For a first small game, choose a 2D project and match the engine to your comfort with code. Godot is the strongest fit if you want to learn scripting through a complete first-game tutorial. GDevelop is the better starting point if you want visual, no-code logic with JavaScript available later. GameMaker is a practical 2D-focused alternative with a free starting tier. None is a universal winner: your programming background, target platform, project scope and licensing needs should decide.

What “beginner-friendly” should mean

An engine is not beginner-friendly merely because its editor looks simple. For a first project, evaluate the complete path from an empty project to a playable build:

  • Learning route: Is there a guided, complete project rather than disconnected feature documentation?
  • Logic model: Will you write code, assemble visual events, or use both?
  • First-project scope: Can the engine handle a small 2D game without making you learn unnecessary systems?
  • Publishing target: Does it support the desktop, web or mobile destination you actually need?
  • Terms and cost: Is there a free path, and what changes when you publish commercially or export to a particular platform?

The comparison below is based on those practical questions, not on a claimed universal ranking. The official materials do not establish a controlled test of learning speed or a reliable “easiest engine” score.

Start with a deliberately small 2D game

Your first game should have one mechanic, one win condition and a finishable play session. A top-down collector, one-screen platformer, brick breaker or simple arcade dodger is a better learning project than an open-world role-playing game or online multiplayer title.

Godot’s first-2D-game documentation explicitly tells newcomers to begin with 2D because 3D games tend to be more complicated. That advice applies broadly: 2D reduces the number of systems you must understand at once, including camera behavior, lighting, 3D transforms, animation rigs and spatial audio.

Keep the first specification short:

  • One playable character or controllable object.
  • One movement model.
  • One obstacle, enemy or collectible type.
  • One scoring, health or timer rule.
  • One success state and one failure state.
  • A restart button and a way to close or return to a title screen.

Use placeholder shapes and sounds until the game works. Art production can consume more time than engine learning, and replacing a sprite is much easier than debugging a half-built game whose rules are still changing.

Godot: best for learning to code while building 2D games

Why it suits a first project

Godot’s official documentation provides a complete first-2D-game tutorial rather than asking you to assemble unrelated lessons. The tutorial walks through the structure of a small game and introduces scripting as part of the build. The official introduction also presents both GDScript and C# examples, giving you a path to continue if you already know C# or want to learn Godot’s commonly demonstrated scripting language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Godot Engine’s official documentation describes the software as “completely free and open source under the permissive MIT license.” That makes it a straightforward starting point for experimenting, sharing a project and learning without a subscription decision at the beginning.

What you will learn

A scripted Godot project teaches concepts that transfer to other engines: variables, functions, input handling, scenes or reusable objects, collision detection, signals or events, and game-state changes. You will need to read and modify code, even when the first tutorial supplies much of it. That makes Godot a better fit for a learner who is willing to type code and understand what each section does.

Where the learning curve appears

The first-game tutorial states that it assumes some programming experience. A complete novice should begin with the preceding getting-started material instead of copying the game tutorial line by line. Learn the editor layout, how scenes and nodes are organized, how scripts attach to objects, and how to run a project before adding extra features.

If a menu, property or code example does not match, check the version selector before changing your project structure.

Export and cost considerations

Official Godot material describes export to desktop, mobile, web and consoles. “Supported” does not mean every destination is equally simple or free: console deployment can involve platform-holder access, approval and additional tools. Confirm the current export requirements for your target before committing to a commercial release.

Choose Godot when

  • You want your first project to teach programming, not only game design.
  • You prefer a complete, code-first 2D tutorial.
  • You want an open-source engine with a free starting path.
  • You may move from 2D into 3D after learning the basics.

GDevelop: best for a no-code on-ramp

How its event system works

GDevelop organizes gameplay logic as events made from conditions and actions. A condition checks something such as “the player overlaps a coin” or “the timer has reached zero”; an action responds by changing a score, moving an object, playing a sound or switching scenes. This visual model lets you build a working rule before learning conventional syntax.

The official beginner material points new users toward basic game-making concepts and guided tutorials. JavaScript is available as an optional extension, so you can start visually and add code only when the event system is no longer sufficient for a particular behavior.

Why it works for a first game

Visual events make cause and effect easy to inspect. A beginner can open an event, read its conditions from top to bottom and see the actions that follow. That can reduce the initial intimidation of a blank script file, especially for a player who has designed a game on paper but has never programmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not remove the need to learn logic. You still need to understand state, object names, ordering, collision rules, timers and debugging. The no-code route is an alternative interface for programming ideas, not a promise that complex games require no technical thinking.

Export and tier caveats

GDevelop’s official materials describe 2D and 3D projects and routes for HTML5, desktop, Android and iOS. The iOS path refers to development tools, and publication capabilities can depend on the plan you choose. The product page’s plans and export features are subject to change, so verify the current limits for your target before building around a particular publishing workflow.

The platform also describes an Asset Store containing free and premium packs. Treat these as optional resources: placeholder art is enough for a first prototype, and an asset pack does not solve design, licensing or performance decisions automatically.

Choose GDevelop when

  • You want to make a playable prototype without writing code first.
  • You learn best from visible conditions and actions.
  • You want the option to add JavaScript later rather than committing to it on day one.
  • Your initial target is web, desktop or a mobile route documented for your current plan.

GameMaker: a practical 2D-focused option

Why beginners consider it

GameMaker’s official site promotes free tutorials and a free tier for making a first game. Its focus on 2D makes it a sensible match for a small platformer, top-down game, puzzle or arcade project. The important distinction is that a free starting tier is not the same as every commercial or export right being free.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Learning route

The reviewed product material confirms free tutorials and the free tier, but it does not establish a specific step-by-step tutorial sequence comparable to Godot’s complete first-2D-game lesson. Before starting, open the current beginner learning material and confirm that it matches your installed version and preferred workflow.

GameMaker supports a code-oriented workflow as well as editor-driven tools. Decide early whether you want to learn scripting, visual room and object setup, or a combination. Switching approaches halfway through a small project can create confusion if the same behavior is implemented in two different places.

Documented platforms

The official product page lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Platform availability, required licenses and publishing steps can differ by destination. Check the current professional or commercial terms before promising a console or paid release.

Decision guide: pick by your starting point

If this describes you Start by evaluating Reason
I want to learn programming while making a game. Godot Its official path centers on a complete scripted 2D game and introduces programming concepts directly.
I want to avoid code at first. GDevelop Conditions and actions provide a visual logic system, with JavaScript available later.
I know I want a 2D-focused workflow and a free starting tier. GameMaker Its official materials emphasize 2D, free tutorials and a free tier.
I am unsure whether I will publish to mobile or console. Compare the current export and licensing pages for all three. Feature lists do not prove that a destination is equally easy, free or available on every tier.
I want to make a 3D game immediately. Reduce the scope first, then test a small prototype in an engine whose current documentation matches your target. The beginner evidence here supports a 2D-first path; a large first 3D project multiplies systems and failure points.

A first-project workflow that works in any of the three engines

1. Write the one-sentence rule

Use a sentence such as: “Move the character, collect ten items before the timer expires, and restart when the character is hit.” If you cannot state the rule clearly, the project is not ready for an engine.

2. Create only the minimum objects

Make a player, one obstacle or collectible, a boundary, a score or timer and two game states: playing and finished. Do not begin with menus, achievements, inventory, online accounts or procedural generation.

3. Build movement before art

Use a colored rectangle, circle or temporary sprite. Verify that input moves the player at a controllable speed and that the player cannot leave the intended play area. This isolates input and collision problems from asset problems.

4. Add one interaction

Implement a single collision or overlap rule. When it works, display a visible result such as a score increment, object removal, health reduction or sound. If the result is not visible, debugging becomes guesswork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Add win and loss states

Define the exact threshold: a score, a timer value, a number of hits or a destination reached. Stop accepting normal gameplay input when the round ends, show the outcome and provide a restart action.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

6. Test a packaged build early

Run the game outside the editor before adding polish. A project that works only in an editor preview may still have missing assets, incorrect file paths, input differences or export restrictions. Repeat this check whenever you change scenes or add external files.

7. Add polish last

Only after the complete loop works should you add sound, particles, animation, screen transitions and custom artwork. Keep a copy of the last working build so a new effect cannot erase your progress.

Common beginner pitfalls and fixes

Starting with a dream project

Symptom: You have a design document but no playable minute. Fix: Cut the game to one screen, one mechanic and one kind of opponent or collectible. Save the larger idea as a future roadmap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Following a tutorial for the wrong version

Symptom: Menu labels, properties or code do not match. Fix: Confirm the engine version and use stable documentation where available. Godot’s “latest” tutorial can include features not present in a released stable version.

Copying code or events without understanding state

Symptom: A rule works once, then fails after restart or scene changes. Fix: Write down which values reset, which object owns each value and which event runs first. Make the playing, won and lost states explicit.

Adding assets before proving the mechanic

Symptom: You spend hours searching for art while the game still has no reliable win condition. Fix: Use placeholders, then replace them one category at a time. Check each asset’s license before distribution.

Assuming an export list guarantees a free release

Symptom: The editor supports a platform, but the required export, store or commercial step is unavailable on your tier. Fix: Check the current plan, platform requirements and commercial terms before committing to that destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making the first game 3D or online

Symptom: Camera, networking, physics and content problems arrive at once. Fix: Finish an offline 2D prototype first. Treat multiplayer, persistent accounts and complex 3D as separate learning projects.

Checklist before you commit

  • Can you name the first game’s single core mechanic?
  • Do you prefer writing scripts, arranging visual events, or a mixture?
  • Does the engine have beginner material that matches its current version?
  • Is your intended target desktop, web, Android, iOS or a console?
  • Have you checked whether that target requires a paid tier, additional development tools or platform approval?
  • Can you finish a playable prototype using placeholder assets?
  • Do you understand the license for any art, sound or extension you plan to ship?

Bottom line

Choose Godot for the clearest code-learning path and a complete official 2D tutorial. Choose GDevelop when visual conditions and actions are the right first interface and you want JavaScript available as an upgrade. Choose GameMaker when your goal is a focused 2D workflow with a free way to begin. In every case, make the first project small, verify the current export and licensing terms for your destination, and finish one complete game before expanding its scope.
