The Amateur Photographer guide published September 17, 2026, names the Vanguard VEO Metro B25L its best camera bag for photographers overall. That is a useful starting point, not a universal fit: the right choice depends on your camera and lenses, how much you carry, and whether you need quick access, all-day comfort, or room for travel gear.
How to choose a camera bag that fits your kit
Start with the equipment you actually take out. A bag’s stated capacity does not guarantee that a particular camera-and-lens combination will fit. Check the interior dimensions and divider layout against your camera body with its usual lens attached, spare lenses, flash, batteries, and accessories. Padded, adjustable dividers help separate equipment and reduce knocks.
Then choose the carrying format for the outing. A backpack usually spreads a larger load across both shoulders; a sling or messenger can make gear easier to reach but carries weight differently. A padded insert is useful if you want to use an ordinary backpack or shoulder bag rather than carry a dedicated camera bag.

- For travel or a longer walk: prioritize a supportive harness and enough room for the kit you will carry, not just the largest capacity label.
- For street photography: consider access speed and how discreetly you can manage the bag in a crowd.
- For trekking or long lenses: look for a technical pack, appropriate support, and compartments that fit the lens dimensions.
- For a small everyday kit: a compact sling, messenger, or insert may be easier to carry than a full-size backpack.

Access design is part of the choice, not a minor detail. Side access can let you reach a camera without fully opening a pack; back-panel access changes how the bag opens and where its contents are exposed. Check how the opening works in the place you expect to shoot. Weather protection also varies: water-resistant materials, weatherproof construction, and a separate rain cover are not interchangeable. Confirm whether a cover is included, where it is stored, and what protection the manufacturer claims.

Use real kit examples as a fit check—not a guarantee
A review of the Shimoda Urban Explore 25 by TechRadar reports that the reviewer packed a Sony A7 IV with an FE 24–70mm f/4, three additional lenses, and a flashgun. The review says several large lenses may call for the 30L version and describes side-flap and back-panel access. It also notes the 25 lacks a waist strap and suggests a technical pack with hip straps for photography treks. Those are review observations, not a promise that your equipment will fit.

WIRED’s camera-bag examples show how widely intended kit size can vary: its reviewer fit a Nikon Z6 III with a 50mm lens attached, an 80mm lens, and a speedlight in a 10-liter messenger with an added insert. The guide describes a 2-liter sling as intended for a slim point-and-shoot, phone, or very compact mirrorless camera. Use those examples to understand the range, not as substitutes for checking your own equipment.

What to verify before you buy
- Interior fit: compare internal dimensions with the camera body, mounted lens, and largest additional lens you plan to carry.
- Divider arrangement: make sure the dividers can separate your gear and leave space for accessories you actually use.
- Access: check whether you prefer top, front, side, or back-panel access and how safely you can open the bag where you shoot.
- Comfort: assess strap width, harness design, waist support where relevant, and the weight of the fully packed bag.
- Weather: distinguish material claims from a supplied rain cover, and check the maker’s stated limits.
