The best built-in fridge freezer is the one that fits your cabinet precisely, gives you the fridge-to-freezer balance your household uses, and matches the cabinet-door hinge system. There is no defensible single “best” model from the available evidence: model-level independent test scores and a current winner were not established. Use the checks below to choose an integrated appliance that will fit, perform acceptably and cost what you expect to install and run.
Built-in and integrated do not always mean exactly the same thing
Retailers often use built-in and integrated interchangeably, but the visible finish can differ. Teka describes a fully integrated refrigerator as one hidden behind the kitchen cabinetry. In other built-in arrangements, the appliance door, handles or controls can remain visible. Confirm what the product page means before assuming that the finished front will match your units.
An integrated fridge freezer is installed inside a tall cabinet rather than standing as a finished appliance in the room. The cabinet, ventilation openings, plinth and furniture door all affect whether the installation is safe and whether the doors open properly. A specification that looks suitable on a retailer page is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s installation drawing.
Measure the housing before comparing models
Which? says built-in models are usually designed for a 60 cm-wide kitchen cupboard, are usually about 55 cm deep and range from roughly 100 cm to 200 cm in height. Those are category-level guide figures, not a promise that any particular cabinet will accept any particular appliance. Measure your own niche and then compare those measurements with the exact model drawing.

Record the measurements an installer needs
- Internal height: measure from the finished cabinet base to the underside of the top panel at several points. Record the smallest result.
- Internal width: measure near the front and rear. Older units can taper or have proud hinges that reduce the usable opening.
- Internal depth: measure behind the door line, accounting for sockets, pipes and any rear service void.
- Floor and plinth position: note whether the appliance will sit on the cabinet base and where the plinth will meet the door.
- Door swing and clearance: measure the space beside the cabinet so the doors can open far enough to pull out drawers and shelves.
- Ventilation: follow the model’s required air path and clearances; do not assume that a sealed cabinet is acceptable.
A “60 cm” cabinet is a useful starting point, but the appliance may be narrower than the cabinet and still require specific side clearances. Conversely, a small error in height or depth can prevent the furniture door from aligning or leave insufficient ventilation. Keep the appliance drawing with your kitchen plan and give it to the installer.
Check the niche height, not just the appliance height
Manufacturers may describe a model by its appliance dimensions, its recommended niche height or both. A listing for the Bosch Series 2 KIN85NSE0G gives an appliance height of 177.2 cm and width of 54.1 cm; the cabinet opening and hinge clearances still need to be checked against Bosch’s fitting diagram. A model described for a 178 cm niche, such as the Miele KFN 7744 C, should be matched to the actual finished opening rather than to a nominal cabinet label.
Choose the fridge-to-freezer ratio around your shopping pattern
Integrated models commonly advertise 60/40, 70/30 or 80/20 fridge-to-freezer splits, according to Which?. The first number refers to the proportion devoted to fresh food and the second to frozen storage. Select the ratio from what you regularly store, not from the appearance of the cabinet.
When a larger fridge section makes sense
- Most of your meals use fresh produce, dairy, meat or prepared food kept for a few days.
- You shop several times a week and use frozen food mainly as a backup.
- You already have a separate chest or upright freezer.
When a larger freezer section makes sense
- You batch-cook, freeze leftovers or buy frozen food in larger quantities.
- You shop less frequently and depend on frozen ingredients between trips.
- The household needs dedicated space for frozen meals, bread or ice.
Do not treat the advertised ratio as a capacity guarantee. Door bins, drawers, shelves, evaporator housings and ice trays reduce usable space. Which? specifically notes that integrated appliances tend to provide less storage than freestanding models, so compare the stated usable fridge and freezer litres where the manufacturer supplies them. If a model gives only gross volume, ask whether usable volume is available on its data sheet.
Match the cabinet-door hinge system
The furniture door must move with the appliance door, and the fixing method is not universal. Which? warns that many models suit only one installation system. Bosch’s catalogue distinguishes sliding-hinge and flat-hinge models; the exact appliance number and fitting system must therefore be checked together.

Sliding-hinge installation
In a sliding-hinge arrangement, the cabinet door and appliance door use a linked sliding mechanism. The furniture door travels on its own cabinet-side hardware as the appliance opens. This can be correct for an existing kitchen but may be unsuitable if your cabinet is prepared for a different system.
Flat-hinge installation
A flat-hinge, sometimes called fixed-door, arrangement attaches the furniture door directly to the appliance door. The door weight, fixing points and opening angle must all comply with the model’s instructions. Do not assume that a conversion kit will make an incompatible model suitable; compatibility is model-specific and must be confirmed in the documentation.

Questions to answer before ordering
- Which hinge system does the exact model number require?
- Which system is installed on the cabinet you are keeping?
- Does the furniture door’s height, thickness and weight fall within the appliance limits?
- Are the hinge plates, brackets and screws supplied, or must the installer source approved parts?
- Will the door open far enough for internal drawers to clear the cabinet?
Compare usable performance, not feature names
Feature labels such as “freshness”, “fast cool” or “frost free” are useful prompts, but they do not prove how an appliance will perform in your kitchen. Which? says its laboratory work measures usable space, energy cost over time and the time required to cool food to a temperature safe to eat. Those are more decision-useful comparisons than a long feature list.
Energy information
Read the current UK energy label and the model’s product information sheet. Record the stated annual energy consumption and the label class for each shortlisted appliance. Annual running cost depends on your electricity tariff, so calculate it using your own rate rather than treating a retailer’s example as universal. Do not compare an old label category with a new one without checking that the scales are equivalent.

Look for the cooling functions that correspond to how you load the appliance:

- Fresh-food storage: separate drawers or humidity controls can help organise produce, but the practical benefit depends on layout and your habits.
- Freezer defrosting: a NoFrost system, as listed by Miele for the KFN 7744 C, is a manufacturer-stated feature that can reduce manual ice removal. It is not an independent performance rating.
- Lighting and controls: LED lighting and accessible controls affect day-to-day use, particularly in a tall cabinet. Miele lists LED lighting and PerfectFresh Pro on the same model.
Check whether a function changes the appliance’s energy use, occupies usable space or requires a particular loading pattern. A feature is valuable only if it solves a problem you actually have.

Plan the full cost, not only the appliance price
Which? gives a broad UK category range of about £320 to more than £1,600 for integrated fridge freezers in its guide accessed in 2026. This is a volatile guide range rather than a current quote for any model. Prices change with retailer, promotion, stock and specification.
Ask for a written total covering:
- the appliance and any required furniture-door hardware;
- delivery to your postcode and carrying the appliance into the room;
- installation, levelling and connection;
- door reversal, if the model supports it and you need it;
- removal and recycling of the old appliance;
- warranty terms, call-out arrangements and local service coverage.
Retailer services can cost extra, and availability may vary by postcode. A low appliance price can cease to be economical if the retailer does not cover a difficult delivery, if an installer must alter the cabinet or if an incompatible hinge system requires replacement work.
Current examples to use as specification checks
The following are examples of how to read a listing, not recommendations or independent test winners. Prices and availability can change, and the manufacturer’s stated features are not independent test findings.

Use a product page to identify candidate specifications, then download the current installation and energy documents. A listing that omits a measurement or hinge detail is a reason to ask the manufacturer or retailer, not a reason to guess.

A practical buying process
- Photograph and measure the empty niche. Record the smallest height, width and depth, the plinth height, nearby obstructions and the direction in which the door can open.
- Identify the existing furniture-door system. Photograph the hinge and fixing hardware. If the kitchen is new, obtain the cabinet maker’s specification.
- Set the storage split. Decide whether your routine points to 60/40, 70/30 or 80/20, then check the usable litres rather than relying on the ratio alone.
- Shortlist models that physically fit. Eliminate any model whose niche height, depth, ventilation or door-clearance requirement fails before comparing features.
- Match hinge and door limits. Confirm sliding-hinge or flat-hinge compatibility, furniture-door dimensions and supplied hardware for the exact model number.
- Read the energy and product sheets. Record the energy class, annual consumption, usable capacities and any stated noise or operating information supplied for the UK model.
- Check functions against your habits. Consider cooling recovery, freezer defrosting, produce storage, lighting, alarms and control access only where they solve a real need.
- Price the installation as one job. Get delivery, fitting, door work, old-appliance removal and warranty support in writing for your postcode.
- Have the installer confirm the drawing. Before delivery, ask the installer to verify the niche, ventilation path, hinge parts and furniture-door measurements against the current manual.
- Inspect the fit at handover. Check that the appliance is level, doors open without binding, drawers clear the furniture door, seals contact evenly and ventilation has not been blocked.
Common buying and installation mistakes
Ordering by cabinet width alone
A nominal 60 cm unit does not confirm height, depth, rear clearance or door swing. Fix: compare the measured niche with the model drawing, including ventilation and clearance dimensions.
Assuming every integrated model uses the same hinge
Sliding-hinge and flat-hinge systems are different, and many models accept only one. Fix: identify the cabinet system first and match it to the exact model number.
Choosing a ratio without checking litres
A 70/30 label does not tell you how much usable room remains after shelves, drawers and cooling hardware. Fix: compare usable fridge and freezer capacities and consider your actual shopping pattern.
Treating gross capacity as usable storage
Manufacturers can quote different capacity measures. Fix: ask for usable volumes and inspect the internal layout, especially if you rely on tall bottles, large containers or bulky frozen food.

“Freshness” or “fast cooling” is not a laboratory result. Fix: use documented functions for your shortlist and seek current independent testing before treating one model as a performance winner.

Budgeting only for the appliance
Delivery, installation, door work and recycling may be charged separately. Fix: request an itemised delivered-and-installed total and confirm postcode coverage.
Removing the old appliance before the new fit is checked
If the niche or hinge arrangement is wrong, you may lose refrigeration capacity while the cabinet is altered. Fix: have the installer verify the new model and preserve a safe way to store food during the changeover.
What to ask the retailer or installer
- Can you provide the current installation drawing and UK energy information sheet for this exact model number?
- What are the minimum and maximum niche dimensions, including required air gaps?
- Which furniture-door hinge system is required, and what door weight and thickness limits apply?
- Are all brackets and fixing parts included?
- What are the usable fridge and freezer capacities?
- What is included in the quoted delivery and installation price for my postcode?
- Will you remove and recycle the old appliance, and is that service priced separately?
- Who provides warranty repairs locally, and what happens if the appliance arrives damaged or does not fit?
Final selection checklist
Choose a model only when you can answer all of these questions with the manufacturer’s current documents or a written installer confirmation:
- Does it fit the measured niche in height, width and depth?
- Is ventilation adequate for the cabinet and model?
- Does the door open fully without striking adjacent units?
- Does its hinge system match the furniture door?
- Does the fridge/freezer capacity split suit your shopping routine?
- Are usable capacities, energy data and cooling functions clear?
- Have you allowed for delivery, installation, door work and recycling?
- Do warranty and local service arrangements meet your needs?
The strongest choice is therefore not the model with the longest feature list. It is the integrated fridge freezer whose physical fit, hinge arrangement, usable storage, energy information and installed cost have all been verified before ordering.
