AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are the strongest general-purpose replacements for CentOS on a VPS. Both target RHEL compatibility, have long maintenance horizons, and are available as standard server images from many VPS providers. Oracle Linux is a credible third option, while CentOS Stream is a different development track rather than a drop-in replacement for CentOS Linux.
The short answer
Choose AlmaLinux when you want a community-governed RHEL-compatible system and a documented in-place migration route from CentOS 7. Choose Rocky Linux when your priority is a project whose stated goal is close, bug-for-bug compatibility with RHEL. Choose Oracle Linux if your organization already uses Oracle support or tooling. Use CentOS Stream only when you deliberately want a continuously updated preview of what is moving toward the next RHEL minor release.
For most new VPS deployments, install AlmaLinux 9 or Rocky Linux 9 rather than trying to preserve an old CentOS installation. If you must keep the existing server and application stack, test an in-place conversion on a cloned VPS first; a failed operating-system conversion can leave the instance unable to boot or services unable to start.
What happened to CentOS?
CentOS Linux 7 is already end of life. It no longer receives normal security fixes or bug fixes from the CentOS project, so leaving an internet-facing VPS on it creates an unplanned vulnerability and compliance risk. Commercial vendors may offer extended support for organizations that need more time, but that is a temporary exception rather than a migration strategy.

CentOS Stream should not be treated as the successor to CentOS Linux. Stream is a rolling preview positioned ahead of RHEL: packages can arrive there before they are incorporated into a future RHEL minor release. That makes it useful for testing and for users who explicitly want that cadence, but it is not a binary-identical replacement for the traditional, downstream CentOS Linux workflow.
Lifecycle dates you should use when planning a VPS
“Active support” generally means normal bug fixes, security fixes and enabled hardware or software maintenance. A later “security support” or “end of life” date can provide security maintenance after the active phase, but the exact contents depend on the project. Confirm the current policy and release notes before making a contractual or regulatory commitment.

A comparison cited by Linux-focused coverage characterizes AlmaLinux as focusing on ABI compatibility while Rocky Linux emphasizes strict bug-for-bug compatibility. Treat that as a useful distinction, not a promise that every package, kernel module or proprietary installer will behave differently. Check the distribution’s own compatibility statements and your software vendor’s certification list for workloads that matter.
AlmaLinux: the most straightforward general replacement
Why administrators choose it
AlmaLinux is designed to be RHEL-binary-compatible and is governed through a community foundation rather than being tied to a single VPS provider. That combination makes it a practical target for conventional LAMP, LEPP, mail, DNS, container and database servers. Its 9 and 10 lifecycle figures also line up with Rocky Linux’s corresponding major releases, so the choice is usually about governance, tooling and operational preference rather than a shorter support window.

When AlmaLinux is especially suitable
- You need a familiar Enterprise Linux userland for packages, security policies and administration practices.
- You are moving an existing CentOS 7 VPS without changing every application at the same time.
- You want a community project with a documented migration utility and no requirement to adopt a vendor-specific support stack.
Important limitation
RHEL compatibility does not remove the need for testing. Third-party kernel modules, commercial agents, control panels and software that checks an exact operating-system string can still require a vendor-specific update or reinstall.
Rocky Linux: a close RHEL-compatible alternative
Why administrators choose it
Rocky Linux was created as a community RHEL-compatible project with an explicit emphasis on reproducing RHEL behavior closely. It is a strong choice for a new VPS when your team already knows the Enterprise Linux toolchain and wants a conventional, stable server distribution rather than a rolling branch.
When Rocky Linux is especially suitable
- Your compliance or operations documents already use RHEL-compatible package and configuration assumptions.
- You prefer a clean reinstall and can rebuild the VPS from infrastructure-as-code, configuration management or documented runbooks.
- Your provider publishes a supported Rocky image and your control panel, backup agent and monitoring stack certify that release.
Control-panel caveat
One report says cPanel stopped supporting Rocky Linux from version 134 onward, but that claim was not independently confirmed. Because control-panel support can change independently of the operating system, consult cPanel’s current compatibility matrix and your provider before committing a production account server to Rocky Linux.
Oracle Linux and smaller contenders
Oracle Linux
Oracle Linux is a legitimate Enterprise Linux replacement and can be the sensible answer for an organization already using Oracle support contracts, repositories or management tooling. For an independent VPS, compare the operational benefit of that ecosystem with the simpler community governance of AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux. Confirm which kernel stream, repositories and support terms your applications require before changing distributions.
VzLinux
VzLinux appears in replacement shortlists and may be available as a provider image. Its practical suitability depends heavily on your VPS host’s image maintenance, documentation and support. Treat it as a provider-specific option: verify update cadence, backup integration, panel compatibility and recovery procedures before putting a critical workload on it.

Why not automatically choose CentOS Stream?
Stream can be an excellent engineering platform when you want early visibility into the next RHEL minor-release content. It is a poor default for a CentOS Linux 7 replacement when the requirement is a predictable, downstream-compatible production base. The package flow, testing assumptions and lifecycle dates are different, so choose it intentionally rather than because the name still contains “CentOS.”
Decide between an in-place migration and a clean rebuild
Use an in-place path when
- The VPS contains stateful services that are difficult to recreate and you have verified backups.
- The provider cannot preserve the existing IP address or attached volumes during a rebuild.
- Your application stack is known to work on the target major release and downtime must be minimized.
- You can test the conversion on a snapshot or cloned instance first.
Prefer a clean reinstall when
- The server has years of accumulated manual changes, obsolete repositories or unknown packages.
- You are moving from CentOS 7 to a current major release with application changes anyway.
- You can recreate the service from configuration management, deployment scripts and verified data backups.
- The provider offers a supported AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux image and a reliable console for recovery.
A clean rebuild usually takes longer during preparation but leaves a more understandable system. An in-place conversion preserves more of the existing environment while also preserving its hidden configuration mistakes. The right choice is determined by recoverability and testing, not by the shortest maintenance window on paper.
Migration checklist for a CentOS VPS
1. Inventory the current server
Record the operating-system release, enabled repositories, kernel, storage layout, boot mode, network configuration, firewall rules, SELinux mode, scheduled jobs, listening ports and every production service. Basic checks include:

systemctl --type=service --state=runningAlso export application configuration and list packages installed outside the standard repositories. A conversion can succeed while a manually installed agent, module or service remains incompatible.

2. Make recovery independent of the VPS
- Create a provider snapshot if snapshots are reliable and restorable.
- Copy databases, uploads, certificates, secrets and configuration to storage that is not attached only to the VPS.
- Test restoring at least one representative database and one complete application configuration.
- Confirm that you can reach the provider’s serial console or recovery environment if networking fails.
3. Check provider and application constraints
Ask the VPS provider which target images, kernels and boot modes it supports. Confirm whether the public IP, reverse DNS, attached volumes and cloud-init identity survive a reinstall. Separately check certification for your control panel, backup agent, monitoring system, antivirus or endpoint agent, proprietary kernel module and database version.

4. Build a disposable rehearsal
Clone the VPS or restore its snapshot to an isolated instance. Rehearse the migration there, record the elapsed time and test every externally visible function: SSH, DNS, TLS renewal, web requests, mail delivery, database connections, scheduled jobs, backups and monitoring alerts. Do not treat a successful package transaction as a successful service migration.
Moving CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux with ELevate
AlmaLinux’s ELevate tool is documented as an in-place route from CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 8 or 9 without reinstalling. A Server.HK guide describes the procedure, but vendor guides are not a substitute for a staging test; confidence in this particular path is lower than for selecting a fresh provider image.

- Snapshot and clone first. Keep the original CentOS 7 VPS untouched until the converted clone has passed application tests and you have a rollback window.
- Bring CentOS 7 to a known state. Apply the latest available updates for the installed repositories, remove abandoned third-party repositories and resolve package conflicts before invoking a conversion tool.
- Check blockers. Review unsupported packages, custom kernels, encrypted volumes, bootloader configuration, third-party agents and services that must be stopped during the transition.
- Install and run the ELevate pre-checks. Follow the current AlmaLinux procedure for the exact target major release. Stop when a pre-check reports a package, repository or configuration conflict; forcing the conversion can make rollback harder.
- Perform the conversion in the maintenance window. Keep console access available because SSH may disappear while networking, the kernel or the bootloader is changed.
- Verify the resulting release and repositories. Confirm that the system identifies as AlmaLinux, that only intended repositories are enabled, and that the running kernel is the expected one.
- Reinstall or reauthorize dependent software. Rebuild kernel modules, reinstall monitoring and backup agents, renew repository credentials and apply vendor instructions for the target release.
- Run functional tests and retain the rollback copy. Test data integrity and every production endpoint before changing DNS or deleting the original instance.
ELevate does not turn a CentOS 7 system into a pristine new server. Old configuration files, unsupported applications and accumulated security exceptions still require review after the operating-system change.

- Export the inventory and backups. Save service configuration, database dumps, user data, TLS material, firewall policy and deployment files outside the VPS.
- Provision a test VPS from the provider’s supported image. Select the target major release, match the required CPU architecture and storage layout, and retain console access.
- Patch before exposing services. Update the base system, configure time synchronization, create administrative access, enable the intended firewall policy and confirm SELinux behavior.
- Recreate services from documented configuration. Install only required packages from trusted repositories, then restore application configuration and data in dependency order.
- Validate operations. Test boot persistence, log rotation, backups, monitoring, certificate renewal, DNS, queues, scheduled jobs and restart behavior.
- Cut over deliberately. Lower DNS TTL ahead of the change when appropriate, schedule the final data sync, switch traffic, monitor error rates and keep the old VPS available until the rollback period expires.
VPS-specific pitfalls and fixes
The server boots but SSH is unavailable
Use the provider console, verify that the expected network interface and routes exist, inspect firewall and SELinux denials, and confirm that the SSH service is enabled. If the conversion changed the kernel or initramfs, boot the previous kernel from the console when the provider permits it.
Applications fail after the distribution change
Check repository availability, shared-library versions, file ownership, service ordering and environment variables. Reinstall third-party agents for the target distribution instead of copying their old binaries. Review system logs and the application’s own logs rather than repeatedly restarting the service.

DNS or TLS breaks during cutover
Verify the public IP, reverse-DNS record, authoritative nameservers, firewall ports and certificate paths. A restored configuration can point to the old hostname or interface even when the application itself is healthy.

Backups appear successful but cannot restore
Perform a real restore to an isolated VPS. Confirm that the backup includes databases, permissions, service definitions, secrets and scheduled jobs, not merely a directory of web files.
A provider offers only an unsupported image
Do not assume a community image is maintained because it boots. Ask who publishes updates, how quickly security fixes are applied, whether the image supports the provider’s kernel and console, and how to replace it if the image is withdrawn. If those answers are unclear, choose a supported image or change providers.
A practical decision framework
- New general-purpose VPS: AlmaLinux 9 or Rocky Linux 9. Choose based on team preference, provider support and application certification.
- Existing CentOS 7 server with difficult-to-recreate state: rehearse ELevate to AlmaLinux 8 or 9, but keep a tested snapshot and an independent backup.
- Infrastructure that wants the closest RHEL behavior: Rocky Linux, subject to checks for control panels and proprietary software.
- Oracle-centered organization: evaluate Oracle Linux because its support and management ecosystem may reduce operational friction.
- Development or pre-RHEL testing: CentOS Stream, provided the team accepts its rolling-preview role and separate lifecycle.
- Provider-specific image with strong support: VzLinux can be considered after verifying maintenance, recovery and application compatibility.
Bottom line
For the typical Linux VPS, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are the safest CentOS Linux replacements. Start with a new supported image whenever you can; use an in-place conversion only when preserving the existing server is worth the additional testing and rollback complexity. Treat CentOS Stream as a different operating model, and select Oracle Linux or VzLinux when a clear support or provider requirement justifies them.
