The simplest first turntable is the one whose output matches the input on the speakers or stereo you already own. For a straightforward wired setup, the fully automatic Audio-Technica AT-LP60X family is the easiest starting point. Choose the Bluetooth AT-LP60XBT variant when wireless playback matters. Choose Sony’s PS-LX310BT when you also want Bluetooth and USB alongside RCA cables.

Neither choice removes the need for speakers or amplification. Before ordering, identify whether your system has a PHONO input or a line-level input such as AUX. Then set the turntable’s output selector or preamp mode to match. The recommendations below are based on documented connection and convenience features, not a hands-on sound-quality or durability test.

Quick answer: which beginner turntable is easiest to set up?

Use this decision table before comparing anything else. The input on your stereo or speakers determines which connection will be genuinely low-fuss.

Audio-Technica AT-LP60X family A wired, automatic setup using RCA cables Fully automatic operation; 33 1/3 and 45 rpm; built-in phono equalizer; selectable PHONO or LINE output Decide between the wired and Bluetooth variants, check the exact regional bundle, and match the selector to your stereo input
Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT An AT-LP60X-style setup with Bluetooth available Bluetooth; built-in switchable preamp; replaceable stylus; integrated cartridge; cable and 45 rpm adapter listed on the regional product page Bluetooth availability and included accessories can vary by region; confirm your speakers or stereo also support the intended connection
Sony PS-LX310BT A beginner who wants Bluetooth and USB as well as a wired connection Automatic start, return and stop; Bluetooth; USB; RCA output; built-in phono preamp; 33 1/3 and 45 rpm It does not play 78 rpm records; Sony also documents a gain-selection setting and model-specific setup troubleshooting

If your only goal is to place a record on the platter, press start and listen through an existing AUX input, the wired AT-LP60X is the least complicated path. If running a cable is inconvenient, select a Bluetooth-capable model, but treat wireless pairing as an additional setup step rather than a replacement for checking the signal path.

What makes a turntable low-fuss?

Four design choices remove most of the decisions that make a first record player intimidating:

  • Automatic mechanics: start, return and stop functions reduce the need to position the tonearm manually and help prevent the stylus from running indefinitely at the end of a side.
  • A built-in phono preamp: records produce a low-level phono signal that requires equalization and amplification before a normal AUX input can use it. An integrated circuit performs that job inside the turntable.
  • A clear output choice: a PHONO/LINE selector lets one turntable work with either a dedicated PHONO input or a line-level input, provided you select the corresponding mode.
  • The connection you actually need: RCA is predictable and direct; Bluetooth avoids a signal cable; USB is useful only when your workflow includes a USB-equipped host. Extra outputs do not help if the receiving equipment cannot accept them.

Automatic operation and a built-in preamp simplify handling, but they do not replace playback equipment. You still need either powered speakers, which contain their own amplifier, or an amplifier/receiver connected to passive speakers.

PHONO versus LINE: the connection decision that prevents most problems

A turntable and an audio system must agree on signal level. A PHONO input expects the low-level, equalized-by-the-receiver signal from a cartridge. An AUX, LINE, or similar input expects a higher line-level signal, normally supplied by a phono preamp.

When to select PHONO

Use PHONO mode when the receiving stereo or amplifier has a dedicated PHONO input. Connect the turntable’s RCA leads to that PHONO input and set the turntable’s selector to PHONO. In this arrangement, the external equipment performs the phono amplification and equalization.

When to select LINE

Use LINE mode when connecting to AUX or another line-level input. The AT-LP60X’s built-in phono equalizer is intended for this kind of connection, and the selector must be set to LINE. A built-in or in-line phono preamp is likewise required when a stereo has no PHONO input.

Why the wrong setting sounds wrong

A line-level output sent into PHONO is amplified again and can be excessively loud or distorted. A phono-level output sent into AUX is too weak and lacks the required equalization, so it may sound extremely quiet and thin. If there is no PHONO input, do not leave the turntable in PHONO mode unless a separate phono preamp sits between the turntable and the AUX input.

Sony’s connection guidance states the same rule in practical terms: if a PHONO input is unavailable, the turntable must have a built-in amplifier or an in-line amplifier must be used before connecting to another stereo input.

Audio-Technica AT-LP60X family: the simplest wired route

The AT-LP60X family is designed around automatic playback at 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. Its built-in phono equalizer and PHONO/LINE selector mean you can connect to either a dedicated PHONO input or a normal line-level input, as long as the selector and receiving input agree.

Why it suits a first system

There is no manual cueing decision for ordinary playback: the automatic mechanism handles the start sequence and returns the tonearm when the side finishes. The RCA connection is familiar, and the two-speed control covers the 33 1/3 and 45 rpm records used by this model family.

What changes with the AT-LP60XBT

The AT-LP60XBT adds Bluetooth to the AT-LP60X-style automatic workflow. Its product information also lists a built-in switchable preamp, an integrated cartridge, a replaceable stylus, an included cable and a 45 rpm adapter. Those accessory details are tied to the regional product page, so verify the exact package sold in your market rather than assuming every regional box contains identical items.

Bluetooth is an option, not a requirement. You can still use the wired output when your speakers or amplifier are located nearby. If you select wireless playback, check that the receiving speaker or stereo supports the Bluetooth connection profile expected by the turntable and follow the exact pairing procedure in the model manual.

First-use preparation

The AT-LP60X manual gives one unusual but important setup instruction: rotate the platter by hand ten times during preparation. This resets the automatic mechanism and helps ensure that the belt rides correctly. Perform that step before judging the turntable’s start behavior; skipping it can make a correctly designed mechanism appear faulty.

Sony PS-LX310BT: the flexible Bluetooth and USB option

The PS-LX310BT combines automatic start, return and stop with RCA output, Bluetooth and USB. It includes a built-in phono preamp, so it can feed a line-level input without an external preamp when configured according to Sony’s instructions. It supports 33 1/3 and 45 rpm records.

When its extra connections matter

Choose this model when you have a concrete reason to use Bluetooth or USB, not simply because a longer feature list looks better. Bluetooth can place the turntable away from the listening position when the receiving audio equipment supports it. USB is relevant when your setup includes a compatible USB host and you intend to use that connection; it does not make ordinary RCA or speaker connections unnecessary.

Important speed limitation

Sony’s support FAQ, last modified February 4, 2026, explicitly states that the PS-LX310BT cannot play 78 rpm records. If your collection includes shellac 78s, this model is not a suitable single-player solution. The same limitation should be treated as a buying check rather than something to discover after unpacking.

Gain and troubleshooting controls

Sony documents a gain-selection setting for the PS-LX310BT. Use the setting prescribed for your connected equipment and consult the model’s troubleshooting instructions if output is unexpectedly quiet, loud or distorted. Do not compensate for a PHONO/LINE mismatch by turning the gain control to an extreme position; correct the signal path first.

Do you need a phono preamp for a turntable?

You need phono preamplification somewhere in the chain, but you may not need a separate box. A turntable with a built-in phono preamp or equalizer can send line-level output to AUX or LINE. A stereo with a PHONO input contains the necessary stage and can accept phono-level output directly.

Three workable system layouts

Turntable output Receiving equipment Correct arrangement
PHONO Amplifier or receiver with PHONO input RCA from the turntable to PHONO; select PHONO on a turntable that has an output selector
LINE Powered speakers with AUX/LINE input RCA from the turntable to the speaker input; select LINE
LINE Amplifier/receiver with AUX or another line input RCA to the line input; select LINE, then connect the amplifier to passive speakers

A powered-speaker system places amplification inside the speakers. Passive speakers cannot be connected directly to a turntable’s RCA output; they require an amplifier or receiver between the turntable and the speakers.

Can you connect a turntable to powered speakers?

Yes, provided the speakers have a compatible input and the turntable supplies the level that input expects. The common low-fuss arrangement is a built-in-preamp turntable in LINE mode connected to the powered speakers’ AUX or LINE input with RCA cables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the powered speakers expose only a different connector, use an appropriate, correctly wired adapter only when the speaker manufacturer documents that input as line-level. Do not assume that every socket labeled with a similar word accepts the same signal. If the speakers have no suitable line input, an amplifier or a different speaker system is required.

Step-by-step setup for a first listening session

  1. Inventory the playback system. Identify whether you have powered speakers or an amplifier/receiver with passive speakers. Locate the exact input label: PHONO, AUX, LINE, or another documented line input.
  2. Choose the signal path. Plan RCA wiring for the most predictable connection. Choose Bluetooth only if both devices support it and the convenience of eliminating the cable is worth pairing another device. Choose USB only when you have a compatible USB host and a reason to use it.
  3. Set the output mode before playing. For a PHONO input, use PHONO mode. For AUX or LINE, use LINE mode on a turntable that provides that selector or built-in preamp. Keep the amplifier volume low while making the connection.
  4. Connect the equipment. Attach the turntable’s RCA output to the selected input, or follow the model manual for Bluetooth or USB setup. Connect powered speakers directly to the turntable’s line output, or connect an amplifier/receiver before passive speakers.
  5. Complete model-specific preparation. For an AT-LP60X, rotate the platter by hand ten times as directed in the manual so the automatic mechanism resets and the belt seats correctly. Follow the exact manual for any remaining transport, tonearm or cartridge preparation.
  6. Select the record speed. Set 33 1/3 for a standard long-playing record or 45 for a compatible single or EP. Neither cited family is documented here as supporting 78 rpm; the Sony PS-LX310BT is explicitly limited to 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.
  7. Start playback. Place the record carefully, select the documented automatic start control, and raise the speaker or amplifier volume gradually. Confirm that the stylus is tracking and that the sound is coming from the intended speakers.
  8. Use the automatic return. Allow the mechanism to complete its return or stop cycle. Avoid forcing the tonearm by hand while the automatic mechanism is operating.
  9. Label your working setup. Once the system works, note the input used and the turntable mode that matched it. This small record prevents the most common mistake when reconnecting the equipment later.

Common problems and precise fixes

No sound at all

  • Confirm the amplifier or powered speakers are on and set to the input receiving the turntable.
  • Check that both RCA plugs are fully inserted and that the correct left and right channels are connected.
  • Verify the turntable is not in PHONO mode when connected to AUX or LINE. If there is no PHONO input, a built-in or in-line phono preamp must be active.
  • For Bluetooth, confirm that the receiving device is the one actually selected and that another previously paired source has not taken the connection.

Sound is extremely quiet or thin

This usually indicates a phono-level signal feeding AUX or LINE without an active phono preamp. Set an AT-LP60X selector to LINE, or insert a suitable in-line phono preamp. If the turntable is correctly set to LINE, check the amplifier’s input selection and volume before changing anything else.

Sound is loud, harsh or distorted

This commonly results from sending a line-level signal into a PHONO input, which applies phono amplification a second time. Change the receiving input to AUX or LINE and use LINE mode only when the turntable’s built-in preamp is handling the signal. On the PS-LX310BT, also review Sony’s documented gain setting after the input type is correct.

The platter or automatic cycle behaves incorrectly

For the AT-LP60X, repeat the manual’s ten-hand-rotations preparation step and check that the belt rides correctly. Then use the exact model instructions rather than forcing the tonearm. If an automatic cycle still fails, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A record plays at the wrong speed

Check the 33 1/3 or 45 selector before changing any other setting. A 78 rpm record cannot be made compatible by switching between those two positions; the PS-LX310BT does not support 78 rpm, and the cited AT-LP60X models are documented for 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.

Bluetooth will not connect

  • Put the turntable and receiver into their documented pairing modes.
  • Move the devices close together during the first pairing attempt.
  • Disconnect another device that may already be using the receiver’s Bluetooth connection.
  • If wired RCA works but Bluetooth does not, the cartridge and phono path are probably not the issue; concentrate on pairing, input selection and the receiver’s Bluetooth state.

How to choose between the two options

Choose the AT-LP60X wired model when

  • Your speakers or amplifier sit close enough for an RCA cable.
  • You want the fewest connection decisions and do not need Bluetooth or USB.
  • Your records are 33 1/3 or 45 rpm and you value automatic operation.
  • You want the option to use either a PHONO input or a line-level input through the selector.

Choose the AT-LP60XBT when

  • You prefer the AT-LP60X family’s automatic workflow but need Bluetooth as an alternative to RCA.
  • A replaceable stylus is an important serviceability feature.
  • You have confirmed the regional package and the receiving Bluetooth equipment.

Choose the Sony PS-LX310BT when

  • You specifically need Bluetooth and USB in addition to RCA.
  • Automatic start, return and stop are useful to your routine.
  • You are satisfied with 33 1/3 and 45 rpm and do not need 78 rpm playback.
  • You want Sony’s documented gain-selection and troubleshooting controls available for setup.

What else should a beginner verify?

Speakers and amplification

Budget for the complete playback chain, not just the turntable. Powered speakers are the shortest route because the amplifier is built into the speaker enclosure. With passive speakers, add an amplifier or receiver and make sure its input matches the turntable’s PHONO or LINE output.

Stylus replacement

The AT-LP60XBT product information lists a replaceable stylus. Treat replacement parts as model-specific: confirm the exact regional model and stylus compatibility before ordering. Do not assume a stylus for one AT-LP60X-family variant fits every other variant.

Included accessories and regional packaging

The AT-LP60XBT regional product page lists a cable and 45 rpm adapter, but accessories can differ by market. Check the exact manufacturer listing for your country and confirm what is in the box before buying separate accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for a low-fuss first system

Start with the input on your speakers or stereo, then select the turntable that provides the matching output and the convenience features you will use. The AT-LP60X is the straightforward wired automatic choice; the AT-LP60XBT adds Bluetooth; and the Sony PS-LX310BT is the broader Bluetooth-and-USB alternative. Set PHONO to PHONO, LINE to AUX or LINE, provide the required amplifier or powered speakers, and check record-speed support before placing an order.
