For a US budget of less than $500, the Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02 is the strongest starting point for a room with some ambient light; the NexiGo PJ40 Pro is a better fit for a fully dark movie room. For gaming features, look at the XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K, while the Elfin Flip Laser and portable Vibe One suit narrower needs. These are use-case picks, not a verified price-ranked list: check current prices and availability before buying, since both can change.

The comparisons below are based on RTINGS’ under-$500 projector guide and budget and inexpensive projector guide, not hands-on testing for this article. The under-$500 scope is a working US-market boundary; confirm that each model still fits it where you shop.

Which budget projector should you start with?

Model Best fit Key trade-off
Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02 Rooms with some ambient light Weak contrast, gray-looking blacks in dark scenes, and high input lag
NexiGo PJ40 Pro Movies in a fully dark room Much dimmer than the Epson; ambient light washes out the image more
XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K Gaming features and pixel-shifted 4K Not bright enough for well-lit spaces
XGIMI Elfin Flip Laser Standard-throw 1080p viewing and casual gaming Limited to 60 Hz, with no VRR
XGIMI Vibe One Portable, occasional viewing Very dim and muted; best reserved for dark spaces

RTINGS’ comparison says the CO-FH02 is the only model in its cheap-projector list bright enough to handle ambient lighting without severe washout. Brightness should therefore be the first filter if you cannot darken the room; features such as portability and contrast matter more once you have control of the light.

What each projector does well—and where it falls short

Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02: brighter-room pick

RTINGS names the CO-FH02 its best projector under $500. It reports a sharp-enough 1080p picture, natural out-of-box color, and brightness suited to a living room, basement, or occasional backyard viewing after sunset. An Android TV dongle is included. Its weak contrast can make dark scenes look gray, its input lag is high for gaming, and its setup is less automatic than models with fuller auto-setup. This is the sensible choice when room light matters more than black levels or gaming responsiveness.

Supports 4K input from compatible HDMI-connected devices for added versatility.
  • [TOF 2s Auto Focus & Auto Keystone, No Screen Interruption | 50%-100% Zoom] Unlike traditional focus systems that require repeated manual adjustment, TOF-powered auto focus measures distance in real time and completes focusing in about 2 seconds. The image remains continuously displayed during the focusing process, so you can keep watching without a distracting blank or interrupted screen. Auto vertical keystone correction helps maintain a rectangular image, while 50%-100% zoom lets you adjust screen size without moving the movie projector.
  • [270° Adjustable Metal Stand | Ceiling & Multi-Angle Projection] The integrated metal stand rotates up to 270°, giving you flexible projection from different positions. Easily adjust the viewing angle for walls, tables, bedrooms, living rooms, offices, or ceiling projection. The sturdy metal hinge provides stable positioning while keeping the compact mini projector easy to move and set up.
  • [WiFi 6 & Two-Way Bluetooth 5.2 | Wireless Entertainment] WiFi 6 provides fast and stable wireless connectivity for streaming and screen mirroring. Connect compatible iPhone, iPad, Android devices, laptops, TV sticks, Roku devices, USB drives, Nintendo Switch, and PS5 through supported connections. Two-way Bluetooth 5.2 lets the wifi projector work as a Bluetooth speaker or connect to headphones, speakers, and soundbars. Bluetooth supports audio transmission, not video.

NexiGo PJ40 Pro: dark-room movie alternative

For a fully dark room, RTINGS favors the PJ40 Pro over the Epson for contrast: its deeper blacks give movies more depth. It is much dimmer, however, and is a worse choice when ambient light cannot be controlled. Choose it for dark-room viewing rather than expecting it to serve as an all-purpose living-room projector.

XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K: gaming-capable, but not a bright-room solution

The Elfin Flip 4K uses pixel shifting for 4K resolution; do not confuse that with native 4K. RTINGS describes support for 4K at 60 Hz and 1080p at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), low input lag, and portability. Those gaming modes make it the more capable option here for users who value refresh rate and responsiveness, but its brightness is not suited to a well-lit room.

XGIMI Elfin Flip Laser: simpler 1080p option

The Elfin Flip Laser is the standard-throw 1080p alternative for buyers who do not need the Flip 4K’s resolution or gaming performance. It is limited to 60 Hz and does not support VRR, so its gaming fit is casual rather than performance-oriented. Consider it when 1080p is sufficient and the higher refresh-rate features are not a priority.

XGIMI Vibe One: portable viewing

The Vibe One’s small size, built-in battery, Google TV, autofocus, and automatic keystone correction make it the portability pick. Its image is very dim and muted, so it is best for occasional viewing in dark spaces—not as a replacement for a brighter projector in a room with lights on.

How to choose for your room and use

If you will watch with lights on

Start with the CO-FH02. Among these picks, it has the strongest support for handling ambient light. If you cannot darken the room, a dimmer projector’s contrast or portability advantage will not compensate for a washed-out image.

If movies and dark scenes matter most

Choose the PJ40 Pro when you can make the room fully dark and want deeper blacks than the Epson provides. If you cannot control room light, favor brightness instead of selecting on contrast alone.

The Elfin Flip Laser is a 60 Hz, no-VRR casual option; RTINGS describes the Epson’s input lag as high.

If you need to carry it or set it up quickly

The Vibe One combines a battery and compact size with autofocus and automatic keystone correction. Treat that convenience as a trade-off: its dim, muted picture is better suited to dark, occasional viewing than to a bright main room.

Check price, availability, and resolution before buying

The five models are category-based recommendations, not a confirmed ranking by current price. RTINGS says price and availability factor into its recommendations; its July 2026 update also notes that earlier picks changed after products went out of stock or became too expensive. Retail listings can move, and the available evidence does not verify live prices for each model. Check the retailer’s current price and stock in your market, and confirm the model remains under your budget.

Read resolution labels carefully. The CO-FH02 and Elfin Flip Laser are listed as 1080p; the Elfin Flip 4K’s 4K resolution is pixel-shifted. For games, verify the mode you intend to use: the Flip 4K’s stated 120 Hz support is at 1080p, not 4K.

Brightness claims can also be difficult to compare across product listings. ScreenPerch’s August 18, 2026, under-$500 comparison describes measuring screen brightness and color and cautions against treating box claims as measured performance. Its testing was not used to rank these five models, so it does not establish which of them is brightest.
