Short answer: The JBL Boombox 4 is the strongest documented choice if you want a large, battery-powered speaker with a published battery rating, IP68 protection, Auracast support and a replaceable battery. Its US list price is above the frequently requested $500 ceiling, however. The Soundcore Boom 2 Plus is a credible outdoor alternative with IPX7 waterproofing, but its current price, weight, battery rating and independent comparative performance are not established here.
This guide separates manufacturer specifications from independent review evidence, shows which trade-offs matter outdoors, and explains how to choose without treating wattage or an IP number as a complete sound-quality ranking.
Quick verdict
| Speaker | Best fit | Documented strengths | Important uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| JBL Boombox 4 | Buyers prioritizing published specifications, long rated runtime, rugged protection and serviceable battery ownership | IP68, Bluetooth 5.4, Auracast, replaceable rechargeable battery, up to 28 hours plus up to 6 hours of Playtime Boost | JBL’s US list price is $549.95; no side-by-side independent test establishes it as the loudest or best-sounding option |
| Soundcore Boom 2 Plus | Outdoor listeners who want a large bass-oriented speaker and need IPX7 water protection | Manufacturer describes it as an outdoor bass Bluetooth speaker and specifies IPX7 waterproofing | Current price, dimensions, weight, runtime, power output and comparative listening results are not stated in the available evidence |
If your hard limit is $500, do not assume either model qualifies: the published JBL price is higher, while a current Soundcore price was not verified. Check the seller’s price in your country on the day you buy.

A boombox-size speaker is larger than a typical portable cylinder or compact travel model. It normally has a substantial handle, a battery large enough for an outdoor session and drivers designed to move more air. That size can produce a fuller sound at a picnic, pool deck or tailgate, but it also changes the ownership equation: you carry more weight, need more storage space and may leave the unit in one place once it arrives.

As an outdoor bluetooth speaker, it features a dedicated subwoofer and BassUp 2.0 technology to deliver deeper, harder-hitting bass — helping fill open spaces like campsites, patios, and backyards with powerful sound.

When phones start running low, the built-in power bank keeps them going — and when the speaker itself needs a top-up, fast charging gets it back quickly. Perfect for trips where outlets aren't an option. (Playtime varies by volume level and audio content.)
- Waterproof, Floatable, and Ready for Anything: Built for life outside, soundcore Boom 2 is an outdoor bluetooth speaker with an IPX7 waterproof rating and a floatable design. Bring it to the pool, the beach, or out in the rain—no worries, just uninterrupted music.
- Customize the Sound, Set the Vibe: Adjust your audio with the customizable Pro EQ in the Soundcore app for a sound that fits your preferences. Built‑in RGB lights add a splash of color to match the mood—whether it’s a beach hang, a late‑night bonfire, or a chill backyard moment.
“Loud” is not a single specification. Maximum acoustic output depends on driver design, enclosure, amplifier limits, distortion management, battery state, placement and the music itself. Manufacturer wattage figures describe electrical amplifier output under specified modes; they do not provide a standardized decibel result or prove that one speaker will sound louder to you in an open field.
JBL Boombox 4: the fully documented candidate
Published specifications
| Specification | JBL’s published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| US list price | $549.95 | Market- and date-sensitive listing price; verify before purchase |
| Rated playtime | Up to 28 hours, plus up to 6 hours with Playtime Boost | JBL’s specification sheet says runtime depends on volume and audio content; the product page describes up to 34 hours when the boost period is included |
| Water and dust protection | IP68 | Manufacturer rating for protection against dust and water under the applicable test conditions; follow the manual for real-world use |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.4 | Newer Bluetooth version does not, by itself, guarantee longer range or better sound with every phone |
| Multi-speaker connection | Auracast | Lets compatible products participate in an Auracast broadcast; the phones and speakers involved must support the feature |
| Frequency response | 37 Hz–20 kHz | Manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement of in-room or outdoor response |
| Battery | 99.02 Wh rechargeable pack; approximately three-hour charging time | Charging time and runtime vary with operating conditions |
| Dimensions | 506.4 × 262.9 × 212.9 mm | Measure your vehicle, shelf or storage box before ordering |
| Net weight | 5.89 kg (13 lb) | Portable in the broad sense, but substantial for one-handed carrying over distance |
| Amplifier ratings | AC mode: 2 × 65 W RMS woofers and 2 × 40 W RMS tweeters; battery mode: 2 × 60 W RMS woofers and 2 × 40 W RMS tweeters | Manufacturer electrical ratings; they are not a direct loudness or sound-quality ranking |
All figures in the table come from JBL’s technical specification sheet and US product listing. They are manufacturer claims rather than independent laboratory measurements.
Why it suits outdoor use
The combination of a large enclosure, separate woofer and tweeter amplification, and a high-capacity battery is designed for people who want room-filling playback without a wall outlet. IP68 is the most complete protection claim among the two models covered here because it includes dust protection as well as water protection. Still, an IP code is not permission to ignore sand, salt, mud or a wet charging connector. Keep the charging area clean and dry, and let the speaker dry before connecting power.
Portability trade-off
The 5.89 kg body and roughly half-metre width make the Boombox 4 transportable, not lightweight. It is practical to move from a car to a backyard, less convenient for a long hike or a crowded train. If one person will carry it frequently, account for the speaker’s mass plus the space needed to set it down securely.
Battery replacement and long-term ownership
JBL states that the rechargeable battery is replaceable. TechRadar’s review, published February 3, 2026, identifies a “JBL Battery 600” as the replacement to buy and discusses the battery as user-replaceable. That identification comes from the review, not a compatibility confirmation in the product specifications. Ask JBL support to confirm the exact part number for your regional Boombox 4 before ordering; battery listings can differ by model, market or revision.
Soundcore Boom 2 Plus: the outdoor alternative
What the manufacturer confirms
Soundcore presents the Boom 2 Plus as an outdoor bass Bluetooth speaker and specifies IPX7 waterproofing on its product page. The page also instructs users to make sure the waterproof cover is tightly sealed before submerging the speaker. Treat that cover instruction as a required operating step, not a suggestion.

The available product information does not establish a current price, net weight, dimensions, rated playtime, amplifier power, Bluetooth generation, multi-speaker protocol or frequency-response figure. It also does not provide an independent, controlled comparison with the Boombox 4. Those omissions do not mean the speaker performs poorly; they mean a fair ranking on those criteria cannot be supported from the published evidence available here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat IPX7 does—and does not—tell you
IPX7 indicates a water-protection level under defined test conditions, while the “X” means no dust-protection rating is supplied in that code. For a beach, campsite or dusty sports field, protect the speaker from grit and keep connectors covered even if the unit is water resistant. Before any immersion, close the waterproof cover firmly as Soundcore directs.

How to choose for your actual use
For a loud backyard or tailgate setup
Start with placement rather than wattage. Put the speaker on a stable, elevated surface with its drivers facing the listening area, leave clearance around the enclosure and avoid burying it in a corner. A large boombox can project well outdoors, but wind, crowd noise and distance still determine how loud it seems. If several compatible listeners need to share one broadcast, JBL’s Auracast support is a documented advantage; verify that every participating device supports Auracast.
For poolside or rainy conditions
Both models carry a water-protection claim, but their instructions differ in emphasis. With the Soundcore model, close the waterproof cover tightly before submersion. With either speaker, keep the charging port closed during use, rinse off contaminants according to the manual, and never charge while the connector is wet. Water resistance does not make a plugged-in speaker safe to handle in water.
For frequent carrying
The JBL’s published 5.89 kg weight is the key decision point. It is manageable for short transfers but can become tiring over longer distances. Because Soundcore’s weight is not stated here, ask the seller or manufacturer for the exact figure before choosing it for camping, beach walks or public transport. A shoulder strap, handle shape and balance can matter as much as the raw mass.
For all-day playback
Use the JBL runtime as a planning ceiling, not a guarantee. JBL explicitly conditions the rating on volume and audio content, and Playtime Boost is a separate six-hour mode. High volume, bass-heavy tracks, low temperatures and Bluetooth activity can reduce real runtime. Fully charge before leaving, carry the correct charging equipment, and avoid storing a lithium battery empty for long periods.

For repairability
The Boombox 4 has the clearer ownership story because JBL describes its battery as replaceable. Before buying, confirm whether the service process is genuinely user-accessible in your country and whether the replacement is available. For the Boom 2 Plus, do not assume a replacement battery exists simply because the speaker is rechargeable; the available product information does not state a replacement policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before paying
- Set the real budget. Include tax, delivery, protective storage and any replacement battery. The JBL listing is above $500 in the US, so it does not meet a strict ceiling at that listed price.
- Measure transport space. Compare the speaker’s published dimensions with your vehicle trunk, backpack or storage shelf. Leave room for the handle and for ventilation around the enclosure.
- Confirm the regional model. Check the exact model name, color variant and warranty territory. Prices, included accessories and replacement parts can vary by market.
- Verify connectivity. If multi-speaker playback matters, confirm that your phone and every additional speaker support the same protocol. Bluetooth version numbers alone do not guarantee feature compatibility.
- Read the water-use instructions. Locate the waterproof cover, close it before exposure and inspect it for grit or damage. Never rely on an IP mark when a port cover is open.
- Check battery support. Ask the manufacturer whether a replacement pack is sold for your exact regional model and whether installation is user-serviceable.
- Use a return window for listening. Because no controlled comparison establishes a universal winner, listen at the volume and distance you actually use. Check bass control, vocal clarity, distortion and battery behavior rather than judging from wattage.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming wattage equals loudness
The Boombox 4’s AC and battery-mode RMS figures describe amplifier output in two operating states. They do not translate directly into decibels at a distance, and they cannot rank the Boom 2 Plus because equivalent Soundcore figures are not available here. Prefer an independent test with a stated method or your own audition.
Treating maximum runtime as normal runtime
“Up to” figures are best-case manufacturer ratings. Volume, music content and special modes change consumption. Plan for less than the headline number when the speaker will play loudly outdoors.
Ignoring dust because a speaker is waterproof
The JBL’s IP68 claim includes dust protection; the Soundcore IPX7 code does not state a dust rating. Sand and fine grit can still damage covers, buttons and connectors. Clean the exterior before opening any port.
Buying a battery by name alone
TechRadar’s review mentions JBL Battery 600, but compatibility should be confirmed with JBL for your exact Boombox 4. Do not substitute a battery because its capacity or branding looks similar.
Comparing prices from different dates
Speaker prices change by region, promotion and retailer. Compare both models in the same currency on the same date, and distinguish a temporary sale from a recurring list price.
Which one should you buy?
Choose JBL Boombox 4 when
- You can exceed a $500 US budget and want a documented list price and specification set.
- IP68 dust and water protection is more useful to you than an unspecified dust rating.
- You need a published long-runtime claim, Bluetooth 5.4 or Auracast support.
- You value a replaceable battery and are willing to confirm the correct service part.
- A 5.89 kg speaker is acceptable for your normal carrying distance.
Choose Soundcore Boom 2 Plus when
- You prefer its outdoor-bass design and the seller confirms a price that fits your budget.
- IPX7 water protection meets your use case and you will keep the waterproof cover sealed.
- You can verify the missing details—weight, dimensions, runtime, charging time and warranty—before purchase.
- You do not need a documented Auracast or battery-replacement feature.
Wait or gather more information when
- Your decision depends on maximum sound-pressure level, because neither the available specifications nor a controlled comparison supplies a directly comparable result.
- You need dust exposure protection for a worksite and the Soundcore model’s dust rating is essential.
- You require a guaranteed replacement battery for the Soundcore speaker.
- Your budget is fixed below the JBL listing and you cannot confirm the Soundcore’s live price.
Bottom line
The JBL Boombox 4 is the safer specification-led recommendation: its price, runtime conditions, dimensions, weight, protection rating, connectivity and battery-replacement claim are documented in detail. It is also clearly a heavy speaker and costs more than $500 at the listed US price. The Soundcore Boom 2 Plus remains a sensible outdoor candidate, but you should treat it as a model to verify—not a proven head-to-head winner—until its current price, size, runtime and independent performance are confirmed for your market.
