There is no independently proven winner that blocks the most unwanted calls on both platforms. Start with your phone’s own controls: iPhone can silence or screen unknown callers, while Google’s Phone app can screen calls on supported devices and locations. Add a third-party app only when you need richer caller identification, text filtering, screening, voicemail handling, or configurable block lists. The right choice depends on your operating system, carrier, tolerance for permissions, and whether you want calls labeled, silenced, screened, or stopped before they reach voicemail.
The comparison below separates documented features from vendor marketing claims. Prices, trials, carrier support, and regional availability can change, so verify the offer shown in your app store before subscribing.
Quick picks by what you need
| Option | Best fit | Platforms and support | What it advertises | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone built-in controls | Silencing unknown callers without installing an app | iPhone; exact labels vary by iOS version | Unknown-caller silencing and call-management controls | Silenced calls can still appear in Recents and may go to voicemail. |
| Google Phone call screening | Android owners whose device and location support screening | Supported Android devices and regions | Automated screening before you answer | Availability and menu labels depend on device, software, and country. |
| Hiya Spam Blocker | Caller identification plus screening and scam-alert features | iOS, Android, and Pixel features vary | Spam identification, call screening, fraud alerts, AI voice/deepfake detection, and voicemail protection | Some functions are Premium; individual, non-business number identification is Premium and unavailable in Europe. Blocked calls may still reach voicemail. |
| Truecaller | Configurable caller ID, robocall blocking, and allow/block lists | Android and iPhone, with materially different setup and controls | Identification and blocking for robocalls, telemarketers, scams, fraud, and harassment | Blocking private/hidden and international numbers is documented as Android-only. Review permissions and data practices yourself. |
| Nomorobo Basic | Cross-carrier filtering with text and voicemail tools | iPhone and Android on all carriers, according to Nomorobo | Call screening, voicemail transcription, personalized lists, and spam-text protection | Nomorobo lists $2.99 per month or $19.99 per year and a seven-day trial; confirm current regional pricing. |
| Nomorobo Max | Eligible customers wanting the higher tier | T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, according to Nomorobo | Higher-plan filtering and related call-management features | Not listed as available on every carrier. |
| RoboKiller | People interested in answer bots and spam-text features | App Store listing reviewed; device and regional details vary | Call blocking, answer bots, and spam-text filtering | Free download, but a subscription is required after the trial and renews automatically unless canceled under the applicable terms. |

iPhone: silence or screen unknown callers
Apple provides built-in controls for calls from numbers that are not saved in Contacts. Open the Phone settings on your iPhone and look for the current unknown-caller option; iOS versions may label the choices differently. Depending on the version, you can silence unknown callers or have the phone ask the caller for a reason before it rings through. Calls managed this way can remain visible in Recents and can be sent to voicemail rather than being disconnected.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
- IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
- Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
Native controls are useful when your priority is quiet rather than a database-driven caller name. They also avoid granting a third-party service access to call-management features. The trade-off is that a legitimate first-time caller—such as a clinic, courier, school, or prospective employer—may be treated like spam unless you save the number or return the call from your history.
Android: use Google’s Call Screen when supported
Google’s Phone help identifies Call Screen as a device- and location-dependent feature. In the Phone app, open Settings and look for Spam and Call Screen or a similarly named section. If Call Screen is offered, configure whether calls are screened automatically or manually and review the language, country, and device restrictions shown on your screen. There is no single Android menu path that applies to every manufacturer or region.
Android also commonly includes a spam-ID setting in the native Phone app. Turn it on if you want suspected spam labeled before installing another filter. If you use a manufacturer’s calling app instead of Google Phone, look for its own caller-ID and spam settings; the names and capabilities can differ.

What a call-blocking app can—and cannot—do
Labels, silences, screens, and blocks are different actions
- Identification displays a name or category, such as telemarketer or suspected fraud, so you can decide whether to answer.
- Silencing prevents a ring or vibration but generally leaves a record in call history.
- Screening answers an unknown call with an automated prompt and can collect the caller’s reason before you decide.
- Blocking rejects or diverts a call according to what the operating system permits.
Marketing pages often use “blocked” broadly. Hiya explains that operating-system restrictions prevent call-management apps on both iPhone and Android from fully disconnecting every blocked caller. A blocked call may therefore be routed to voicemail. Hiya’s Call Screener is designed to answer unknown calls and screen callers before they can leave a message, which can reduce—but does not guarantee elimination of—unwanted voicemail.
Permissions are part of the product
To identify or intercept calls, an app may need access to caller-ID and call-blocking extensions supplied by iOS or Android. The operating system normally asks you to enable those permissions in Settings. If you skip them, the app may open and show a database but be unable to label incoming calls or enforce a block list. Recheck the permission after a major OS update, because updates can disable or reset extensions.
Hiya Spam Blocker: identification and screening in one app
Hiya’s product materials describe spam identification, call screening, fraud alerts, and AI voice/deepfake detection, with availability shown across iOS, Android, and Pixel. Its plan comparison presents basic protection as free and assigns additional functions to Premium.

What the paid tier adds
Hiya support says Premium includes automatic scam and nuisance-call blocking, enhanced caller ID, call screening, voicemail protection, and more frequent iPhone spam updates. It also says identification of individual, non-business numbers is a Premium function and is unavailable in Europe. Those are product and availability statements from Hiya, not results from an independent efficacy test.

Hiya is a logical shortlist candidate if you value an identified caller name, an option to screen unknown callers, and a single app that also flags fraud-related activity. Check the exact functions shown for your country and operating system before paying. If your main goal is to prevent voicemail, remember that the underlying iPhone and Android restrictions still apply.
Truecaller: configurable caller ID and blocking
Truecaller says it identifies and can block robocalls, telemarketers, scams, fraud, and harassment. Its documented controls include automatic blocking and user-managed allow and block lists, making it attractive when you want more control than a simple unknown-caller switch.
Android setup
- Install and open Truecaller, then follow its onboarding prompts.
- In Android’s default-app or calling settings, select Truecaller for caller ID and spam protection when the system presents that option.
- Review the app’s block categories and add any numbers or patterns you want to allow or reject.
- Place a test call from a known number, if possible, to confirm that caller ID and blocking permissions are active.
iPhone setup
- Install Truecaller and complete its in-app setup.
- Open iPhone Settings, go to Phone, then open Call Blocking & Identification.
- Enable Truecaller’s caller-ID and blocking extension.
- Return to the app and configure its block or allow lists.
Truecaller documents blocking of hidden or private numbers and international numbers as an Android-only feature. Do not assume the same controls will appear on iPhone. The feature page reviewed here is not a privacy audit or a cross-platform accuracy test, so compare the permissions and data handling you are comfortable granting.
Nomorobo: plan and carrier compatibility matter
Nomorobo lists two consumer tiers with different eligibility. Its Basic plan is listed at $2.99 per month or $19.99 per year and includes a seven-day trial. Those figures are time-sensitive and may differ by country, tax, app store, or promotion.
| Nomorobo tier | Documented carrier scope | Listed tools | Price information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | iPhone and Android across all carriers, according to Nomorobo | Call screening, voicemail transcription, personalized allow/block lists, and spam-text protection | $2.99/month or $19.99/year; seven-day trial listed |
| Max | T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, according to Nomorobo | Higher-tier call-management features; check the current plan page for the complete list | Not stated in the reviewed material |
Privacy language and scale claims
Nomorobo states that it does not access call logs and does not upload address books to its servers. Treat that as the company’s privacy statement, not as an independently audited guarantee.

- This is the latest version Telephone Call Blocker with hidden or unavailable call numbers can be blocked. And there is no fees to use it; Please keep the manual for future use.
- Block up to 4000 individual phone numbers, including incoming and outgoing calls , prefixes and up to 10 digit area codes.
- One-touch to Block: Locate a number and then press Block to add it to the blacklist.Better set the call blocker in series ( one end of it connected to your phone and another end to the PSTN telephone line); Though it can also be set up parallel, but not compatible with some phone systems.
- Permanent storage of the numbers in the blacklist even power is off or telephone line is plugged out.
- Battery free: It is line powered, no need battery. And it works with almost all single line telephones. If you find some numbers are blocked but you never mean to, then press Block and check your blacklist, then delete those numbers which like area codes or prefix numbers.
Nomorobo reported in 2025 that it had blocked more than 4.1 billion spam calls and texts and maintained 13.8 million known robocallers and SMS senders. These are company-reported scale figures; they do not establish a comparative blocking rate or prove that the service will stop a particular caller.
The company also uses a “100% protection” claim in its materials. That wording should not be read as an independently verified outcome, and no blocking service can ensure that every unwanted call will be disconnected before voicemail.
Who should consider it
Nomorobo is worth examining when carrier compatibility and voicemail or text tools are more important than a simple caller-name lookup. Check the carrier before choosing Max; Basic is the tier Nomorobo describes as broadly compatible.
RoboKiller: answer bots with a subscription commitment
The reviewed App Store listing describes call blocking, answer bots, and spam-text features. RoboKiller says the app is free to download but requires a subscription after its trial; the subscription renews automatically unless you cancel under the applicable store terms.
The listing also claims that up to 99% of unwanted calls are eliminated within seven days of signing up. That is RoboKiller’s own marketing statement, not an independently established, cross-platform test result. The reviewed listing did not establish one universal price, trial duration, or identical feature set for every country and device, so confirm those details before starting a trial.
An answer-bot approach may suit someone who would rather let an automated system engage a suspected caller than simply send the number away. It is less suitable if you want a permanently free solution or do not want to monitor subscription renewal.

How to choose among the apps
1. Start with platform, device, and carrier
Confirm that the app supports your operating system version and that its call-management extension is available in your country. If you are considering Nomorobo Max, verify that your carrier is T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T. Android owners should also check whether their handset uses Google Phone or a manufacturer’s calling app and whether Call Screen is supported.
2. Decide what “stop” means to you
- Choose native silencing if you mainly want fewer interruptions.
- Choose caller ID if you need to distinguish an unknown customer, delivery, or medical call from a likely nuisance.
- Choose screening if you want an automated prompt to collect a reason before you answer.
- Choose a configurable blocker if you need allow lists, category rules, or private-number controls.
- Choose voicemail and text features if unwanted messages are as disruptive as ringing calls.
3. Check what happens after a block
Ask whether the app labels, silences, rejects, or diverts calls. On both major mobile platforms, a call that appears blocked may still reach voicemail. If voicemail cleanup is central to your decision, prioritize a documented screening or voicemail-protection feature instead of assuming a block button will disconnect the caller.
4. Compare free functions with the paid trigger
Read the in-app plan screen before enabling a trial. Hiya places several identification and screening functions in Premium. Nomorobo lists separate Basic and Max tiers. RoboKiller requires a subscription after its trial. Record the renewal date and cancel through the App Store or Google Play subscription page if you do not intend to continue.
5. Read privacy disclosures in context
Look at the permissions requested, whether contacts or call information are uploaded, how data is retained, and whether the app offers controls to revoke access. Vendor statements—such as Nomorobo’s claim that it does not access call logs or upload address books—are useful information, but they are not the same as an independent audit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup checklist for a reliable first day
- Update iOS or Android and the phone app you use for calls.
- Save essential contacts, including doctors, schools, delivery services, and family members, so they are not treated as unknown callers.
- Enable the native spam-ID, unknown-caller, or Call Screen feature available on your phone.
- Install only one primary third-party call-management app at first. Multiple apps can create overlapping labels, duplicate prompts, or unclear precedence.
- Grant the requested caller-ID and blocking permissions in system Settings, not just inside the app.
- Review categories such as private numbers, international numbers, telemarketers, and suspected fraud before enabling automatic blocking.
- Call your phone from a trusted number and send a test text to confirm that wanted communication still arrives.
- Check voicemail after a test block. If the call still leaves a message, use screening or your carrier’s voicemail controls rather than assuming the block failed.
- Write down the trial end date and renewal amount displayed for your account.
Troubleshooting common failures
A blocked caller still leaves voicemail
This is often an operating-system limitation rather than a broken installation. Confirm that the app’s call-blocking extension is enabled, then check whether it offers screening or voicemail protection. If neither is available, the most reliable response may be to silence unknown calls and delete or filter unwanted voicemail.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Caller ID works, but blocking does not
Caller identification and blocking can use separate permissions. Reopen the phone’s call-blocking settings, make sure the app is enabled there, and restart the device. On iPhone, verify the app under Phone’s Call Blocking & Identification section. On Android, check the selected caller-ID and spam app or default calling app.
Best Value
- REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
- 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
- BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. When a new unwanted number gets through, simply press the large red BLOCK NOW button to prevent repeat calls from that number. Store up to 10,000 additional numbers.
- SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
- IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.
Legitimate calls are being filtered
Turn off the most aggressive category rules, add the number to Contacts or an allow list, and review recent call history for false positives. Avoid blocking all unknown numbers if you regularly receive calls from organizations that cannot publish a consistent outbound number.
The app is unavailable or missing a feature
Check your country, device model, OS version, carrier, and subscription tier. Truecaller’s private/international blocking controls are documented as Android-only. Nomorobo Max is not described as universal across carriers. Hiya’s Premium number-identification feature is unavailable in Europe for individual, non-business numbers.
A trial turned into a charge
Open your Apple or Google subscription settings, cancel before the renewal date, and retain the cancellation confirmation. Deleting the app does not necessarily cancel a subscription.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
The vendor pages establish that these apps offer different combinations of caller ID, blocking, screening, text filtering, and voicemail tools. They do not provide a neutral, same-device, same-carrier test that ranks accuracy across iPhone and Android. Company-reported totals and percentages describe each vendor’s own methodology or marketing position, not a common benchmark.
For that reason, choose on fit rather than an absolute “best” label: native controls for a no-cost first step, Hiya for its advertised identification and screening bundle, Truecaller for configurable identification and lists, Nomorobo when carrier and voicemail/text coverage fit, and RoboKiller when answer bots are worth a subscription. Recheck every price, trial, carrier rule, and regional feature at the moment you subscribe.
