There is no single best extension for every study workflow. Choose a tool by the action you need: durable highlighting and export, fast summaries, flashcards and quizzes for recall, or research-paper screening. Web Highlighter is the broadest Chrome option for annotation and export; NoteSnap AI is the Firefox-focused choice for highlight-to-flashcard workflows; Scholarcy is aimed at papers; and StudyPilot is an experimental, developer-installed Chrome option built around on-device AI. Check page compatibility, permissions, and export requirements before making one part of your routine.
Which extension fits your study task?
The products below solve different problems rather than competing on one common score. A summary can help you orient yourself, but it is not the same as a set of notes you can search later or questions you can answer from memory. Use this quick map before reading the detailed profiles.

What “turning a web page into study material” actually involves
A useful workflow has three stages: capture, transform and review. Capture means selecting the passages, page or paper that matters. Transform means creating a summary, explanation, flashcards, quiz or other representation. Review means keeping the result somewhere you can find it and using retrieval practice rather than merely rereading it.

A summarizer can give you a fast orientation but still require you to verify claims against the page. Flashcards and quizzes create a review loop, yet their quality depends on the selected text and the generated wording. Treat the output as a draft for study, not as an authoritative replacement for the source.

StudyPilot: on-device, page-grounded study generation
StudyPilot’s public developer repository describes a Chrome extension that creates section-aware summaries, flashcards, page-grounded question-and-answer responses, diagram explanations and exports. Its distinguishing design is the use of Chrome’s Built-in AI APIs on the device when those APIs are available; the repository says it does not use a remote AI-processing server in that mode.
This is not a normal one-click consumer-store installation. The documented setup uses Chrome’s developer mode and a “Load unpacked” installation. You need a recent Chrome build with the required Built-in AI APIs. The first use may initialize or download an on-device model, so allow time and local storage for that process.
StudyPilot is most suitable when you want several generated formats from one page and are comfortable with a technical setup. Its page-grounded question mode can keep prompts tied to the material you opened, while diagram explanations address visual elements that a plain text summary may miss. Markdown and PDF export are documented, which helps if you maintain notes outside the browser.
Compatibility is a real boundary. The repository warns that browser-internal pages, PDFs and some web applications may not expose readable text. A page that looks readable to you can still present its content through a viewer, canvas or protected application that an extension cannot access. Test the exact sites you use before depending on StudyPilot for a course.
NoteSnap AI: Firefox capture-to-recall workflow
Mozilla’s add-on listing for NoteSnap AI describes a selection-based workflow: highlight web text, then generate summaries, question-and-answer flashcards and quizzes. The listing names articles, PDFs, Wikipedia pages and lecture slides as examples. Study packs sync with notesnap.org for saving, review and sharing, so the service is designed to extend beyond the browser tab.
The listing showed version 1.1.1 and a June 29, 2026 update date when checked. It also displayed two users and no reviews at that time. Those figures describe the listing snapshot, not product quality or adoption. They should not be read as evidence that the add-on is mature, unreliable or widely used.

Firefox users should pay close attention to the permission description. The listing reports access to browser tabs and website data, and it records the developer’s declaration that the extension does not require data collection. A declaration is not an independent audit; review the current listing and privacy policy before selecting pages containing confidential, personal or restricted information.
Web Highlighter: the most complete annotation-and-export option
Web Highlighter’s Chrome listing centers on durable capture. You can select and save highlights, add notes, organize and search them, and generate summaries for a page or selected highlights. It also lists flashcard and quiz generation, allowing the same captured material to support both reference and recall.
Its export list is unusually practical for mixed study systems: Notion, Google Docs, Obsidian and Markdown are named in the listing. The developer describes local-first storage by default with optional cloud sync. “Local-first” is a product claim, not a guarantee that every feature processes every character locally. The store also discloses that the extension handles website content, so compare the permission and privacy details with the pages you plan to read.
The listing snapshot showed version 19.7.5, updated September 5, 2026, with 4.6 stars from 23 ratings. Ratings can help you spot recurring usability complaints, but they are not controlled tests of summary accuracy or retention. The tool is a strong starting point if your priority is building a searchable highlight archive and moving selected material into an existing notes application.
Scholarcy Browser Extension: research-paper triage
Scholarcy’s Chrome extension is aimed at articles and research papers. Its listing describes key-point summaries, interactive flashcards, highlighted important points, referenced summaries and a background reading list. It also mentions locating open-access PDFs and extracting figures and tables, which can reduce the friction of screening a paper before you decide whether to read it closely.

A paper that is paywalled or delivered through a restricted viewer may need to be opened in a different accessible copy.

The listing says premium Scholarcy Library subscribers can save, share, annotate and export summary flashcards. Confirm the current plan before designing a library around those functions. The snapshot showed version 5.4.0, updated March 14, 2026, with 4.0 stars from 39 ratings. Store disclosures include website content and location access. Location permission may be unrelated to the text-generation task, so ask whether the extension’s stated use matches your own privacy threshold.
The listing also contains a claim that the service can save up to 70% of the time needed to get key information from an article. No study details accompany that claim in the listing, so treat it as marketing language rather than an established performance statistic.
Studyflash: a broader study workspace, not a confirmed extension
Studyflash’s site describes an app that accepts supplied course material and produces summaries, flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, podcasts and practice exams. That breadth may appeal if you want one workspace for a whole course rather than a tool attached to each browser page.

The reviewed description does not establish that Studyflash is a browser extension, nor does it show that its outputs outperform the extensions above. Consider it only when you are willing to move material into a separate service and have verified its current browser integrations, import process, account requirements and privacy terms.
Choose by the output you will actually review
For a searchable evidence trail
Start with Web Highlighter if your main behavior is marking passages, adding your own context and finding those passages later. Its listed organization and search functions address the accumulation problem that a folder of unconnected summaries creates. Decide in advance whether your canonical copy will live locally, in optional cloud sync or in an exported notes application.
For rapid orientation on a long page
StudyPilot and Scholarcy both document page-level summarization, but their audiences differ. StudyPilot is a general page tool with section-aware output and page-grounded questions. Scholarcy is structured around article and research-paper key points, references, figures and tables. Choose based on the kind of reading you do, not on a generic promise that one summary is shorter.

For retrieval practice
NoteSnap AI, Web Highlighter and StudyPilot each document flashcard or quiz generation. The decisive question is where the source text comes from and how you will edit weak cards. Generate a small batch first, remove cards that test trivia or contain unsupported answers, and keep the original passage alongside each retained card.

For screening academic literature
Scholarcy is the most purpose-built option in this group because its listing calls out referenced summaries, open-access PDF discovery, figures and tables. It does not remove the need to read methods, limitations or cited sources. Use generated key points to decide what deserves close reading, then verify every conclusion in the paper.
Compatibility: test before building a routine
“Any web page” is not a sufficient compatibility promise. Extensions need a readable representation of the page, and browsers expose different content depending on how a site is built.
- Check the browser listing. Confirm that the extension is offered for your browser. StudyPilot’s documented path is Chrome developer mode; NoteSnap AI is listed for Firefox; Web Highlighter and Scholarcy are listed for Chrome.
- Test representative sources. Use one ordinary article, one PDF, one lecture slide or document viewer and one interactive web app that you actually study from. Do not infer PDF support for every extension from another product’s listing.
- Try a short selection first. Highlight a paragraph and request the smallest useful output. If the extension cannot see the selection, a full-page request is unlikely to solve the underlying access problem.
- Check the result against the page. Make sure headings, formulas, citations, tables and figure labels have not been lost before you save generated material.
- Record exceptions. If a site fails because it is browser-internal, protected, canvas-rendered or embedded in a viewer, keep a manual capture or use an accessible copy rather than repeatedly retrying.
Privacy and permissions for page-reading extensions
An extension that summarizes a page must be able to read some page content. That is a more sensitive permission than a tool that only changes the browser’s appearance. Before installation, open the current marketplace permissions panel and privacy policy.
- Tabs and website data: NoteSnap AI’s listing reports access to browser tabs and website data. Web Highlighter and Scholarcy disclose handling website content.
- Location: Scholarcy’s listing also discloses location access. Check the stated purpose and decide whether it is necessary for your use.
- Local processing: StudyPilot’s repository describes on-device processing through Chrome’s Built-in AI APIs when available. That is a developer description of its architecture, not an independent security audit.
- Collection declarations: NoteSnap’s listing records the developer’s declaration that the add-on does not require data collection. Treat store declarations and “local-first” language as claims to verify against current policies.
- Sensitive sources: Avoid sending confidential client material, private health information, examination questions or unpublished research to a service unless its terms and your organization’s policy explicitly permit it.
Permissions and disclosures can change with updates. Recheck them when an extension changes version, adds cloud sync or introduces an account-based feature.

A generated card that exists only inside a temporary tab is not a durable study asset. Decide what you need to retain before generating dozens of items.

These capabilities may depend on an account, subscription or current implementation. Perform one export early, open the resulting file in your destination app and confirm that headings, links, citations and card answers survived. Keep the original URL and date with the material so you can revisit a changed page.
A reliable page-to-study workflow
- Define the learning objective. Write one sentence such as “explain the mechanism,” “compare the two theories” or “recall the terminology.” This prevents a generic summary from replacing the work you actually need.
- Capture selectively. Highlight the definitions, evidence, examples and unresolved claims that support the objective. For a research paper, include the abstract, methods question, key result and limitations rather than only the introduction.
- Generate one transformation. Request a summary, explanation, flashcards or quiz—whichever matches the objective. Producing every available format at once creates review debt.
- Verify against the source. Check names, numbers, qualifications, negations, citations and table values. Remove any card whose answer cannot be located in the captured text.
- Edit for retrieval. Rewrite broad prompts into specific questions. A good card asks for one meaningful answer and includes enough context to make the question unambiguous.
- Export or sync immediately. Put the approved notes in the system you will revisit, and retain a source link or citation.
- Schedule review. Use the quiz or flashcards after a delay, then return to the page for errors and missing context. The extension creates material; your review routine determines whether it becomes knowledge.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The versions, dates, ratings, permissions and features above came from official marketplace listings or StudyPilot’s public repository as accessed October 13, 2026. They are time-sensitive: stores can change descriptions, permissions, ratings and plan limits. Verify the live listing before installation.
No independent head-to-head testing established that one extension produces more accurate summaries, better flashcards or stronger learning retention than another. Star ratings measure user reactions, not controlled learning outcomes. Product descriptions also do not prove that a generated answer is correct. The defensible comparison is therefore workflow fit, compatibility, privacy posture and portability—not a claim of an empirically proven winner.
Bottom line: select the smallest tool that completes your loop
Choose Web Highlighter when annotation, search and export are the center of your work. Choose NoteSnap AI when you study in Firefox and want selected passages converted into flashcards and quizzes. Choose Scholarcy when research-paper triage and referenced summaries matter most. Choose StudyPilot when you want page-grounded generation and are comfortable installing a Chrome developer build with on-device AI requirements.
