Best overall: the Google Pixel 9a is the safest photography buy under a strict US$400 ceiling when a current promotion places the unlocked phone around $379–$399. Its 48 MP wide and 13 MP ultrawide cameras, dependable HDR processing and simple point-and-shoot results matter more than having a long camera list.

Choose the Nothing Phone (3a) instead if a genuine telephoto perspective, a 6.77-inch display and distinctive hardware are more important to you than the most consistent automatic processing. Consider the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G only when an unlocked sale brings it below $400; its normal US pricing is often above this guide’s limit.

Prices and availability change by country, storage tier and carrier. The price references below are dated ; confirm the exact unlocked model and final checkout price before buying.

How to apply a strict $400 limit

Use the price of the exact unlocked configuration you can buy, not a manufacturer’s launch price, a carrier bill-credit total or a refurbished listing. A phone qualifies for this guide only when the amount due for an unlocked unit is no more than $400 before tax. A $399.99 price meets the ceiling; $400.01 does not.

  1. Choose the market first. The recommendations are framed for US-style pricing. Model names, radio bands, warranties and storage bundles can differ elsewhere.
  2. Identify the storage tier. A “from” price may apply only to a smaller configuration. Record the capacity and whether the seller is offering a new, unlocked phone.
  3. Check the date and promotion terms. The Pixel 9a’s $379–$399 figure is a 2026 discount range, not a permanent price. Nothing Phone (3a) pricing reported as starting at $379 does not prove that every storage tier is available at that amount.
  4. Separate carrier incentives. A trade-in, activation rebate or monthly bill credit can make the advertised number look below $400 while leaving the full retail price higher. Decide whether that condition suits you before comparing cameras.
  5. Confirm compatibility. Check that the model is unlocked for your carrier and that the seller’s return and warranty terms apply to your region.

Google Pixel 9a: the best all-around camera choice

What you get

Google lists a 48 MP wide rear camera and a 13 MP ultrawide rear camera on the Pixel 9a, plus a 6.3-inch display. The design is deliberately simple: two useful focal lengths rather than a collection of low-value sensors. There is no dedicated telephoto camera in the documented rear setup.

Price reference, checked 16 October 2026: approximately $379–$399 unlocked during 2026 discounting, compared with a $499 reference price reported by Sifter Deals. Treat that range as promotion-dependent and verify the exact listing before purchase.

Why it wins for most photographers

Independent coverage from Android Authority describes the Pixel 9a’s point-and-shoot consistency and software tools as easy to recommend at a tighter budget. That assessment matches the phone’s strongest use case: take the phone out, press the shutter and get a balanced image without spending time choosing a mode.

  • Daylight scenes: the wide camera is the dependable default for people, travel, pets and everyday detail. Google’s processing is the reason to buy this phone, not the headline megapixel count alone.
  • High-contrast scenes: computational HDR helps retain a usable balance between bright skies and darker foregrounds in the kinds of scenes where a quick automatic exposure can otherwise fail.
  • Portraits: the Pixel’s processing and subject separation tools make it a strong choice for people who want natural-looking portraits without manual editing.
  • Moving subjects: consistency is valuable when children, pets or street subjects do not hold still. The Pixel is the safer choice when you cannot repeat the shot, although no small phone can guarantee a sharp result for every fast movement or dim scene.
  • Ultrawide work: the 13 MP ultrawide provides a wider viewpoint for architecture, interiors and group scenes. Expect it to be most useful in good light; a wider lens is not automatically equal to the main camera in detail or night performance.

Trade-offs

The Pixel 9a cannot provide a true optical telephoto perspective because the documented rear system has wide and ultrawide cameras only. Distant subjects are therefore framed with a crop or digital zoom, which gives less detail than a dedicated telephoto camera at the same distance. If photographing stage performers, wildlife or distant sports is a priority, the Nothing Phone (3a) deserves closer attention.

The under-$400 recommendation also depends on the live promotion and your region. If the unlocked price rises above the ceiling, it is no longer a strict match for this list even though the camera experience remains attractive.

Nothing Phone (3a): choose it for telephoto flexibility

What the camera system adds

Nothing’s official material describes a TrueLens Engine that combines hardware, computational algorithms, AI processing and multi-frame technology. Its regional specifications list a 50 MP main camera, optical image stabilisation, pixel binning and a stated 0.6x–30x zoom range. The practical distinction is the extra telephoto perspective: you can frame a subject at moderate distance without relying solely on a crop from the main camera.

Price reference, checked 16 October 2026: Tom’s Guide reports the Phone (3a) family starting at $379. Confirm the exact unlocked storage tier, seller and market because a family starting price does not establish the price of every configuration.

Where it is the better photographic tool

  • Portrait perspective: a longer viewpoint can produce more flattering framing than standing very close with a wide lens. It is useful for head-and-shoulder portraits and details where you want the background to occupy less of the frame.
  • Moderate-distance subjects: signs, pets, food on another table and architectural details are easier to compose when a telephoto option is available.
  • Large-screen review: the 6.77-inch display gives you more room to inspect framing and show images to someone else. It also makes the phone physically larger, which may matter if one-handed use is important.
  • Stabilised shooting: optical image stabilisation is listed in the official specifications. Stabilisation helps reduce hand shake, especially for still subjects, but it cannot freeze a moving person or compensate for every low-light limitation.

Where the Pixel remains safer

The Phone (3a) can be the more versatile camera, but the Pixel 9a is the more predictable automatic camera according to the independent assessment cited above. Nothing’s hardware and TrueLens approach do not guarantee that every ultrawide, night or moving-subject frame will match Google’s processing. If your priority is a high hit rate with minimal adjustment, choose the Pixel; if the ability to change perspective matters more, choose the Nothing.

The 0.6x–30x figure describes the advertised zoom range, not uniform optical quality across the entire range. Treat the lower zoom values and the dedicated telephoto perspective as the useful part of the system. At extreme magnification, detail will depend heavily on light, stability and computational processing.

Samsung Galaxy A56 5G: a sale-only recommendation

Samsung confirms 128 GB and 256 GB variants and a Best Face feature that combines the best expressions in group photos. That feature is particularly useful when several people are photographed at once and one person blinks or looks away in an otherwise good frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price rule, checked 16 October 2026: include the Galaxy A56 5G only when the exact unlocked listing is no more than $399.99. The phone is often priced above the US$400 ceiling, so buying it at its ordinary price would violate the premise of this guide.

Who should wait for the sale

  • Samsung ecosystem households: keeping the same interface and account ecosystem can outweigh small camera differences for families already using Samsung devices.
  • Group-photo shoppers: Best Face is a clearly documented advantage for combining expressions in a group frame.
  • Long-term buyers: Samsung’s cited material identifies software support as a priority for this model, but it does not establish a specific update end date. Confirm Samsung’s current support policy for the exact regional model before relying on a particular horizon.

The available information does not establish a direct comparison for the A56’s optical zoom, ultrawide performance, video stabilisation or display size. Do not assume those characteristics from the phone’s position in Samsung’s range; verify the regional specification sheet if those details determine your purchase.

Which phone should you buy?

Buy the Pixel 9a when reliability matters most

Pick the Pixel 9a if you photograph everyday life, people, pets, travel and mixed lighting and want the highest chance of a pleasing result without editing. It is also the rational choice when you rarely use zoom beyond the main camera’s practical range. The 6.3-inch size is easier to handle than the Nothing’s larger body, while the 13 MP ultrawide covers the situations where stepping backward is impossible.

Buy the Nothing Phone (3a) when perspective is your limitation

Pick the Nothing Phone (3a) when you frequently stand too far from your subject, want a telephoto look for portraits or prefer reviewing images on a 6.77-inch screen. Confirm that the specific unlocked configuration is sold in your country and that the $379 starting figure applies to the storage tier you want.

Wait for a Galaxy A56 5G sale when ecosystem features win

Choose the A56 5G only after finding a qualifying unlocked sale. It makes sense for Samsung users who value Best Face for groups, the choice of 128 GB or 256 GB and the brand’s broader device ecosystem. If the price is above $400, return to the Pixel or Nothing rather than relaxing the limit without acknowledging that you are changing the brief.

How to take better photos with any of these phones

  1. Use the main camera for the important frame. Start with the default wide camera in ordinary light. Switch to ultrawide only when the composition requires more coverage, and use the telephoto perspective on the Nothing when distance or portrait framing calls for it.
  2. Keep the lens clean. A fingerprint across a small phone lens creates haze and flare that software cannot reliably remove. Wipe with a clean microfiber cloth before an important sequence.
  3. Stabilise before blaming the camera. Brace your elbows, lean against a solid surface or use a generic smartphone tripod for static scenes. Optical stabilisation helps with hand movement, but a tripod cannot freeze a moving subject; use a faster moment, better light or a repeated frame for that problem.
  4. Expose for faces in difficult light. In a backlit portrait, move the subject or your position so the face is not the darkest area, then tap the face if the camera interface offers focus and exposure control. Review highlights in bright skies and reflective surfaces before leaving the scene.
  5. Use the right distance for portraits. Step back and use the Nothing’s longer perspective when available instead of placing a wide lens close to a face. With the Pixel, create separation by moving the subject away from the background and keeping the composition simple.
  6. Check the frame at full size. A photo can look sharp in a thumbnail while showing blur, missed focus or digital-zoom artifacts when enlarged. Review a test frame before photographing an unrepeatable event.
  7. Make a short sequence for motion. Take several frames of children, pets or action rather than trusting one press. Select the sharpest expression afterward; this is a practical way to improve hit rate regardless of the phone’s processing.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Confirm the phone is new, unlocked and intended for your country.
  • Record the exact model number, storage capacity and seller before paying.
  • Check that the return window covers camera defects, carrier incompatibility and an incorrect regional variant.
  • Install system and camera updates before judging image quality.
  • Test the main, ultrawide and (on the Nothing) telephoto views in daylight and indoors.
  • Photograph a moving person and a high-contrast scene to check whether the phone meets your expectations.
  • Verify that your preferred carrier accepts the model’s bands and eSIM or SIM arrangement.
  • Back up sample photos before resetting or returning a phone.

Common mistakes under a $400 camera-phone budget

Choosing megapixels over the complete camera

A 50 MP or 48 MP label does not by itself determine color, focus reliability, HDR behavior or night performance. The Pixel 9a’s documented advantage is processing consistency, while the Nothing Phone (3a) combines a 50 MP main camera with a broader advertised zoom system. Evaluate the whole experience instead of ranking phones by one number.

Counting digital zoom as telephoto

Every phone can enlarge a frame digitally, but enlargement is not the same as adding an optical viewpoint. The Pixel 9a has no dedicated telephoto in its documented setup. The Nothing Phone (3a) is the relevant alternative because its specifications advertise a telephoto perspective and a 0.6x–30x range. At the top of any zoom range, expect quality to vary with light and stability.

Ignoring the promotion that makes a phone qualify

The Pixel recommendation depends on a $379–$399 discounted price, and the A56 recommendation depends on finding a sale below $400. If the offer expires, recalculate the comparison using the price you can actually pay rather than preserving an old ranking.

Buying an incompatible regional model

Regional listings can differ in storage, software, warranty and network support. Nothing’s quoted starting price is especially important to verify because the exact market and tier are not established by the family-level price alone. Carrier compatibility is part of the camera-phone decision: a superb camera is of little use if the device cannot connect reliably where you live.

Bottom line

For a strict US$400 ceiling, buy the Google Pixel 9a when the unlocked promotion is around $379–$399 and you want the most dependable automatic photography. Choose the Nothing Phone (3a) when its telephoto perspective and 6.77-inch display solve a problem the Pixel cannot. Treat the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G as a sale-only option and verify the exact unlocked price, storage and regional model on the day you order.
