For most families, choose Ticket to Ride: First Journey if children as young as six will play, or Just One Refresh if you have at least three players aged eight or older and want a very short cooperative word game. First Journey is listed for 2–4 players and 15–30 minutes by Days of Wonder; Asmodee USA gives it a 30-minute average. Just One Refresh is listed for 3–7 players, ages 8+, and 15 minutes or less by Asmodee USA.

Those are publisher estimates, not guaranteed timed results. Teaching, setup, reading ability, confidence with game rules and the number of players can all change the length of a family session.

Quick comparison

Game Youngest listed age Players Publisher-stated duration Core experience Best fit
Ticket to Ride: First Journey 6+ 2–4 15–30 minutes from Days of Wonder; 30-minute average from Asmodee USA Competitive route building and ticket completion Families with younger children or two to four players
Just One Refresh 8+ 3–7 15 minutes or less from Asmodee USA Cooperative one-word clue giving Larger groups that want a social word game

The player counts are not interchangeable. A two-person household cannot use Just One Refresh within its listed range, while First Journey is not listed for groups larger than four. Start with the youngest participant and the actual group size, then choose the style your family is most likely to enjoy.

Choose by the youngest player’s age

When a six- or seven-year-old is playing

Ticket to Ride: First Journey is the clearer choice because its official listing says ages 6+. It introduces the series’ train-card and route-claiming ideas with shorter routes, cards drawn directly from the deck and a goal of completing six tickets. Those changes keep the central idea recognizable without requiring the full complexity of a longer strategy game.

Age guidance is a floor for suitability, not a promise that every child will play independently. A child who is new to board games may need help reading cards, recognizing routes or remembering the objective. An older child who already understands turn-taking may finish faster than a younger child who needs repeated explanations.

When everyone is eight or older

Both games become options. Choose First Journey if the family wants a visual, competitive game in which players build toward individual ticket goals. Choose Just One Refresh if the group prefers talking, word association and a shared result rather than competing against one another.

When younger children below the listed age want to join

Do not treat an informal observation as a replacement for the published rating. Days of Wonder reproduces this comment from author Alan R. Moon: “With adults, you can play a game in as little as 10 minutes. With kids, it may take 20-30 minutes, but even 4 and 5 year olds can enjoy the game with some supervision.” That is a contextual observation about playing with supervision; the formal First Journey listing remains age 6+ and 15–30 minutes. An adult should decide whether a younger child can follow the rules and handle the components safely.

Ticket to Ride: First Journey: the short route-building option

What you do in the game

First Journey keeps the recognizable structure of collecting train cards, claiming routes and completing destination tickets. The routes are shorter, cards are drawn directly from the deck and the stated objective is to complete six tickets. The result is a family introduction to route building rather than a full-length version of the main series.

Because players pursue their own tickets, the table feels competitive even when everyone is learning. A child can see progress on the map, while an adult can still make choices about which routes to claim and which tickets to pursue. That combination makes it a stronger fit than a purely verbal game when family members want something to look at and manipulate.

How a first session typically unfolds

Before starting, identify the map version, place the board where everyone can see it and make sure each player understands the two visible goals: claim routes and complete six tickets. Show one example of collecting train cards and one example of placing trains on a route. Keeping the opening explanation concrete helps a child connect the cards in hand with spaces on the map.

During play, give new players time to inspect the board before advising them. Adults can point out that a route choice affects which ticket can be completed, but should avoid making every decision for a child. The game is most satisfying when younger players can claim a route themselves and watch their own network grow. If reading is difficult, an adult can read a ticket aloud while leaving the choice to the child.

How long a session should take

Days of Wonder lists 15–30 minutes. Asmodee USA lists a 30-minute average. Read those figures as a range and an average supplied by different publishers, not as conflicting promises or a laboratory measurement. Setup, teaching and the pace of the youngest player belong in the total time you reserve.

Moon’s observation that adults may finish in as little as 10 minutes and children may take 20–30 minutes helps explain why a family’s experience can differ from the headline estimate. It does not change the official age or duration listing.

A family trying to fit a game into a short break should distinguish playing time from the whole activity. Opening the box, finding the correct cards, explaining tickets and putting everything away all require minutes of their own. If your schedule has a firm end, begin before the break starts or plan to stop after a natural turn rather than relying on the shortest estimate.

Player count and map version

First Journey is listed for 2–4 players. It therefore works for a parent and child, a pair of siblings, or a small family group, but it is not the right choice for a gathering of five or more unless the group splits into separate tables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official game page lists USA and Europe versions. Check which map edition you are buying before checkout; the version affects the board your family will learn, even though the basic route-building concept is the same. If relatives already own one edition, confirm that your purchase matches theirs before planning a shared session.

Strengths and possible friction points

  • Visible progress: Colored train pieces and routes make a child’s accomplishments easy to see.
  • Meaningful competition: Players have individual tickets, so another player’s route claim can change the best next move.
  • Manageable scope: Shorter routes and six-ticket objective keep the introduction focused.
  • Reading support may be needed: Younger players can need help with tickets, route names or card colors.
  • Not a large-group game: The listed maximum is four, so it cannot serve one table of five to seven.

Who should choose it

  • Families whose youngest regular player is around the listed six-plus age.
  • Groups of two to four people.
  • Players who like maps, visible progress and individual goals.
  • Families that want a first step into route-building games rather than a word-association activity.

Just One Refresh: the very short cooperative word option

How the clue system works

Just One Refresh is cooperative. One player faces a mystery word while the other players write one-word clues. Matching clues are removed, so the active player must solve the word using the clues that remain. Everyone works toward the same result rather than trying to defeat another player.

The clue-removal rule is the central source of tension: a clue that seems obvious to one person may be duplicated by someone else and disappear. That makes the game social and conversational without requiring a long rules explanation.

How to teach it without using the whole time limit

Explain the three jobs at the table: one person solves, the others provide one-word clues, and matching clues are removed before the solver sees them. Demonstrate a harmless example, then begin. Players generally understand the consequence of writing an obvious duplicate after seeing it happen once. Keep the explanation focused on the shared objective instead of describing every possible edge case before the first word.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Writing ability and comfort with word association matter more here than map familiarity. An adult can help a hesitant participant phrase or read a clue, but the listed age is 8+, and every player should be able to interpret the words well enough to contribute. If one person dislikes public guessing, the cooperative format still allows encouragement without a competitive score between family members.

Duration and group size

Asmodee USA lists an average play time of 15 minutes or less, with 3–7 players and an age rating of 8+. This is the better choice for a larger family gathering that wants several short rounds or an activity between longer games.

The minimum of three players matters. A couple or a parent-and-child pair should not buy Just One Refresh expecting it to work as a two-player game; the clue system is built around multiple contributors. For groups of five to seven, however, it uses the whole table more naturally than First Journey’s four-player limit.

Because the listed duration is 15 minutes or less, it can fit as a warm-up, a post-dinner activity or a final game when nobody wants to begin a longer title. The estimate still excludes the time needed to gather everyone, distribute writing materials and explain the clue-removal rule. A group that talks through every clue may also run longer than a group that writes immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strengths and possible friction points

  • Shared outcome: The table works together instead of blocking one another on a map.
  • High participation: Three to seven people can contribute clues in the same round.
  • Short listed duration: It suits families looking for a game of 15 minutes or less.
  • Word dependence: Players need enough reading and language confidence to write or interpret clues.
  • No two-player option in the listing: Smaller households need another game or an additional participant.

Who should choose it

  • Families with at least three players.
  • Groups whose youngest participant is eight or older and comfortable writing or interpreting words.
  • People who prefer cooperation, conversation and word association.
  • Gatherings that need a game listed at 15 minutes or less.

Pick the game for your actual household

A family of two

Choose First Journey. It is listed for two players, while Just One Refresh starts at three. A two-player session may still take longer than the shortest publisher estimate if one player is learning the rules, so leave enough time for setup and explanation.

Three or four players with a young child

First Journey is usually the safer fit when the youngest player is six or seven. Its age listing includes younger children, and the board gives them a concrete way to see routes and tickets. Just One Refresh becomes an option only when every participant is at least eight and the group would rather give clues than build routes.

Five to seven players

Just One Refresh is the supported fit because its listed range extends to seven. First Journey stops at four, so using it with a larger gathering would require separate tables or rotating players rather than one shared game.

Mixed ages with adults and early elementary children

Start with First Journey’s age guidance and plan for supervision. Adults may understand the route and ticket objective quickly, while children may need help reading, counting or choosing between routes. The game can remain enjoyable for adults because the decisions are still meaningful, but the session may land closer to the longer end of the 15–30-minute estimate.

A group that wants a physical board

Choose First Journey when placing pieces on a map and watching routes develop is part of the appeal. The board gives players a shared visual reference and makes progress tangible. Just One Refresh is the better fit when the family would rather talk, write and react to one another’s clues than manage a map.

A group with an exact departure time

Neither listing should be treated as a guarantee. For the shortest possible scheduled activity, Just One Refresh has the tighter “15 minutes or less” description, but setup and discussion still add time. First Journey’s 15–30-minute range is more flexible but can reach the longer end when children are learning. Start early enough to allow teaching and pack-up.

How to keep a “quick” family game quick

Match the game to the number of people before opening the box

Confirm the listed range first: two to four for First Journey, three to seven for Just One Refresh. Choosing a game that fits the table prevents improvised rules that can make a short game confusing or unfair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teach only the objective and one turn before starting

Explain what players are trying to accomplish, then demonstrate a single turn. Add small clarifications as they arise. A complete lecture before the first move can consume a significant share of a 15-minute session, especially with children.

Budget for setup and explanation

The publisher times describe play, not necessarily the entire family ritual of finding a table, opening the box, sorting components and teaching new players. If you have a hard stop, begin earlier than the advertised duration suggests.

Let the youngest player set the pace

Do not promise that every game will finish at the shortest stated time. Reading speed, decision time and familiarity with turn-taking vary widely among children. A calm explanation and occasional supervision can prevent mistakes that create a longer restart later.

Choose the right kind of interaction

First Journey’s interaction comes from competing for routes and completing tickets. Just One Refresh’s interaction comes from proposing clues and noticing which ones match. A family that dislikes competitive blocking may experience First Journey as slower or more frustrating, while a family that wants visible board progress may find a word game less satisfying even when it is shorter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare an adult facilitator

Assign one adult to read a ticket, restate the objective or clarify whose turn it is when needed. This is especially useful with First Journey and a six-year-old, and it keeps the rest of the table moving. In Just One Refresh, a facilitator can remind clue writers that each clue must be one word and organize the reveal without judging anyone’s suggestion.

Stop comparing children by speed

Quick play should mean a manageable session, not a race. Let a child think through a route or word, then offer a neutral reminder of the goal. Rushing can lead to a mistaken ticket, an unreadable clue or a restart that takes longer than patient teaching would have.

What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you

The available figures are product specifications, not population statistics or independently timed studies. First Journey has two official duration descriptions: 15–30 minutes from Days of Wonder and a 30-minute average from Asmodee USA. Just One Refresh is listed at 15 minutes or less by Asmodee USA. None of those figures guarantees a result for a particular family.

Differences between a range and an average are useful rather than alarming. A 15–30-minute range communicates that sessions can vary substantially, while a 30-minute average gives a single planning point. The “15 minutes or less” wording for Just One Refresh signals a short target but still leaves room for teaching, reading and conversation. Use the figures to compare relative fit, not to promise an exact finish time.

No current price, stock status, retailer availability or first-hand session timing is established here. Check the seller and publisher at the time you plan to buy, and verify the map edition for First Journey. The shortlist is deliberately focused on games with clear official player, age and duration information; it is not a ranking of every fast family game available.

Buying and planning checklist

  1. Confirm the youngest player’s age against the publisher listing, not just the child’s enthusiasm.
  2. Count the people who will sit at one table and compare that number with the minimum and maximum.
  3. Decide whether the family wants competitive route building or cooperative word clues.
  4. Read the duration as an estimate and reserve extra time for opening, setup, teaching and cleanup.
  5. If purchasing First Journey, choose the USA or Europe version intentionally.
  6. If purchasing Just One Refresh, make sure at least three players aged eight or older are likely to participate.
  7. Check the seller for current price and availability because those details can change.
  8. Plan an adult to support reading, route choices or clue interpretation when needed.

A simple decision checklist

  1. Identify the youngest player who will regularly join.
  2. Count the people who will play at the same table.
  3. For ages 6–7, start with First Journey; for groups aged 8+, consider both.
  4. For two players, choose First Journey; for five to seven, choose Just One Refresh.
  5. Pick competitive route building or cooperative clue giving according to the table’s preference.
  6. Reserve time for setup and teaching in addition to the publisher’s play estimate.
  7. If buying First Journey, select the USA or Europe version intentionally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which game is better for a six-year-old?

Ticket to Ride: First Journey is the clearer fit because Days of Wonder lists it for ages 6+. Plan to supervise reading and route choices; the listing does not guarantee independent play.

Can two people play Just One Refresh?

Not within the listed specifications. Asmodee USA lists Just One Refresh for 3–7 players, so a two-person household should choose First Journey instead.

Which game is faster?

Just One Refresh has the shorter listed target at 15 minutes or less. First Journey is listed at 15–30 minutes by Days of Wonder and a 30-minute average by Asmodee USA. Both estimates exclude some setup and teaching time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Ticket to Ride: First Journey cooperative?

No. Players compete by claiming routes and completing their own tickets. Just One Refresh is the cooperative choice, with players contributing clues toward a shared result.

What is the difference between the USA and Europe versions of First Journey?

Days of Wonder lists USA and Europe versions. The map edition changes the board your family will use, so check the version before buying even though the basic route-building concept remains the same.

Can younger children play First Journey?

Days of Wonder lists the game for ages 6+, although author Alan R. Moon observes that four- and five-year-olds may enjoy it with supervision. That observation does not replace the formal age guidance; an adult should assess the child’s ability to follow rules and handle components.

The Bottom Line

Choose Ticket to Ride: First Journey for two to four players, especially when the youngest player is six or seven and the family wants a competitive map game. Choose Just One Refresh for three to seven players aged eight or older when a cooperative word game listed at 15 minutes or less is the better social fit. Treat every duration as a publisher estimate, allow time for teaching and setup, and verify the First Journey map edition before buying.
