For most people, start with uBlock Origin. Its curated filter lists and granular per-site controls provide the broadest general-purpose way to block advertising scripts, tracking requests, beacons, pop-ups, anti-blocker scripts and malware domains that can appear around video players. Choose Privacy Badger if you want automatic, behavior-based blocking with an emphasis on consent and fewer manually maintained rules. Choose Ghostery if seeing which companies are detected—and deciding whether to block them silently or report them—is your priority. Edge’s built-in Tracking prevention is a useful no-install option, but Microsoft’s documentation warns that its Strict setting can interfere with video playback or sign-in.

No extension can promise to stop every tracker on every video site. A player may depend on a third-party script, cookie, beacon or media request that also performs measurement or advertising. The practical goal is to reduce unnecessary third-party communication while keeping playback, captions, accounts and embeds working.

Quick answer: which extension should you use?

Best fit Recommended choice Why Main trade-off
Broad blocking and detailed controls uBlock Origin Uses curated lists, including EasyPrivacy by default, to filter ads, trackers, coin miners, pop-ups, anti-blockers and malware sites. A blocked request can occasionally be a dependency for a player, login flow or embedded widget; diagnosing exceptions takes some learning.
Automatic, consent-oriented anti-tracking Privacy Badger Uses behavioral detection rather than relying only on a fixed list and blocks advertisers or third-party trackers when their behavior meets its criteria. Some potentially useful video players and widgets can appear as click-to-activate placeholders.
Tracker visibility and configurable blocking Ghostery Can show detected trackers or block them in the background, giving you a visible inventory and configurable controls. Its policy and settings require careful review if you want to understand what information the extension processes and how reporting works.
No extension installation Edge Tracking prevention Built into the browser and available without adding an extension. Microsoft says Strict prevention can affect video playback or sign-in, and it does not block every tracker or advertisement.

There is no current apples-to-apples benchmark testing all three extensions on the same collection of video sites. The choices above describe each project’s documented mechanism and controls, not a laboratory ranking. Filter lists, browser support, store availability and site behavior change over time.

What a video tracker is—and what blocking it changes

A video page can load much more than the media stream. The page may request an analytics library, an advertising tag, a social-media pixel, a device or fingerprinting script, a cookie endpoint, a beacon sent when playback starts or stops, and a content-delivery or measurement request hosted by another company. Some requests are made by the page around the player; others are initiated by the player itself or by an embedded frame.

Tracking is different from advertising

An advertisement is a piece of promotional content. Tracking is the collection or transmission of information about a visit, device, account, playback event or interaction. An ad can be served without a particular third-party tracker, and a page can contain trackers even when no visible ad appears. Privacy Badger’s documented behavior illustrates the distinction: it does not block ads merely because they are ads; it blocks advertising or third-party content when that content tracks the user.

What an extension can actually stop

  • Network requests: a filter can prevent a known script, image, frame, cookie endpoint or beacon from loading.
  • Page elements: a rule can hide an ad slot, overlay or anti-blocker message after the page receives it.
  • Known domains and patterns: list-based tools can match hostnames and URL patterns maintained in filter lists.
  • Observed behavior: a heuristic tool can watch how a third party behaves across sites and restrict it when the behavior resembles tracking.

Blocking is not the same as erasing information that a site already collected, anonymizing an account you deliberately use, or preventing a first-party video service from knowing that your signed-in account played a video. It also cannot guarantee that an unfamiliar or newly created tracking endpoint will be recognized immediately.

Why playback can break

A third-party request can have two roles at once. The same script that reports a playback event may initialize a player, select a stream, load captions or validate a session. Microsoft specifically warns that Edge’s Strict tracking prevention can affect video playback or sign-in. Privacy Badger documents another compatibility behavior: potentially useful video players and widgets may be replaced by a placeholder that you activate with a click. These are not necessarily defects; they are consequences of refusing a request before the browser knows which part of the request is essential.

How the three extensions block trackers

uBlock Origin: curated lists with fine-grained control

uBlock Origin’s project README describes it as a broad content blocker for ads, trackers, coin miners, pop-ups, anti-blockers and malware sites. Its default configuration includes several lists, including EasyPrivacy. The list approach is explicit and inspectable: a matching rule can block a request, hide an element or apply a page-level exception.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

This is the strongest starting point when you want to decide exactly what happens on a particular video site. You can leave broad protection enabled globally, inspect what was blocked on the current page, and create a narrow exception for only the site or resource that needs it. The trade-off is that a large set of rules can make a broken player harder for a newcomer to diagnose. A temporary site-level relaxation is usually safer than turning off every list or adding a permanent global allow rule.

Privacy Badger: behavior-based and consent-oriented detection

Privacy Badger, described by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, looks for third-party behavior associated with tracking rather than treating every advertisement as something to remove. That distinction can preserve some non-tracking advertising while restricting companies that follow you across sites. Its approach is heuristic or algorithmic, unlike a conventional blocklist-only tool.

Privacy Badger also documents click-to-activate placeholders for potentially useful video players and other widgets. If a player is replaced by a placeholder, activating it tells the browser that you want that particular content to load. This can be a useful compromise for an embedded player you trust, but it adds an explicit step and may reveal a connection to the widget provider when activated.

Ghostery: visibility plus configurable blocking

Ghostery’s technical material places it among blocklist tools while emphasizing tracker visibility and user controls. The extension can show detected trackers or block them silently in the background. That makes it useful when you want to identify which companies a video page contacts before deciding how aggressively to intervene.

Ghostery’s policy describes the data it processes to operate the extension as non-personal, and its FAQ says that blocking a configured company interrupts that company’s communication from leaving the browser. Those are the vendor’s documented policy claims, not an independent audit. Read the extension’s current settings and policy, especially if reporting or product-improvement options are enabled, and choose the least data-sharing configuration that meets your needs.

Detailed comparison for video sites

Question uBlock Origin Privacy Badger Ghostery
Primary method Curated filter lists and matching rules. Heuristic or algorithmic detection based on observed third-party behavior. Blocklists with tracker identification and configurable actions.
Tracker visibility Detailed blocked-request and rule information in its interface. Shows decisions made for detected third parties, with less emphasis on a catalog of every tracker. Designed to show detected trackers or block them silently.
Per-site control Granular controls and site-level exceptions. Per-site behavior can be changed when a widget needs activation or an exception. Configurable blocking and reporting choices can be adjusted for a site.
Typical video compatibility issue A player script, media request or sign-in dependency may match a rule. A player or widget may become a click-to-activate placeholder. A blocked tracker may also provide a player or account dependency.
Privacy disclosure to review Review the extension’s current permissions and project documentation. Review the extension’s current permissions and EFF documentation. Review its current policy and reporting settings; its non-personal-data description is a vendor statement.
Best reason to choose it You want broad coverage and control over individual requests. You prefer automatic anti-tracking decisions and a consent-oriented model. You want to see who is tracking and choose how visible or silent blocking should be.

The table compares documented design choices. It does not claim that one extension blocks a higher percentage of trackers, loads pages faster or preserves more players in every browser.

Install safely and limit extension access

Install only from your browser’s official extension store or the project’s documented distribution channel, then inspect permissions before enabling the extension. Chrome lets you set an extension’s site access to On all sites, On specific sites or a selected-site arrangement. Start with the narrowest setting that covers the video sites you actually use. A work, school or other managed computer may prevent installation entirely because an administrator can block extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome permission path

  1. Open Chrome’s menu and choose Extensions, then Manage extensions.
  2. Find the installed blocker and open Details.
  3. Under site access, select the narrowest option that still includes your video sites: selected sites, specific sites or all sites.
  4. Return to the extension’s toolbar control and confirm that protection is active on the page you are testing.
  5. Revisit the permission screen after an update; browser labels and an extension’s requested permissions can change.

If your browser uses different labels, look for the extension’s site-access or permissions panel. Do not grant all-site access automatically when the extension can work with selected domains.

Set up each option for video tracking

uBlock Origin setup

  1. Install the extension and keep its default filter lists enabled initially. Those lists are the basis of its broad coverage, including the default privacy list.
  2. Open a video page and select the extension’s toolbar icon to inspect the page’s blocked activity and available controls.
  3. Play a short section, open captions if you need them, and test sign-in before changing anything. This establishes which feature is failing.
  4. If playback fails, use the extension’s page-level control to allow the minimum necessary access for that site, then reload and test again.
  5. If the player works after the exception, keep the exception limited to that domain rather than disabling protection globally.

Use this sequence because a broad “allow everywhere” setting hides the cause and permits unrelated trackers on every other site.

Privacy Badger setup

  1. Install the extension and let it observe normal browsing rather than immediately adding broad exceptions.
  2. On the video page, look for a blocked or replaced player. If the interface presents a click-to-activate placeholder, decide whether that particular widget is necessary.
  3. Activate only the widget you intend to use, then verify playback, captions and account functions.
  4. If the site remains unusable, adjust the site’s protection setting rather than changing behavior for every domain.
  5. After the video works, revisit the page in a new session to confirm that the exception did not silently expand to unrelated sites.

Ghostery setup

  1. Install the extension and open its settings before visiting sensitive sites. Review tracker display, blocking and any reporting or product-improvement choices.
  2. Open a video page and use the tracker panel to see which third parties are detected.
  3. Keep blocking enabled for parties that are not needed for playback, and change only the specific category or site setting associated with a broken feature.
  4. Reload the page and test the player, sign-in and any embedded content after each change.
  5. Read the current privacy policy when the extension updates, because policy language and controls are version-sensitive.

Troubleshoot a video that will not play

Change one thing at a time so you know which exception restored the feature. The following order minimizes the amount of tracking you re-enable.

  1. Confirm the scope of the failure. Try another video on the same site and, if appropriate, a different browser tab. If only one embed fails, the blocked dependency may be local to that player.
  2. Check the extension panel. Look for a blocked script, frame, media request or anti-blocker element loaded at the moment playback stopped.
  3. Reload after a single-site relaxation. Use the extension’s per-site control or the browser’s site-specific setting, then reload completely and test again.
  4. Test account functions separately. If playback works while sign-in does not, a cookie, authentication frame or third-party identity request may be the dependency. Microsoft documents this class of issue for Edge’s Strict tracking prevention.
  5. Handle placeholders explicitly. With Privacy Badger, click-to-activate the player only if you accept that the widget will contact its provider.
  6. Restore protection immediately after diagnosis. If the site works with a narrow exception, keep that exception. If it works only when all protection is disabled, remove unrelated exceptions and re-enable protection before trying another site.

Symptoms and likely causes

Symptom What it may indicate Least-invasive next step
Blank player or endless loading A player script, frame or media request matched a blocking rule. Allow the required site resource or relax protection for that site only, then reload.
Video plays but captions or quality selection fails A supporting request is blocked even though the main stream loads. Test the affected feature while inspecting newly blocked requests; add only the smallest exception.
Signed-in playback fails Authentication, cookie or identity communication is being restricted. Test the site’s account flow with a narrow site exception; do not disable protection globally.
A “disable your blocker” notice appears The site detected a blocked script or anti-blocker request. Check whether the notice is caused by one blocked dependency and allow only that site if you accept the trade-off.
Embedded video is replaced by a prompt Privacy Badger may have placed a click-to-activate placeholder. Activate that widget only when you want it, or adjust the site’s setting.

Built-in browser protection versus an extension

Edge’s Tracking prevention is the clearest no-install alternative covered here. Its Strict mode can restrict more third-party activity, but Microsoft’s guidance warns that it may affect video playback or sign-in and that tracking prevention does not block every tracker or advertisement. Use the browser setting when you want a simple baseline and can tolerate fewer controls. Add an extension when you need a visible per-request inventory, curated lists, behavioral detection or more precise site exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not stack several aggressive blockers without a reason. Multiple tools can apply overlapping rules, make a legitimate dependency harder to identify and produce conflicting site exceptions. If you use built-in protection and an extension together, begin with moderate settings and test the sites that matter to you.

Review what the extension can access

A tracker blocker generally needs to inspect page requests or content on the sites where it operates. That access is powerful: it can affect video pages, account screens and embedded frames. Chrome’s site-access controls let you limit where the extension runs. Narrow access reduces exposure but also means a site outside the selected list will not receive the same protection.

Separate blocking from reporting

Blocking determines whether a request leaves the browser. Reporting, diagnostics and product-improvement features can involve separate data flows. Ghostery’s policy describes the data used to operate the extension as non-personal, and its FAQ says that blocking a configured company stops that company’s communication from leaving the browser. Treat those statements as the provider’s policy description, check the current version’s settings, and disable optional reporting you do not need.

Remember first-party limits

A blocker may restrict third-party trackers while the video service itself still records your account activity, IP address, playback history or settings under its own policy. Blocking third parties does not make an authenticated session anonymous. For stronger privacy, combine the extension with sensible account settings, separate profiles for sensitive browsing and a browser configuration you understand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by your tolerance for control and breakage

  • Choose uBlock Origin if you want the broadest documented list-based coverage and are willing to learn site-level controls when a player breaks.
  • Choose Privacy Badger if you prefer automatic behavioral decisions and accept that a useful widget may need a deliberate click before it loads.
  • Choose Ghostery if tracker identification is central to your decision and you want configurable visible or silent blocking, while reviewing its policy and reporting settings.
  • Use Edge’s built-in protection if you want a baseline without an extension and can switch from Strict behavior when playback or sign-in is affected.

Whichever option you select, test the complete workflow you care about: start a video, seek, change quality, enable captions, open an embed and sign in. A page that loads is not necessarily a page whose player is fully functional.

Limits you should expect

Tracker blocking is an ongoing maintenance problem. Lists change, sites rename endpoints, browsers alter extension APIs and video platforms redesign players. A tool can miss a new tracker, block a legitimate dependency or require a new exception after an update. None of the documented projects promises universal blocking, and no current source establishes a single winner across all video sites.

That uncertainty is why per-site controls matter more than a permanent “maximum” setting. Keep protection enabled by default, identify the exact feature that fails, relax only the smallest necessary scope, and re-test after the site or extension updates.

Practical decision checklist

  • Do you want curated lists and the most granular controls? Start with uBlock Origin.
  • Do you want behavior-based decisions with less manual list management? Try Privacy Badger.
  • Do you want to see tracker names and choose visible or silent blocking? Try Ghostery.
  • Do you want no extension at all? Use the browser’s built-in protection, beginning with a setting that does not disrupt your essential sites.
  • Can you identify the site-specific control before installing? If not, learn where the extension’s toolbar panel and browser permission page are located.
  • Will you test sign-in, captions and embeds—not just the first video frame? Make that part of setup.
