There is no single best simulator for every autonomous-driving safety program. Choose CARLA for an open, programmable research foundation; NVIDIA DRIVE simulation and AlpaSim for physically accurate sensors, reconstructed scenes and very large reactive campaigns; BeamNG.tech when vehicle dynamics, automated testing, HIL or DIL are central; and add Applied Intuition’s Validation Toolset and Cloud Engine when coverage analytics, continuous integration and safety-requirements traceability matter most. None of these platforms, by itself, replaces track testing, supervised road testing or the safety evidence required by applicable standards and regulators.
What an autonomous-driving safety simulator must prove
A simulator is useful for safety testing only when it can produce repeatable situations, expose the right signals to the vehicle stack and record evidence that engineers can analyze. The important question is not whether a platform has attractive graphics. It is whether it lets you test the behavior of the complete system under controlled conditions and connect each result to a safety argument.
Sensor and vehicle-physics fidelity
Camera, lidar, radar, ultrasonic, inertial and positioning models determine whether perception and localization receive realistic inputs. Vehicle dynamics determine whether a controller can actually follow a planned path, brake, accelerate or recover from a disturbance. A visually convincing scene with weak sensor or tire-response models can produce misleading confidence, so sensor-model validity and sim-to-real correlation must be measured against recorded or track data.

Control over actors and rare events
Safety programs need more than normal traffic. They must vary pedestrians, cyclists, animals, emergency vehicles, road users that violate expectations, weather, lighting, road layout and occlusion. The simulator should let you seed those conditions, replay them exactly and change one factor at a time.

Reactive closed-loop behavior
In an open-loop replay, other actors follow a prerecorded script even when the autonomous vehicle behaves differently. Closed-loop simulation lets the ego vehicle’s decisions change the future scene. That matters for cut-ins, yielding, unprotected turns, emergency responses and any event where a safe outcome depends on how another agent reacts.
Scale, integration and evidence
Large campaigns require distributed or cloud execution, deterministic logging, scenario versioning and automated pass/fail analysis. Teams also need interfaces to the real autonomy stack, standards such as ASAM OpenDRIVE and OpenSCENARIO, hardware- or driver-in-the-loop options, and a way to trace a failed test back to a safety requirement.

CARLA: the strongest open-source starting point
CARLA is an open-source autonomous-driving simulator built on Unreal Engine. Its Python and C++ APIs expose vehicles, pedestrians, traffic, weather, sensors and other actors, allowing a research team to generate and replay controlled situations rather than depending on a fixed collection of demonstrations. CARLA uses ASAM OpenDRIVE for road descriptions and includes Scenario Runner for repeatable scenario execution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why research teams choose it
- Programmability: You can create traffic situations, place actors, vary weather and sensor settings, and connect the simulator to your own planning or control code.
- Open-stack integration: CARLA’s services documentation describes APIs connecting it with SUMO, Autoware and PTV-Vissim, which is useful when the test stack already uses those tools.
- Map and scenario control: Procedural map generation from XODR and user-defined situations support systematic variation instead of ad-hoc manual testing.
- Reproducibility: Fixed routes, seeds, actor parameters and weather settings can be stored and replayed when investigating a regression.
A practical CARLA test workflow
- Define the safety question. Write the requirement in observable terms, such as maintaining a minimum stopping margin for a pedestrian crossing from behind an occluder, rather than starting with a visual scene.
- Describe the road. Import or generate an ASAM OpenDRIVE map, then check lanes, junction priorities, speed limits, elevation and reference coordinates against the intended environment.
- Configure the ego vehicle and sensors. Set camera placement and timing, lidar or radar parameters, inertial data and vehicle-control interfaces to match the stack being tested.
- Create the traffic situation. Use Scenario Runner or the API to place vehicles, pedestrians and other actors, then specify weather, lighting, occlusion and trigger conditions.
- Connect the autonomy stack. Run the planner, controller and perception components through the same message and timing interfaces used by the target system. Record sensor inputs, decisions, actuator commands and collisions or violations.
- Parameterize and sweep. Vary speed, distance, reaction timing, road friction, visibility and actor behavior. Keep each variation identifiable so a failure can be reproduced.
- Compare with physical evidence. Calibrate the most safety-critical models against recorded drives or track runs before treating a pass rate as evidence about the road vehicle.
CARLA is a test environment, not a regulator-approved substitute for physical validation. Its flexibility is an advantage for research, but it also puts responsibility for model calibration, scenario quality, time synchronization and infrastructure maintenance on the user.

NVIDIA DRIVE simulation and AlpaSim: high-fidelity, reactive scale
NVIDIA’s safety documentation argues that physical testing cannot controllably and exhaustively cover dangerous or rare situations. Its DRIVE simulation material describes physically accurate sensor simulation across emergency vehicles, pedestrians, animals, weather, road conditions and lighting. NVIDIA’s AlpaSim documentation describes an open simulation framework that combines Omniverse NuRec reconstructed scenes with synthetic scenes, configurable traffic and policy models, and scalable closed-loop testing.
What distinguishes this option
- Reconstructed and synthetic environments: Teams can work from captured environments while also generating conditions that are difficult or unsafe to collect on public roads.
- Reactive agents: Agent decisions can change future scene states. That is more representative of a negotiation at a merge or a pedestrian reacting to the ego vehicle than a fixed video replay.
- Sensor emphasis: The stated focus on physically accurate sensors is relevant when perception performance, adverse weather and lighting are primary risks.
- Large campaigns: NVIDIA product pages use qualitative language about “millions of virtual scenarios” and “millions of virtual miles.” Those phrases describe the intended scale, not an independently audited comparative benchmark.
Questions an enterprise buyer should settle
Ask how sensor models were validated for the exact camera, lidar, radar and compute configuration you use. Establish what coverage metric is available: unique scenario parameters, operational-design-domain combinations, requirement coverage or another measure. Estimate storage, GPU capacity, orchestration and result-review costs for a campaign, and determine how reconstructed-scene assets are licensed and versioned. Finally, test timing and interface compatibility with the production perception, planning and control stack before committing to a broad migration.
BeamNG.tech: dynamics, automated tests and HIL/DIL
BeamNG.tech documentation describes BeamNGpy, automated generation and execution of test scenarios, vehicle control, training-data workflows and validation/verification support. The platform is aimed at ADAS, autonomous-driving and vehicle-dynamics applications, with traffic simulation in environments including cities, deserts and racetracks. Its HIL and DIL documentation covers hardware components and human drivers in the loop.

If the safety question depends on tire forces, suspension movement, braking response, rollover risk, a difficult maneuver or controller interaction with real hardware, vehicle dynamics can matter more than photorealistic scenery. BeamNG.tech is a candidate for testing those behaviors while automating the scenario setup and result collection.

How to use it in a dynamics-centered program
- Specify the physical behavior under test. Define the maneuver, road surface, target speed, steering or brake input and acceptable response before building the scene.
- Select the vehicle and environment model. Verify mass, center of gravity, tire, powertrain, brake and steering parameters against the test vehicle or the intended abstraction.
- Automate scenario generation with BeamNGpy. Generate parameter sets for speed, curvature, friction, traffic and disturbances so every run has a machine-readable configuration.
- Choose the loop type. Use software-in-the-loop for rapid iteration, then introduce the target controller, electronic control unit or human driver through DIL or HIL where timing and physical interfaces are safety-relevant.
- Log both vehicle response and autonomy decisions. Capture positions, velocities, accelerations, wheel behavior, control commands, sensor data and the pass/fail rule in one synchronized record.
- Correlate with physical tests. Compare braking distance, path tracking, yaw response and other critical measures with instrumented track data before relying on simulation-only thresholds.
Confirm the sensor model, map library, real-time behavior and licensing for your required test volume. The existence of HIL or DIL interfaces does not automatically establish that a particular hardware setup, sensor suite or controller has been validated.
Applied Intuition tooling around CARLA
Applied Intuition’s Validation Toolset and Cloud Engine are workflow layers for running and analyzing simulator tests. In a February 8, 2022 technical article, the company described running CARLA scenarios at scale, analyzing coverage and performance, and tracing results back to safety requirements in a unified workflow. The same article described editing and managing OpenSCENARIO 1.1 and 2.0 content.
What this layer adds
- Continuous integration: Scenario suites can be run when perception, planning or control code changes, making regressions visible before a vehicle test.
- Coverage analysis: Results can be grouped by scenario dimensions and requirements rather than judged only by the total number of runs.
- Traceability: A failed or passed run can be associated with the requirement it was intended to exercise, supporting review of a safety case.
- Standards management: OpenSCENARIO editing and management can help teams exchange scenarios, subject to the versions and features supported by the current product.
This tooling does not remove the need to choose and validate a simulator. Verify current product names, supported versions, integrations with your CI system, deployment architecture and pricing before designing a production workflow around the 2022 description.
Which platform should you choose?
Choose CARLA when openness and experimentation lead
CARLA is the practical first choice when your team needs source access, custom APIs, ROS or Autoware integration, controllable sensors and weather, or reproducible academic and engineering experiments. Budget time for calibration, infrastructure and scenario maintenance.

Choose NVIDIA DRIVE simulation or AlpaSim when sensor realism and scale lead
Select NVIDIA’s offering when reconstructed environments, physically accurate sensor workflows, reactive agents and very large scenario campaigns are central. Treat “millions” as a stated scale capability, not proof that your specific safety requirements are covered.
Choose BeamNG.tech when dynamics or hardware loops lead
BeamNG.tech fits programs where vehicle response, automated test control, HIL, DIL or human-driver interaction are first-order concerns. It is especially relevant for controller and vehicle-behavior validation, provided the chosen models correlate with physical measurements.
Add a validation workflow layer when evidence management leads
Use tooling such as Applied Intuition’s Validation Toolset and Cloud Engine when the difficult part is organizing scenarios, running them in CI, measuring coverage and maintaining links to requirements. It complements rather than universally replaces a simulator.
How to test rare edge cases before road testing
- Define the operational design domain. Record road types, speeds, weather, lighting, traffic participants, geographic limits and fallback expectations. An edge case is meaningful only relative to the conditions in which the vehicle is intended to operate.
- Turn hazards into parameterized scenarios. Represent an occluded pedestrian, emergency vehicle approach, animal crossing, sudden cut-in or low-visibility event with measurable variables such as actor speed, time gap, lane position, visibility and friction.
- Use falsification-oriented variation. Search the combinations most likely to violate a safety requirement instead of sampling only typical traffic. Keep the random seed, software version, map version and asset versions with every result.
- Run closed loop. Let the ego vehicle’s actions influence other agents and future states. Otherwise, a successful replay may say little about behavior under a different braking or steering decision.
- Define pass/fail before execution. Examples include collision avoidance, minimum time-to-collision, maximum lateral error, lawful stopping position, controllability after a fault and successful transition to a minimal-risk condition.
- Analyze coverage and clusters of failures. Group runs by requirements and scenario dimensions, then investigate whether many failures share a perception, planning, timing, map or vehicle-dynamics cause.
- Reproduce in a higher-fidelity environment. Move critical cases from a fast exploratory simulator to a sensor- or dynamics-focused setup, then to an instrumented track where practical.
- Use public-road testing only with controls. Apply safety-driver procedures, route restrictions, monitoring, abort criteria and incident logging appropriate to the vehicle and jurisdiction.
HIL, DIL and closed-loop integration checklist
- Timing: Confirm simulator step size, sensor latency, controller deadlines and clock synchronization.
- Interfaces: Match the message formats, coordinate frames, timestamps and actuator limits used by the real stack.
- Fault injection: Decide whether the setup can model dropped sensors, delayed messages, degraded localization, compute overloads and actuator faults relevant to the requirement.
- Determinism: Record seeds and software versions, and determine whether a failed run can be replayed bit-for-bit or only statistically.
- Real hardware: For HIL, verify electrical, network and real-time constraints; for DIL, verify the driver or human-in-the-loop protocol and safety interlocks.
- Evidence: Preserve raw sensor streams, world state, autonomy outputs, vehicle response, scenario configuration and requirement identifier together.
What simulation cannot establish by itself
Simulation can reveal software defects, expose unsafe interactions and expand testing into rare conditions, but every result depends on the models and assumptions behind it. A simulator may omit sensor artifacts, unusual road materials, construction changes, communication failures, vehicle wear or human behavior seen in the real world. Even a physically accurate model is accurate only within the conditions for which it was validated.

Combine simulation with track testing, supervised on-road validation, operational-design-domain analysis, safety-driver procedures and the applicable ISO 26262, SOTIF and regional regulatory evidence. Vendor documentation describes capabilities; it does not independently certify that any platform alone proves an autonomous system safe.
Cost, licensing and deployment questions
The available platform descriptions do not establish comparable prices. Treat cost as a program-specific calculation rather than assuming that open-source software is free to operate or that an enterprise platform’s stated scale includes all required compute, storage, scene assets and support.
- Ask whether commercial use, redistribution, cloud execution and CI workers require separate licenses.
- Estimate GPU, CPU, storage and network costs for both interactive development and unattended campaigns.
- Include engineering time for model calibration, map conversion, scenario authoring, orchestration and result triage.
- Check retention and export policies for recorded sensor data and reconstructed scenes.
- Confirm support for the simulator version, autonomy middleware, OpenDRIVE or OpenSCENARIO features and hardware interfaces you actually use.
A defensible selection decision
Start with the safety requirements and the evidence you must produce, then score each candidate on sensor fidelity, vehicle dynamics, actor control, reactive behavior, execution scale, HIL/DIL support, standards compatibility and traceability. A mixed toolchain is often more defensible than forcing one platform to perform every role: CARLA can provide open scenario experimentation, a high-fidelity or dynamics-focused platform can deepen critical-case validation, and a workflow layer can manage CI, coverage and requirements evidence. The final safety claim should rest on correlated simulation, track and road evidence—not on a simulator’s feature list.
