Start with Apple TV 4K set to Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Format → Auto. Apple TV then selects the highest-quality format that both your connected equipment and the available F1 stream support. Use Stereo only with a two-channel system, and choose Dolby Digital 5.1 as a compatibility fallback when your equipment cannot use Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM. If Atmos is available, enable it, but remember that an Atmos-capable connection does not prove that every F1 event stream contains Atmos.
For event-specific controls, open the playback controls in the Apple TV app and select Audio Options. That menu handles commentary language and Reduce Loud Sounds; it is separate from the Apple TV system output-format setting.
Recommended Apple TV audio settings at a glance
The right setting depends on four things: your speakers, the format carried by the particular F1 event, the HDMI route between your devices, and whether you want full dynamic range or a more even volume. Use this table as the starting decision.
| Apple TV setting | Use it when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | You have a modern television, soundbar, AV receiver, or home-theater system | Apple TV selects the highest-quality format supported by both the connected equipment and the content. |
| Stereo | Your system has only left and right speakers or a stereo amplifier | Outputs two-channel audio for equipment that does not decode multichannel formats. |
| Dolby Digital 5.1 | Your equipment lacks Dolby Atmos and multichannel PCM support but can decode Dolby Digital | Forces a Dolby Digital 5.1 output as a compatibility option. |
| Dolby Atmos | The option appears and your soundbar or receiver supports Atmos over the connected HDMI path | Allows Atmos output when the program and the equipment path support it. |
Apple describes Auto as the sensible default because it considers both the hardware and the content. Selecting a format manually cannot create surround or Atmos information that is absent from the F1 stream.

Set Apple TV 4K to Auto first
- On the Apple TV home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Video and Audio.
- Open Audio Format.
- Select Auto.
With Auto enabled, Apple TV 4K negotiates an output that the connected television, soundbar, receiver, and the program can handle. This avoids forcing a format that a particular device cannot decode or pass through.
When Stereo is the correct choice
Select Stereo when the Apple TV feeds a two-channel television, powered speakers, or stereo amplifier. A stereo system cannot reproduce a discrete center, surround, or height channel, so choosing a multichannel format adds no useful speaker information and may create compatibility problems.
When Dolby Digital 5.1 is a fallback
Apple identifies Dolby Digital 5.1 for equipment that does not support Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM. It is a practical fallback for an older surround receiver or soundbar that accepts Dolby Digital but does not support newer formats. Do not choose it merely because “5.1” sounds better on paper; if your equipment supports multichannel PCM or Atmos, Auto is normally the more flexible setting.

When to enable Dolby Atmos
Turn on Dolby Atmos when the option is present under Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Format and your soundbar or AV receiver supports it. The option may be absent when Apple TV cannot identify an Atmos-capable device through the current connection. In that situation, changing to Dolby Digital 5.1 before checking the wiring can hide the real problem.
How F1 audio formats actually work
Apple’s 2026 US launch announcement describes every Grand Prix as having 5.1 surround sound. Dolby separately announced an Atmos debut for Formula 1 on Apple TV. These are service-level announcements, not a guarantee that every viewer receives Atmos for every event. The event, region, Apple TV model, app version, HDMI topology, and connected audio equipment all affect the signal that reaches your speakers.

5.1 does not mean every device will output five channels
A 5.1-capable F1 stream can still play in stereo if Apple TV is connected to stereo equipment or if the system is configured for Stereo. Apple’s Dolby Digital 5.1 menu item is an output-format choice; it is not a measurement of the audio mix in every event or a promise that all broadcasts use the same format.
Atmos support is conditional
Atmos appears only when the content and the complete playback chain support it. An Atmos-capable receiver display is not proof that the specific F1 stream contains Atmos. Apple notes that Continuous Audio can maintain a Dolby MAT connection while the original program audio continues in its own format. Your receiver may therefore show an Atmos-related signal even when the source is stereo or another multichannel mix.

Apple’s setup guidance recommends connecting Apple TV directly to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, then connecting that device’s HDMI output to the television. This arrangement is important when the television does not pass Dolby Atmos through to an external audio device.
Recommended direct-to-audio wiring
- Connect the Apple TV 4K HDMI output to an HDMI input on the Atmos-capable soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output to the television’s HDMI input.
- Turn on the television and audio device, then return to
Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Formaton Apple TV. - Check whether the Dolby Atmos option now appears.
This route gives the audio device first access to the Apple TV signal. It is especially useful with televisions that accept Atmos from built-in apps but do not reliably pass Atmos from an HDMI source.
What ARC means for Apple TV Atmos
Apple’s setup article states that Apple TV 4K uses a high-bandwidth form of Atmos that does not work over ARC connections. If your television and receiver are linked only through ARC, the Atmos option may not appear or the expected signal may not arrive. A direct Apple TV-to-audio-device connection is the safer arrangement when the equipment supports it.

Account for video-format limitations
Some soundbars and receivers support Atmos audio but do not pass every video format, such as HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Connecting Apple TV directly to the audio device may therefore require a choice: preserve a particular video format through the television, or route audio first through hardware that can decode Atmos. Check the published capabilities of each device and use the HDMI arrangement that supports the formats you actually watch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Change commentary language and loudness during an F1 event
System output settings and event playback controls are different menus. To change the F1 broadcast language or reduce sudden volume changes, make the change while the event is playing.
- Start the F1 event in the Apple TV app.
- Bring up the playback controls.
- Select Audio Options.
- Choose an available Audio Track for another commentary language.
- Enable Reduce Loud Sounds if you want a narrower loud-to-quiet range.
What Reduce Loud Sounds changes
Reduce Loud Sounds lowers the overall level by reducing dynamic range. It can make team-radio peaks, engine noise, and other sudden effects less disruptive when you are watching late at night or using television speakers. It does not change Apple TV’s selected output format and does not turn stereo into surround sound.
Language availability
The Audio Track list appears only when alternate tracks are provided for that event and region. If a language is missing, there may be no additional track for that broadcast rather than a fault with your Apple TV. Apple’s F1 support guidance says access and features vary by region and device; the cited subscription description is US-only. Check the Apple TV app in your country for the current event, language, and subscription availability.
Why Dolby Atmos is missing on Apple TV
When Atmos is not listed under Audio Format, check compatibility and signal routing before forcing Dolby Digital 5.1.

1. The HDMI path does not pass Atmos
A television may not pass Atmos from an external Apple TV to a soundbar or receiver. Rewire Apple TV directly to the compatible audio device, then run HDMI from that device to the TV. If the soundbar or receiver has no suitable HDMI input or output, its supported connection method may limit the available formats.
2. ARC is being used for a high-bandwidth Atmos signal
Apple says the high-bandwidth Atmos form used by Apple TV 4K does not work over ARC. Use the direct-to-audio-device arrangement when possible, or consult the equipment documentation for a supported eARC or alternative topology. Do not assume that a television’s ability to play Atmos from its own apps means it can forward the same signal from Apple TV.
3. One component cannot handle the selected video format
An audio device may decode Atmos while failing to pass HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Try a connection arrangement that preserves the video features you value while keeping the audio device in the signal path where it can decode the available format.
4. The content is not carrying Atmos
Dolby’s F1 announcement establishes Atmos availability for Formula 1 on Apple TV, but it does not guarantee Atmos for every event, region, or device. If the option appears and the wiring is correct, the particular stream may still use stereo or 5.1. Apple’s Continuous Audio behavior can also make a receiver’s format display look more advanced than the original program mix.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Restore the baseline: set
Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Formatto Auto. - Inspect the hardware chain: identify whether Apple TV connects first to the TV, soundbar, or receiver, and confirm that each HDMI port supports the formats you want.
- Use direct audio routing for Atmos: connect Apple TV to the compatible soundbar or receiver when the TV does not pass Atmos.
- Check the menu: return to Audio Format and confirm whether Dolby Atmos is listed. If it is not, investigate device capability and HDMI topology before selecting Dolby Digital 5.1.
- Check the event menu: while F1 is playing, open Audio Options to choose the available language or Reduce Loud Sounds.
- Interpret the receiver display carefully: a Dolby MAT or Atmos-related indicator may reflect the connection maintained by Continuous Audio, not the native mix of the F1 program.
Choose settings for common home setups
Television speakers only
Leave Audio Format on Auto. If the television is strictly stereo and Auto behaves incorrectly, Stereo is the appropriate explicit choice. Use Reduce Loud Sounds in the event’s Audio Options when engine noise or sudden broadcast peaks are uncomfortable.
Stereo amplifier or powered stereo speakers
Select Stereo or leave Auto if the system correctly identifies itself as two-channel. There is no benefit in forcing Dolby Digital 5.1 on equipment that cannot decode or reproduce surround channels.
Older surround soundbar or receiver
Try Auto first. If the device cannot use Atmos or multichannel PCM but accepts Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital 5.1 is the documented fallback. Confirm that the receiver reports a stable signal during the F1 event.
Atmos soundbar
Use Auto and make sure Dolby Atmos appears as an available option. For the most reliable Atmos handshake, connect Apple TV directly to the soundbar and the soundbar to the TV, particularly when the TV’s ARC path does not pass the high-bandwidth Atmos signal.
AV receiver with several sources
Connect Apple TV to an HDMI input on the receiver, then connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV. Check the receiver’s video pass-through limits: Atmos support does not automatically mean HDR10 or Dolby Vision pass-through. Auto remains the best starting output because it adapts to the receiver and the F1 content.
What “best” means for F1 viewing
There is no single subjective mix that is best for every room. For a surround or Atmos theater, preserving the stream’s available channels and full dynamic range may give the most immersive result. For a late-night viewer using a television or compact soundbar, Reduce Loud Sounds may be more useful than maximum dynamics. For multilingual households, the preferred Audio Track can matter more than the output format.
Quick Recap
Use this order of priorities:
- Compatibility first: choose Auto and a supported HDMI route.
- Channel capability second: use Stereo for stereo equipment, and Dolby Digital 5.1 only as the documented fallback for compatible older surround hardware.
- Content verification third: do not infer the event’s native mix solely from the receiver’s front-panel label.
- Listening comfort fourth: use Reduce Loud Sounds when the full dynamic range is impractical.
- Language preference fifth: choose an alternate commentary track when the event supplies one.
Key limitations to keep in mind
- Apple’s 5.1 statement applies to the US F1 launch announcement and does not establish identical availability in every country.
- F1 access, languages, and features vary by region, device, and event.
- Atmos support announced for Formula 1 does not guarantee Atmos on every stream or HDMI setup.
- An Atmos-capable receiver can display a Dolby MAT or Atmos-related signal while the original content remains stereo or another multichannel format.
- A more expensive HDMI cable does not improve audio by itself; the cable’s role is to provide a supported connection between compatible devices.
