For most Samsung DeX coding desks, buy a good Bluetooth keyboard first. Samsung documents pairing Bluetooth keyboards through the Galaxy device’s Bluetooth settings, so a keyboard can work without occupying the phone or tablet’s USB-C port. Add a USB-C HDMI hub only when you want a wired monitor and several USB accessories at the same time. If your Galaxy model and display support wireless DeX, that route can eliminate the display hub entirely.
There is no evidence for one universally compatible third-party hub or a single best coding keyboard. Compatibility changes with the exact Galaxy model, DeX mode, One UI software, display, keyboard layout and hub chipset. The practical approach is to choose the connection pattern first, then verify the specifications against Samsung’s current support pages before ordering.
Quick answer: choose the setup before the accessory
Samsung’s official documentation covers Bluetooth and USB/RF keyboards, wired display connections through a DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, and wireless DeX on supported device and display combinations. Its guidance does not certify every multiport hub or rank keyboards for programming. Use the table below to identify the smallest setup that meets your requirements.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portable coding with the Galaxy screen | Bluetooth | None | No | Pair the keyboard in Galaxy Bluetooth settings; battery or charging still matters. |
| External monitor with one display cable | Bluetooth | USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable | No, an adapter may be enough | Confirm that the exact Galaxy model supports the intended wired DeX mode. |
| Monitor plus USB keyboard, mouse, storage or Ethernet | Bluetooth or USB through the hub | HDMI through the hub | Usually | Check display output, USB ports, power behavior and model compatibility together. |
| Wireless monitor and minimal cabling | Bluetooth | Wireless DeX to a supported display | No | Wireless DeX is limited to supported Galaxy and display combinations, including Miracast-capable displays where Samsung specifies that requirement. |
Samsung’s DeX technical documentation and its current US setup guide describe these connection categories. Samsung also notes that model lists and supported modes can change, so treat compatibility as a device-specific check rather than a universal promise.

Bluetooth keyboards: the strongest fit for DeX coding
A Bluetooth keyboard leaves the USB-C port available for charging or a display adapter and avoids the uncertainty of USB peripheral support through a particular hub. Samsung’s setup instructions explicitly include Bluetooth keyboards and explain that pairing takes place through the Galaxy device’s Bluetooth settings. The keyboard is then available to DeX applications just as an external input device.
Pair a Bluetooth keyboard
- Charge the keyboard or install its batteries, then switch it on.
- Hold the keyboard’s pairing key until its status light indicates discovery mode. The exact key combination is keyboard-specific.
- On the Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. One UI labels can vary by model and software version.
- Enable Bluetooth, select the keyboard in the available-devices list and enter the displayed pairing code if prompted.
- Launch DeX, open the coding application and type in an editor or text field. If input is not accepted, return to the Galaxy Bluetooth list and confirm that the keyboard shows as connected.
- If you need to change layout, repeat-key behavior or modifier mapping, open the Galaxy device’s physical-keyboard settings under Settings > General management. Available controls differ by One UI release.
Samsung’s April 15, 2026 overview of using the Galaxy S26 series with DeX also presents Bluetooth input as a separate wireless accessory choice. Its examples are not a guarantee that every S26 configuration, keyboard or display has identical support; use the instructions for your own model.
What to look for in a coding keyboard
| Decision | Why it affects coding in DeX | How to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size, tenkeyless or compact layout | A full-size board gives you a number pad; a smaller board leaves more desk space and is easier to carry. | Count the physical keys you use for symbols, navigation, function-row commands and a number pad. Confirm the layout is ANSI, ISO or another arrangement you can type accurately. |
| Shortcut and modifier behavior | Editors, terminals and browser-based development tools may assign actions to Ctrl, Alt, function keys, arrows, Home, End and bracket keys. | Check the keyboard’s operating-system mode and test the shortcuts in your actual DeX coding app. Do not assume that a shortcut shown for a desktop operating system is implemented by an Android application. |
| Device switching | Multi-device Bluetooth memory is useful if one keyboard moves between a Galaxy device, laptop and tablet. | Look for the number of saved profiles and the switching method. A keyboard that stores only one connection is less convenient for a shared desk. |
| Power and charging | A flat battery can interrupt a coding session, especially when the keyboard is the only input device. | Prefer a rechargeable model with a common charging connector or a keyboard whose battery replacement is easy. Check whether it can be used while charging; that feature is not universal. |
| Key feel and noise | Long editing sessions expose differences in travel, actuation force and sound more than short messages do. | Use a return policy or a local tryout when possible. Samsung’s DeX documents do not provide ergonomic or typing-speed comparisons. |
| Backlight and travel case | Lighting helps in a dim room; a case protects a portable DeX setup. | Balance those conveniences against extra thickness, weight and battery consumption. |
There is no Samsung-published coding benchmark for keyboard models. A keyboard should be called a good DeX choice because its layout, shortcuts and power plan fit your work, not because a generic product list labels it best.

Do you need a USB-C hub for Samsung DeX?
No—not universally. A hub is most useful when a wired monitor and multiple USB devices must share one USB-C connection. For a single monitor, a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or a DeX cable may be simpler. For a supported wireless display, no display hub is needed at all; the Bluetooth keyboard remains an independent input device.

When a direct adapter is enough
Choose a direct adapter when the desk needs one display output and you plan to keep the keyboard and mouse on Bluetooth. Samsung describes wired DeX through a DeX cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. The adapter must match the phone or tablet’s supported wired mode and the monitor’s input. A direct adapter generally offers fewer ports than a hub, but fewer ports also mean fewer compatibility and power variables.
When a hub earns its place
A hub makes sense for a permanent desk with HDMI, a USB keyboard or mouse, storage, wired networking or other peripherals. Samsung’s documentation establishes the general adapter and peripheral workflow, not certification of every third-party multiport hub. A USB-A keyboard connected to a USB-C device may require an OTG adapter, and the behavior of each port depends on the hub and Galaxy model.
Do not assume that a port works because its connector fits. Samsung’s keyboard-and-mouse guidance notes that wired keyboard and mouse devices do not work through its DeX cable path. If you need wired USB input, use a supported hub or adapter path and verify it for the exact device; otherwise use Bluetooth.
Hub selection checklist
| Hub characteristic | What to match | What the Samsung guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Display connector | HDMI, the monitor’s input and the required cable | Samsung documents USB-C-to-HDMI and DeX-cable workflows, but does not certify a universal third-party hub. |
| Resolution and refresh | The monitor’s native mode and the modes your Galaxy model can output | Exact supported modes are model- and software-dependent; verify them on the current device support page. |
| USB ports | Number and type of ports for keyboard, mouse, storage or other equipment | Supported USB peripherals can be connected through supported ports; not every port on every adapter is guaranteed. |
| USB-A equipment | Whether the hub exposes USB-A directly or needs a separate OTG adapter | Samsung notes that OTG adaptation may be needed when USB-A equipment is connected to USB-C. |
| Power passthrough | USB-C Power Delivery input, wattage and whether the hub can charge while displaying | Check the hub’s specification and the Galaxy model’s charging behavior; the general DeX pages do not give one universal power figure. |
| Portability | Cable length, enclosure size and strain relief | These are physical-product choices, not DeX compatibility guarantees. |
| Model verification | The exact Galaxy phone or tablet, One UI version and intended DeX mode | Samsung’s support lists are model-specific and can change; check immediately before purchase. |

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Identify the Galaxy model and software. Open the device information page and record the exact model number and One UI version. Then consult Samsung’s DeX support instructions for the current wired-DeX list. Do not infer support from the USB-C connector alone.
- Choose the display path. For one monitor, compare a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter with a DeX cable. For a monitor plus USB accessories, select a hub that lists the needed HDMI and USB ports and has documented power passthrough if charging during use is important.
- Check the monitor input and output mode. Match HDMI input, cable type and the monitor’s supported resolution to the modes available on the Galaxy model. Samsung’s technical DeX page explains the connection concepts but does not turn every hub into an officially certified accessory.
- Connect the hub and display. Attach the HDMI cable to the monitor and hub, select the correct monitor input and connect hub power if the hub requires it. A powered hub can be preferable for several peripherals, but its actual charging behavior must be confirmed from its specification.
- Add USB peripherals carefully. Plug a USB keyboard, mouse or other device into the hub’s supported port. USB-A equipment may need OTG adaptation. If a wired keyboard is connected through a DeX cable path and does not work, that is a documented limitation rather than proof that every wired keyboard is defective.
- Connect the Galaxy device. Attach the hub or adapter to the phone or tablet’s USB-C port. Accept the DeX prompt if it appears and wait for the external desktop to render.
- Pair Bluetooth input separately if preferred. A Bluetooth keyboard can remain connected even when the monitor is wired. This leaves hub ports free and avoids relying on the hub for keyboard data.
- Validate the real workload. Open the coding application and test text entry, punctuation, Ctrl and Alt combinations, function keys, navigation keys, mouse clicks and sleep/wake recovery before committing to a permanent cable layout.
How to use wireless DeX instead
Wireless DeX can remove the display cable and hub, but it is not a universal feature. Samsung describes wireless DeX for supported Galaxy devices and displays, including Miracast-capable displays where applicable. Its current workspace support page distinguishes tablet-based and wireless DeX options, so check the exact combination rather than assuming that any smart TV or monitor will appear.
- Confirm that both the Galaxy device and the intended display are listed as compatible with wireless DeX. Samsung’s lists and instructions can change with model and software updates.
- Turn on the display’s wireless-display or screen-mirroring function if required by that display.
- Open the Galaxy Quick panel and select the DeX or wireless-display control. Labels and locations vary by One UI version.
- Choose the display shown by the Galaxy device and approve the connection on the display if prompted.
- Pair the Bluetooth keyboard through Settings > Connections > Bluetooth; wireless display does not automatically provide a keyboard.
- Run the same coding-app shortcut and input test used for a wired setup. If the display is unsupported or the wireless DeX control is absent, use a verified wired path instead of trying random hubs.
Compatibility depends on the exact Galaxy model
Samsung’s pages include model- and mode-specific qualifications. A phone that supports wireless DeX may not support every wired resolution, and a tablet’s DeX behavior can differ from a phone’s. The presence of USB-C does not establish video output, DeX support or compatibility with a particular hub.
Before purchasing, record these details:
- Exact Galaxy model number and whether it is a phone or tablet.
- Current One UI and Android software version.
- Wired, wireless or both DeX modes required.
- Monitor brand-independent specifications: input connector, target resolution and refresh rate.
- Every peripheral that will share the hub, including USB-A versus USB-C connectors.
- Whether the phone must charge while DeX and USB devices are active.
Then compare those requirements with Samsung’s current support information and the hub manufacturer’s specification for that exact model. A listing that merely says USB-C hub or DeX compatible is not enough evidence by itself.
Coding-focused setup decisions
One keyboard or several?
Use one Bluetooth keyboard when you move between devices and value a consistent layout. Multi-device switching is convenient, but switching keys can interrupt a session and the keyboard may reconnect to the wrong device after sleep. A dedicated keyboard avoids that behavior at the cost of desk space.

Bluetooth or USB keyboard through the hub?
Bluetooth is the lower-risk default for DeX because Samsung explicitly documents its pairing path and it does not consume a hub port. USB can be attractive for a fixed desk or a keyboard that lacks Bluetooth, but it introduces hub, OTG and DeX-cable limitations. Select USB only after confirming that the complete adapter path is supported.
Compact or full-size?
Compact boards suit travel and leave room for a mouse. Full-size boards help if your coding workflow uses a number pad or dedicated navigation cluster. Whichever size you choose, verify the physical location of brackets, braces, backslash, pipe, tilde and function keys; an unfamiliar layout can slow code entry more than a missing feature.

The keyboard pairs but produces no text
- Check that the keyboard is connected to the Galaxy device rather than another remembered computer.
- Test in a basic text field, then check the coding app’s own keymap.
- Review the physical-keyboard layout in Galaxy settings and select the layout printed on the keycaps.
- Disconnect and pair again if the keyboard appears connected but sends no events after sleep.
The wired keyboard is missing while the monitor works
First identify the connection path. Samsung specifically notes that wired keyboard and mouse devices do not work through its DeX cable path. Move the keyboard to a supported hub or OTG adapter path, or use Bluetooth. Also test one USB device at a time; a hub can have shared power or bandwidth limits that are not visible from the connector shape.
The monitor says no signal
- Confirm that the Galaxy model supports wired DeX and video output.
- Select the monitor’s HDMI input manually.
- Reseat the USB-C and HDMI connections and try the hub with its power input attached.
- Test a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter if the hub has multiple outputs or unusual switching logic.
- Check the monitor’s supported mode against the Galaxy output rather than forcing an unsupported resolution.
Wireless DeX is not offered
Wireless DeX requires a supported Galaxy/display combination. If the DeX control is absent or the display never appears, verify compatibility in Samsung’s current instructions instead of treating the problem as a keyboard or hub fault. A wired adapter is the fallback when the model supports wired DeX.

Charging stops when the hub is connected
Confirm that the hub has USB-C Power Delivery passthrough, that its input is connected to an adequate charger and that the Galaxy model accepts charging while DeX is active. Hub power ratings and real behavior are product-specific; Samsung’s general DeX guidance does not establish one wattage that works for every setup.
Alternatives for tablet owners
A compatible Galaxy Tab keyboard cover can provide an integrated typing surface without a separate Bluetooth board. An older DeX dock may also be useful if you already own a tablet and the dock is listed as compatible. Neither accessory is necessary for every DeX setup, and neither removes the need to verify the tablet’s current wired or wireless DeX support.
A monitor is another category-level choice: select one with the required HDMI input for a wired desk or documented wireless-display support for wireless DeX. Treat the monitor and Galaxy device as a pair; the display’s smart-TV features do not automatically imply wireless DeX compatibility.

| Your situation | Recommended category combination | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Traveling coder using the phone screen | Compact Bluetooth keyboard | No display adapter, hub or USB-A conversion is needed. |
| One external HDMI monitor, no wired peripherals | Bluetooth keyboard plus direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter | Fewer ports and fewer hub compatibility variables. |
| Permanent desk with HDMI, mouse and USB storage | Bluetooth or verified USB keyboard plus a powered USB-C HDMI hub | The hub consolidates display and peripherals; verify every port and the exact Galaxy model. |
| Supported wireless display and minimal cables | Bluetooth keyboard plus wireless DeX | The display connection is wireless, but keyboard pairing remains separate. |
| Galaxy Tab already equipped with a compatible cover | Existing keyboard cover, with a hub only if the tablet’s wired display and USB requirements demand it | A second keyboard may add cost and bulk without improving the workflow. |
Bottom line
Start with a Bluetooth keyboard whose physical layout, shortcut behavior, battery plan and device-switching features match your coding habits. Add a USB-C HDMI hub only for a wired monitor plus several USB accessories, and verify the hub against the exact Galaxy model, display mode, ports and power requirements. If Samsung lists your device and display for wireless DeX, wireless video can replace the hub; if not, use a documented wired adapter path and treat every third-party hub as a compatibility check rather than a guaranteed solution.
