For most gym users, the best Bluetooth headphones are secure-fitting earbuds that tolerate sweat and stay stable during movement. The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are the strongest all-round choice in the cited 2026 guides because their ear hooks, active noise cancellation (ANC) and heart-rate sensor address the main workout problems. Choose the JBL Endurance Peak 4 if water protection is your priority, the Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless for a lower-cost ear-hook design, the soundcore Sport X20 for workout-focused fit features, or the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) when ANC and comfort matter more than compactness.

“Headphones” can mean over-ear models or earbuds. This guide ranks five Bluetooth workout options by use case rather than pretending one shape suits every athlete. In-ear designs are generally lighter and easier to stabilize; over-ear headphones can feel more enveloping and isolate sound well, but their pads may become hot and damp during a hard session.

Quick comparison: five gym-ready Bluetooth headphones

The products below are ranked editorially from the cited 2026 reviews and manufacturer information, not from a controlled test by this article’s author. Battery figures are published estimates and can change with ANC, volume, codec, phone and other settings.

Pick Best for Fit and water information reported by sources Noise control and battery information Important caveat
Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 Best overall workout earbuds Over-ear hooks; IPX4 ANC, heart-rate sensor; up to 10 hours, or eight with ANC enabled, according to WIRED IPX4 covers splashes and sweat exposure described by the cited guides; it is not a swimming or submersion rating
JBL Endurance Peak 4 Durability-focused training Ear hooks; IP68 reported by RTINGS ANC is reported as much less effective than the Beats pick; default sound is strongly bass-forward IP ratings are not interchangeable descriptions of every type of water exposure
Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless Budget ear-hook option Ear-hook design; IP55 reported by RTINGS No ANC RTINGS raises a build concern at the connection between the hook and earbud
soundcore Sport X20 Workout-oriented fit features Positioned by its manufacturer as sport earbuds with fit and sweat-protection features; an independently verified rating was not established in the cited material Feature and battery details should be checked against the current product specification Manufacturer claims are not the same as independent comparative testing
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) ANC and comfortable, secure in-ear fit Secure, comfortable fit and IPX4 reported by TechRadar Workout ANC pick in TechRadar; about six hours of battery life reported Bulkier than some rivals and has less reported battery endurance than the Powerbeats Pro 2

Use the table as a shortlist, then match the design to your movement, environment and tolerance for in-ear pressure. A secure fit that you can wear for the entire session is more useful than a feature you stop using because the earbuds hurt or slip.

What matters most in a gym headphone

Fit stability comes before sound quality

Running, jumping, rowing and weight training create repeated acceleration and sweat that can loosen a smooth, shallow-fitting earbud. Ear hooks wrap around the outer ear; wings press into the concha; correctly sized silicone tips create a seal in the ear canal. RTINGS says the Powerbeats Pro 2’s hooks enhance stability, and WIRED reported that the hooks stayed in place during its testing. Those are source-reported observations, not a promise that every ear will fit identically.

When a model includes several tip sizes, try each one while moving your jaw and turning your head. The right tip should seal without painful pressure. A loose seal reduces bass and lets gym noise leak in, which can tempt you to raise the volume. An overly tight tip can cause soreness before the workout ends. Ear hooks can improve security but may press against glasses, masks or helmet straps, so test the complete combination you will actually wear.

Understand an IP rating instead of treating it as “waterproof”

An IP code uses two digits: the first describes dust protection and the second describes water protection. Tom’s Guide explains that an “X” means no dust-protection figure is supplied in the rating, while the water digit describes a defined laboratory exposure. IPX4 is protection from splashes, the practical baseline cited for the Powerbeats Pro 2 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen). It does not establish protection from jets of water, prolonged soaking or swimming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTINGS reports an IP68 rating for the JBL Endurance Peak 4. That is a different rating from IPX4, not a simple “more waterproof” score that automatically covers every real-world situation. Follow the model’s manufacturer instructions, keep charging contacts dry, and never infer swim suitability unless the manufacturer explicitly states it. Sweat contains salts that can corrode contacts over time even when a product has a water rating.

Choose ANC, transparency or open awareness deliberately

ANC uses microphones and signal processing to reduce outside sound. It can make a noisy cardio area easier to tolerate and may let you listen at a lower level, but strong isolation also makes it harder to hear people, alarms or equipment. Transparency or ambient modes pass outside sound through the microphones. They are preferable when you need to hear a training partner, an announcement or traffic on the way to the gym.

An ANC specification does not tell you how effective the cancellation will be against every sound. In the cited comparison, RTINGS says the JBL Endurance Peak 4’s ANC is much less effective than the Beats pick. Skullcandy’s Push Active True Wireless has no ANC, so its isolation depends on the physical seal and your listening volume. TechRadar identifies the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) as a workout ANC pick, while also noting their bulkier form.

Battery claims depend on how you use the earbuds

WIRED reports up to 10 hours of playback for the Powerbeats Pro 2, or eight hours with ANC enabled. TechRadar reports up to 10 hours for the same model and up to 45 hours with its charging case. These are publisher-reported figures, not measurements made for this article; “up to” normally reflects favorable settings rather than continuous ANC at high volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect shorter runtimes with ANC, calls, high volume, cold temperatures or an aging battery. Check whether the advertised figure is for one earbud, a pair, or total case capacity. A case that supplies several recharges matters if you train away from an outlet, while a short single-session battery can be adequate for people who charge after every workout.

Phone compatibility and controls are practical constraints

All five choices are Bluetooth products, but features such as quick pairing, device switching, voice assistants and heart-rate data can depend on the phone and operating system. Confirm compatibility before purchase, especially if you want to use the Powerbeats Pro 2’s reported heart-rate sensor rather than simply play audio. Physical buttons or a firm press control can be easier to operate with sweaty fingers than a touch surface, but the cited material does not establish identical control layouts across these models.

The five best Bluetooth headphones for gym use

1. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 — best overall for mixed workouts

The Powerbeats Pro 2 earns the lead position because it combines the features most gym users ask for: ear hooks for stability, ANC for noisy rooms, and a heart-rate sensor reported by RTINGS. WIRED reports that the hooks remained in place during its testing and lists up to 10 hours of playback, falling to eight hours with ANC enabled. That combination suits people who move between treadmills, free weights and machines without wanting to readjust their earbuds.

The fit is the reason to choose this model over a conventional smooth earbud. The hook bears part of the load, while the in-ear tip provides the seal. It is still important to select the correct tip and check comfort around the outer ear; an ear hook cannot compensate for a tip that is too small or too large. People who wear thick glasses should test for pressure where the hook and glasses temple meet.

RTINGS and WIRED report an IPX4 rating. Treat that as splash and sweat exposure protection, not permission to rinse the earbuds under a tap, wear them in the shower or take them swimming. Wipe them after training and let them dry before putting them in the case. The lower eight-hour figure with ANC is the relevant planning number if you keep noise cancellation on for every session.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Choose it when: you want the most balanced mix of stability, ANC, workout features and long single-session battery life.
  • Think twice when: you need a stronger water rating, dislike ear hooks, or expect to use ANC for very long periods between charges.

2. JBL Endurance Peak 4 — best for a durability-first shortlist

The Endurance Peak 4 is the logical alternative when moisture protection is your first filter. RTINGS reports an IP68 rating and an ear-hook design, giving this model a clear durability-oriented identity in the cited material. Hooks can be useful for running and circuit training because they add a mechanical anchor rather than relying only on an in-ear seal.

There are trade-offs. RTINGS says the ANC is much less effective than the Beats pick and describes the default sound as strongly bass-forward. That may suit listeners who want pronounced low end for training, but it can make vocals or acoustic instruments less balanced until you adjust the equalizer, if the companion app provides one. Do not assume the IP68 label means you can swim with the earbuds; verify the manufacturer’s permitted exposure and keep the charging case away from water.

  • Choose it when: your workouts are especially sweaty or you place more weight on the reported IP68 rating than on top-tier ANC.
  • Think twice when: you want neutral default sound, highly effective noise cancellation, or a compact earbud without a hook.

3. Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless — best budget-style ear-hook choice

The Push Active True Wireless offers the basic security strategy many gym users need: an ear hook that helps keep each bud in place. RTINGS reports an IP55 rating, which indicates a different level of stated protection from the IPX4 and IP68 examples above. It also reports that this model has no ANC, so the passive seal is the main way it reduces gym noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No ANC can be an advantage for people who want to stay aware of announcements or training partners and do not want microphone-based processing. It is a limitation in a loud weight room if you are seeking isolation at a low listening volume. RTINGS also raises a build concern at the connection between the hook and the bud. Inspect that joint periodically, avoid twisting the hook when removing the earbud, and use the case so the parts are not crushed in a bag.

  • Choose it when: you want a hook-secured design and can live without active noise cancellation.
  • Think twice when: you need the strongest construction confidence, premium ANC or a small, low-profile fit.

4. soundcore Sport X20 — best when fit-focused workout features lead

The Sport X20 is positioned by its manufacturer as a workout earbud with fit and sweat-protection features. That makes it relevant for readers who want a sports-specific design rather than a general-purpose earbud. The available material does not provide an independent comparative test or a verified rating and battery table for this guide, so treat the manufacturer’s specifications as claims to confirm on the current product page and in the manual.

Before choosing it, check exactly how the adjustable or stabilizing parts fit your ears, what water exposure is covered, and whether the advertised battery figure includes ANC. Compare the return policy and replacement-tip availability as practical safeguards: fit is highly individual, and a sports feature is useful only if it remains comfortable through your longest session.

5. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) — best for ANC and a comfortable in-ear fit

TechRadar names the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) as a workout ANC pick and reports a secure, comfortable fit. This is the option for people who care most about reducing the sound of fans, treadmills and nearby conversations while keeping an in-ear design rather than moving to over-ear pads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TechRadar reports IPX4 and about six hours of battery life. The shorter endurance is acceptable for many individual workouts but gives less margin for travel or multiple sessions without charging. The earbuds are also described as bulkier than some rivals. Check how far they protrude from your ears if you sleep in earbuds, wear a beanie or use a helmet; those factors can turn a comfortable store fit into pressure during movement.

  • Choose it when: effective ANC and a secure, comfortable fit matter more than minimum size or maximum battery.
  • Think twice when: you need a higher stated water rating, very long sessions between charges or the least noticeable earbud body.

How to make earbuds stay in place

  1. Start with clean, dry ears and earbuds. Oil and sweat reduce friction. Wipe the outside of the buds with a suitable dry or slightly damp cloth, following the manufacturer’s care instructions, and let them dry before insertion.
  2. Try every supplied tip size. A tip that is too small leaks and moves; one that is too large causes pressure. Test left and right ears separately because they may need different sizes.
  3. Insert and rotate as directed. Seat the tip, then twist the earbud until the wing or hook rests in its intended crease. Do not force a hook past a painful point.
  4. Move before starting the workout. Jog in place, nod, look over both shoulders and open your jaw. If the seal breaks or the bud shifts, adjust the tip or position now rather than during a set.
  5. Set controls before you sweat. Choose ANC, transparency and volume while your hands are dry. Store the phone where Bluetooth remains reliable and where you can reach it without climbing off equipment.
  6. Recheck after the first ten minutes. Heat and perspiration can change the fit. If you need repeated readjustments, a wing or ear-hook model is probably a better match than a smooth earbud.

Sweat, charging and cleaning routine

  • Use the water rating as a boundary, not a guarantee of long-term sweat immunity. IPX4 means splash protection in the cited explanation; it does not mean waterproof or swim-proof.
  • Remove visible moisture before returning earbuds to the case. Wet contacts can prevent charging and accelerate corrosion.
  • Let earbuds dry at room temperature. Avoid hair dryers, radiators and direct high heat, which can damage batteries, seals or adhesives.
  • Keep the charging case dry even when the earbuds have a water rating; the case may have different protection or none stated.
  • Clean earwax from sound openings gently and according to the manual. A blocked mesh can make one side seem quieter and may lead you to raise the volume.
  • Charge before the session if ANC will be enabled. The Powerbeats Pro 2 figure reported by WIRED falls from up to 10 hours to eight with ANC; TechRadar reports about six hours for the Bose model.

Common gym problems and fixes

“The earbuds keep falling out.”

Try a different tip size and reseat the earbud with the hook or wing in its crease. If movement persists during jumping or running, switch to an ear-hook model. Do not solve a loose fit by increasing volume; the resulting leakage and louder playback can make hearing fatigue worse.

“One side sounds quieter after training.”

Inspect the sound opening for moisture or earwax, dry the earbud and clean it using the manufacturer’s method. Check the phone’s left-right balance and reconnect Bluetooth. If the imbalance returns only after sweaty sessions, stop using the earbuds until they are fully dry and consult the warranty or service guidance.

“ANC feels uncomfortable or unsafe.”

Switch to transparency or disable ANC when you need to hear people, alarms or traffic. ANC can also create a pressure-like sensation for some listeners; a lower level, a different tip seal or a non-ANC model such as the Push Active may be more comfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The battery does not match the advertised number.”

Compare your use with the test conditions implied by “up to.” ANC, high volume, calls, cold temperatures and battery age reduce runtime. Confirm whether the number refers to one charge or the case total, then clean the charging contacts and verify that both earbuds seat correctly in the case.

“The earbuds charge inconsistently.”

Dry the contacts, remove debris and press each earbud fully into its slot. A wet or poorly seated earbud may appear in the case without actually charging. Do not charge until moisture has evaporated.

Safety and awareness in a shared gym

Noise cancellation is a convenience, not a reason to ignore your surroundings. Keep transparency enabled or use one-ear listening when you need to hear a coach, a spotter, an emergency announcement or nearby equipment. Follow the gym’s rules about headphones and never wear audio that prevents you from responding to staff instructions.

Use a volume that masks music without masking every external sound. If you are lifting with a partner, agree on a simple signal before starting. For outdoor runs to and from the gym, awareness of traffic and cyclists should take precedence over isolation; an open or transparency setting may be the better choice even if ANC sounds more immersive.

How the evidence should influence your decision

The cited material combines independent editorial reviews from RTINGS, WIRED and TechRadar with manufacturer positioning and practical guidance from Tom’s Guide. The rankings above are therefore use-case judgments, not a universal laboratory leaderboard. Current prices, regional availability and affiliate terms were not established, so they are intentionally not used to rank the products.

For a single recommendation, start with the Powerbeats Pro 2 if its ear-hook fit suits you and IPX4 is adequate for your training. Move to the JBL Endurance Peak 4 when the reported IP68 rating is the deciding factor and you can accept less effective ANC. Choose the Skullcandy Push Active when hook stability and no-ANC simplicity fit your budget and awareness needs. Consider the soundcore Sport X20 after verifying its current specifications, or the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) when workout ANC and comfort outweigh bulk and shorter battery life.
