The best chart generator depends on what you need to do with the result. For custom charts inside a website or product, look at D3, Chart.js, or Apache ECharts. For a chart or interactive story you can publish without coding, consider Datawrapper, Flourish, or RAWGraphs. For connected, recurring dashboards, compare Tableau Cloud, Metabase, Google Looker Studio, and Power BI.
These tools are not interchangeable: a JavaScript library is building material, a publishing tool is for creating and sharing visual content, and a BI platform connects data to ongoing analysis and reporting. The picks below are organized by that distinction, not ranked as universal winners.
How to choose a chart generator
Start with the job the chart must do, then consider the costs and constraints that follow from it. A tool that makes a polished one-off chart may not be suited to a secure, shared dashboard, and a flexible coding library requires development work that a no-code publisher does not.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Build or publish: Decide whether you need a chart embedded in an application, a standalone published visualization, or a dashboard that is refreshed and reused.
- Technical effort: Libraries require coding and ongoing maintenance. No-code publishers reduce setup effort, while BI platforms often involve data connections, permissions, and report governance.
- Data and refresh: Check whether the tool can use your sources and whether the chart is a one-time upload or needs to update as data changes.
- Sharing and privacy: Confirm whether published work is public or private, whether viewers need accounts, and what team and access controls are available.
- Output and accessibility: Verify that the export or embed format suits your destination. Consider keyboard and screen-reader access, contrast, and text alternatives; a vendor’s accessibility feature claims are not a guarantee that a particular chart is accessible.
- Total ownership cost: Count authors, viewers, hosting, connectors, infrastructure, maintenance, and any required paid tier—not just the displayed software price.
Developer libraries for custom charts
These are code-first options for people building visualizations into websites, applications, or analytical workflows. They do not provide the same ready-made publishing experience as a no-code chart service.

D3: for bespoke visualizations and interaction
D3 is a JavaScript library for developers who need control over visual form and behavior, including custom charts, maps, layouts, and interaction. Its project lists tools for selections and transitions, scales, shapes, interaction behaviors, layouts, and geographic maps. That flexibility comes with a higher implementation burden than selecting a template in a publishing tool.
The D3 landing page displayed version 7.9.0 at the time of the project information reviewed; that version number is not a release date. The project also points to Observable Plot as a higher-level API for making charts more quickly. D3 is the stronger fit when the visualization itself must be tailored; Plot may be a better starting point when a conventional chart is enough.
Chart.js: for common responsive web charts
Chart.js is an open-source, community-maintained JavaScript project suited to common charts on the web. Its homepage lists eight chart types and responsive redraw when the display is resized. It is a practical choice when those familiar forms and a comparatively straightforward integration meet the need, rather than when every visual detail must be custom-built.
The project features a decimation example using one million points. Treat that as a demonstration, not a general performance guarantee: real results depend on the data, browser, configuration, and device.
Apache ECharts: for chart variety and rendering choices
Apache ECharts is worth considering when built-in chart variety and rendering flexibility matter. The project says it offers more than 20 chart types, lets developers switch between Canvas and SVG rendering, and includes dataset transforms. It also describes generated chart descriptions and decal patterns as accessibility aids. Those are project-stated capabilities, not proof that every implementation performs well or conforms to accessibility requirements.
The ECharts homepage announced version 6.1. As with any library, check the current documentation and test the chart in its actual environment before committing to it.
No-code tools for publishing charts and stories
These options are designed to help create and publish a visualization without building a charting interface from code. Check the publication terms carefully: a free tier may make the work public or retain vendor attribution.

Datawrapper is a strong fit for quick, public-facing charts, maps, and tables. Its free plan supports interactive web publishing and PNG downloads, and displays “Created with Datawrapper” attribution. The plan information reviewed states that removing attribution and downloading PDF or SVG files are Pro features.
Datawrapper displayed Pro at $21 per user per month excluding VAT and Business at $39 per user per month excluding VAT in 2026. These are the prices shown by Datawrapper at the time reviewed, not guaranteed current rates. Confirm the currency, billing interval, applicable taxes, chart availability, and current plan terms before budgeting.
Flourish: for template-rich interactive storytelling
Flourish is aimed at interactive storytelling and presentations built from templates. Its free plan includes charts, maps, interactive content, private unpublished projects, and public publishing or embedding with attribution. That mix can work for experimentation and public work, but private drafts do not mean a free published embed is attribution-free.
Flourish’s paid tiers add capabilities such as PowerPoint embedding, exports, team collaboration, attribution-free embeds, scrollytelling, live data updates, and enterprise controls. The official page reviewed did not give one fixed price that applies to all paid tiers, so check the current terms for the features and team size you need.
Recommended Free Tools
RAWGraphs: for less-common chart forms
RAWGraphs is a candidate when a standard bar or line chart is not the right shape. An independent UK JournoHub guide describes browser-based support for less-common visuals such as alluvial diagrams, bump charts, beeswarms, treemaps, and circular dendrograms, with SVG export and local-browser processing. Those details come from the guide, not verified product terms. Before using it with sensitive data or for a production workflow, check RAWGraphs’ current documentation for its processing, privacy, licensing, and feature conditions.

- Printed on demand
- Water resistant paper
- Printed to the latest edition. Mariner to apply notice to mariners (NTM) to the nautical chart.
- Meets U. S. and international carriage requirements for commercial vessels defined in SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 19.2.1.1074
BI and dashboard platforms for recurring reporting
Business intelligence tools are better suited to connected data, shared analysis, and dashboards used repeatedly than to making a single chart for an article. Their fit depends on connectors, user roles, deployment, and administration—not only on chart options.
Tableau Cloud: for governed analytics and collaboration
Tableau Cloud is a candidate for organizations that need analytics, authoring, governance, and collaboration. Tableau’s 2026 pricing page displayed Standard starting at $15 USD per user per month and Enterprise starting at $35 USD per user per month, billed annually. These are starting prices, not a quote for a complete deployment.
Tableau says each deployment requires at least one Creator license; additional users can have Creator, Explorer, or Viewer roles. The role mix and contract shape the total. Confirm country-specific pricing, package details, and terms before comparing costs.

Metabase: for self-service exploration of database data
Metabase suits teams that want people to explore data held in their database using SQL or click-based questions and dashboards. Its Open Source plan is listed as free, with unlimited users, questions, and dashboards. “Free” refers to the software plan: a self-hosted deployment still has infrastructure, upgrades, backups, and engineering ownership to account for. Teams that do not want to run it themselves can evaluate managed deployment options separately.

Google Looker Studio: for accessible web reports
Google Looker Studio, formerly called Google Data Studio, is an option for web-based reports and dashboard collaboration. Google describes built-in and partner connectors, interactive reports, real-time collaboration, sharing, and embedding. The available overview does not establish the cost of every connector or related product tier, so verify those terms for the data sources you plan to use.
Looker Studio and Looker are distinct Google products; do not treat a report made in Looker Studio as equivalent to the separate enterprise BI platform called Looker.
Power BI: for Microsoft-centered business reporting
Power BI belongs on a shortlist for teams evaluating business reporting in a Microsoft-centered environment. The available comparison source positions it as a Microsoft-stack option alongside tools such as Tableau. Current licensing, feature entitlements, and deployment terms are not established here, so check Microsoft’s current product terms rather than relying on a third-party comparison for those details.

Which chart generator should you choose?
- You are coding a product: Choose D3 for bespoke behavior, Chart.js for common responsive chart types, or ECharts for built-in variety and rendering options.
- You need a chart published quickly: Start with Datawrapper when a chart, map, or table is the main deliverable. Choose Flourish when a template-led interactive story or presentation is central.
- You need an unusual visual: Explore RAWGraphs, then verify its current processing and licensing terms against your use case.
- You need recurring team dashboards: Compare Tableau Cloud, Metabase, Looker Studio, and Power BI based on your data sources, administration model, user roles, privacy needs, and total cost.
- You monitor operational time series: Grafana may be a better candidate than a general-purpose BI system, but this guide does not establish its current cloud pricing, retention limits, or free-tier terms; check Grafana’s official product information before deciding.
For any finalist, build a small example with representative data, test the sharing and export path, and confirm that the people who will maintain and view it can use it under the required access controls. The right choice is the one that fits the workflow—not the tool with the longest feature list.
