansion. It does not have 6GHz Wi-Fi, so it is not the choice for someone specifically seeking that band. For most users who want a sensible upgrade rather than Wi-Fi 7 hardware, it is the strongest overall value fit in these reviews. RTINGS’ gaming-router review

TP-Link Archer AX10: the cheaper general-use pick

RTINGS names the Archer AX10 its best cheap router, with reviewed performance suitable for everyday browsing, downloads, and 4K streaming. Its review reports close-range performance of up to roughly 600Mbps, but that is a test observation, not a guaranteed speed in every home or on every internet plan. It lacks DFS support and is best treated as a low-cost general-purpose option rather than an equivalent gaming performer to the AX55. RTINGS’ budget-router review

ASUS TUF Gaming AX4200: a gaming-branded Wi-Fi 6 alternative

PC Gamer selects the TUF Gaming AX4200 as its budget gaming-router pick. The listed hardware includes a 2.5Gbps WAN input, four 1Gbps Ethernet ports, and a 2.0GHz quad-core processor. Its dedicated gaming positioning may appeal if you want those ports and features, but its Wi-Fi 6 generation is older than Wi-Fi 7. Wired throughput is limited by the speed of the connected port and the rest of the network, so a 2.5Gbps WAN input alone does not make every connection 2.5Gbps. PC Gamer’s gaming-router guide

TP-Link Archer BE230: consider it if you specifically want Wi-Fi 7

RTINGS lists the Archer BE230 as a budget Wi-Fi 7 option, noting somewhat higher peak speeds and a faster 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port than the AX55. However, the same review says the AX55 has significantly better range and remains more cost-effective for most users. Choose by your devices, home coverage, and actual internet speed—not the Wi-Fi 7 label alone.

  • Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.

GL.iNet Flint 2: the flexible pick for wired setups and tinkering

RTINGS places the Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) in the lower-mid-range category. It combines Wi-Fi 6, decent latency, consistent range, four 1Gbps LAN ports, and two 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN ports. Its configurable OpenWRT-based software and network-wide VPN support make it a distinct option for people who want more control over their network; those features are less important if all you need is a straightforward replacement router.

What matters more than a gaming label

Latency and stability

Advertised combined Wi-Fi speeds are not a measure of the ping your game will experience. Wireless latency and stability vary with distance, walls, interference, network load, and router placement. For competitive gaming, connect the PC or console to the router with Ethernet where practical; the reviewed sources specifically favor wired connectivity for steadier play.

Range and home layout

A router that performs well in a nearby test may not cover a larger or awkwardly shaped home as well. Consider where the router can be placed relative to the gaming device, and whether your intended mesh or extender system is compatible. The AX55 supports OneMesh and EasyMesh expansion, but verify compatibility with the exact devices you plan to use.

Wi-Fi generation and bands

Wi-Fi 6 is sufficient for many budget setups. Wi-Fi 7 can be relevant if your client devices support it and its features address a real need, but the BE230-versus-AX55 review comparison highlights that range and cost-effectiveness may matter more than peak speed. None of the cited notes establish 6GHz support for the recommended AX55; it is a dual-band model.

Ports and internet-plan speed

Count both the number and speed of the Ethernet ports you will actually use. The AX4200 has four 1Gbps Ethernet ports plus a 2.5Gbps WAN input; the Flint 2 offers four 1Gbps LAN ports and two 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN ports. The AX55 recommendation is specifically for plans below 1Gbps. Check the router’s port configuration against your ISP service, modem, console or PC, and any wired access points.

Check your current router before buying

A new router is not always the first fix for weak coverage or unstable play. RTINGS suggests trying different router locations and, where the router supports it, DFS channels. Moving the router to a more central, open position can improve the path to devices; DFS availability and behavior depend on the router and local wireless conditions. If a wired connection solves the problem, buying a gaming-branded router may not be necessary.

How to choose the right one

  1. Check the ISP plan and router first. Confirm your plan speed and whether the ISP-provided router already meets your needs.
  2. Decide whether Wi-Fi or Ethernet will connect the game device. Prefer Ethernet for competitive stability when a cable run is practical.
  3. Match the pick to your priority. Choose AX55 for a balanced Wi-Fi 6 option below 1Gbps, AX10 for a lower-cost general router, AX4200 for its gaming-branded feature set and 2.5Gbps WAN input, BE230 for a Wi-Fi 7-designated option, or Flint 2 for flexible wired ports and advanced configuration.
  4. Verify local price, stock, and model details. Street prices and availability vary by region and change over time; compare current listings rather than relying on an unspecified or historical price.
