For most beginners choosing between these two Canon DSLRs, the Rebel T8i is the more capable learning camera if its price and availability work for you: Canon’s February 2020 announcement lists a 45-point all cross-type viewfinder autofocus system, shooting up to 7 frames per second, a vari-angle touchscreen, wireless connectivity and 4K UHD video. The Rebel T7 is a simpler entry into the EF/EF-S DSLR system and may make sense if you find a suitable kit at a compelling price. Neither model’s feature list guarantees that a particular new kit is currently available in your country, so check the exact body and included lens before buying.

Which Canon DSLR should a beginner choose?

Camera Best fit What the cited Canon information establishes Availability caveat
Canon EOS Rebel T8i A beginner who values viewfinder autofocus, a movable touchscreen, wireless transfer or video features alongside still photography. Canon’s February 12, 2020 announcement lists a 24 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 45-point all cross-type optical-viewfinder autofocus, up to 7.0 fps continuous shooting, 4K UHD, a vari-angle 3-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent test results. Canon’s T8i announcement. The announcement is from 2020; it is not evidence of current stock or pricing. Check Canon’s T8i support page and local sellers for the exact configuration.
Canon EOS Rebel T7 A buyer seeking a basic Canon EF/EF-S DSLR when a suitable body or kit is available at a compelling price. Canon’s support specifications list a 24.1 MP CMOS sensor and EF/EF-S lens compatibility. They also state that the camera does not support UHS speed class cards. Canon’s T7 support page. Canon marks its EF-S 18-55mm IS II kit page discontinued/no longer available, while its broader DSLR catalog lists a T7 Double Zoom kit. A listing for one kit does not establish availability of every configuration or confirm that the model itself is retired. T7 kit page; Canon’s DSLR catalog.

What matters most when you are learning photography?

For a beginner, a DSLR’s basic purpose is the same whether you choose the T7 or T8i: learn to control exposure, focus and composition while using interchangeable lenses. Choose based on the features you will actually use and the total cost of a complete, compatible setup—not on a model name or an old launch price.

  • Autofocus through the viewfinder: If you expect to photograph moving subjects, the T8i’s Canon-listed 45-point all cross-type optical-viewfinder autofocus system and up-to-7.0-fps continuous shooting provide a stronger documented action-oriented feature set. These are specifications from Canon’s 2020 announcement, not a guarantee of results in every shooting situation.
  • Screen and controls: The T8i announcement lists a vari-angle 3-inch touchscreen. A screen that pivots can help with low or high angles and video framing; decide whether that convenience justifies any price difference you encounter.
  • Video and wireless: Canon lists 4K UHD video, Full HD up to 24p, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for the T8i. If you mainly want to learn still photography, these features may matter less than price, condition and a usable lens.
  • Lens cost: Both cameras use Canon EF mount and accept EF and EF-S lenses. Compare the included lens and the cost of any additional compatible lens you may want; a low body price can be less appealing if the kit is incomplete or unsuitable.

Canon Rebel T8i: the more feature-rich option

Canon introduced the T8i on February 12, 2020, describing it as a camera for aspiring photographers progressing beyond Auto. Its announcement lists a 24 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 45-point all cross-type autofocus through the optical viewfinder with face detection, and continuous shooting up to 7.0 frames per second. Those details make it the stronger choice on paper for a learner who wants more documented support for following action.

For live-view shooting and video, Canon also lists Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Eye Detection in Servo, a vari-angle 3-inch touchscreen, 4K UHD and Full HD video up to 24p. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are listed for wireless connectivity. Treat these as launch-era features, not proof that a particular camera or kit is currently sold new. Canon’s T8i support page is the place to check support materials and technical details; verify current price and stock separately.

Canon Rebel T7: a basic route into the EF/EF-S DSLR system

Canon’s current T7 support specifications list a 24.1 MP CMOS sensor and compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses. The T7 can be a practical beginner option when a suitable kit is available at a price that makes sense, but do not assume that a discontinued kit listing means every T7 configuration is unavailable—or that another catalog listing means a particular kit is in stock.

Lens and memory-card compatibility

Check the lens mount

Canon’s support specifications list EF and EF-S compatibility for both the T7 and T8i, and exclude EF-M lenses. Confirm the exact lens version and camera mount before purchase rather than relying on a listing that says only “Canon lens.” The EF-S 18-55mm IS II was an example T7 kit lens; Canon’s T8i launch kit used an EF-S 18-55mm F4-5.6 IS STM. Those examples do not establish current kit availability. T7 specifications; T8i specifications; T8i launch announcement.

Match the card to the camera

Canon lists SD, SDHC and SDXC cards for both models, but the speed-class detail differs: the T8i supports UHS-I, while the T7 is not compatible with UHS speed class cards. Check the camera’s current specifications or manual for the card you plan to use; do not assume a card advertised for one model will have the same supported speed class on the other. How to assess availability and support

Canon’s U.S. catalog is a snapshot, not a worldwide stock guarantee or a complete view of the used market. Its DSLR category page lists five products in the referenced catalog view, including advanced/full-frame products and a T7 Double Zoom kit; category filters are not a ranking of beginner cameras. Canon’s general retired-products policy says, “Our policy is to typically retire products after 10 years of life.” Canon says assisted support ends for a retired product, although self-service resources such as troubleshooting articles, user guides and how-to videos may remain. This is a general policy; the cited policy page does not establish that either the T7 or T8i has reached retirement. Canon’s retired-products policy.

Buying a used or refurbished Canon DSLR

Because the beginner-friendly Rebel models are older products, compare condition and seller terms as carefully as specifications. Before paying, check:

  • Whether the listing is for a body only or a kit, and exactly which lens is included.
  • The seller’s condition grading, return rights and any warranty terms that apply in your country.
  • The camera body and shutter condition, and whether a battery and charger are included.
  • The lens for fungus or haze, and whether the lens mount matches the camera.
  • Whether service and support are available where you live.

Final decision

Choose the T8i if you find a suitable, fairly priced configuration and value its Canon-listed viewfinder autofocus, burst shooting, articulated touchscreen, wireless features or video capabilities. Choose the T7 if your priority is a basic EF/EF-S DSLR and the specific body or kit you can verify is compelling for its price and condition. In either case, make the decision from the current listing—not from historical launch pricing or an assumption that every kit is still available.
