Best overall: choose Theater Mode for YouTube if you only want YouTube to open in its native Theater mode automatically. Choose Magic Actions for YouTube for exact player widths and aspect ratios, Enhancer for YouTube or Improve YouTube! for broad player and page controls, and BigTube for a focused full-sized theater view with a scrolling miniplayer.
YouTube already includes Theater mode and Miniplayer, so an extension is worthwhile only when you need persistence, precise sizing, page cleanup, pop-out behavior, or custom shortcuts. Install one extension from the browser’s official store, enable only the controls you need, and keep a rollback path because YouTube layout changes can make competing extensions interfere with one another.
Start with YouTube’s built-in Theater mode
On a computer, YouTube automatically adapts the video-player size to the available space in your browser window. Its native Theater mode enlarges the player across the page without entering browser full screen, while Miniplayer reduces the video to a small floating player so you can continue browsing.

Use the Theater mode button in the player controls when you want the official layout. You can also press T while the player is focused. Theater mode is different from full screen: the browser’s tabs and address bar remain visible, and the page can still show the title, description, comments, and recommendations below the player. Miniplayer is designed for browsing elsewhere on YouTube while playback continues.

An extension becomes useful when you want Theater mode to be applied on every visit, want a width other than YouTube’s default, need to hide page elements, or want a pop-out or pinned player. The choices below are based on the features described by each project or store listing; privacy and security statements attributed to publishers are claims rather than independent audits.

Which extension should you choose?
Choose Theater Mode for YouTube for one automatic behavior
This is the narrowest solution. It is aimed at viewers who like YouTube’s own Theater mode and simply do not want to click the Theater button on every visit. The Chrome Web Store listing says it enables the authentic mode by default, including for viewers who are not logged in, and reapplies it on later visits. The player’s T shortcut remains available.
There are no configuration panels or secondary page-cleaning features. That limitation is the point: fewer settings mean fewer opportunities to create a layout conflict. Select it when your requirement is “open YouTube in its normal large player every time,” not when you need an exact 75% width, hidden comments, or a custom pop-up.

Choose Magic Actions for exact width and aspect ratio
Magic Actions is the strongest fit when “large” is not precise enough. Its listed controls include an Auto Wide Player, theater widths expressed as percentages, a custom aspect ratio, and Full-Window mode. Those options let you match a player to an ultrawide monitor, a narrow laptop window, or a preferred video shape instead of accepting the width YouTube calculates.
It also separates page-cleaning controls from player sizing. You can hide comments, related recommendations, end screens, annotations, Shorts shelves, community posts, live chat, or the guide sidebar independently. This makes it suitable for a distraction-free viewing page, but enabling many switches at once can make troubleshooting harder.

The publisher says that settings are stored locally, no account is required, and processing stays on the device. Treat those as statements from the publisher: review the current store listing, requested permissions, update date, and privacy policy before installation.
Choose Enhancer for YouTube for the broadest everyday toolkit
Enhancer covers the common middle ground between a single-purpose theater switch and a highly granular settings suite. Its Wide Player can extend beyond YouTube’s standard Theater layout. Full-window viewing enlarges the page without invoking the browser’s full-screen API, and separate Mini Player and Pop-up Player modes provide alternatives when you want to browse while watching.

For page cleanup, it can hide recommendations, related videos, chat, comments, end screens, and info cards. Custom keyboard shortcuts reduce the need to open menus repeatedly. Mozilla has also highlighted the ability to pin the player while scrolling, expand descriptions, and reorder comments. Mozilla identified the extension as part of Firefox’s Recommended Extensions program, which is useful context for Firefox users but is not a guarantee that every current feature behaves identically in every browser version.
Choose Improve YouTube! for detailed controls and custom buttons
Improve YouTube! is designed for viewers who want to tune many parts of the watch page. Its listing describes theater or cinema mode, player resizing, full-window expansion, custom Mini and Pop-up players, and optional extra player buttons. It also lists fixed quality, custom keyboard shortcuts, and numerous playback controls.
Comments, the page header, and live chat can be hidden. The combination is useful if you want a consistent “video first” page but still want to decide exactly which controls appear in the player. More switches also mean more possible interactions with YouTube’s own experiments or another extension, so change one setting at a time and record the original state before making a large batch of changes.

The project says it has been independently developed since 2012 and is not affiliated with YouTube. Those are publisher statements, not independent audits of the code or its privacy behavior.
Choose BigTube for a focused theater and scrolling-player experience
BigTube concentrates on the viewing surface rather than offering an all-in-one preference center. Its listing describes a full-sized theater mode, a pop-out player, and a miniplayer that appears when you scroll so you can read comments while playback continues. It also describes support for newer YouTube grid layouts and migration to Manifest V3.
This is a good choice when you want a large player and a practical scroll-following miniplayer without turning every part of YouTube into a configurable dashboard. If you need separate switches for Shorts shelves, annotations, recommendations, and chat, use a broader extension instead.

Shortcuts and scrolling behavior
Theater Mode for YouTube preserves the familiar T shortcut. Enhancer and Improve YouTube! list custom keyboard shortcuts, allowing actions such as player resizing or mode changes to be mapped to keys you choose. Enhancer’s highlighted pin-while-scrolling behavior keeps the player visible as you move through a page. BigTube’s scrolling miniplayer serves a similar practical purpose, while leaving the comments area available for reading.

How to install and configure an extension safely
- Confirm that native Theater mode is insufficient. Open a video, select Theater mode, and test Miniplayer. If those modes solve the problem, an extension adds unnecessary maintenance and permissions.
- Use an official distribution channel. For Chrome-based browsers, use the official Chrome Web Store or the project’s official release page. For Firefox, use Firefox Add-ons or the project’s official release page. Avoid repackaged downloads from unrelated websites.
- Inspect the listing before installing. Check the publisher identity, requested permissions, update date, supported browser versions, and privacy policy. A feature list is not the same as a security audit.
- Install only one layout controller initially. Do not begin with two extensions that both force Theater mode, maximize the player, inject custom CSS, or create Mini and Pop-up players.
- Set a baseline. Open YouTube in a fresh tab, note the normal player width, and test a regular video, a live stream, a Shorts page, and a page with comments. This gives you a reference if a setting causes a problem.
- Enable one feature at a time. Start with Theater or Wide Player mode. Reload YouTube and test. Then add a cleanup option, such as hiding recommendations or comments, and test again.
- Record or export settings when available. Some extensions provide an export function; use it before major changes. If no export exists, save screenshots of the settings pages.
- Keep a rollback path. If the player becomes unstable, disable the extension from the browser’s Extensions page, reload YouTube, and remove or reset the setting that caused the conflict.
Browser compatibility and maintenance
Chromium-based extensions built for Chrome often also work in Microsoft Edge and other Chromium browsers such as Opera and Vivaldi. Compatibility is not automatic, however: check the current store listing and your browser version, especially after a browser update.
The YouTube-Enhancer project publishes artifacts for Chrome, Chromium, Edge, and Firefox. Its version 1.34.0 release, dated August 20, 2026, documents fixes for conflicts between automatic Theater mode and automatic player maximization, along with compatibility work for YouTube layout changes. That release history illustrates why maintenance matters: YouTube can change class names, page structure, player behavior, or navigation without warning.
Before relying on an extension for daily viewing, look at its recent update activity and issue history. A recently updated project is not automatically safer, but a long period without maintenance increases the chance that a YouTube redesign will break its layout hooks.

The player keeps switching between modes
Disable automatic Theater mode or automatic maximization in all but one extension. If the problem stops, re-enable the preferred extension and leave the competing mode disabled. Also test YouTube’s native Theater button with every extension disabled; this distinguishes an extension conflict from a YouTube account or browser issue.
The player is too wide or clipped
Undo custom width and aspect-ratio settings first. A percentage-based width that looks correct in a maximized desktop window may overflow a smaller laptop window. Restore the extension’s default width, resize the browser, and then choose a smaller percentage or a standard aspect ratio.

Comments or recommendations remain visible
Check whether the extension separates “comments,” “related videos,” “recommendations,” “end screens,” and “info cards.” Enable the specific switch for the element you want to remove. A player-only Theater mode does not necessarily hide page content below the player.
The miniplayer disappears while scrolling
Confirm that only one extension controls scrolling behavior. Test a standard watch page rather than a Shorts page or live-stream dashboard, because those layouts can use different page structures. If the behavior began after an update, disable the extension and check whether its listing reports a compatibility fix.
YouTube looks broken after installation
- Open the browser’s Extensions page and disable the newest YouTube-related extension.
- Reload the affected tab with a normal page refresh.
- Test YouTube in a private window where extensions are disabled by default, if your browser allows that comparison.
- Re-enable the extension with only its basic Theater or Wide Player feature.
- If the issue returns, leave it disabled and use YouTube’s native Theater mode until the publisher releases a compatible update.

Privacy and permissions checklist
Because these extensions modify YouTube pages, they may request permission to read or change site data on YouTube. That permission can be necessary for layout changes, but it deserves scrutiny.
- Install from the official Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, or the project’s official release page.
- Verify the publisher name and compare it with the project’s linked identity.
- Read the privacy policy instead of relying only on a short store summary.
- Prefer the smallest feature set that solves your problem.
- Review update dates after major YouTube redesigns.
- Remove extensions you no longer use, rather than leaving them enabled indefinitely.
Claims such as local storage, no account requirement, on-device processing, or independent development should be treated as publisher disclosures. They are useful signals, but they do not replace reviewing permissions and the current policy yourself.
Final recommendation
Start with YouTube’s built-in Theater mode if you only need a larger player. For automatic application with no settings, use Theater Mode for YouTube. For exact dimensions, choose Magic Actions. For an all-purpose player and page toolkit, choose Enhancer for YouTube; choose Improve YouTube! when you want even more granular playback and interface controls. Choose BigTube when a focused theater view and scrolling miniplayer matter more than a large settings suite.
Whichever option you choose, run one layout extension at a time, change settings incrementally, and check maintenance activity after YouTube changes its page design.
