The TP-Link Archer AX55 is the clearest best budget Wi-Fi 6 router pick in the available comparisons: RTINGS names it a tested budget choice, and Tom’s Guide publishes distance-based test results for it. That does not make it a universal winner or establish a ranked top five. The evidence supports a shortlist of alternatives, but not a matched five-router test or a verified shared price ceiling. Choose by home coverage, internet plan, ports, and current local price—not by an “AX” number alone.

How to read this budget-router shortlist

This is a practical shortlist, not a definitive ranking. RTINGS and Tom’s Guide provide the strongest comparative support for the Archer AX55; other models below are included as alternatives based on the available manufacturer specifications or a separate Wi-Fi 7 review. Those different evidence types cannot establish that every model was tested under the same conditions or that one is best value against the others.

Prices and stock were not verified across these models. Check a current retailer listing in your region, including shipping, before deciding what counts as budget. A low router price may not be the lowest total cost if your home also needs another access point or mesh node.

Best budget Wi-Fi 6 router: TP-Link Archer AX55

The Archer AX55 is the strongest-supported choice here for someone seeking a conventional Wi-Fi 6 router. RTINGS identifies it as its tested budget pick, while Tom’s Guide also selects it as a budget Wi-Fi 6 option. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 testing recorded 823.7 Mbps at 15 feet, 288.4 Mbps at 50 feet, and 89.6 Mbps at 75 feet. Those are results from that publication’s test setup, not a promise of the same speeds in a home; walls, interference, client devices, traffic, and internet service all affect results. TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset

What AX3000 does—and does not—mean

TP-Link lists theoretical wireless rates of 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz for the AX55. AX3000 is a class/rate label derived from advertised wireless band rates; it is not a forecast of an internet download test. A client must also support the relevant Wi-Fi capabilities, and real throughput is affected by the environment and service plan. See TP-Link’s Archer AX55 specifications.

Ports and fit

Tom’s Guide lists one gigabit WAN port, four gigabit LAN ports, and USB 3.0. It has no multi-gig port, so it is a poor port match if you specifically need a multi-gig WAN connection or multi-gig wired networking. Tom’s Guide recommends it especially for smaller homes or apartments without multi-gig internet. A faster router port also cannot increase the speed delivered by an internet plan that is slower than that port’s capacity. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 router roundup.

Other cheap routers and alternatives

These options have different levels of evidence. The AX21, AX10, and ASUS and NETGEAR models are not established here as head-to-head winners over the AX55. The BE3600 is a Wi-Fi 7 alternative with its own Tom’s Guide test data, but it is not a like-for-like Wi-Fi 6 budget ranking.

Model Evidence and role What to check
TP-Link Archer AX21 Entry-level Wi-Fi 6 alternative. TP-Link describes it as dual-band AX1800 and lists WPA3 and OneMesh. Its 1.8 Gbps figure is an advertised theoretical wireless rate, not expected internet throughput. Confirm local availability and hardware revision. TP-Link AX21 page.
TP-Link Archer AX10 Lowest-cost candidate in RTINGS’ 2026 roundup. The available source detail is not enough to make a full specification or performance comparison here. Verify current availability and the exact product specifications before purchase. RTINGS budget-router picks.
TP-Link Archer BE3600 Wi-Fi 7 stretch option. Tom’s Guide reports it as dual-band, with a 2.5 GbE input and output, three gigabit LAN ports, and USB. It lacks the 6 GHz band. Tom’s Guide reports it is often around $100, but that is a time-sensitive price report, not a guaranteed current offer. The page’s close-range results conflict, so this article does not quote them. Its displayed results include 702.3 Mbps at 50 feet, 205.2 Mbps at 75 feet, and 15.5 Mbps at 90 feet; these are that review’s test measurements, not home performance guarantees. Check the current price and full review details before comparing it with Wi-Fi 6 options. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 router roundup.
ASUS RT-AX55 Spec-based Wi-Fi 6 alternative. ASUS lists WPA3-Personal and security/network features. The available sources do not provide a matched independent performance test against the TP-Link AX55, so a speed or value advantage is not established. Confirm regional model details. ASUS RT-AX55 specifications.
NETGEAR R6700AX Spec-based alternative described by NETGEAR as a four-stream AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 router with WPA3. NETGEAR cautions that throughput and coverage vary. The available sources do not establish matched independent results against the TP-Link AX55. Confirm local model and support details. NETGEAR R6700AX product page.

Will one cheap router cover your home, or do you need mesh?

A single router can be sufficient in a smaller home or apartment if it reaches the rooms where you use Wi-Fi. The AX55 is specifically recommended by Tom’s Guide for smaller homes and apartments. If you already have persistent dead zones or need coverage across a broad or obstructed layout, compare the cost of a mesh system or additional compatible equipment with a single-router option. Mesh adds hardware and expense; it is not automatically worthwhile for a compact space.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

For the AX55, the maker says it supports EasyMesh-compatible devices, but compatibility should be confirmed for the exact region, hardware revision, and device before buying an extra node. A router’s advertised coverage or speed class alone cannot settle how it will perform through a particular home’s walls and layout.

Match the router to your plan, devices, and security needs

  • Internet plan and wired ports: If your service is multi-gig, check that the router has a WAN port capable of matching it; the AX55’s listed WAN and LAN ports are gigabit. Also consider whether wired devices need faster LAN ports.
  • Wi-Fi generation and bands: Wi-Fi 7 may be worth comparing if you have compatible clients, but the BE3600 is dual-band and does not include 6 GHz. Do not assume every Wi-Fi 7 model has the same bands or capabilities.
  • Security and revision: WPA3 is listed for the AX21, ASUS RT-AX55, and NETGEAR R6700AX in the cited product material. Confirm the precise model, regional revision, and device compatibility rather than assuming every hardware revision supports every mode.
  • Total cost: Compare the current router price, shipping, and any additional equipment needed for coverage. The available sources do not establish a live, cross-model price comparison.

How to choose among these options

  1. Check your internet service and wiring needs. Note the plan speed and whether you need multi-gig WAN or LAN. If you do, the AX55’s gigabit ports are a limiting factor for that wired connection.
  2. Assess the coverage problem. For a compact home without dead zones, begin by comparing a single-router option. For persistent gaps or a larger, obstructed layout, price a mesh alternative as a separate solution rather than assuming a more expensive single router will fix every dead zone.
  3. Compare current local listings. Check the exact model and hardware revision, price, shipping, return terms, and availability. Treat the BE3600’s reported price around $100 as a review-time observation, not a standing offer.
  4. Read speed claims in context. Treat AX1800 and AX3000 as advertised wireless-rate classes, and reviewer throughput numbers as results from a specific test environment. Neither is a guaranteed speed for your internet connection.
