If you want the simplest documented path from records to speakers, start by checking the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X, Fluance RT80, and Fluance RT81. Each has an internal phono preamp, while the U-Turn Orbit Plus includes one only in the Pluto 2 configuration. The Sony PS-LX310BT also has a built-in preamp, but current 2026 buying advice increasingly points to a newer successor, so regional availability and the exact model number matter.
A built-in phono preamp solves only the phono-stage requirement. You still need powered speakers or an amplifier/receiver connected to passive speakers; the turntable itself does not supply speaker amplification.
What a built-in phono preamp actually does
A phono cartridge produces a very small signal that needs two things before ordinary line-level equipment can use it: substantial gain and the standardized equalization used when records are cut. A phono preamp performs both jobs. When the preamp is built into the turntable, you can normally connect the turntable’s line output to a compatible line input on powered speakers, an amplifier, a receiver, or another line-level device.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Turntable: spins the record and converts the groove into an electrical signal.
- Phono preamp: provides phono-stage gain and equalization. It can be inside the turntable, inside an amplifier, or a separate box.
- Power amplifier: supplies the power needed to drive passive speakers. Powered speakers contain their own amplifier.
- Speakers: turn the amplified electrical signal into sound.
Therefore, connecting a turntable directly to passive, unpowered speakers will not work, even when the turntable has a built-in preamp. A powered-speaker setup is usually the shortest signal path. If you already own an amplifier or receiver with passive speakers, connect the turntable to a line input when its internal preamp is active, or to the unit’s phono input only when the turntable’s preamp is bypassed.
Documented beginner choices at a glance
The table compares what is established for each model or model family. It is not an independently tested sound-quality ranking, and no universal best choice can be supported from the available evidence.

Which model fits which beginner?
Audio-Technica AT-LP60X: the least complicated documented starting point
The AT-LP60X is the clearest choice when your priority is a straightforward, largely automatic first system. Audio-Technica describes it as a fully automatic belt-drive turntable with selectable 33-1/3 and 45 RPM speeds. Pressing the appropriate controls handles the start and return sequence, which reduces the number of manual actions for a new listener.
Its phono/line switch is central to setup. In LINE mode, the internal phono preamp is active and the detachable RCA cable can feed a line input on powered speakers, an amplifier, or a receiver. In PHONO mode, the internal stage is bypassed; use that position only when the receiving equipment supplies the phono stage.
The turntable has an aluminum platter, an integrated cartridge with a replaceable stylus, a hinged dust cover, and a detachable RCA output cable. The named replacement stylus is the ATN3600LC. Before ordering a replacement, confirm the exact turntable version and the seller’s regional compatibility information.

Audio-Technica’s published specifications list wow and flutter below 0.25% (weighted) at 3 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio above 50 dB (DIN-B). These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent comparison test, so they should be treated as stated design figures rather than proof that this model sounds better than every alternative.
Fluance RT80 and RT81: internal preamp with a bypass option
Fluance states that both the RT80 and RT81 include internal phono preamps. That allows a direct connection to powered speakers or to an amplifier/receiver that lacks a phono input. The preamp can also be bypassed, which is useful if you later add a separate phono stage or change to a receiver with a phono input.
The two models are differentiated in Fluance’s comparison by their supplied cartridges and plinth construction. The RT80 includes an AT91 cartridge. The RT81 adds an AT95E cartridge and a solid MDF plinth. Those are documented hardware differences; the available evidence does not support a universal sound-quality verdict between them.
Because the exact operating automation, current bundle contents, and replacement-part availability can vary by region and production run, inspect the current specification page before buying. Confirm that the listing says the internal preamp is present and that the output switch is set appropriately for your system.
U-Turn Orbit Plus: a configuration-sensitive option
The Orbit Plus is not automatically a built-in-preamp turntable in every configuration. It uses manual speed selection between 33 and 45 RPM, provides RCA output, and can be ordered with an optional built-in Pluto 2 phono preamp.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
When the Pluto 2 option is included, connect the line output to a line input. When it is omitted, the turntable needs either an amplifier or receiver with a phono input or a separate external phono preamp. Treat the bundle selector as part of the product name: two Orbit Plus listings can have different connection requirements even though the turntable family is the same.

Fluance says its Reference models, RT82 through RT85, require an external phono preamp or an amplifier/receiver with a phono input. They may have other upgrades that matter to a particular buyer, but they do not satisfy a strict built-in-preamp requirement without adding another component.
Do not assume that a higher model number automatically means a better beginner purchase. If your goal is a short, low-complexity setup, the extra phono-stage requirement can outweigh an upgrade elsewhere in the design.
Sony PS-LX310BT: verify the generation before purchasing
Sony’s specification page identifies a built-in phono preamp on the PS-LX310BT’s line output. That establishes the preamp requirement for that model, but it does not by itself establish current stock, regional pricing, or the complete feature set of newer products.
Current 2026 editorial guides identify the newer PS-LX3BT as a successor or current beginner pick. The available evidence does not include the newer model’s full official specifications, so check the model number, country-specific listing, and connection details rather than assuming that PS-LX310BT information applies to PS-LX3BT.

How to choose without overbuying
1. Start with the speakers or amplifier you already own
Look at the input labels on your existing equipment. A pair of powered speakers normally has a line-level input. An amplifier or receiver may have inputs labeled AUX, CD, LINE, or similar, plus a dedicated PHONO input. Connect a turntable with its internal preamp active to a line input; connect a turntable with the preamp bypassed to PHONO.
If you have only passive speakers and no amplifier, the turntable cannot drive them. Budget for an amplifier/receiver or choose powered speakers. The built-in preamp removes one box from the signal chain, not the power amplifier.
2. Decide whether automation matters
- Choose the AT-LP60X if fully automatic start, playback, and return are more important than manual involvement.
- Choose a manual design such as the Orbit Plus if you prefer to place the tonearm and select speed yourself.
- For the Fluance models and Sony model discussed here, confirm the exact operating controls in the current listing because the available documentation does not establish every automation detail.
3. Confirm the preamp on the exact SKU or bundle
Product families are not interchangeable. RT80 and RT81 have internal preamps, while RT82 through RT85 require an external phono stage or a phono input. The Orbit Plus preamp is an option. The AT-LP60X has a switchable internal stage. A listing that says a family can have a preamp is not enough; verify the exact configuration selected at checkout.
4. Check stylus and cartridge serviceability
A stylus is a wear item, so maintenance should be part of the initial decision. The AT-LP60X documentation names the replaceable ATN3600LC stylus, making the replacement path explicit. Fluance documentation identifies the supplied AT91 and AT95E cartridges, but replacement-stylus details were not established for this comparison; confirm the current parts catalog before purchase. For a configurable turntable, save the cartridge and stylus model with your receipt.
5. Treat the dust cover as a practical requirement
A hinged dust cover is included with the AT-LP60X. If a cover is important to you, confirm that the exact Fluance, U-Turn, or Sony package includes one rather than assuming every turntable listing does. A cover helps keep dust away while the turntable is stored, but it does not replace routine cleaning.

6. Compare complete system cost, not just the deck
Prices, promotions, stock, and regional bundles change. A fair comparison includes the turntable, any required phono preamp, powered speakers or an amplifier and passive speakers, cables that are not included, and a future replacement stylus. A lower-priced deck can become the more expensive system if it needs several additional components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step setup
- Inventory the system. Confirm the turntable, output cable, dust cover, speakers or amplifier, and any required power supplies. If you selected an optional preamp configuration, verify that the preamp is actually listed on the order.
- Choose the signal mode. Set the AT-LP60X to LINE when feeding a line input, or PHONO when using an amplifier’s phono input. On a Fluance RT80 or RT81, select the internal-preamp mode for a line input and bypass it for a phono input. On the Orbit Plus, determine whether Pluto 2 was included; the no-preamp version must use a phono input or external phono stage.
- Connect the RCA cable. Attach the left and right plugs to the matching outputs and inputs. Connect to a line input when the turntable’s preamp is active. Do not connect an already-preamped signal to a phono input unless the equipment specifically permits that arrangement, because the signal would pass through phono equalization twice.
- Connect amplification. Plug the RCA cable into powered speakers, or into a line input on an amplifier/receiver that drives passive speakers. If you have passive speakers without an amplifier, stop here and add suitable amplification before playing a record.
- Position the turntable. Place it on a stable, level surface with room to open the dust cover and handle records. Keep the cable away from places where it can be pulled during playback.
- Prepare the record. Remove the record by its edges, place it on the platter, select 33-1/3 or 45 RPM as appropriate, and follow the turntable’s start or cue procedure. The AT-LP60X is fully automatic; the Orbit Plus uses manual speed selection and manual operation.
- Set listening volume low for the first test. Start playback, then raise the amplifier or powered-speaker level gradually. This makes it easier to catch a wrong input or mode before a loud burst reaches the speakers.
- Check the result. If the sound is extremely quiet, confirm that the internal preamp is active or that an external phono stage is present. If it is harsh, overloaded, or abnormally loud, check that a preamped output is not connected to PHONO.
Common mistakes and fixes
No sound at all
- Confirm that the speakers or amplifier are powered and set to the input receiving the RCA cable.
- Check both RCA plugs and the left/right channel connections.
- Verify that passive speakers are connected to an amplifier; a turntable cannot power them directly.
- On a configuration-sensitive model, confirm that the selected bundle includes the preamp you expected.
Very quiet playback
This usually means the signal is still at cartridge-level. Set the AT-LP60X to LINE, enable the internal preamp on a compatible Fluance model, select the Orbit Plus bundle with Pluto 2, or add an external phono stage. If your amplifier has a PHONO input, use that input with the turntable’s internal stage bypassed.
Distorted or excessively loud playback
Check for double amplification through two phono stages. A turntable set to LINE should feed a line input, not PHONO. A turntable set to PHONO should feed a phono input or external phono stage, not another active line-level preamp.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The turntable spins at the wrong speed
Recheck the 33-1/3 versus 45 RPM selection. The AT-LP60X provides both speeds. The Orbit Plus requires manual speed selection, so the setting must be changed by the listener. If a record’s label does not make the speed obvious, consult the record’s release information rather than guessing.
The stylus needs replacement
Do not order a generic stylus solely because it looks similar. For the AT-LP60X, Audio-Technica names ATN3600LC as the replacement stylus; verify the exact model and regional compatibility. For other cartridges, identify the installed cartridge and confirm the current replacement part with the manufacturer or an authorized seller.
The model listing is confusing
Read the configuration line, not just the family name. Look for the words built-in phono preamp, switchable phono/line, or Pluto 2 included. For Fluance, RT80 and RT81 differ from RT82–RT85 in this requirement. For Sony, distinguish PS-LX310BT from the newer PS-LX3BT and verify which one is actually sold in your region.
Maintenance that matters for a first system
- Keep records and the stylus free of visible dust; contamination can obscure the symptoms of a setup problem.
- Use the dust cover when the turntable is not in use. The AT-LP60X includes a hinged cover; confirm cover inclusion on other packages.
- Handle records by their edges and label area so fingerprints do not reach the playing surface.
- Keep a note of the cartridge and stylus model. This prevents an incorrect replacement order months or years later.
- Recheck the preamp switch after moving the system. A switch accidentally changed from LINE to PHONO can make a working setup appear defective.
A practical decision framework
| Your priority | Most directly documented fit | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum setup simplicity and automatic operation | Audio-Technica AT-LP60X | That the listing is the AT-LP60X version you want and that the ATN3600LC replacement stylus is available in your region |
| Internal preamp with the option to bypass it later | Fluance RT80 or RT81 | Current cartridge, bundle contents, and the preamp switch position |
| Manual operation and a selectable preamp bundle | U-Turn Orbit Plus with Pluto 2 | That Pluto 2 is included; the no-preamp configuration needs a phono input or external stage |
| A Sony-branded option | PS-LX310BT, subject to availability | Whether your region still sells that model or the newer PS-LX3BT, and the newer model’s official specifications |
| A higher Fluance Reference model | RT82–RT85 only if you accept an external phono stage or phono-equipped receiver | The added component, cable routing, and complete system cost |
What to verify when prices and stock change
Do not treat an old listing, a temporary promotion, or a product-family description as a permanent specification. Before placing an order, verify the exact model number, whether the preamp is built in or optional, the included output cable and cover, the cartridge or stylus supplied, the seller’s return terms, and delivery to your country. Compare like-for-like bundles and include speakers or amplification in the total.
For a first system, the most defensible short list is the AT-LP60X for automatic simplicity, RT80 or RT81 for an internal preamp that can later be bypassed, and the Orbit Plus only when the Pluto 2 option is deliberately selected. The Sony model requires a generation and region check, while RT82 through RT85 require a separate phono-stage plan.
