When your carrier shows only an unknown number, start with the Google Phone app’s built-in caller ID and spam protection if you use a supported Android device. Choose Truecaller for the broadest all-purpose combination of live identification, reverse lookup, spam warnings, and blocking. Choose Hiya when scam screening is the priority, and CallApp when you want reverse lookup plus social context across messaging services.
No caller-ID database can prove who is calling. Use an app’s name or risk label as a lead, then verify independently before sharing information, returning money, or granting account access.
Which caller-ID app should you choose?
| App | Best fit | What its documented offering emphasizes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Phone | Android users wanting a built-in first check | Caller ID and spam protection for numbers outside your contacts | Availability depends on having a compatible Android device and the feature being available in your region |
| Truecaller | A broad, general-purpose caller-ID workflow | Real-time caller ID, spam detection, reverse search, and blocking | The free tier includes ads; premium features require a paid tier |
| Hiya | People who prioritize scam screening and call safety | AI-assisted scam detection, screening, summaries, transcripts, and synthetic-voice detection | Features vary by device, operating system, carrier, plan, and geography; some screening requires call forwarding in the United States and Canada |
| CallApp | Users who want identification with social and messaging context | Reverse lookup, blocking, contact enrichment, and identification in WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS | Its published database-size claim is not an independent accuracy test |
There is no neutral head-to-head accuracy study in the available evidence, so a larger database claim should not be treated as proof that an app will identify every number better than its competitors. Results depend on country, carrier, operating system, language, reporting history, and whether the number has been indexed.
Why carrier caller names fail
Carrier caller-name systems generally rely on a network-level name record. That record may be missing for a new business, a mobile number, a recently reassigned number, or a caller whose information is not published in your region. It can also be suppressed when the caller blocks caller ID. An app adds another layer: it consults its own indexed numbers, user reports, business records, and, depending on the product, web or social sources.
#1 Best Overall
- Caller ID/Call Waiting
- 80-name/number Caller ID history
- 13-number memory
- Display dial
- Mute/flash.Last number redial.Ringer volume control.Desk/wall mountable.White
That extra layer helps with numbers your carrier cannot label, but it does not turn an unknown number into a verified identity. A recycled number may still display an old owner’s name, a legitimate business can be mislabeled as spam after repeated reports, and fraudsters can spoof a trusted number. Treat every result as a clue rather than authentication.
Google Phone: the sensible first check on Android
What it does
Google says that when someone outside your contact list calls you, or you call them, the number is sent to Google to help identify a business caller-ID name or determine whether the call is spam. The built-in caller ID and spam-protection feature therefore gives Android users a baseline without installing a separate database app.
When it is the best choice
- You want the least complicated starting point.
- You prefer a feature integrated into the phone dialer rather than a separate caller-ID service.
- You mainly need a business name or a spam indication, not a large set of social or reverse-search tools.
What to check before relying on it
Google Phone is not present on every Android handset, and feature availability can vary by device and region. If your phone does not offer caller ID and spam protection, or if it consistently leaves relevant calls unlabeled, move to a dedicated app rather than assuming the number is safe.
Privacy implication
The lookup is not purely local. Google’s documented behavior sends numbers outside your contacts to Google for identification or spam classification. Consider that data flow when deciding whether a built-in convenience outweighs your privacy preference.
Truecaller: the broadest all-purpose workflow
What the free tier covers
Truecaller’s free tier includes real-time caller ID, spam detection, manual blocking, and basic number search. It is the most balanced starting point when you want to recognize a call as it arrives, investigate a number afterward, and stop repeat callers without paying for advanced controls. The free experience includes ads.
What the premium tier changes
Truecaller’s premium tier adds ad-free use and advanced blocking, among other features. The exact plan, price, and feature availability can change, so check the offer shown for your device and country before subscribing.
Where its scale helps—and where it does not
Truecaller reported, for 2025, that it identified 68 billion spam and fraud calls, 179 billion spam and fraud SMS messages, and 3.3 trillion unknown calls, and that it had 500 million monthly active users. Those are company-reported activity figures, not a controlled accuracy benchmark. They indicate the scale of the service, but they cannot establish that a particular local number will be identified correctly.

Choose it when
- You need one app for live identification, search, spam warnings, and blocking.
- You are comfortable with an ad-supported free tier and optional paid upgrades.
- You want a general-purpose tool rather than a product centered on one screening feature.
Hiya: strongest fit for scam-focused screening
Safety features
Hiya AI Phone describes real-time scam protection, an AI assistant that can intelligently screen unknown callers, call summaries, transcripts, and synthetic-voice detection. This makes it the most safety-oriented option in the shortlist for readers who want help judging a suspicious conversation, not merely a name on the incoming-call screen.
Lookup and reporting
Hiya’s App Store listing says unknown-number lookup and spam reports are available. Those functions are useful when a call has already ended and you need to investigate the number or record a report.
Availability constraints
Hiya explicitly notes that support varies by device, operating system, carrier, plan, and geography. Some call-screening features require carrier call forwarding and are limited to the United States and Canada. A feature shown in the product description may therefore be unavailable on your handset, with your carrier, or in your country.
A realistic expectation
Hiya says detection is designed to help identify risk but cannot identify every unwanted or suspicious call. Its published figure that 86% of people will not answer a number they do not recognize, with no year stated on the accessed page, describes caller behavior rather than Hiya’s detection accuracy.
Choose it when
- Your main concern is scam risk and controlled handling of unknown calls.
- You can use the required carrier features where you live.
- You want summaries or transcripts after calls, subject to the device and plan support shown to you.
CallApp: identification with social and messaging context
What it adds
CallApp says it can identify more than 8 billion unknown numbers worldwide; the page does not state a year for that figure. Its support documentation describes reverse lookup, blocking, and contact enrichment from social networks and web sources. The service also supports identification across WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS, which is useful when an unknown contact reaches you outside the standard phone dialer.
Why social context can be useful
A reverse result may show more than a caller name: a business association, a public profile, or other context drawn from social and web sources. That can help you decide whether to return a call, but it also means the displayed profile may be incomplete, outdated, or associated with the wrong person. Do not treat a social match as proof of identity.
Choose it when
- You receive unknown contacts through messaging apps as well as ordinary calls.
- You value contact enrichment and web or social context.
- You want reverse lookup and blocking in the same service.
How to compare the apps on the issues that matter
Identification coverage
Coverage is shaped by the number of indexed records, reporting activity, business listings, and local adoption. A service may recognize a widely reported scam number but fail on a legitimate mobile number that has never appeared in its data. CallApp’s “over 8 billion” and Truecaller’s 2025 activity figures describe database or usage scale, not guaranteed coverage for your particular country.
Rank #3
- 25-Minute Digital Answering System — Never miss a message again. Record up to 25 minutes of incoming calls, outgoing announcements, and memos with easy instant playback, selective save/delete, and the ability to skip or repeat messages right from the handset or base
- Extra-Large Tiltable Backlit Display — See Caller ID names, numbers, time, and date at a glance — even Call Waiting. The oversized LCD tilts for the perfect viewing angle, reducing strain for seniors and anyone with vision needs
- Oversized Big Buttons — Large, high-contrast keys are easy to read and press — ideal for elderly users, arthritis, or low vision. Simple, frustration-free dialing every time
- Hands-Free Speakerphone — Talk and listen comfortably without holding the handset. Perfect for multitasking, note-taking, or including the whole family in the conversation
- Reliable Corded Design with Audio Assist — Works even during power outages. Audio Assist temporarily boosts volume and clarity for better hearing, plus an extra-loud ringer with visual flashing indicator
Spam and scam detection
Google Phone provides a business caller-ID or spam determination through its integrated service. Truecaller combines live identification with spam detection. Hiya puts the strongest emphasis on real-time scam protection and screening. CallApp combines identification with blocking and contextual lookup. None of these labels is conclusive: sophisticated fraud can use new numbers or spoof a legitimate one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBlocking and screening
Truecaller’s free tier includes manual blocking, while its premium tier adds advanced blocking. Hiya’s screening controls depend on supported devices, carriers, plans, and locations, and some require call forwarding. CallApp documents blocking as part of its support offering. Google Phone is the baseline option when its spam-protection controls are available on your Android phone.
Reverse-search depth
Truecaller provides basic search in its free tier. Hiya offers unknown-number lookup and spam reports according to its App Store listing. CallApp documents reverse lookup plus enrichment from social networks and web sources. Google Phone is designed primarily for caller-ID and spam identification rather than a broad social reverse-search workflow.
Android and iPhone considerations
Google Phone’s documented option is specifically an Android feature. Truecaller, Hiya, and CallApp availability and capabilities depend on the operating system and the version offered in your store. Hiya is especially explicit that device and operating-system differences can change which features appear. Check the current listing for your handset instead of assuming that a feature advertised for one platform is available on another.
Country, carrier, and language limits
Caller-ID databases are not geographically uniform. A number can be recognized in one country and unknown in another, and a carrier may restrict call forwarding or screening integrations. Hiya’s documented United States and Canada restriction for some forwarding-based screening is a concrete example. Language support and business-directory coverage can also affect the quality of the displayed name.

Privacy and permissions: what the lookup requires
Number transmission
Google documents that numbers outside your contacts are sent to Google for caller-ID or spam determination. Dedicated apps may also need to process incoming numbers, call metadata, contacts, or messaging notifications to provide live identification and blocking. The exact permission screen depends on your operating system and the app version; read it rather than approving every request automatically.
Contacts and enrichment
Contact enrichment and social context can require broader access than a simple spam label. If you do not need those functions, deny optional permissions where the operating system allows it. Restricting access can reduce functionality, so decide whether reverse-search depth is worth the additional data exposure.
Rank #4
- [13 Speed Dial Keys] - With 3 dedicated memory keys to do one touch dialing to your 3 favorite numbers. Additionally 10 more numbers for two touch dialing using the number keys on keypad.
- [Display dialing & Last Number Redial] - The redial button help to dial the last number swiftly. Telephone numbers in the Caller ID log can be dialed with the touch of a button.
- [Caller ID / Call Waiting] - See who is calling with caller ID / call waiting. The handset displays the name, number, time and date of incoming calls. Stores 80 call record entries. For the Caller ID to function, three Alkaline AA batteries (not included) are necessary.
- [No AC Power Required] The Line-power mode enables you to connect to the world without any dependency on power at your premises. Standby time over one year & talk time over 6 months. Handset will indicate low battery when required.
- [[Easy Wall Mountable] This phone was designed to easily hang on the wall of your home and office so that you can keep on doing your activities and be able to take the call when required.
Practical privacy checks
- Review the app’s permissions immediately after installation and again after major updates.
- Turn off access that is not necessary for the feature you intend to use.
- Check whether caller-ID processing is performed through a cloud service rather than only on the phone.
- Use the operating system’s privacy dashboard or permission manager to confirm what the app actually accessed.
Free tiers, paid plans, and changing availability
The evidence supports a clear free-versus-paid distinction only for Truecaller: its free tier has ads and its premium tier adds ad-free use and advanced blocking, among other features. Hiya’s capabilities can depend on the plan, and the available material does not establish a single universal price or feature bundle. The same caution applies to CallApp and Google Phone: store listings, carrier agreements, country rules, and product plans can change.
Before paying, test the exact function you need—such as live screening, reverse lookup, or advanced blocking—on your own handset. A subscription is not a guarantee that a local number will be found, and a paid feature may still be unavailable because of carrier or regional restrictions.

Step 1: Start with the built-in option
If you use Android and your phone offers Google Phone caller ID and spam protection, enable that feature and observe how it labels ordinary business calls and suspected spam. This gives you a baseline without adding another service.
Step 2: Select one dedicated app for a specific gap
Install Truecaller if you need a broad combination of identification, search, spam warnings, and blocking. Select Hiya if scam screening is the deciding factor and your carrier supports the required features. Select CallApp if identification across WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, and social or web context matters most.
Step 3: Grant only the permissions required for that job
Allow the permissions needed for incoming-call identification or blocking, then review optional contact, messaging, and notification access separately. If a feature does not work after you deny a permission, decide whether that feature is worth restoring the access.
Step 4: Test with known-safe numbers
Use a business number you can verify independently and a previously reported nuisance number. Compare whether the app shows a name, a category, or no result. Do not use a sensitive personal number as a test case, and do not conclude that one successful lookup proves universal accuracy.

Step 5: Establish a verification rule
For calls involving money, passwords, account recovery, delivery changes, employment, or government services, end the call and contact the organization through a number from its official website, statement, or card. Never rely solely on the name displayed by a caller-ID app.

You can also permanently blacklist any number you want with one touch on the dedicated key on the handset. The call block directory can store up to 1,000 name and number entries. Plus, the handset announces the name of the caller, so you can decide to answer the call or block it - screening calls has never been easier
- LARGE 2-INCH SCREEN, BIG TEXT, LIGHTED KEY PAD: High-contrast text on the extra-large 2 inch screen makes it easy to read incoming caller ID or call history records. Plus, the enlarged font and extra-large and lighted handset keypad allows for easy dialing in low-light conditions. This feature is helpful for those who are visually impaired
- HANDSET SPEAKERPHONE, AUDIO ASSIST, INTERCOM: This cordless system has built-in full-duplex speakerphone on handset allowing both ends to speak - and be heard - at the same time for conversations that are more true to life. Troubleshooting when identification still fails
The app shows “unknown” for every call
- Confirm that the app is the permitted caller-ID or spam-protection service in your phone settings.
- Check that the app can access the incoming-call information it needs.
- Verify that your carrier and country support the feature.
- Test whether the problem affects all numbers or only unlisted mobile numbers.
Screening or call summaries are missing
Hiya’s advanced functions can depend on device, operating system, carrier, plan, geography, and call-forwarding support. Check each dependency before assuming the app is malfunctioning. A feature may be correctly installed but unavailable under your current carrier arrangement.
The displayed name is wrong
Report the error through the app if that option is provided, then verify the caller independently. Reassigned numbers, stale business records, user-submitted labels, and spoofing can all produce a convincing but incorrect result.
Blocking does not stop the calls
Blocking an identified number cannot stop a fraudster who changes numbers or spoofs another caller ID. Keep the operating system and app updated, use network-level spam controls when your carrier offers them, and report persistent abuse through the appropriate carrier or national reporting channel.
Safety rules for unknown callers
- Do not disclose one-time codes, passwords, payment-card details, identity documents, or remote-access credentials because an app displays a familiar name.
- Do not transfer money or buy gift cards to “fix” an account after an unsolicited call.
- Be suspicious of urgency, threats, secrecy, and requests to move the conversation to another channel.
- Hang up and dial an independently verified number when the caller claims to represent a bank, employer, delivery company, or public agency.
- Remember that a real organization’s name can be spoofed just as easily as a personal number.
A decision framework for common situations
You use Android and want the simplest solution
Try Google Phone’s built-in caller ID and spam protection first. Add a dedicated app only if its labels, lookup tools, or blocking controls do not cover your needs.
You want one general-purpose app
Truecaller is the most rounded choice in this shortlist because its free tier combines live caller ID, spam detection, manual blocking, and basic search, with premium upgrades for ad-free use and advanced blocking.
You receive sophisticated scam calls
Hiya is the logical fit when real-time scam screening, intelligent handling of unknown callers, summaries, transcripts, or synthetic-voice detection matter more than broad social enrichment. Confirm that your carrier, country, device, and plan support the functions you want.
You communicate through several messaging services
CallApp is the relevant choice when identification in WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS, together with reverse lookup and social or web enrichment, is central to your workflow.
You need certainty for a high-stakes call
None of the four apps is sufficient by itself. Use the app only to prioritize or categorize the call, then verify through an independent official contact route.
What the published scale figures do—and do not—tell you
Truecaller’s 2025 figures—68 billion spam and fraud calls, 179 billion spam and fraud SMS messages, 3.3 trillion unknown calls, and 500 million monthly active users—show substantial activity at global scale. CallApp’s claim of more than 8 billion unknown numbers identified, with no year stated on the accessed page, shows the size it attributes to its database. These numbers cannot be compared as accuracy rates: they use different definitions, periods, and counting methods, and neither establishes performance for a particular country or number.
Hiya’s statement that 86% of people will not answer an unfamiliar number, with no year stated, is a behavioral statistic rather than a measure of detection quality. The meaningful test for you is whether the chosen app provides useful, correctly qualified signals on the calls you actually receive while respecting the permissions and carrier limits you accept.
