For most WordPress sites, start with Optimize JavaScript code, Optimize CSS code and Optimize HTML code enabled. Leave HTML comments disabled. Keep force-JavaScript-in-head, inline-all-CSS and data-URL image generation disabled. Treat JavaScript/CSS aggregation as an experiment, not an automatic speed win, and pair Autoptimize with a separate full-page cache because Autoptimize does not cache complete pages.

The recommended Autoptimize baseline

Open WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Autoptimize. Use the following as a safe starting profile before testing more aggressive combinations.

Option Starting setting Why Risk or qualification
Optimize JavaScript code On Minifies JavaScript and is generally a low-risk optimization. Any script that depends on unusual loading order may need exclusion.
Aggregate JS files Test; otherwise off Combines files, potentially reducing requests on a small site. Can create compatibility problems and a larger generated cache.
Aggregate inline JS Off Prevents rapid cache growth and reduces the chance of breaking inline features. Some sites may benefit, but it must be verified page by page.
Force JavaScript in head Off Avoids making JavaScript load early as render-blocking content. Moving scripts earlier can make first rendering slower.
Add try-catch wrapping Off Keeps output unchanged unless a specific aggregation problem requires a diagnostic workaround. Use exclusion of the offending file before enabling a broad wrapper.
Optimize CSS code On Minifies CSS files with comparatively little downside. Check layout, responsive breakpoints and interactive states.
Aggregate CSS files Test; otherwise off Can reduce requests on a small, stable site. Large or frequently changing stylesheets can make the combined cache expensive.
Aggregate inline CSS Off initially Limits cache growth and keeps the first configuration conservative. Guides differ; the official plugin listing advises disabling inline aggregation if cache size becomes a problem.
Inline all CSS Off Keeps HTML smaller and allows CSS files to be cached separately. Inlining can make every HTML response much larger.
Inline and defer CSS Off initially Avoids changing the page’s CSS delivery strategy until you have tested the current release. Its behavior and controls can vary by release; verify on your own site.
Generate data URLs for images Off Prevents images from being embedded into CSS as data strings. Embedding images can increase stylesheet and HTML transfer size.
Optimize HTML code On Removes unnecessary HTML whitespace and other minifiable characters. Inspect forms, conditional markup and scripts that depend on exact text.
Keep HTML comments Off Removes comments that add bytes but do not affect the rendered page. Keep comments only when your team uses them for a production function.

This profile favors predictable behavior. It applies the three low-risk minification switches first, then adds complexity only when a measured test shows a benefit.

What Autoptimize changes—and what it does not

Autoptimize primarily transforms front-end assets. Depending on the options you enable, it minifies HTML, CSS and JavaScript, combines selected files, changes where scripts or styles are delivered, and can alter how images are represented inside CSS. These operations affect the files a browser downloads; they do not automatically make every server-side operation faster.

Autoptimize does not provide a complete page cache. A page-cache plugin or equivalent cache at the hosting or reverse-proxy layer is still required if you want stored HTML responses for anonymous visitors. One commonly recommended pairing is Autoptimize with WP Super Cache, but the important principle is the separation of jobs: use a page cache for generated pages and Autoptimize for asset optimization.

Because optimized assets are generated and cached separately, changing a setting without clearing old generated files can leave you testing a mixture of configurations. Clear Autoptimize’s cache after each meaningful change, then purge any page cache and CDN cache that may still contain the previous HTML or asset references.

JavaScript settings for speed without fragile pages

Optimize JavaScript code: on

Enable Optimize JavaScript code first. Minification removes characters such as unnecessary whitespace and comments while preserving executable logic. It usually offers a modest transfer-size improvement with less compatibility risk than combining files or changing execution order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After saving, test every JavaScript-driven area that matters to visitors: navigation menus, search, forms, sliders, shopping carts, consent dialogs, account screens, video players and analytics or advertising controls. A minified file can still expose an existing script error, so use the browser console as well as visual checks.

Aggregate JS files: a small-site, test-first option

Aggregation combines multiple external JavaScript files into fewer generated files. Fewer requests can help a small site when the original scripts are numerous and small, but HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 already allow browsers to request many files efficiently. Combining files can therefore add complexity without improving the user-visible result.

A guide cited in the available material uses roughly 10 KB of combined JavaScript/CSS, judged from a GTmetrix waterfall, as a heuristic for when aggregation may be worth trying. This is not an Autoptimize limit or a published performance standard. Treat it as a test threshold, not a rule: inspect the actual waterfall, connection protocol, cache state and device profile for your site.

Enable JS aggregation only after the minification-only profile works. Record a baseline, enable the option, clear all caches and run the same tests. Keep it only if the page remains functional and the measured result improves. If anything fails, turn aggregation off before changing unrelated settings.

Aggregate inline JS: keep it off initially

Inline scripts are embedded in the HTML rather than loaded as separate files. Aggregating them can cause the generated asset to grow rapidly as page-specific snippets are added. The official plugin listing and its FAQ recommend disabling inline JavaScript and/or inline CSS aggregation when cache size becomes unacceptable. A reader report also described a popup no longer appearing after inline JavaScript aggregation was enabled; that is a compatibility warning, not a universal result.

Leave this option off unless you have a specific reason to test it. If you do test it, use pages with different templates and logged-in states, because a configuration that works on the home page may fail on a form, checkout or account page.

Force JavaScript in the head: off

Forcing JavaScript into the document head makes scripts load earlier. That can turn them into render-blocking resources, delaying the browser’s first usable rendering while it downloads and processes code that may not be needed immediately.

Keep the option off. If one library fails when it is deferred or combined, exclude that specific file from optimization rather than moving every script into the head. Exclusion is more targeted and preserves the performance behavior of the rest of the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add try-catch wrapping: a troubleshooting switch, not a default

Try-catch wrapping can help diagnose or contain a problem introduced by aggregation, but it changes the generated JavaScript around a broad set of scripts. Leave it off in a normal configuration. When aggregation breaks a feature, first identify and exclude the offending file; use wrapping only when targeted exclusion does not resolve the problem and you understand the resulting behavior.

CSS settings that protect rendering and cache efficiency

Optimize CSS code: on

Enable Optimize CSS code to minify stylesheet files. This reduces transfer bytes while retaining separate CSS resources that browsers can cache. Test desktop and mobile layouts, font loading, focus indicators, hover states, sticky elements, modals and any CSS-generated content.

Aggregate CSS files: test instead of assuming

CSS aggregation has the same trade-off as JavaScript aggregation: fewer requests can be useful on a small site, while a large combined file can invalidate more cached content whenever one component changes. A theme, page builder and several plugins may also rely on ordering that is not obvious from the file list.

Start with aggregation disabled. If the GTmetrix waterfall shows many small stylesheet requests and the site is otherwise stable, test CSS aggregation by itself. Do not enable CSS and JavaScript aggregation simultaneously for the first experiment; isolating variables makes a failure easier to diagnose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aggregate inline CSS: safer default is off

Guidance on inline CSS aggregation is mixed. One setup guide enables it, while the official plugin listing warns that inline aggregation can make the cache grow and suggests turning it off when cache size becomes a problem. Use off as the initial setting. If you test it, watch the size and number of generated cache files over several page types and after content changes, not just immediately after activation.

Inline all CSS: leave it off

Inline all CSS places the stylesheet content inside each HTML document. That can remove a separate CSS request, but it increases every HTML response and prevents the browser from reusing a cached stylesheet across pages. For a multi-page site, the repeated bytes generally make this a poor default. Keep it disabled unless a narrowly measured, single-page use case justifies the trade-off.

Inline and defer CSS: do not enable blindly

This option changes CSS delivery so styles can be deferred after an initial inline portion. It is tempting to treat it as automatic critical-CSS generation, but the current behavior and controls were not established for every release. Leave it off in the baseline profile, then consult the option’s current help text and test for flashes of unstyled content, layout shifts, print styles and no-JavaScript behavior before considering it.

Generate data URLs for images: off

Data URLs encode image bytes inside CSS. Although that can remove an image request, it also enlarges the stylesheet and prevents independent image caching. Keep Generate data URLs for images disabled unless a measured case with very small, repeatedly used images demonstrates a net benefit.

HTML settings: simple, low-risk byte reduction

Optimize HTML code: on

Enable Optimize HTML code to remove minifiable characters from the document. Compare the resulting source with the original when a template contains conditional comments, whitespace-sensitive elements or inline code that is assembled as text.

Keep HTML comments: off

Disable Keep HTML comments for normal production pages. Comments consume response bytes without changing the rendered result. If a particular comment is required by a third-party integration or deployment process, preserve that integration deliberately rather than enabling every comment site-wide.

Why aggregation should be tested separately

Aggregation is not the same as minification. Minification changes the contents of a file; aggregation changes file boundaries, ordering and cache invalidation behavior. Those boundaries can matter to scripts that expect another library to be available first, styles that depend on cascade order, or plugins that insert inline code beside a particular asset.

Aggregation also changes the cache’s shape. A small edit to one source file may force a large combined asset to be regenerated. Inline aggregation can cause variation by page template or plugin output, multiplying generated files. That is why the conservative profile keeps both inline aggregation options off and enables external aggregation only after a baseline comparison.

A step-by-step setup and testing workflow

  1. Back up and establish a rollback. Record the current Autoptimize settings and make sure you can disable the plugin from the WordPress Plugins screen if the front end becomes unusable.
  2. Check your existing optimization stack. Identify any host cache, CDN cache, page-cache plugin, theme optimization, script loader or separate CSS/JavaScript minifier. Two systems performing the same transformation can create confusing output and duplicate caching.
  3. Capture a baseline. Run the same URL through GTmetrix or PageSpeed Insights at least once before changing settings. Note mobile and desktop results, the waterfall, largest contentful paint, layout shift, total blocking time or interaction-to-next-paint where shown, request count, transferred bytes and visible errors. These tools are measurement aids, not guarantees of a real-user result.
  4. Enable only the three code-optimization switches. Turn on Optimize JavaScript code, Optimize CSS code and Optimize HTML code. Leave HTML comments off and every aggregation, force-head, inline-all-CSS and data-URL option off.
  5. Save and purge. Save the Autoptimize settings, clear its generated cache, purge the page cache and CDN cache, then load the site in a private browser window. Confirm that new optimized asset URLs are being served.
  6. Test real behavior. Submit forms, open menus and popups, switch responsive breakpoints, log in and out if applicable, add or remove cart items, and test pages with different templates. Also inspect the browser console and network panel for 404 responses or JavaScript exceptions.
  7. Retest the same way. Repeat the same GTmetrix or PageSpeed Insights run with the same URL, device setting and cache state. Keep a simple before-and-after record instead of relying on a single score.
  8. Experiment with one aggregation setting. If the baseline is stable and the waterfall suggests a possible benefit, enable either JS or CSS file aggregation—not both—then purge and repeat the checks.
  9. Keep or revert based on evidence. Retain the option only when the page remains correct and the improvement is repeatable. Revert the last change when a feature breaks; aggregation settings are the first suspects.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely setting to undo first Recovery
A popup, menu or modal no longer opens Aggregate inline JS or JS file aggregation Disable the last aggregation change, clear every cache and retest. If the problem disappears, exclude the responsible script instead of disabling all optimization.
JavaScript errors appear after combining files Aggregate JS files Revert aggregation, identify the failing library in the console, then add that file to Autoptimize’s JavaScript exclusion field if you need to keep other files combined.
The page is visibly unstyled or styles arrive late Inline and defer CSS, CSS aggregation or inline CSS changes Restore the previous CSS delivery setting, purge generated files and inspect the network panel for missing or delayed stylesheets.
HTML responses or generated cache grow rapidly Aggregate inline CSS or Aggregate inline JS Disable inline aggregation. The official plugin FAQ specifically recommends this approach when cache size becomes unacceptable.
Scripts block first rendering Force JavaScript in head Turn it off. Exclude only the script that genuinely requires an earlier position.
Images or stylesheets become unexpectedly large Generate data URLs for images or Inline all CSS Disable the option and clear Autoptimize’s generated files so new external resources can be cached normally.
Changes appear not to take effect Stale cache at one of several layers Clear Autoptimize, page-cache, CDN and browser caches in that order, then verify the HTML references the new asset URLs.

If Autoptimize conflicts with another plugin because it initializes too late or too early, its FAQ documents the AUTOPTIMIZE_INIT_EARLIER constant in wp-config.php as a way to change initialization order. Use that only when you have identified an initialization-order conflict and can test the configuration safely; it is not a general speed setting.

Choosing settings by site size and complexity

Small brochure or portfolio site

Start with all three minification options on, comments off and aggregation off. If the waterfall shows many small files and the site uses a simple theme with few plugins, test external JS and CSS aggregation one at a time. A small site may gain from fewer requests, but only a repeatable measurement justifies the added maintenance.

Content-heavy site with many templates

Prefer minification without aggregation. Multiple templates, widgets and embeds create more opportunities for inline code and ordering dependencies. Keep inline aggregation off and monitor generated cache size after publishing new posts or changing widgets.

Commerce, membership or form-heavy site

Use the conservative profile and test logged-in and logged-out states separately. Checkout, account, payment, validation and popup scripts are more sensitive to execution order. Do not judge success from a cacheable home page alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Site already using a page cache and CDN

Autoptimize can complement those systems, but every layer must be purged when an optimized asset changes. Confirm that the page cache stores the HTML that references the current Autoptimize files and that the CDN is not serving an older asset indefinitely.

How to interpret speed-test results

A higher laboratory score is useful only when the page still works and the result repeats. Run tests after caches are warm and again after a cold purge when you need to understand first-visit behavior. Compare the waterfall for transferred bytes, request timing and render-blocking resources rather than chasing one score.

Autoptimize’s setting changes can affect different page types unequally. Test at least the home page, a representative content page, a page with a form or interactive component, and any transaction or account flow. Check both mobile and desktop because a change that saves a request may be less important than the CPU cost of parsing a larger combined file on a phone.

Limits of what these settings can prove

There is no published, general percentage speed gain that can be promised for Autoptimize. Results depend on the theme, plugins, hosting, protocol, cache state, visitor device and the assets actually loaded on each page. The roughly 10 KB aggregation figure is a guide heuristic, not a standard and not a guarantee of improvement.

These settings also do not establish that Autoptimize generates critical CSS. Do not describe the plugin as automatically producing a complete critical-CSS solution unless the documentation for the exact release and configuration says so. Likewise, verify the behavior of inline-and-defer CSS in your installed release before relying on it for a production rendering strategy.

A practical final configuration

For a dependable first deployment, enable JavaScript, CSS and HTML optimization; disable HTML comments; keep inline aggregation, force-JavaScript-in-head, inline-all-CSS, data-URL image generation and inline-and-defer CSS off; and leave external JS/CSS aggregation off until a controlled test shows a repeatable benefit. Add a separate full-page cache, purge every cache after changes, and validate the site’s real interactions—not just its score—before keeping an advanced option.
