Logitech MX Keys S for Mac is the strongest match for an iMac user who specifically wants illuminated keys. It has a dedicated Mac layout, proximity-activated backlighting, an ambient-light sensor and seven brightness levels. The lighting is not permanently on: Logitech disables it in bright conditions and when the battery is low. If Touch ID or a full numeric keypad matters more than visible key legends, Apple’s USB-C Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad is a credible alternative, but Apple’s cited specification does not advertise backlighting.
The right choice therefore depends on four priorities: reliable key illumination, Mac-specific legends, Touch ID, and whether you need a number pad. The comparison below separates documented features from assumptions so you can choose for your particular iMac.
Quick comparison
| Keyboard | Backlighting | Mac layout | Touch ID | Numeric keypad | Wireless and battery details | Compatibility documented by the manufacturer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Logitech MX Keys S for Mac | Adaptive proximity lighting; seven levels; brightness and duration adjustable in Logi Options+ | Dedicated Mac layout | No Touch ID listed | Not stated in the cited product material | Wireless; pairs with up to three Apple devices; battery behavior depends on backlight use | macOS 10.15 or later |
| Logitech MX Keys for Mac | Illuminated keys that adjust to changing light | Mac layout | No Touch ID listed | Not stated in the cited specification | Bluetooth Low Energy and Unifying receiver; up to 10 days with backlight or five months without, according to Logitech’s specification | macOS 10.15 or later |
| Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad (USB-C) | Backlighting is not stated in the cited Apple specification | Apple extended layout | Yes | Yes | Wireless rechargeable; Apple advertises about a month or more between charges | Mac models with Apple silicon; introduced in 2024 |
These are manufacturer specifications rather than independent typing tests. They establish layout, lighting, connectivity and compatibility claims, but they do not prove a particular key feel, typing speed or long-term reliability.

The MX Keys S for Mac is explicitly presented as an illuminated wireless keyboard with a Mac-specific layout. That combination addresses the two requirements most iMac buyers mean by “compatible with backlighting”: the legends and modifier keys should make sense on macOS, and the keys should remain readable in a dim room.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Lighting that reacts to your hands and room
Logitech says the keyboard uses an embedded ambient-light sensor. Its support documentation states: “Your keyboard has an embedded ambient light sensor that reads and adapts the level of backlighting accordingly.” The proximity behavior means the keys illuminate as your hands approach rather than running at full brightness continuously. Logitech documents seven backlight levels, so you can choose a lower setting for a dark room or a brighter setting when the legends need more emphasis.
In Logi Options+, Logitech provides controls for backlight brightness and the amount of time the lighting remains active. The app is useful when the automatic setting is close but not ideal—for example, if the lights turn off sooner than you prefer during pauses between sentences.
Important conditions that can look like a fault
Backlighting is conditional. Logitech says it cannot be turned on when the room is bright or when the keyboard battery is low. The ambient-light thresholds also differ by keyboard color:
- Dark keyboards: low light is below 100 lux, mid-level light is 100–200 lux, and backlighting turns off above 200 lux.
- Pale-gray keyboards: Logitech lists low light below 55 lux and backlight off above 55 lux.
Those thresholds explain why the same keyboard can appear brightly lit at night and unlit beside a sunny window. They also mean that pressing a brightness key will not force illumination when the sensor determines that the room is already bright or the battery is too low.
Mac layout and multi-device use
The “for Mac” version has dedicated Mac legends rather than asking you to remember Windows-oriented labels. Logitech also says the MX Keys S for Mac can pair with up to three Apple devices. That is useful if the same keyboard moves between an iMac, a MacBook and an iPad, although the exact switching procedure and device behavior should be confirmed in the current product documentation for your region.
What to check before buying for an iMac
Operating-system floor
Logitech documents macOS 10.15 or later for both the MX Keys S for Mac and the earlier MX Keys for Mac. Check your iMac’s installed version in Apple menu → About This Mac before ordering. “iMac compatible” is not a guarantee for every model ever sold: an older iMac may require an operating-system update, and compatibility can also depend on the keyboard’s current firmware and the connection method.
Whether you need Touch ID
A third-party keyboard cannot be assumed to provide the same fingerprint feature as Apple’s own keyboard. If you routinely unlock the Mac, approve passwords or authenticate purchases with a finger, decide whether Touch ID is worth giving up the lighting advantage. The MX Keys S documentation cited here does not list Touch ID.

Whether you need a number pad
Accountants, spreadsheet users and anyone entering long numeric sequences may prefer a full-size extended layout. The Apple Magic Keyboard model discussed below explicitly includes a numeric keypad. The cited MX Keys S material confirms a Mac layout but does not establish a numeric-keypad configuration, so verify the exact listing and dimensions before purchase.
Connection method and desk setup
Confirm whether your iMac will connect directly over Bluetooth or whether the listing includes a receiver. The earlier MX Keys for Mac specification explicitly lists Bluetooth Low Energy and a Unifying receiver; the cited MX Keys S material emphasizes wireless operation and multi-device pairing. A receiver can be useful when Bluetooth is congested, but it occupies a USB port and may require an adapter on a setup with limited ports. Wireless also means you should know where the charging cable can reach your desk.
How the three documented choices differ
Logitech MX Keys S for Mac
- Best for: iMac owners whose first requirement is visible, adaptive key illumination.
- Lighting: proximity activation, ambient adjustment and seven levels; duration and brightness can be customized in Logi Options+.
- Layout: dedicated Mac legends.
- Devices: up to three Apple devices according to Logitech’s product page.
- Compatibility: macOS 10.15 or later in Logitech support documentation.
- Caveats: lights switch off in bright conditions and when the battery is low; no Touch ID claim is documented.
Logitech MX Keys for Mac
The earlier MX Keys for Mac remains relevant if you find a correctly identified model at a suitable price. Logitech describes it as an illuminated wireless keyboard with backlit keys that adjust to changing light. Its technical specification lists Bluetooth Low Energy and a Unifying receiver, plus macOS 10.15 or later.
Logitech’s stated battery figures are up to 10 days with backlighting and up to five months without backlighting. These are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees; brightness, typing time, connection behavior and battery age affect actual runtime. Confirm that a listing is the Mac version rather than a similarly named keyboard before buying.
Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad (USB-C)
Apple’s 2024-introduced USB-C model is designed for Mac computers with Apple silicon. It combines Touch ID, a numeric keypad and wireless rechargeable operation, with Apple advertising about a month or more between charges. Those are compelling advantages for authentication and numeric work.
However, the cited Apple specification does not say that the keys are backlit. You should therefore treat this keyboard as a Touch ID and keypad alternative, not as a like-for-like illuminated-key replacement. If you work in a dark room, the absence of a documented lighting feature is a decisive difference.
Price, stock and listing checks
Prices and availability change, so use the model comparison rather than an old price as your buying rule. A product-page result captured on October 13, 2026 showed a $119.99 listing for the older MX Keys for Mac. That figure is a time-specific snapshot, not a guaranteed current price and not a quoted price for the MX Keys S for Mac. Check the retailer page at checkout, including shipping, tax, warranty and return terms.

Search results can mix the Mac and Windows versions, full-size and compact variants, and different keyboard colors. Before paying, verify that the title says MX Keys S for Mac or MX Keys for Mac, that the photographs show Command and Option legends, and that the regional arrangement matches your typing habits. If a listing claims a numeric keypad, compare its dimensions and photographs with the manufacturer’s specification rather than relying on a cropped image.

For Apple’s keyboard, check that the USB-C, Touch ID and numeric-keypad description is present and that your iMac uses Apple silicon. Apple’s cited specification targets Apple-silicon Macs, so an Intel iMac owner should confirm compatibility with the exact model and current macOS release before ordering.
Setup on a recent iMac
The labels vary slightly between macOS releases, but the normal Bluetooth setup is short:
- Charge the keyboard before pairing. A low battery can prevent the MX Keys S backlight from activating and can interrupt setup.
- Turn the keyboard on and place it near the iMac.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth. On older macOS versions, use Apple menu → System Preferences → Bluetooth.
- Wait for the keyboard name to appear, then select it and follow the on-screen pairing prompt. If macOS displays a sequence to type, enter that sequence on the physical keyboard and press Return.
- Open a text field and test the Command, Option, Control and Function keys. A Mac-specific model should present the expected Mac legends.
- Install Logi Options+ if you want to adjust the MX Keys S backlight brightness or duration. Keep the automatic sensor behavior in mind when testing: use a dimmer room, because bright ambient light can intentionally turn the backlight off.
If your iMac does not show the keyboard, switch Bluetooth off and on in System Settings, power-cycle the keyboard and remove an old entry before pairing again. Do not assume that a failed backlight means the keyboard is defective until you have checked room brightness and battery level.
Troubleshooting the backlight
The keys never light up
- Move away from direct sunlight or a brightly lit desk. The sensor may be above the documented threshold.
- Recharge the keyboard. Logitech specifically lists low battery as a condition in which backlighting cannot turn on.
- Approach the keys with your hands; the MX Keys S is designed to react to proximity rather than remain constantly illuminated.
- Use Logi Options+ to check the selected brightness and duration.
- Test in a genuinely dim room. A pale-gray keyboard can switch off above 55 lux, while Logitech lists a higher 200-lux off threshold for dark keyboards.
The lighting turns off while you are working
First distinguish normal timeout from a fault. The MX Keys S allows the duration to be customized in Logi Options+, so increase it if the lights disappear during pauses. If the room has become brighter or the battery has dropped, the sensor and battery protection can also disable the backlight. Recharge and retest in lower light before considering a return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe keyboard works but the legends feel wrong
Check the model name and regional layout on the box and listing. “For Mac” should be explicit. A keyboard intended for another layout may still type on an iMac but place symbols, Command/Option labels or punctuation differently from what you expect.
The keyboard pairs but disconnects
Keep the keyboard close to the iMac during the first pairing and remove duplicate entries for an older copy of the same model. Recharge before repeated tests. If you are using the MX Keys for Mac with its Unifying receiver, make sure the receiver is fully inserted and that any USB hub or adapter is functioning. Do not buy a receiver-only listing unless you have confirmed that it is compatible with your exact keyboard.

Choosing by use case
| Your priority | Most suitable documented choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Visible keys in a dim room | MX Keys S for Mac | It is explicitly illuminated, adapts to ambient light and provides seven levels. |
| Touch ID authentication | Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad | Touch ID is a documented feature; the Logitech models cited do not list it. |
| Frequent numeric entry | Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad | The extended layout and numeric keypad are specified by Apple. |
| One keyboard for several Apple devices | MX Keys S for Mac | Logitech says it can pair with up to three Apple devices. |
| Older macOS installation | Check first; Logitech documents 10.15 or later | Do not infer support for an older iMac without checking its operating system and the current product listing. |
| Lowest charging frequency | Compare the Apple model and MX Keys settings | Apple advertises about a month or more for its rechargeable keyboard; Logitech’s earlier model is rated up to five months only with backlight disabled. |
Battery expectations and lighting trade-offs
Backlighting consumes more power than using the keyboard with its lights disabled. The earlier MX Keys for Mac specification illustrates the trade-off with figures of up to 10 days with backlight and five months without backlight. Those numbers apply to that model’s manufacturer estimate and should not be transferred to the MX Keys S for Mac.
For the MX Keys S, the practical rule is simple: keep it charged if illumination is essential. The low-battery cutoff is intentional, so a keyboard can continue to type while refusing to light the keys. If you need maximum time between charges, use a lower brightness level or allow a shorter lighting duration in Logi Options+.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apple’s “about a month or more” claim for the USB-C Magic Keyboard is also an advertised estimate. It describes rechargeable wireless use, not a promise that every user will reach the same interval. Frequent authentication, long work sessions and battery age can change the actual schedule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “great typing experience” can and cannot be concluded here
The documented evidence supports a Mac-specific layout, readable legends and controllable illumination. It does not include an independent key-feel test, typing-speed benchmark, noise measurement or long-term reliability study. Those qualities depend on personal preference and workstation conditions, so a responsible buying decision should focus on the verified differences: lighting behavior, authentication, layout, connectivity, battery estimates and compatibility.
Before ordering, verify the exact model suffix, keyboard color and regional layout. Color matters because Logitech lists different ambient-light thresholds for dark and pale-gray versions. Also confirm that the listing describes the Mac model, not a similarly named Windows configuration.
Buyer checklist
Use this short checklist on the product page and after delivery:
- Confirm the name includes the Mac designation and compare the Command and Option legends in the photos.
- Check your iMac’s macOS version against Logitech’s 10.15-or-later requirement, or verify Apple-silicon support for Apple’s Touch ID model.
- Decide whether a numeric keypad is essential before choosing a compact or unspecified layout.
- Decide whether Touch ID authentication saves enough time to outweigh the lack of documented backlighting.
- Check whether your preferred color changes the ambient-light threshold you expect.
- Verify Bluetooth or receiver requirements, available USB ports and any adapter you may need.
- Read the current return policy because lighting behavior, layout and battery condition are difficult to judge from a static listing.
- After pairing, test every modifier key, the number row, brightness controls and backlight response in both a bright and dim room.
Bottom line for an iMac buyer
Choose the Logitech MX Keys S for Mac when illuminated keys and a Mac layout are non-negotiable. Its proximity lighting, ambient sensor, seven levels and Logi Options+ controls are the clearest documented match for the title’s requirement. Choose Apple’s Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad only when Touch ID or the number pad outweighs the need for documented backlighting. The earlier MX Keys for Mac is a reasonable illuminated alternative, provided you confirm the exact model and accept its published battery estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Logitech MX Keys S for Mac backlit?
Yes. Logitech describes it as an illuminated keyboard with proximity-activated backlighting, an ambient-light sensor and seven brightness levels. The lights can remain off in bright conditions or when the battery is low.
Can I force the MX Keys S backlight to stay on in a bright room?
Not according to Logitech’s support conditions. The sensor can disable illumination above the documented light threshold, and low battery also prevents the backlight from turning on. Logi Options+ lets you adjust brightness and duration when lighting is available.
Does Apple’s Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad have backlit keys?
Apple’s cited USB-C specification documents Touch ID, wireless rechargeable operation and a numeric keypad, but it does not state that the keys are backlit. Treat it as a Touch ID and full-size alternative rather than a confirmed illuminated keyboard.
Will these keyboards work with every iMac?
No universal guarantee is documented. Logitech lists macOS 10.15 or later for the MX Keys S for Mac and the earlier MX Keys for Mac. Apple’s cited Touch ID model is for Mac computers with Apple silicon. Check your iMac model, installed macOS and the current listing.
Does the MX Keys S for Mac include a number pad?
The cited Logitech material confirms a Mac layout but does not establish a numeric-keypad configuration. If you need a number pad, verify the exact product photos, dimensions and specification before ordering; Apple’s cited keyboard explicitly includes one.
How many devices can the MX Keys S for Mac pair with?
Logitech says it can pair with up to three Apple devices. Confirm the current regional documentation for switching behavior if you plan to use it with an iMac, MacBook and iPad.
How long does the older MX Keys for Mac battery last?
Logitech rates it for up to 10 days with backlighting and up to five months without backlighting. These are manufacturer estimates that vary with brightness, usage, connection behavior and battery age.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why are the keys not lighting even though the keyboard types normally?
Check room brightness, battery level, hand proximity, selected brightness and lighting duration. Logitech lists bright conditions and low battery as reasons the backlight cannot turn on, so typing can continue while illumination remains disabled.
What price should I expect?
Prices are volatile. A product-page result captured October 13, 2026 showed $119.99 for the older MX Keys for Mac, but that is not a current-price guarantee and does not establish the MX Keys S price. Check the live listing, shipping, tax, warranty and returns.
