For photographing satellites as they move across the sky, choose a mount and control system with an explicit satellite-tracking mode—not a portable star tracker that merely follows the sidereal motion of the stars. The documented options divide into three distinct approaches: iOptron SkyTrack for supported iOptron mounts, iOptron Ultimate Orbit Tracker for TLE-based tracking with camera guiding, and ESA’s pypogs software for closed-loop acquisition and tracking with portable telescopes. A wide-field camera mount such as the iOptron SkyTracker Pro is designed for ordinary astrophotography and should not be treated as a satellite tracker.

What satellite tracking means in an imaging setup

Satellite tracking for photography is the process of keeping a telescope and camera pointed at an artificial object that is moving rapidly relative to the stars. The mount must continually change where it is aimed, while the imaging system must expose and read out frames quickly enough to keep the target in the field.

That is different from a portable camera star tracker. A star tracker follows the celestial sphere at the sidereal rate, allowing a fixed camera to make longer exposures of stars and Milky Way scenes. It does not, by that fact alone, calculate a satellite’s orbit or follow a satellite’s changing position. The distinction is important because a product can be excellent for wide-field night-sky photography yet have no documented satellite-imaging function.

The documented options at a glance

System Documented tracking method Camera roles Hardware and setup notes Best fit
iOptron SkyTrack Satellite-tracking control for specified iOptron mounts; the cited instructions require the mount’s Continuous Tracking setting. The documentation cited here concerns mount control rather than a universal camera package. Current mount firmware, a computer connected through RS232, and Commander control are required. In SkyTrack satellite mode, the hand controller is disconnected. Owners of a supported iOptron mount who want a manufacturer-documented satellite mode.
iOptron Ultimate Orbit Tracker TLE-based orbit tracking, with optional camera-feedback guiding. Main camera and guiding camera; the guide describes camera guiding and automatic exposure control. HAZ mounts and HAE mounts in AA mode are documented in the cited material. Exact model and firmware support must be checked against the current manual. Imaging systems that need orbital prediction plus a separate guide-camera loop.
ESA pypogs Closed-loop camera feedback for automatic satellite acquisition and tracking. Uses optical feedback from cameras; the project description does not establish the same camera or mount package as the iOptron systems. Designed as a separate optical-ground-station software route that can work with portable telescopes. Experimenters building or adapting a portable, camera-feedback tracking station.

The cited material does not provide a head-to-head accuracy benchmark among these systems. Compatibility and operating method are documented; comparative pointing performance is not.

Choose the mount and software before choosing a camera

A camera cannot compensate for an unsupported mount protocol or an incorrect operating mode. Start by deciding which control path your mount can actually use:

  • Use SkyTrack when your mount is one of the models listed by iOptron and you can provide the required computer, RS232 connection, current firmware and Continuous Tracking setting.
  • Use Ultimate Orbit Tracker when your supported HAZ or HAE mount will operate in the documented AA mode and you want TLE prediction combined with a guide camera.
  • Use pypogs when you are intentionally building a separate optical-ground-station system around closed-loop camera feedback and a portable telescope.

Do not select a camera first and assume that software will make any motorized mount follow a satellite. The mount model, firmware, communications link and supported mode determine whether the control system can issue the required motion commands.

iOptron SkyTrack: the straightforward route for supported mounts

Supported mount families

iOptron’s SkyTrack compatibility page, updated 2024-01-25, lists the AZ Mount Pro, HAZ31, HAZ46, HAE29 and HAE43 as supported mounts. That list is the useful starting point for an equipment decision: a different mount should be treated as unconfirmed until the manufacturer’s current documentation says otherwise.

The HAE29 is therefore a plausible physical foundation for a SkyTrack system, but compatibility is not a blanket guarantee for every firmware revision, accessory or operating mode. Confirm the exact model and the instructions that apply to your unit before purchase or installation.

  1. Update the mount to current firmware for the model.
  2. Connect a computer to the mount through RS232.
  3. Enable the mount’s Continuous Tracking setting.

SkyTrack control runs through Commander in satellite-tracking mode. The hand controller is disconnected while that mode is active. This is an operational constraint, not an optional convenience: leaving the hand controller in the control chain can conflict with the computer-driven session.

A practical SkyTrack setup sequence

  1. Identify the exact mount model and check it against the SkyTrack compatibility list.
  2. Install the current mount firmware specified for that model.
  3. Connect the mount to the computer using the required RS232 path and verify that Commander can communicate with it.
  4. Set the mount’s Continuous Tracking option before starting the satellite session.
  5. Move control to Commander and disconnect the hand controller for the SkyTrack satellite mode.
  6. Only then connect and configure the imaging camera, using the camera settings appropriate to your telescope, target brightness and desired frame timing.
  7. Run a stationary or daytime communications check before attempting a live pass. A successful connection test isolates cable, port and firmware problems from tracking problems.

The exact camera exposure, framing and target-selection controls are not universal camera specifications; they depend on the telescope, sensor and the software version you are using.

Ultimate Orbit Tracker: TLE prediction plus optical guiding

What it adds

The Ultimate Orbit Tracker documentation describes TLE-based satellite tracking and two camera roles. A main camera records the satellite, while a guiding camera supplies feedback for camera guiding. The guide also describes automatic exposure control. This makes the system different from a mount-only prediction mode: it combines an orbital track with information from the optical scene.

The cited compatibility material supports HAZ mounts and HAE mounts in AA mode. “AA mode” is part of the documented compatibility statement; do not assume that the same support applies when the mount is switched to another mode. The software note is dated 2025-07-06, and it should not be read as a firmware-release date.

The guide’s example optical configuration

The Ultimate Orbit Tracker guide gives one preferred example:

This is an example configuration, not a universal requirement or a claim that these cameras are the best choice for every telescope. The important design principle is the division of labor: the guide scope and guide camera provide tracking feedback, while the main telescope and main camera perform the satellite imaging.

When this architecture makes sense

Choose the Ultimate Orbit Tracker approach when your mount is documented for it, you can operate the mount in the required AA mode, and you want an imaging loop that includes a separate guide camera. It is more involved than simply attaching a camera to a tracking mount, but the additional camera role is useful when the target must be kept centered while the main camera is exposing.

Before buying components, verify the current model-specific manual. The documentation cited here establishes the functions and supported mount families, but it does not establish one universal camera, telescope focal length or accuracy figure for every setup.

ESA pypogs: a separate closed-loop software path

ESA’s pypogs project is described as software that can automatically acquire and track satellites with closed-loop camera feedback using portable telescopes. That makes it relevant to satellite imaging, but it is a separate route from the iOptron software stack.

The available description does not establish that pypogs is interchangeable with SkyTrack, Commander or Ultimate Orbit Tracker, nor does it document the same mount list or the example iOptron camera configuration. Treat it as a system-building option: you must confirm the telescope, camera, mount interface and control protocol that your implementation will use.

pypogs is most attractive when portability and camera-feedback acquisition are central requirements, or when you are prepared to assemble and validate an optical-ground-station workflow rather than purchase a single, manufacturer-defined package.

Main camera versus guide camera

Satellite imaging systems often separate recording from control:

  • Main camera: records the final images or video of the satellite through the primary telescope.
  • Guide camera: watches a wider or separate guide field and supplies positional feedback to the tracking loop.

The Ultimate Orbit Tracker guide explicitly documents both roles, including camera guiding and automatic exposure control. SkyTrack’s cited material focuses on mount control and does not define a universal main-camera or guide-camera package. Do not infer that every SkyTrack-compatible mount requires the same two-camera arrangement as Ultimate Orbit Tracker.

The example iCAM462 and PlayerOne Apollo Mini pairing should therefore be read as a documented starting configuration for the Ultimate Orbit Tracker guide, not as a ranking of all satellite cameras.

Why a portable star tracker is not a satellite tracker

iOptron’s SkyTracker Pro is described as a camera mount for wide-field astrophotography. Its listed rates are sidereal, half speed, solar and lunar, and its stated camera payload is up to 3 kg. Those specifications describe tracking of the sky’s apparent rotation and ordinary wide-field imaging.

The cited documentation does not establish satellite tracking for the SkyTracker Pro. It should therefore not be used as a substitute for a satellite-specific mount and software system. A camera can capture a bright satellite in a wide field while it crosses the frame, but that is not the same as automatically tracking the object for a centered, guided exposure sequence.

Decision guide by project type

Your situation Most defensible starting point Why
You already own an AZ Mount Pro, HAZ31, HAZ46, HAE29 or HAE43. Check SkyTrack first. Those models are listed as supported in the 2024-01-25 compatibility update, subject to firmware and connection requirements.
You want TLE prediction and a separate optical feedback loop. Evaluate Ultimate Orbit Tracker. Its guide documents TLE tracking, main and guiding cameras, camera guiding and automatic exposure control.
You are building a portable optical-ground-station experiment. Evaluate ESA pypogs. Its project description covers automatic acquisition and tracking with closed-loop camera feedback and portable telescopes.
You need a simple wide-field star-field camera tracker. Use a documented star tracker such as SkyTracker Pro for that limited purpose. Its published rates and payload concern wide-field astrophotography, not documented satellite tracking.

Pre-purchase and pre-session checklist

  • Confirm the exact mount model, not merely the brand family.
  • Confirm the software’s supported operating mode; Ultimate Orbit Tracker’s cited support is for HAZ and HAE mounts in AA mode.
  • Check firmware requirements and update procedures before the first night.
  • Ensure the computer has the required RS232 connection path for SkyTrack.
  • Plan for Commander control and hand-controller disconnection in SkyTrack satellite mode.
  • Decide whether your design needs only mount control or a main-camera/guide-camera loop.
  • If following the Ultimate Orbit Tracker example, provide the 120 mm, 30 mm-diameter, f/4 guide scope, iCAM462 guide camera, PlayerOne Apollo Mini main camera, main telescope and mounting accessories.
  • For pypogs, validate the complete telescope, camera and mount interface as a separate system; do not assume iOptron compatibility.
  • Test communications and camera recognition before attempting a moving target.

Troubleshooting common failures

The software cannot control the mount

Recheck the physical RS232 path, the selected computer port and the mount firmware. For SkyTrack, also verify that Commander—not the hand controller—is the active control path.

The mount connects but does not follow the pass

Confirm that Continuous Tracking is enabled for SkyTrack. If you are using Ultimate Orbit Tracker, verify the mount’s AA mode and that the exact model is covered by the current manual.

The guide camera works but the main image is unusable

Separate the two roles during diagnosis. Confirm that the guide camera is supplying feedback and that the main camera is connected to the imaging path described by the software. The documented example is a role assignment, not a guarantee that any camera will work without model-specific configuration.

You expected a star tracker to follow a satellite

Check the published tracking rates. Sidereal, solar and lunar rates indicate ordinary sky-motion tracking; they do not, by themselves, document satellite orbit following. Move to a system with an explicit satellite mode, TLE support or closed-loop camera feedback.

Bottom line

For a supported iOptron mount, SkyTrack is the clearest documented entry point: use current firmware, an RS232-connected computer, Continuous Tracking and Commander, with the hand controller disconnected in satellite mode. For a more instrumented setup, Ultimate Orbit Tracker adds TLE-based tracking, a guide camera, camera guiding and automatic exposure control, with HAZ and HAE support documented in AA mode. ESA’s pypogs is a separate portable, closed-loop approach. A sidereal camera tracker remains a different class of tool and should not be presented as an automatic satellite-imaging solution.
