The best budget handheld depends on what you mean by multiplayer. If two people will use separate handhelds, Wi‑Fi and emulator link support matter most. If two people will sit at a television, HDMI output and support for two external controllers matter more. For a general under-$100 starting point, the Anbernic RG35XX Plus is the broadest option in the April 21, 2026 Handheld Index comparison; choose the RG35XX SP for a protective clamshell, the Miyoo Mini Plus for maximum compactness, or the Trimui Smart Pro for its larger 16:9 display and dual analog sticks.
None of those features proves that a specific game will support multiplayer on a particular emulator. Confirm the exact game, emulator, operating system, model SKU, accessories and connection method before buying.
Decide which kind of multiplayer you need
“Multiplayer handheld” can describe several very different setups. Identify yours first, because a device that is excellent for one setup may be unsuitable for another.
Two handhelds playing together
Each player has a device and both join the same local network or emulator link session. You need compatible Wi‑Fi hardware, an emulator that implements the relevant link or netplay feature, and a game that supports that mode. A product page saying “Wi‑Fi” does not establish compatibility with your particular title.

One handheld connected to a TV
Both players use the same handheld, television and external controllers. HDMI output is essential, and you must verify how many controllers the operating system and emulator can recognize. This is a different requirement from two handhelds communicating wirelessly.
One handheld passed between players
Turn-based games and titles designed for pass-and-play can work without networking. Any of the four short-listed models may be adequate if the screen and controls suit you, but this is not simultaneous multiplayer.
Streaming or projection from a more capable device
Some higher-priced Android handhelds advertise streaming, wireless projection or display output. These features can broaden your options, but they add cost and still do not guarantee that a game or emulator will accept multiple players.

Shortlist: what each budget model is for
The April 21, 2026 Handheld Index comparison places four candidates below the $100 class. Its typical AliExpress prices were under $75 for all four when the comparison was made. Those are source-specific snapshots, not live prices for Amazon, another retailer or your local market.
| Model | Best fit | Screen | Wi‑Fi | TV output | Analog sticks | Screen protection | Stated MSRP in comparison |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anbernic RG35XX Plus | Broad all-rounder | 3.5-inch, 640×480, 4:3 | Listed; band details vary by model | HDMI output listed | Not listed | Not stated | $60 |
| Anbernic RG35XX SP | Portable clamshell | 3.5-inch, 640×480, 4:3 | Listed; band details vary by model | HDMI output listed | Not listed | Clamshell protects the screen when closed | $64.99 |
| Miyoo Mini Plus | Compact vertical handheld | 3.5-inch, 640×480, 4:3 | Listed; band details vary by model | Not listed | Not listed | Not stated | $50 |
| Trimui Smart Pro | Large-screen play and dual-stick controls | 4.96-inch, 1280×720, 16:9 | Listed; band details vary by model | Not listed | Dual analog sticks | Not stated | $69.99 |
The comparison’s Wi‑Fi column confirms that all four were listed with Wi‑Fi, but it does not make every band or multiplayer protocol identical. Treat the HDMI, display and control entries as hardware features, not as proof that a particular game will link successfully.
Best overall starting point: Anbernic RG35XX Plus
The RG35XX Plus is the most balanced choice in the cited comparison. Its 3.5-inch 640×480 4:3 screen suits the older systems commonly displayed in that shape, while HDMI output gives you a route to a television. Stereo speakers are also listed. That combination makes it the strongest first candidate when your household may alternate between portable play and a TV setup.
There are two important qualifications. First, the comparison does not establish which games or emulators support multiplayer. Second, Anbernic’s official catalog describes the RG 35 family as supporting an external Wi‑Fi module for online multiplayer and wired-controller compatibility. Do not assume that every RG35-series SKU has identical built-in wireless hardware or that an accessory is included. Check the exact RG35XX Plus listing, included items and revision before ordering.

Choose it when
- You want HDMI as an option but still want a small 4:3 handheld.
- You are willing to verify controller support and, if necessary, obtain the correct Wi‑Fi accessory.
- You prefer the comparison’s all-rounder positioning over a specialist form factor.
Check before purchase
- Whether the exact SKU includes Wi‑Fi or requires the external module described in Anbernic’s catalog.
- Which HDMI cable or adapter is required and whether your intended controllers work through the device.
- Whether your games’ emulators expose the multiplayer mode you need.
Best for protecting the screen: Anbernic RG35XX SP
The RG35XX SP uses the same listed 3.5-inch 640×480 4:3 resolution as the RG35XX Plus, but its clamshell design closes over the display. That is valuable if the handheld will travel in a pocket or bag, or if children will share it. The comparison also lists HDMI output and Wi‑Fi.
Its hinge changes the practical experience rather than automatically improving multiplayer. A closed clamshell is easier to carry, but you still need to open it for a wireless session or a TV setup. As with the Plus, verify the specific wireless implementation and included accessories because Anbernic’s catalog wording refers to an external Wi‑Fi module for the RG 35 family.
Choose it when
- Screen protection and compact storage are more important than the largest display.
- You want the same 4:3 class of screen and HDMI option represented in the comparison.
- You will carry the device frequently and do not want a separate protective case.
Best compact vertical option: Miyoo Mini Plus
The Miyoo Mini Plus is the smallest-feeling choice in this group according to the comparison’s positioning. It has a 3.5-inch 640×480 4:3 display and listed Wi‑Fi, making it attractive for solo retro play and for experiments with supported wireless features. The comparison does not list HDMI output, so it is not the natural pick for a TV-and-two-controllers arrangement.

Storage expansion is identified for the Miyoo device in the comparison and buyer-guide material. Confirm the exact card type and supported capacity for the current bundle. A quality, correctly formatted card is preferable to treating the included card, if any, as a permanent archive.
Choose it when
- You value a small vertical handheld above TV connectivity.
- Your multiplayer plan is wireless and your chosen emulator explicitly supports it.
- You want to spend near the comparison’s stated $50 MSRP, while recognizing that checkout prices vary.
Best for a large screen and two analog sticks: Trimui Smart Pro
The Trimui Smart Pro is the outlier in the shortlist: a 4.96-inch 1280×720 16:9 display and dual analog sticks. The wider, higher-resolution screen can be easier to share during local play and better suited to games designed around analog movement. The comparison lists Wi‑Fi but not HDMI output.
Do not infer that the extra sticks make every multiplayer game better. They matter only when the game and emulator use analog input, and the comparison does not establish compatibility for a specific title. Likewise, a 16:9 panel may show unused space around 4:3 games unless the emulator offers a suitable scaling mode.
Choose it when
- You prefer a larger screen for menus, shared viewing or widescreen systems.
- You specifically need dual analog sticks.
- You can live without a listed HDMI connection or have confirmed another display method for your setup.
How to compare the four for multiplayer
Wireless link or netplay
Start with the game and emulator, not the marketing label. Ask the emulator’s documentation whether it supports local wireless, LAN play or internet netplay; then check whether that implementation runs on the handheld’s operating system. Pairing two devices may require both to use the same emulator build, game file, region and settings.

Anbernic’s catalog separately mentions an external Wi‑Fi module for RG 35 devices. These facts are not interchangeable: a listing can say Wi‑Fi while a particular SKU, accessory or emulator has limitations. Record the exact model number and included module when you compare sellers.

TV multiplayer
Only the two Anbernic models in this four-device comparison have HDMI output listed. That makes them the logical candidates for a television setup, but HDMI alone carries only the picture and sound. You still need compatible wired or wireless controllers and an emulator that maps player two correctly.
Before buying, confirm:
- The handheld outputs a usable signal to your television at the intended resolution.
- The cable or adapter is included or available for the exact port.
- The operating system recognizes two controllers simultaneously.
- Your emulator offers separate player-one and player-two bindings.
Pass-and-play
If your games are turn-based, the display and controls may outweigh networking. A 4:3 3.5-inch screen is more faithful to many older games, while the Trimui Smart Pro’s 4.96-inch panel is physically larger. Pick the form factor that lets both players read the screen comfortably.
Screen, controls and portability trade-offs
| Priority | Most suitable candidate from the comparison | Reason | What remains unproven |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced portable and TV use | RG35XX Plus | 4:3 screen, HDMI listed, stereo speakers listed | Game and emulator multiplayer compatibility |
| Screen protection while traveling | RG35XX SP | Clamshell closes over the display; HDMI listed | Wireless accessory and controller details for your SKU |
| Small vertical body | Miyoo Mini Plus | Compact positioning and 4:3 display | No HDMI listed; exact wireless support for your chosen software |
| Large display and analog control | Trimui Smart Pro | 4.96-inch 16:9 panel and dual analog sticks | No HDMI listed; game-specific support |
Price and total-cost planning
The Handheld Index comparison reports these stated MSRPs: $60 for the RG35XX Plus, $64.99 for the RG35XX SP, $50 for the Miyoo Mini Plus and $69.99 for the Trimui Smart Pro. It also reports typical AliExpress prices under $75 for all four. Those figures were snapshots in that comparison, not guarantees of current checkout prices, taxes, shipping, seller quality or returns.
Budget for the complete setup rather than the shell alone. Possible additions include:
- A compatible microSD/TF card where the model supports expansion. Verify card type and maximum capacity for the exact device.
- An HDMI cable or adapter for the RG35XX Plus or RG35XX SP TV setup.
- External Wi‑Fi hardware if your RG35-series SKU requires the module described in Anbernic’s catalog.
- Two compatible controllers for TV multiplayer.
- A protective case or screen protector for models without a closing shell.
When checking a marketplace listing, compare the model revision, included accessories, seller return policy, shipping destination and warranty terms. A lower headline price can cease to be a bargain once the required module, cable, card and controllers are added.
Setup checklist for two-handheld multiplayer
- Define the mode. Label your intended session as local wireless, emulator netplay, online play, or pass-and-play.
- Verify the game. Look for an in-game multiplayer or link option and confirm the number of players.
- Verify the emulator. Check its documentation for the same mode on the operating system used by your handheld.
- Match software. Use the same game region, ROM revision, emulator version and relevant settings on both devices unless the emulator explicitly supports mixed versions.
- Check hardware. Confirm Wi‑Fi is present or that the required external module is included and supported by the exact SKU.
- Join one network. Put both handhelds on the same local network when the emulator requires LAN discovery. Disable client isolation on a router if it prevents devices from seeing one another.
- Configure player roles. Assign separate input profiles and test each player’s buttons before launching a match.
- Test a short session. Play for several minutes, checking latency, disconnects, battery drain and whether saving works correctly.
If discovery fails, first confirm that both devices are on the same network and that the emulator’s multiplayer mode is enabled. If the game connects but desynchronizes, match versions and settings before blaming the handheld. If no link option exists in the emulator, Wi‑Fi hardware cannot create one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup checklist for TV multiplayer
- Use a model with listed HDMI output. In this comparison, that means the RG35XX Plus or RG35XX SP.
- Connect the display. Use the correct HDMI cable or adapter for the handheld’s port and select the television’s matching input.
- Connect controllers. Test each controller individually, then verify that the operating system exposes both at once.
- Map inputs in the emulator. Assign player one and player two separately; do not assume the second controller will be mapped automatically.
- Launch a confirmed multiplayer title. Test with a game whose local multiplayer mode is documented for that emulator.
- Check power and heat. A long TV session can consume battery faster than portable play, so use an appropriate power source and keep ventilation clear.
Higher-budget option worth investigating: Anbernic RG476H
If “budget” can stretch well beyond the four sub-$100 candidates, Anbernic’s official RG476H page lists a more capable specification set. It advertises Android 13, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, TF-card expansion up to 2TB, 2.4/5 GHz Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, online multiplayer, streaming, wireless projection and USB‑C 1080p display output. Its listed display is 4.7 inches at 1280×960 with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, and the battery is 5,000mAh with a stated six-hour battery life.
The page showed a $189.99 sale price and $199.99 regular price when accessed; those prices are volatile and should not be treated as current. These advertised capabilities make the RG476H a candidate for readers who need Android applications, wireless accessories or projection, not a substitute for checking game and emulator compatibility. It is several times the stated MSRP of the four budget models, so include it only when its additional hardware addresses a specific requirement.

Common buying mistakes
Assuming Wi‑Fi equals multiplayer
Wi‑Fi is a transport, not a guarantee of link play. Confirm the game, emulator and operating-system combination.
Assuming all RG35 models are identical
Anbernic’s catalog wording about an external Wi‑Fi module applies to the RG 35 family generally. Confirm the RG35XX Plus or RG35XX SP SKU, revision and included accessories.
Choosing by MSRP alone

Ignoring aspect ratio
The three 3.5-inch models use 4:3 640×480 screens; the Trimui Smart Pro uses a 16:9 1280×720 screen. A wider panel is not automatically better for games designed around 4:3, while a 4:3 panel may feel cramped for widescreen software.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the RG35XX Plus when you want the most balanced feature set in this comparison and may use a TV. Choose the RG35XX SP when a clamshell that protects the screen is the deciding factor. Choose the Miyoo Mini Plus when compact vertical portability matters more than HDMI. Choose the Trimui Smart Pro when a large 16:9 display and dual analog sticks are central to your games.
For two separate handhelds, make emulator and game compatibility your first purchase check, then verify the exact wireless hardware. For one handheld at a television, start with HDMI and controller support. Recheck seller, variant, accessories, return terms and current price immediately before ordering.
