There is no phone proven to apply the least processing to every automatic photo. A phone’s normal JPEG or HEIF is already a rendered, computational image. If you want a more natural result, choose a phone that lets you reduce automatic decisions, capture RAW, or both—and judge unedited files from the exact model and software version. The best fit depends on whether you dislike sharpening, skin smoothing, HDR shadow lifting, noise reduction, or generative editing.

What “without heavy AI processing” actually means

“AI processing” is used for several different operations. A phone may combine multiple exposures for HDR, brighten faces, smooth skin, sharpen edges, remove noise, recognize scenes, or generate replacement pixels in an editing tool. Those are not the same problem, and a setting that disables one may leave the others active.

  • Sharpening: adds edge contrast. It can make foliage, hair and text look crisp, but halos around high-contrast edges are a common giveaway.
  • Noise reduction: suppresses grain in dim scenes. Strong reduction can erase skin texture, hair and fine fabric detail.
  • HDR and tone mapping: merge exposures or lift shadows to preserve a wider brightness range. The result may look flatter or brighter than the scene appeared.
  • Scene and face rendering: changes color, contrast, saturation or skin tones after recognizing a subject.
  • Generative editing: removes or adds objects and reconstructs areas. This is separate from the capture pipeline.

Most buyers asking for a “natural camera” mean less sharpening, less smoothing and less aggressive HDR—not literally zero computation. A phone must still demosaic its sensor data, correct lenses and produce a viewable file.

Start by naming the effect you dislike

Before comparing phones, describe the failure you see in your current photos. If faces look waxy, inspect noise reduction and beauty controls. If branches or text have bright outlines, look for sharpening. If indoor scenes look unnaturally bright, compare HDR and tone mapping. If colors change between two frames, test automatic white balance and scene recognition. If unwanted objects disappear, check editing tools rather than capture settings.

This distinction prevents a common buying mistake: selecting a phone advertised as having “less AI” when the actual complaint is one narrow effect. A camera can use extensive computational merging yet preserve texture, while another can use a simpler exposure but apply conspicuous sharpening. Judge the finished file, not the marketing label.

The key distinction: automatic files, manual capture and RAW

Default JPEG or HEIF

The standard Camera-app photo is a finished rendering. The phone selects shutter speed, ISO, focus, white balance and HDR behavior, then applies color and detail processing before saving it. Turning off a scene optimizer may change the look, but it does not turn the file into sensor data.

Automatic modes are usually the quickest and most consistent way to share photos. They also make the most decisions for you. A phone may capture several frames, align them, select portions from each and then apply a tone curve before you ever see the result. Even when no generative tool is involved, that is computational photography.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual controls

Manual exposure, focus and white-balance controls let you replace some automatic decisions. They can prevent a phone from choosing a very high ISO, over-brightening shadows or shifting color between frames. Manual mode still may produce a processed JPEG; control over capture is not proof of a minimally processed rendering.

Manual control also introduces responsibility. A shutter speed that is too slow creates blur, while one that is too fast forces a higher ISO or a darker frame. Manual focus can miss a moving subject. A locked white balance keeps a sequence consistent but may be wrong if the lighting changes. The benefit is predictability, not a guarantee of a film-like appearance.

RAW capture

RAW retains more sensor information for editing, but “RAW” is not a promise that all processing disappears. Demosaicing, lens corrections, noise handling and camera-specific metadata may remain. Apple explicitly describes ProRAW as standard RAW information combined with iPhone image processing. RAW also requires an editor, more storage and time.

Think of RAW as an editable starting point rather than untouched evidence of the scene. You still decide exposure, white balance, contrast, color, sharpening and noise reduction. Some phone RAW modes also incorporate multi-frame or HDR decisions. Keep the accompanying JPEG when you need an immediate share, and confirm that your preferred editing application opens the phone’s particular RAW format.

Best options by the kind of control you want

Phone or workflow What the documentation establishes Important limitation Best fit
Eligible Sony Xperia with Photo Pro Photo Pro includes AUTO, program auto (P), shutter-priority (S), manual exposure (M) and, on relevant models, memory recall (MR). Applicable devices support DNG RAW. Sony’s help pages are model- and software-specific. They do not compare Xperia JPEG rendering directly with Apple or Samsung. Photographers who want hands-on exposure and focus control and are willing to verify the exact model.
Samsung Galaxy with Expert RAW Samsung’s listed support includes the S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra. Expert RAW saves a JPEG plus a linear 16-bit DNG and exposes ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure and focus controls. Samsung describes this as an HDR RAW workflow; it does not establish that everyday Camera-app JPEGs are lightly processed. Users who want a broad flagship system and editable files, with an expectation of post-processing.
Supported iPhone Pro with ProRAW Apple documents RAW capture with editing latitude for exposure, color and white balance. ProRAW incorporates iPhone image processing and is unavailable in Portrait mode. People who prefer the iPhone system but want more latitude than a finished HEIF.

These are control-oriented choices, not a ranking of the “least AI” phone. No controlled, directly comparable test establishes such a winner across current models.

What current comparisons can—and cannot—tell you

A Tom’s Guide comparison published October 10, 2026, describes a 200-photo comparison between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra. Such a shootout can show how two complete camera systems render the same scenes, but it does not isolate which processing step caused a difference or prove that one phone is the least processed in every situation. Camera phones rely on computational techniques, so a result from one scene, lens or software build should not be treated as a universal ranking.

Use published samples as a shortlist, then repeat the test yourself. Check whether the samples came from the same lens, whether night or portrait modes were active, and whether the files were resized or recompressed. A phone’s update can change sharpening or tone mapping without changing the sensor, so the date and software version matter as much as the model name.

Sony Xperia: the most direct camera-style controls

Sony’s Photo Pro interface is the clearest match for someone who wants a phone to behave more like a conventional camera. On supported Xperia models you can select AUTO, P, S or M, and some models offer MR memory-recall modes. In manual operation, set shutter speed and ISO deliberately, choose a focus method and lock white balance when you need consistent color across a sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use the workflow

  1. Open Photo Pro and select M for manual exposure, S when shutter speed is the priority, or P when you want program exposure with some override.
  2. Set a shutter speed fast enough for your subject. Raising it freezes motion but may require more ISO and therefore more noise.
  3. Set ISO as low as the available light allows. A lower ISO generally preserves cleaner tonal detail, but an underexposed frame can be harder to recover than a correctly exposed higher-ISO frame.
  4. Choose focus deliberately for close subjects, moving people or scenes where autofocus may jump.
  5. Save DNG when you intend to edit, then make a separate JPEG/HEIF frame if you need a ready-to-share result.
  6. Review a test frame at full size. Confirm that highlights are not clipped and that the chosen shutter speed has not introduced blur before photographing an important event.

Sony’s support documentation says Xperia RAW files use DNG rather than the ARW files used by Sony Alpha or Cyber-shot cameras. That distinction matters when selecting an editor or organizing files. Confirm RAW availability for the exact Xperia model and software build; the help pages do not make one universal claim for every Xperia generation. Sony’s relevant support pages were last modified January 20, 2026, so check for later device-specific notes.

Who should not choose Xperia for this reason alone

If you never adjust exposure or edit files, the extra controls may add complexity without changing your results. Photo Pro’s documented modes establish what you can control, not that an automatic Xperia JPEG is objectively more natural than an iPhone or Galaxy file. Compare default samples before paying for a phone primarily because it has a pro-style interface.

Samsung Galaxy Expert RAW: editable files with explicit parameters

Samsung’s Expert RAW app is designed for users who want more than the default Galaxy camera pipeline. Samsung’s support page lists the S26 series—including S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra—among supported models and describes output as a JPEG together with a linear 16-bit DNG. The app provides ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure and focus controls.

What the JPEG-plus-DNG output means

The JPEG is a processed, shareable preview. The linear 16-bit DNG contains substantially more data for an editor, but Samsung describes Expert RAW as an HDR RAW workflow. It should therefore be treated as an editable computational capture, not as untouched sensor output. Check the app’s current compatibility list before buying because support can change with model and software updates. Samsung’s support page states a latest update date of August 18, 2026.

When Expert RAW is worthwhile

  • Use it for high-contrast scenes where you want to decide how much shadow lifting and highlight recovery appears in the final image.
  • Use manual focus for stationary subjects, product shots or night scenes where autofocus hunts.
  • Use a fixed white balance when a series must match; automatic white balance can vary from frame to frame.
  • Expect to edit. The extra information is useful only if your software can open the DNG and you are prepared to adjust exposure, color and noise.
  • Keep the JPEG and DNG together until the edit is finished. The JPEG is convenient for sharing, while the DNG preserves more latitude for a deliberate version.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a defensible choice when you want a wide flagship camera system plus this manual/RAW workflow. It is not an established winner for restrained default processing. If your priority is a ready-to-share photo with no editing, compare the ordinary Camera app output instead of assuming Expert RAW changes it.

iPhone ProRAW: more latitude, not an unprocessed file

Apple’s ProRAW is available on supported Pro iPhones through the Camera settings and combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing. Apple documents the ability to edit exposure, color and white balance with more latitude than a finished image. It is unavailable in Portrait mode, so a portrait workflow that depends on depth blur cannot simply be switched to ProRAW.

Choose ProRAW when you like the iPhone’s camera system but want to make the final decisions in an editor. Do not choose it on the assumption that computational processing has disappeared: Apple’s own description says processing remains in the format. Apple’s support guide was current when accessed October 13, 2026; menu names and supported models should still be checked on the phone you plan to buy.

ProRAW also changes the practical cost of shooting. Files consume more storage and take longer to transfer than ordinary HEIF images, and the benefit is small if you immediately export a heavily compressed social-media copy. Use it selectively for scenes where highlight recovery, color correction or white-balance control matters.

How to evaluate a phone’s rendering before you buy

Marketing labels such as “AI camera,” “natural color” or “pro mode” are not comparable measurements. Test the exact phone, camera app version and firmware if possible. A software update can alter tone mapping or sharpening without changing the hardware.

Use repeatable scenes

  1. Photograph a person in soft daylight and inspect pores, hair and fine fabric for smoothing or waxy detail.
  2. Photograph foliage, brick or printed text and look for sharpening halos and smeared texture.
  3. Include a bright window or reflective object to see whether HDR preserves highlights or lifts every shadow.
  4. Take a moving subject to reveal motion-blending artifacts and shutter-speed choices.
  5. Repeat the same scenes at dusk or indoors to judge noise reduction and color shifts.
  6. Use every lens you expect to rely on. A phone may render its main camera naturally while applying much stronger processing to its ultrawide or telephoto camera.
  7. Photograph a neutral gray or white subject under indoor lighting to expose color casts and frame-to-frame white-balance changes.
  8. Repeat one scene with automatic mode, the phone’s pro mode and its RAW option. This separates a rendering preference from a capture-control preference.

Compare files, not only the screen preview

Transfer the original JPEG/HEIF and, where available, the DNG. View them at 100% on a calibrated or at least consistent display. Record whether each frame used automatic or manual exposure, HDR, night mode, flash and a particular lens. Compare skin texture, edge detail, shadow brightness, highlight retention, noise, motion handling and color consistency. A social-media preview or messaging-app copy may be recompressed and cannot reveal the phone’s original rendering.

Keep a simple test log with the model, operating-system build, camera-app version, lens, mode and lighting. If a phone receives an update, repeat two or three reference scenes. This is more reliable than relying on an older review whose files came from different software.

Settings that can reduce unwanted effects

  • Disable scene optimizers, beauty filters and face-retouching controls when the camera app exposes them.
  • Turn off automatic night or portrait modes when they create the look you dislike, but expect darker or noisier results.
  • Use a lower ISO or faster shutter manually when the automatic camera is lifting shadows or blurring movement.
  • Lock white balance for a consistent series under artificial light.
  • Capture RAW only when you can store and edit it; otherwise the file adds cost in storage and workflow without changing the image you share.
  • Check whether HDR is controlled globally, per scene or automatically. A disabled toggle may not affect every lens or special mode.
  • Turn off beauty or face-retouching separately from scene optimization; they are often independent controls.

Names and locations vary by model. Look under the Camera app’s settings for scene optimization, intelligent optimization, beauty, HDR, night and RAW options, then verify the result with a saved file rather than trusting the toggle label. Photograph the same subject before and after each change so you know which control actually altered the image.

Trade-offs of pursuing a “natural” look

Less processing can expose technical limits

Reduced noise reduction may leave visible grain. Less HDR can clip bright skies or lose shadow detail. Lower sharpening can make a small image look soft at normal viewing size. Manual settings can produce underexposure, focus errors or motion blur. A natural-looking frame is not automatically a technically better frame; it is a different rendering choice.

There is also a subject trade-off. A moving child, pet or athlete may benefit from the phone’s multi-frame selection even if a static landscape looks more pleasing with restrained processing. Decide whether consistency, texture, highlight protection or motion freezing matters most for the photos you actually take.

RAW adds a workflow

RAW files are larger than finished images, take longer to transfer and need compatible software. You must decide exposure, white balance, color, sharpening and noise reduction yourself. Keep the JPEG alongside the RAW when you want a quick share and an editable original. Storage and editing software are real costs, even when the phone’s camera app does not charge extra for RAW.

Lens consistency matters

A phone with a restrained main-camera rendering may still apply aggressive processing on other lenses or in low light. Evaluate the focal lengths you actually use rather than selecting a phone from one impressive sample. Check transitions between lenses in the same scene, especially at night, where the phone may crop, merge or substitute a different camera.

Questions to ask before spending money

  1. Do I want less processing in automatic photos or more control over the final file? The first requires comparing default JPEG/HEIF samples; the second points toward manual modes or RAW.
  2. Will I edit? If not, RAW adds storage and effort without changing the file you share.
  3. Which lenses matter? Test the main, ultrawide and telephoto cameras you will actually use.
  4. Can the exact model run the advertised mode? Sony Photo Pro, Samsung Expert RAW and Apple ProRAW have model- or mode-specific limits.
  5. Can my software open the file? Xperia uses DNG rather than Sony’s ARW format, while Samsung’s Expert RAW output is a linear 16-bit DNG plus JPEG.
  6. Am I judging an original file? Messaging and social platforms can resize or recompress images, hiding the camera’s original choices.

Which choice is right for you?

  • Choose Xperia Photo Pro if direct shutter, ISO, focus and white-balance control is your priority and you are comfortable checking model-specific DNG support.
  • Choose Galaxy Expert RAW if you want explicit manual parameters, a JPEG-plus-16-bit-DNG workflow and access to a current flagship system, while accepting that the DNG is an HDR computational capture.
  • Choose a supported iPhone Pro with ProRAW if you value the iPhone ecosystem and editing latitude more than a claim of minimal processing.
  • Choose none of these workflows if you never edit and simply want a ready-to-share image. In that case, compare default JPEG/HEIF samples directly and select the rendering you prefer; RAW and manual controls will not help unless you use them.

Bottom line

The most honest answer to “What is the best camera phone without heavy AI processing?” is that no current phone has been proven the least processed in a common test. For maximum control, start with a supported Xperia Photo Pro model or a Galaxy with Expert RAW; for Apple users, ProRAW provides editing room while retaining iPhone processing. Decide which effect bothers you, test the exact software version in identical scenes, and buy the rendering and workflow you can live with—not a label suggesting that computation has vanished.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a phone with completely unprocessed photos?

No. Ordinary JPEG and HEIF files require demosaicing, lens correction, tone and color processing. RAW offers a different, more editable workflow but is not a guarantee that every processing stage disappears.

Which phone is best for manual camera control?

A supported Sony Xperia with Photo Pro is the clearest fit because Sony documents AUTO, P, S, M and, on relevant models, MR modes. Verify support for the exact model and software version.

Does Samsung Expert RAW turn off AI processing?

No. Samsung documents Expert RAW as an HDR RAW workflow that saves a JPEG plus a linear 16-bit DNG. It provides manual parameters and editing latitude, but the DNG is still a computational capture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is iPhone ProRAW unprocessed?

No. Apple says ProRAW combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing. It provides more latitude for exposure, color and white-balance edits and is unavailable in Portrait mode.

What should I test when looking for natural-looking photos?

Use the same people, foliage, text, bright windows, moving subjects and dim scenes on each phone. Inspect skin texture, sharpening halos, shadow lifting, highlight retention, noise, motion artifacts and color consistency in the original files.

Will turning off HDR or a scene optimizer remove all processing?

No. Those controls affect particular parts of the pipeline. Sharpening, noise reduction, face retouching, lens correction and other processing may remain, so confirm changes by comparing saved files.

Are Xperia RAW files the same as Sony camera RAW files?

No. Sony’s support documentation says Xperia phones use DNG, while Sony Alpha and Cyber-shot cameras use ARW. Check editor compatibility and exact device support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a phone with less processing always better?

Not necessarily. Less noise reduction can show grain, less HDR can lose highlight or shadow detail, and lower sharpening can look soft. Choose the rendering and workflow that suit your subjects and willingness to edit.

The Bottom Line

No phone is proven to be the least processed in every automatic photo. Compare original files from the exact software version, and choose between restrained default rendering, Xperia-style manual control, Galaxy Expert RAW, or iPhone ProRAW according to how much capture and editing work you want.
