For most communities, the best choice depends on the job rather than a single “best” plugin. Assetto Servers’ Plugin Manager is the fastest route to managed timing, drift leaderboards, moderation, Discord auditing, live weather, and race challenges. AssettoServer is the stronger self-hosted foundation when you need Steam authentication, AI traffic, dynamic weather, and an experimental plugin interface. Assetto Server Manager is the most flexible choice for operators who already use it and want executable plugins or Lua automation.
This guide compares those routes by capability, installation model, client requirements, extensibility, and maintenance so you can choose a plugin stack without breaking joins or race sessions.

What an Assetto Corsa server plugin actually does
A server plugin runs alongside the dedicated server and reacts to events such as player connections, session changes, lap results, chat messages, and race completion. Depending on the implementation, it can record timing, calculate drift scores, enforce moderation rules, send audit events to Discord, alter weather, or automate league procedures.

Two details are easy to miss:
- Installation model matters as much as features. A managed package may be enabled from a web panel, while a self-hosted plugin can require file deployment, configuration edits, and manual updates.
- Client compatibility can gate server features. Steam authentication and dynamic weather rely on Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) and Content Manager versions that players must have installed. A server-side feature cannot compensate for an outdated client.
Evaluate every plugin against five questions: what event it handles, where its files and settings live, which clients must match, how it is updated, and what happens when it fails during a live session.
Assetto Servers Plugin Manager: the convenience-first option
The Assetto Servers guide updated August 18, 2026 says its Plugin Manager displays “both first-party managed packages and plugins included with AssettoServer.” That makes it the most accessible route for communities that do not want to copy plugin files or maintain several configuration files by hand.

The manager’s list combines first-party managed packages with plugins that are included with AssettoServer. Treat the list as the available catalog for your account and server rather than assuming every package has identical update or support behavior.
Managed installation requirements
Managed installation requires an activated Discord Bot Plan. The documentation does not state a universal price for that plan, so confirm the current account requirements before committing a production server to the workflow.
- Open the server’s Plugin Manager in the ServerHub panel.
- Review the package list and select the capability you need, such as Leaderboard Timing or Live Weather.
- Confirm that the Discord Bot Plan is active when the package uses managed Discord integration.
- Apply the package and its configuration from the panel.
- Allow the panel to restart the running server when plugin files or configuration change.
- After the restart, join as a test player and verify the expected result: a recorded lap, a drift score, a moderation action, a Discord audit event, or a weather update.
The automatic restart is convenient, but it is also a production risk. Schedule changes between events, warn connected drivers, and keep a known-good configuration so you can remove the last package if a restart exposes a compatibility problem.

When this manager is the best fit
Choose the managed route when your priority is a working feature with minimal file administration. It is particularly practical for a community that wants Discord-connected rankings, moderation, and a web-managed update process. It is less suitable when you need code that is not represented by one of the listed packages or when you require complete control over deployment timing and configuration files.
AssettoServer: the self-hosted foundation
AssettoServer is a dedicated-server implementation with Steam authentication, AI traffic, dynamic weather support, and an experimental plugin interface. Its documentation describes the interface plainly: “There is an experimental plugin interface for adding functionality to the server.” Experimental means you should test changes on a staging instance and expect more operator responsibility than with a managed package.
Core capabilities
- Steam authentication: the Steam Auth API is used to prevent SteamID spoofing.
- AI traffic: servers can combine human sessions with AI traffic where the chosen track and configuration support it.
- Dynamic weather: weather can change during operation when the client and server meet the CSP requirements.
- Plugin interface: custom functionality can be added, but the interface is documented as experimental rather than a stability guarantee.
Built-in behavior is controlled through extra_cfg.yml. Keep that file under version control or make dated backups before changing authentication, weather, or traffic settings.

These are different operating models, not interchangeable presets. Live weather introduces an external data dependency, random weather prioritizes variety, and voting weather adds a player-interaction step that must be communicated in the session flow.
Compatibility gates you must check first
AssettoServer’s Steam-authentication flow uses session tickets. It requires CSP 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573 or newer for clients using that flow. Dynamic-weather features require CSP 0.1.76 or newer. These are minimum versions, not recommendations to update blindly on race night; validate the exact combination on a test server and tell drivers what they need before an event.

Self-hosted installation workflow
- Install the AssettoServer build appropriate for your operating system and place it in a dedicated server directory.
- Copy your existing track, car, and session configuration into the new instance, preserving a backup of the prior server.
- Edit
extra_cfg.ymlfor the authentication, traffic, and weather behavior you intend to use. - Deploy only the plugin files required for the chosen feature, keeping each plugin in a separately named folder when the documentation allows it.
- Start the server in a test environment and read the startup log for configuration, dependency, and plugin-load errors.
- Connect with a client that satisfies the relevant CSP and Content Manager minimums.
- Run a short practice session, then a complete restart, to confirm that the feature survives both a clean start and a player join.
- Promote the tested configuration to the live instance and monitor the first event rather than assuming a successful startup proves correct behavior.
Why operators choose AssettoServer
AssettoServer is the strongest fit when you need server ownership and security controls, want AI traffic, or plan to build around weather extensibility. Steam authentication is valuable when preventing SteamID spoofing is part of your moderation model. The trade-off is maintenance: you own file deployment, version compatibility, backups, and rollback decisions.
Assetto Server Manager: executable plugins and Lua automation
Assetto Server Manager supports two extensibility paths: external executable plugins and Lua scripts. Its example configuration documents external executable plugins and plugin chaining, while the Lua guide explains that scripts run through hooks and are loaded from the server-manager/plugins folder.
Lua requirements and configuration
The project labels Lua explicitly: “Lua plugins are a premium Server Manager feature!” Enable it in config.yml with:

Plugin chaining lets one component pass work to another, but it also creates a dependency chain: a failure or timeout in an earlier component can prevent later actions. Keep chains short, log each hand-off, and test the behavior when one executable is unavailable.

When Server Manager is the right choice
Use this route when your league already operates Assetto Server Manager and needs custom automation rather than a packaged leaderboard or weather feature. It is a natural home for bespoke registration flows, scheduled messages, session housekeeping, or integrations that your team can maintain. It is not the simplest starting point for a server that only needs a standard timing board; a managed package may require less code and fewer moving parts.

The managed Leaderboard Drift package is the direct option for drift communities. Before enabling it for a major event, run representative drift sessions and confirm that scores are recorded after reconnects and restarts; the package name alone does not establish how your chosen car and track combination will score.
Live or changing weather
Use the managed Live Weather package for a panel-driven workflow. Choose AssettoServer when you need to select among realtime, random, and player-voted weather behavior. Confirm the CSP minimum before advertising dynamic weather, because clients below the required version cannot use that feature correctly.
Moderation and audit trails
Auto Moderation is the low-maintenance choice for routine enforcement, while Discord Audit is aimed at recording events for staff. Server Manager is preferable when moderation rules are unique to your league and must call other services or follow a custom escalation process.

Race challenges and scheduled events
Race Challenge is designed for a managed, repeatable challenge format. For a league with a bespoke event lifecycle—registration, check-in, heats, results, and announcements—Server Manager hooks or executables provide more control, at the cost of writing and monitoring that workflow.
Security and mixed human/AI sessions
AssettoServer is the clear candidate when SteamID spoofing protection and AI traffic are central requirements. Its Steam-auth session-ticket flow has explicit client prerequisites, so include those versions in your driver instructions and test with a clean client profile.
A safe rollout procedure for any plugin
- Define one outcome. Write down the event that should prove success, such as a lap appearing in a leaderboard or a weather transition occurring.
- Record the baseline. Back up the server directory, configuration files, plugin folders, and any leaderboard or audit data that must not be lost.
- Check prerequisites. Verify the management plan, server implementation, CSP level, Content Manager version, and any external service credentials.
- Change one component. Do not install timing, weather, moderation, and a script chain in one restart. Isolating changes makes the first failing component identifiable.
- Read the startup log. A successful process launch is not enough; look for plugin-load, authentication, dependency, and configuration warnings.
- Test with a real client. Join, complete the action, disconnect, reconnect, and restart the server. Many failures appear only at a session boundary.

Do not confuse CSP client apps with server plugins
Custom Shaders Patch documentation covers Python-app and Lua-app APIs, including track-condition controls and mirror functions. Those are client-side applications, not server plugins. They can be part of a complete feature only when every required player has the matching client installation.
Use a client app when the behavior belongs in the driver’s interface or local rendering. Use a server plugin when the behavior must be authoritative for all players, such as moderation, result recording, authentication, or a shared weather state. Calling a client script a server plugin can lead to false expectations about enforcement and compatibility.
