The best bank depends on the job. A straightforward probate estate may need only a properly titled, FDIC-insured estate account and responsive estate-services staff. Ongoing distributions, multiple beneficiaries, tax coordination, charitable intentions, or family governance usually justify interviewing a bank trust department or private-client fiduciary team. Account ownership and beneficiary designations—not a will by itself—determine how deposits transfer and how FDIC insurance is calculated.

Choose the service model before choosing a bank

“Best bank” is not a single ranking for inherited money. First decide whether you need a temporary account for an estate, a place to hold inherited cash, investment custody, or a fiduciary that will administer a trust and make distributions for years.

A basic estate account

An ordinary bank’s estate-account process can be sufficient when an executor is collecting assets, paying valid debts and taxes, and distributing the remainder once. The account should be titled for the estate and controlled by the legally authorized personal representative. It is a cash-management tool, not a substitute for probate advice, tax advice, or a trustee’s discretionary judgment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A corporate trustee

A bank trust department becomes more useful when a trust must continue after probate. A corporate trustee can, if appointed and authorized under the governing document, keep records, invest or custody assets, calculate and approve distributions, issue beneficiary statements, coordinate with tax professionals, and apply consistent rules when family members disagree. The bank must confirm in writing which powers it will accept; a “trust services” label does not automatically mean the institution will take every fiduciary appointment.

A private-client relationship

Private banking is broader than a trust department. It may combine deposit accounts, lending, investment management, estate-planning coordination, philanthropy, and a dedicated service team. It can be appropriate when an inheritance is large or complicated, but FDIC insurance still applies only to eligible deposit accounts. Securities and other investments held through a wealth platform are not automatically FDIC-insured.

Ownership and beneficiary designations control the result

Before moving inherited money, obtain a complete list of how each account was owned: individual, joint, payable-on-death, transfer-on-death, or trust-owned. The account contract and its beneficiary designation normally control the bank’s transfer process. A will directs probate assets; it does not by itself rewrite a joint-owner arrangement, a payable-on-death designation, or a trust instrument.

A decedent’s single-owner deposit account is generally treated as the deceased owner’s account for FDIC purposes. A surviving joint owner, named beneficiary, or trust can produce a different ownership category and a different insurance calculation. Ask the bank’s estate unit to identify the ownership category for every account before consolidating funds.

Documents and authority

Requirements vary by state and bank. An estate department may request a certified death certificate, probate or court appointment papers, identification for the executor or administrator, tax-identification information, and the governing trust or beneficiary documents. Ask for the institution’s written checklist and whether originals, certified copies, notarization, or an apostille are required. Do not assume that a branch employee can approve an unusual estate transaction; request an escalation path to the bank’s estate or fiduciary operations team.

How FDIC coverage works after a death

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s 2024 brochure explains the applicable trust-ownership calculation as $250,000 per beneficiary. The rule is applied by ownership category and institution, not simply by counting every account in a household. Read the FDIC insured-deposit brochure with the bank’s deposit-operations specialist.

Situation Figure or treatment What to verify
Trust ownership calculation $250,000 per beneficiary under the applicable FDIC trust-account rules Who the legal owner is, which beneficiaries are recognized, and whether the account is revocable or irrevocable
One trust owner with five or more beneficiaries The 2024 FDIC brochure gives a maximum of $1,250,000 at one bank The number and eligibility of beneficiaries and whether the account structure matches the rule
Two owners with three beneficiaries The FDIC Trust Accounts guidance gives a $1,500,000 example That the two owners and three beneficiaries are actually reflected in the account records
Death of an account owner FDIC generally continues the existing insurance treatment for six months after death The date the six-month period starts, any changes caused by a surviving owner, and the bank’s post-death titling plan

The six-month continuation is a planning window, not permanent extra insurance. The FDIC guidance on the death of an account owner explains the treatment. Use the period to open an estate account, retitle or distribute deposits, and document a long-term structure rather than leaving a large balance in a temporary arrangement.

A practical coverage worksheet

  1. List every deposit account, the legal owner shown on the statement, the bank or banking subsidiary, and the current balance.
  2. Mark the ownership category and named beneficiaries exactly as the bank records them; do not rely on a family member’s recollection.
  3. Aggregate accounts in the same ownership category at the same insured institution.
  4. Apply the relevant FDIC calculation and identify any amount that needs a different ownership category, institution, or investment decision.
  5. Ask the bank to review the worksheet in writing and retain the response with the estate file.

Spreading cash across accounts at one institution does not necessarily create separate insurance. Conversely, moving funds without preserving the intended ownership can reduce coverage. Deposits are covered only when they are eligible deposit products; a brokerage or wealth platform can hold investments that fall outside FDIC deposit insurance.

Shortlist of bank and fiduciary programs

Program What the published material supports Best reason to interview it Important qualification
Wells Fargo Private Wealth Trust and Estate Services The official service page describes tailored solutions for wealth and estate plans, legacy and charitable intentions, tax considerations, and family dynamics. A starting point for a complex inheritance requiring a trust-and-estate conversation rather than a basic deposit account. Confirm state availability, whether the bank will accept the proposed fiduciary appointment, investment authority, distribution standard, minimum assets, and every fee.
Citigold Private Client A 2026 Kiplinger comparison reports eligibility at an average monthly balance of $1 million in qualifying accounts and describes expanded legacy, estate-planning, and gifting services. Potential fit for a high-balance household seeking coordinated private-client advice. The threshold and benefits are time-sensitive. Verify the current qualification method, excluded balances, service geography, and pricing directly with Citi.
Bank of America and other national private-client programs Kiplinger comparisons from 2025 and 2026 identify high-balance programs with dedicated advice, fee waivers, and wealth-management or investment support. A screening category when branch reach, digital access, lending, and investment support matter alongside estate administration. The comparisons are not current disclosures. Obtain the institution’s present schedule of fees, minimums, fiduciary powers, and deposit-insurance procedures.

These names are interview candidates, not a universal ranking. A regional bank, independent trust company, or specialist corporate trustee may be better if it has the right state authority, a lower minimum, or a team experienced with the exact trust language in your documents.

Comparison framework for private-client and trust departments

Use the following questions in every interview. “Not stated” means the available published material does not establish a comparable term; request the current answer in writing.

Decision axis Wells Fargo Private Wealth Trust and Estate Services Citigold Private Client Bank of America or another national private-client program
Estate-account opening process Estate and trust service is described; exact documents, timing, and state procedures are not stated. Not stated; ask for the estate-unit checklist and expected review time. Not stated; confirm whether a branch can begin the process or must refer it to a centralized team.
Corporate-trust and fiduciary powers Trust-and-estate solutions are described; the precise powers accepted for a particular instrument are not stated. Legacy and estate-planning support is described; corporate-trust acceptance is not stated. Wealth-management support is described in comparisons; fiduciary powers are not stated.
Inherited-IRA beneficiary support Not stated; ask who handles beneficiary retitling, distribution scheduling, and tax reporting coordination. Not stated; obtain a written service map for inherited retirement accounts. Not stated; distinguish investment advice from operational processing and tax coordination.
Minimum assets Not stated in the available service description. Kiplinger’s 2026 comparison reports a $1 million average monthly balance in qualifying accounts; verify current terms. Exact minimums vary by program and are not stated here.
Ongoing fiduciary and advisory fees Not stated; request the full fiduciary, investment, custody, extraordinary-service, and termination-fee schedule. Not stated; ask whether advisory pricing is separate from trust-account fees. Not stated; request both published and negotiated charges.
FDIC coverage handling Ask for a deposit-operations review by ownership category and a written restructuring plan. Ask how qualifying balances are aggregated and how the six-month death-of-owner period is administered. Ask whether the program uses one or several insured bank entities and how balances are reported.
Branch and digital access Exact branch, portal, secure-message, and document-delivery options are not stated. Not stated; test access for an executor who needs records and approvals. Not stated; confirm who can authorize wires, view statements, and resolve identity checks.
Investment custody Wealth solutions are described; custody arrangements and product menu are not stated. Investment support is part of the private-client proposition; custody terms are not stated. Investment support is identified in comparisons; confirm registration, custody, and conflicts.
Distribution controls Ask whether the proposed trust standard can be administered, documented, and audited. Not stated; require a sample distribution workflow and approval matrix. Not stated; ask about discretionary decisions, beneficiary notices, and exception handling.
Escalation path Ask for named estate-operations, fiduciary, legal, and relationship-management contacts. Ask who owns an unresolved beneficiary or tax-reporting issue. Ask for a written chain from branch or advisor to estate operations and fiduciary review.

Opening and funding an estate account

The exact sequence differs by state and institution, but a disciplined process prevents ownership and coverage mistakes.

  1. Notify the bank and request the estate checklist. Tell the institution whether you are an executor, administrator, successor trustee, or beneficiary. Ask for the dedicated estate-services contact rather than submitting an ordinary online checking application.
  2. Establish legal authority. Provide the documents the bank requests to prove death and appointment. Confirm whether the account will be titled in the estate’s legal name and whose signatures are required.
  3. Obtain the estate tax identification information when required. Ask the bank and the estate’s tax professional which taxpayer identification number belongs on the account and reporting forms.
  4. Separate estate cash from personal cash. Deposit proceeds payable to the estate into the estate account. Do not mix them with an executor’s household account or with a beneficiary’s personal inheritance.
  5. Map every incoming and outgoing payment. Record sale proceeds, refunds, taxes, court costs, debts, and approved distributions. Use dual approval or a second review for wires when the bank offers it.
  6. Review FDIC ownership before a large transfer. A temporary estate balance can be insured differently from the decedent’s former account. Have deposit operations confirm the treatment and the six-month deadline.
  7. Close or retitle the account only after final obligations are met. Retain statements, cancelled checks, tax forms, distribution receipts, and the bank’s final balance confirmation with the estate records.

Handling inherited cash above the FDIC limit

Do not start by chasing a promotional yield. Start by preserving legal ownership and insurance. A useful order of operations is:

  • Keep a liquidity reserve for known taxes, debts, court costs, and near-term beneficiary payments.
  • Ask whether the funds are still in the decedent’s ownership category, have become estate property, or have transferred to named beneficiaries.
  • Use the FDIC trust-account calculation only when the account is genuinely owned and documented as a qualifying trust account.
  • Consider separate insured institutions or different lawful ownership categories only after a fiduciary or deposit specialist confirms the result.
  • Document every transfer, the receiving account’s title, and the reason for the change.

The $250,000-per-beneficiary figure is not a blanket promise that every beneficiary receives that amount in every situation. The owner, beneficiary eligibility, account records, and aggregation rules matter. The six-month post-death period should be treated as time to restructure, not as permission to leave an unmanaged concentration indefinitely.

Inherited IRAs and retirement plans need a separate workflow

An inherited IRA is not simply another estate checking balance. IRS distribution obligations depend on the beneficiary category and the type of retirement account. A bank can make the process easier by assigning a beneficiary-services specialist, retitling the account correctly, scheduling required distributions, and coordinating information with the estate’s tax professional.

Ask each candidate these operational questions:

  • Who verifies the beneficiary designation and the account type before any transfer?
  • Can the bank establish an inherited account without commingling it with the beneficiary’s own IRA?
  • Who calculates or documents the required distribution schedule, and what is the review process if tax rules or facts are uncertain?
  • How are withholding elections, tax forms, and year-end statements delivered?
  • What happens when several beneficiaries need separate accounts or different distribution timing?

Use a qualified tax professional for the legal tax interpretation. Bank staff can execute account and payment instructions, but a private-client relationship should never be treated as a replacement for tax advice.

Managing multiple beneficiaries and family expectations

Families usually need more than a payment button. Ask how the institution will turn the governing document into repeatable administration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distribution standards

Determine whether payments are mandatory, subject to an ascertainable standard, or discretionary. The trustee should be able to explain what evidence is required, who approves an exception, and how the decision is recorded. If the bank will not accept a particular standard, identify that before appointment.

Timing and liquidity

Build a calendar for recurring payments, tax estimates, tuition or medical requests, and extraordinary distributions. Keep enough cash available without forcing an avoidable sale of long-term investments.

Reporting and privacy

Clarify which beneficiaries receive statements, what information can be shared with co-trustees, and how secure messages and document delivery work. A written reporting policy reduces disputes over whether one beneficiary received preferential information.

Family governance

For a family trust, ask whether the team can coordinate family meetings, philanthropy, education for younger beneficiaries, and successor-trustee planning. These services may be advisory rather than fiduciary, so the engagement letter should identify who is responsible for each decision.

Fees, minimums, and service commitments

Published private-bank comparisons often emphasize access and benefits, while the costs that matter to an estate appear in a separate schedule. Request a complete quote that distinguishes:

  • one-time estate-account or extraordinary-service charges;
  • annual corporate-trust or directed-trust fees;
  • investment-management percentages and minimums;
  • custody, wire, check, tax-preparation, and document fees;
  • termination, successor-trustee, and account-transfer charges; and
  • fees charged by affiliated providers or funds.

Ask what happens if assets fall below a minimum, a beneficiary moves to another state, or the trust becomes too small for the bank’s standard service. A low advertised threshold is not useful if the institution will not accept your state’s fiduciary appointment or charges separately for every distribution review.

Questions to ask before appointing a bank

  1. Will you serve as trustee, successor trustee, executor, agent, investment manager, or only as custodian?
  2. Which fiduciary powers and distribution standards in my document will you accept?
  3. Who is the day-to-day contact, and who has authority to resolve an operational error?
  4. What are the minimum assets, all-in fees, and extraordinary-service charges?
  5. How will you title each account and document FDIC coverage?
  6. How do you handle inherited IRAs, beneficiary retitling, withholding, and tax-form delivery?
  7. Can beneficiaries receive scheduled payments, emergency distributions, and secure statements through the same workflow?
  8. What investment products, custody arrangements, and conflicts should the family understand?
  9. How often will you report performance, cash, fees, and distribution decisions?
  10. What is the complaint and escalation process if an executor, trustee, or beneficiary disputes a decision?

Common failure modes and fixes

Relying on the will to fix an account title

Failure: The family assumes the will controls a payable-on-death or joint account. Fix: Have the bank inventory the contract ownership and beneficiary designation before distributing funds.

Leaving a large balance in a temporary account

Failure: The executor treats the six-month FDIC continuation as a permanent solution. Fix: Set a restructuring deadline, obtain a written coverage review, and retitle or distribute funds deliberately.

Assuming all platform assets are FDIC-insured

Failure: A family counts securities or other investments as insured deposits. Fix: Identify which holdings are eligible deposits and which are investments with different protections.

Treating an inherited IRA like ordinary cash

Failure: A beneficiary withdraws or retitles funds without checking the applicable distribution obligations. Fix: Pause the transaction, involve a tax professional, and use the bank’s inherited-retirement-account team.

Choosing on brand recognition alone

Failure: The family selects a famous national program without checking state authority, minimums, staffing, or escalation. Fix: Score finalists against fiduciary powers, beneficiary operations, coverage handling, fees, access, and service commitments.

A decision path for common estate situations

One owner, one or two beneficiaries, short probate

Interview the bank where the decedent already held deposits and at least one alternative. Prioritize an accurate estate-account title, fast document review, clean payment records, and an FDIC coverage plan. A full corporate trustee may add cost without solving a problem that ends at final distribution.

Several beneficiaries with scheduled payments

Favor a fiduciary team that can administer a distribution calendar, maintain separate beneficiary records, and explain discretionary decisions. Compare the fee schedule and reporting package, not just the relationship manager’s availability.

Complex trust, charitable intentions, or family governance

Interview corporate trustees and private-client teams together. Confirm investment authority, tax coordination, successor planning, conflict procedures, and whether the bank will accept the exact trust language. The published description of Wells Fargo Private Wealth Trust and Estate Services, for example, specifically addresses legacy and charitable intentions, tax considerations, and family dynamics; those are useful topics for any finalist to address.

Large inherited cash balance awaiting a long-term plan

Use the six-month FDIC period to build the ownership worksheet, preserve liquidity, and obtain written advice from deposit operations. Do not let a private-bank investment proposal obscure the separate question of how much cash is insured.

Bottom line

For a simple estate, the best bank is the one that correctly opens and administers the estate account, keeps records, and helps you restructure deposits before the post-death FDIC period ends. For a continuing trust or a family with multiple beneficiaries, choose the institution that will accept the required fiduciary powers, provide transparent fees, manage beneficiary distributions, support inherited-retirement-account operations, and document deposit coverage. Treat current thresholds and perks— including the reported $1 million Citigold Private Client balance qualification—as changeable terms to verify directly, not as permanent rankings.
