For a budget PS5 upgrade, start with the connection path rather than the channel-count headline. The strongest current named candidate in the available 2026 testing is the Hisense AX5140Q, a 5.1.4-channel package with a subwoofer and wireless satellite speakers. It is a shortlist candidate, not a universal bargain: local price, stock, room size, television compatibility and your need for 4K/120Hz or VRR passthrough determine whether it is actually the right buy.
Most players should connect the PS5 directly to a compatible TV input and connect the soundbar to the TV’s ARC or eARC port. Route the console through the bar only when its exact passthrough specifications cover every video feature you use. This guide explains the trade-offs, the Sony settings that matter, and the fixes for the problems that commonly make a low-cost soundbar seem incompatible.
What makes a soundbar “budget” for PS5?
“Budget” is not a fixed worldwide price category. The current RTINGS budget roundup uses an under-$200 band, but that is the scope of that particular roundup, not a rule that every reader should spend $200 or that every model below it is equivalent. Prices, discounts, taxes and availability vary by country and change frequently. Compare the complete system cost in your market, including a subwoofer or satellites when they are optional, rather than comparing the bar’s advertised price alone.

A bar can sound perfectly adequate while still becoming the wrong purchase if it blocks 4K/120Hz or VRR when the console is connected through it. Conversely, a bar with limited video passthrough may be a sensible choice when the TV receives the PS5 picture directly and sends audio back over ARC or eARC.
#1 Best Overall
The best evidence-backed candidate right now
Hisense AX5140Q: a complete surround-style package
RTINGS’ budget roundup, updated October 6, 2026, names the Hisense AX5140Q its best budget soundbar. The reported configuration is 5.1.4 channels, with a separate subwoofer and wireless satellite speakers. That layout gives you a conventional front bar, low-frequency channel and rear speakers, plus height channels on paper—substantially more hardware than a standalone bar.
That review designation does not establish a current price, stock status or best value in every country. Before purchasing, verify the exact regional model number, included accessories, warranty and return policy. Confirm that the satellites can be placed behind your seating position and that the subwoofer has a practical location. A 5.1.4 system that cannot be positioned as intended may deliver less benefit than a simpler bar that fits your room.
How to treat the pick
- Use it as a starting point for a shortlist, not as an automatic recommendation.
- Check the television’s ARC/eARC capability and the bar’s input and output labels before ordering.
- Look up passthrough support for 4K/120Hz and VRR if the PS5 will connect to the bar first.
- Price the entire package locally; the available evidence does not provide a universal current price.
Choose the connection route before choosing the bar
PlayStation’s official guidance says players can use the PS5 HDMI OUT port to connect to a TV or sound system. In practice, there are two useful layouts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Route A: PS5 to TV, TV to soundbar
Connect the PS5 to a TV input that supports the resolution and refresh rate you use. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the television’s HDMI ARC or eARC port. The TV returns audio from the console to the bar. This arrangement keeps the console’s video signal away from the soundbar’s passthrough circuitry, which is often the safest approach for 4K/120Hz and VRR gaming.
The TV must support the required audio return path, and its audio settings must be configured to send sound to the external device. ARC and eARC are not interchangeable in every capability: eARC generally provides a higher-bandwidth path, while standard ARC can be more restrictive depending on the TV, bar and format. Read both manuals for the exact supported combinations.

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Route B: PS5 to soundbar, soundbar to TV
Connect the PS5 to an HDMI input on the bar and the bar’s HDMI output to the TV. This can be convenient when the bar provides the audio formats or switching features you want, but it makes the bar part of the video chain. Verify the model’s specifications for 4K/120Hz, VRR and any other feature you use. A bar that passes 4K/60Hz may still fail your requirements if the console and display are configured for 120Hz gaming.
Do not infer passthrough capability from an HDMI connector count or from a general “4K” label. The relevant question is whether the exact input and output path supports your signal’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode and variable-refresh behavior simultaneously.
Why 4K/120Hz and VRR are separate from sound quality
Sony documents PS5 support for HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120Hz when paired with a compatible display. RTINGS’ connectivity testing specifically checks behavior such as 4K/120Hz passthrough and HDMI Forum VRR. These are video-path capabilities, not measures of how clear dialogue or powerful bass will sound.
Use this decision rule:
- If the PS5 connects directly to a compatible TV input, the soundbar mainly needs a reliable ARC/eARC audio connection. Its passthrough limitations may not matter.
- If the PS5 connects to the soundbar first, verify 4K/120Hz and VRR support for the exact ports and signal modes you plan to use.
- If the bar cannot pass your required video signal, keep Route A or use another HDMI input on the TV.
Low-cost products often involve compromises in connectivity and passthrough. That observation describes the price band in the roundup; it does not mean every model under $200 has identical limitations.
Audio formats and PS5 spatial sound
Format logos are useful compatibility clues, but they do not guarantee a particular spatial impression. Room dimensions, speaker placement, listening position, processing modes and the connection route all affect what you hear.

Console and game audio
Sony’s PS5 audio settings allow you to select the output device, HDMI device type and an Audio Format (Priority). The options shown can vary with the connected equipment and its settings. An AV-amplifier device type exposes additional controls such as channel count and speaker positions; a soundbar may present a different set of choices.

Sony’s official FAQ describes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray disc video when the console is connected to a supported device. The same material lists maximum channel counts for other supported formats, including Dolby Digital at 5.1 channels and Dolby Digital Plus at 7.1 channels. Treat those figures as format capabilities, not a promise that a particular bar will reproduce every mix in the same way.
Tempest 3D AudioTech and HDMI Dolby Atmos devices
Sony has also stated that Tempest 3D AudioTech can be output over compatible HDMI Dolby Atmos devices. “Compatible” is the important word: the console, television or soundbar, selected output format and content all have to align. A product that carries an Atmos logo is not automatically equivalent to a full speaker system in height or rear imaging.
Standalone bar or a full package?
| System layout | What you gain | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone soundbar | Simple placement, fewer cables and usually the lowest total cost. | Whether bass, dialogue clarity and surround width are sufficient for your room; optional subwoofer availability. |
| Bar with subwoofer | More convincing low-frequency effects for games and films without rear-speaker placement. | Subwoofer location, wireless pairing procedure and total package price. |
| Bar with subwoofer and satellite speakers | Physical rear channels and a more enveloping surround layout. | Space behind the seating position, power outlets for satellites, wireless reliability and cable management. |
| 5.1.4-style package | A 5.1.4-channel design such as the reported AX5140Q configuration adds rear and height channels to the package. | Ceiling height and room shape, placement angles, supported formats and whether the television can deliver the desired audio path. |
Choose the system you can place correctly. A smaller room with a sofa against the rear wall may not benefit from satellites that cannot sit behind the listener. In an open-plan room, reflections and seating distance can make height effects less distinct than the specification suggests.
Buying checklist for a PS5 soundbar
1. Confirm every component in the box
- Soundbar, subwoofer and satellite speakers, if the listing claims them.
- Power cables and remote control.
- Wall-mount hardware only if you need it; do not assume it is included.
- HDMI cable type and length, especially when the bar will connect to an ARC/eARC port.
2. Map your HDMI ports
Identify the TV’s gaming-capable HDMI input, its ARC/eARC socket and the soundbar’s HDMI input and output. Write down which device will occupy each port. This prevents buying a bar that requires an input your TV does not have or accidentally placing the console on a port that cannot deliver your chosen 4K/120Hz mode.

3. Match passthrough to your gaming settings
Check the manufacturer’s exact specification for 4K/120Hz and VRR passthrough, not just “4K support.” If you use HDR, confirm the supported HDR formats and whether they can pass through at the same refresh rate. When no clear specification is available, use the PS5-to-TV route instead of assuming compatibility.
4. Check audio-return support
For a PS5 connected to the TV, verify that the bar accepts ARC or eARC and that the television can return the formats you intend to use. Some televisions limit external audio when a particular digital-output mode is selected. The TV manual is the authority for those combinations.
5. Budget for placement, not only hardware
Reserve space under or in front of the TV, a stable location for the subwoofer and, for a surround package, positions beside or behind the seating area. Include the cost of stands, longer cables or wall mounting only when you actually need them. The available market evidence does not establish a single “best” local price.
PS5 setup: exact settings path
Once the wiring is complete, configure the console before judging the sound.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Under output device, select the HDMI-connected sound system or the TV path you are using. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says the output should be set to an HDMI device when appropriate.
- Set the HDMI device type to match the equipment presented by the console. If the interface offers AV-amplifier controls, enter the channel count and speaker positions that match your installed system.
- Open Audio Format (Priority) and choose a format supported by the connected TV and soundbar. Available options can change when the device or connection changes.
- On the television, select the HDMI ARC/eARC port for the soundbar and enable its external-speaker or audio-return setting. The exact label differs by television manufacturer.
- On the soundbar, select the HDMI ARC/eARC input or source. Disable a muted or inactive source before testing.
- Play a game with dialogue, music and effects, then test a disc or streaming source separately. Different content can use different formats and reveal a connection limitation that a menu sound does not.
- If you use Route B, enable the TV’s highest gaming mode only after confirming the bar passes the required signal. If the picture drops to a lower refresh rate or VRR disappears, move the PS5 to the TV and use ARC/eARC.
Placement and calibration that matter in a small room
Soundbar position
Place the bar centered under the display, with its front unobstructed. Do not push it deep inside a cabinet or cover upward-firing drivers with a shelf. If wall mounting, keep the bar aligned with the screen and follow the manufacturer’s clearance guidance.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Subwoofer position
Start near the front of the room, then move it if bass is boomy at the sofa or weak where you sit. Avoid trapping it tightly in a corner unless the resulting response is acceptable. Wireless does not mean location is irrelevant; the subwoofer still needs power and a reliable link to the bar.
Satellite position
Place left and right satellites to the sides or slightly behind the main seating position, at roughly ear height where practical. Keep them symmetrical. Do not place both speakers in front and expect the system to create the same rear image.
Listening modes
Begin with the bar’s standard or direct mode so you can hear the intended mix. Compare a surround or cinema mode only after levels are balanced. Virtualization can widen a front stage, but it cannot reproduce the physical separation of correctly placed rear speakers.

Troubleshooting: work from the signal path
No sound at all
- Check mute and volume on the TV, soundbar and PS5.
- Return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm the output device is the intended HDMI device.
- Confirm the soundbar is on the correct HDMI ARC/eARC source.
- Reseat both HDMI connectors and try a known-good cable.
- Power-cycle the PS5, TV and bar, then test again.
- Check for firmware updates on the connected devices, as Sony includes cable and device-firmware checks in its troubleshooting guidance.
Picture works but audio does not
This usually means the video route is active while the audio-return setting is not. Confirm that the cable from the bar goes to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, not an ordinary HDMI input. Enable external audio output on the TV and select the bar’s ARC/eARC source. If the TV offers several digital-audio modes, try the mode documented for your bar before changing PS5 formats.
Audio works but 4K/120Hz or VRR is missing
Temporarily bypass the bar: connect the PS5 directly to the TV’s compatible gaming input and leave the bar on ARC/eARC. If the high-refresh or variable-refresh option returns, the bar’s passthrough path is the limiting component or the selected port/cable is not capable of the desired mode. Keep the direct-to-TV layout unless the exact bar specification confirms a solution.
Surround speakers are silent
Check that each satellite is powered, paired and assigned to the correct side. Remove obstructions and move the units closer temporarily to test the wireless link. Use content with a clear surround mix; menu sounds and some stereo sources may not activate every channel.
Speech is hard to understand
Center the bar, lower excessive bass or surround enhancement and try a dialogue or night mode if the system provides one. Also check the source mix: a stereo stream and a multichannel game can sound different even when the wiring is unchanged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Prioritize video compatibility. If 4K/120Hz or VRR is essential, plan PS5-to-TV wiring first and treat passthrough as optional.
- Choose the physical layout. Select a standalone bar when simplicity and space dominate; select a subwoofer or satellites only when you can place them properly.
- Verify the audio return. Match the TV’s ARC/eARC capability to the bar and the formats you intend to use.
- Compare complete local cost. Include every speaker, cable or mount you need, plus taxes and current discounts.
- Validate the exact regional model. Names, included accessories, firmware and port specifications can vary by market.
- Buy with a return path. A room can expose bass, dialogue or wireless-placement problems that a specification sheet cannot predict.
Bottom line for a budget PS5 setup
The Hisense AX5140Q is the clearest current shortlist starting point because RTINGS’ October 6, 2026 roundup identifies its 5.1.4-channel subwoofer-and-wireless-satellite package as its best budget soundbar. Treat that as a reviewer pick, then verify local price, stock, room fit and connection details. For most PS5 owners, direct console-to-TV video with ARC/eARC audio to the bar is the low-risk wiring plan. Route the console through the bar only after confirming 4K/120Hz, VRR and the required HDR behavior for the exact ports you will use.
