For a full-screen portrait video, start with a 9:16 canvas, commonly 1080×1920. Export a progressive MP4 using H.264, variable bitrate, and the same frame rate as your source. Those settings are a practical baseline, not a universal rule for every service: YouTube publishes its own encoding recommendations, while current organic-upload limits for Instagram Reels and TikTok should be checked in each platform’s help center before you render a final file.
The most common failures have straightforward causes. Cropping usually comes from a mismatch between your project shape and the destination player; blur usually comes from aggressive transcoding, too little bitrate for the motion and detail in the clip, upscaling, or an avoidable frame-rate conversion.
Choose the aspect ratio before you edit
Aspect ratio is the relationship between a frame’s width and height. A 9:16 frame is taller than it is wide, so it fills a phone held upright. A 16:9 frame is widescreen, while 1:1 is square. The ratio is independent of the file’s pixel dimensions: 720×1280 and 1080×1920 are both 9:16.

Use 9:16 for a full-screen portrait composition
Set the sequence or project to 9:16 when the viewer is expected to watch vertically. A 1080×1920 project is a practical Full HD portrait canvas and gives you enough pixels for readable text and detailed faces without treating that exact size as a verified requirement for every organic upload.

Do not rotate a landscape edit at the end and assume the result is equivalent to a portrait project. Build the composition in the final orientation so you can position faces, captions, graphics and action around the vertical crop from the beginning.
When square or horizontal can be appropriate
A square or horizontal file can still be accepted by some destinations. YouTube says its player adapts to vertical and square uploads, and YouTube Shorts accepts square or vertical videos. That flexibility does not make square the best choice for a full-screen portrait presentation: a square upload generally leaves part of a phone display unused or depends on the app’s surrounding interface.
Use a different ratio when the source, campaign placement or editorial design requires it. For example, a landscape interview may remain 16:9 for a widescreen player, while a square product demonstration can be intentional when the same framing must work in a feed that gives equal width and height to posts.
What the published platform guidance actually says
Platform rules differ by product and by whether the upload is an organic post or a paid advertisement. The figures below should not be blended into one universal preset.

The TikTok figures in the table come from TikTok for Business guidance dated June 2026 and apply to Non-Spark in-feed advertising. They are not evidence of the limits for an ordinary organic TikTok post. Do not use an ad specification to promise that an organic upload will be accepted.

Current first-party organic-upload limits and export recommendations for Instagram Reels and ordinary TikTok posts were not established in the available material. Before exporting for either service, open the current creator or help documentation in your region and check the upload screen itself. Limits can change independently of advertising documentation.
Recommended export settings for a 9:16 master
A master file should preserve the composition and motion of your edit. You can then create platform-specific derivatives instead of repeatedly downloading and re-encoding a file that has already been compressed.
Canvas and pixel dimensions
- Aspect ratio: 9:16 for full-screen portrait video.
- Common canvas: 1080×1920 pixels.
- Scaling: avoid enlarging a smaller source to 1080×1920 unless the loss of detail is acceptable; upscaling cannot recreate detail that was never recorded.
- Orientation metadata: render a genuinely portrait frame rather than relying on a phone’s rotation flag that another service may interpret differently.
Frame rate
Keep the export frame rate matched to the recorded source when uploading to YouTube. YouTube’s published wording is: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” If your camera captured 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second, use that rate in the sequence and export unless you have a deliberate creative reason to change it.
Changing 30 fps footage to 60 fps does not create genuine intermediate motion. An editor must duplicate or interpolate frames, which can produce judder, ghosting or a file that needs more bitrate without adding source detail. Conversely, forcing 60 fps footage into 30 fps can discard motion samples. If a delivery specification requires conversion, inspect fast pans, hands and scrolling text after the conversion rather than assuming the preset is harmless.
Container, codec and scan type
For YouTube, the published recommendation is an MP4 container with H.264 video, progressive scan and variable bitrate. Progressive video stores complete frames in sequence; it avoids the comb-like fields associated with interlaced footage on modern phone displays. H.264 in an MP4 container is also a broadly practical interchange choice, but a service may transcode whatever you upload, so compatibility is not the same as a guarantee of identical quality after processing.

Bitrate
Bitrate is the amount of video data allocated per second. More is not automatically better: a high bitrate cannot repair soft focus or a low-resolution source, while an unnecessarily low bitrate can turn foliage, hair, smoke, water and fast movement into blocks.

Those numbers are YouTube’s SDR reference recommendations for 1080p, not a validated optimum for every scene, encoder, platform or upload route. The higher reference at 48–60 fps reflects the greater amount of motion information being delivered. They should not be presented as TikTok or Instagram requirements.
Color for SDR delivery
YouTube recommends BT.709 for standard-dynamic-range uploads. Set the project and export color handling consistently so that a phone clip, editing timeline and encoded file do not silently switch color assumptions. A color-space mismatch can make a technically sharp video appear washed out, overly dark or oversaturated even when the aspect ratio is correct.
Design around safe areas and interface overlays
A correctly sized frame can still hide important information beneath a platform’s buttons, captions, profile controls or progress bars. Treat the visible phone screen as a changing layout, not as a blank rectangle.
- Keep names, prices, subtitles and calls to action away from the extreme top, bottom and side edges.
- Place a speaker’s face where controls are unlikely to cover eyes or mouth, then check the destination’s live preview.
- Use margins that survive a crop or a slightly different player treatment; do not make a one-pixel edge the boundary of a critical word.
- Preview both with and without captions. A caption block can expand the occupied safe area even when the video itself has not changed.
TikTok’s advertising documentation provides downloadable safe-zone files and notes that safe-zone dimensions depend on the format and caption length. That guidance is for advertising placements. It is not an exact universal safe-zone measurement for every organic post, so use the preview for the specific placement you are publishing.

Why a vertical video gets cropped
The project and source have different shapes
If a 16:9 source is placed in a 9:16 sequence, the editor must either crop the sides, letterbox the image, or scale it until the subject fits. “Fill” or “cover” modes usually crop; “fit” modes usually add empty space. Neither is a platform error. Decide which part of the original frame matters and reframe it intentionally.
The destination applies a placement-specific crop
A service can use one crop in a profile grid, another in a feed, and another in an advertisement preview. A file that looks correct on a full-screen viewer may lose its top or bottom in a thumbnail. Review the actual placement and keep essential content inside the conservative central area.
Rotation or metadata was interpreted differently
Some phones record a landscape pixel matrix with a rotation instruction. If an editor or uploader ignores that instruction, the service may display the pixels sideways or crop them as landscape. Export a portrait pixel matrix from the editor and inspect the rendered file locally before uploading.
Text and subjects were positioned at the edge
Even a technically correct 9:16 file can appear cropped when an overlay covers a caption or a face. Move critical elements inward, shorten captions, and verify the live preview instead of trying to solve an interface overlap with a different codec.
Why the upload looks blurry
Insufficient bitrate for the scene
Flat walls may look acceptable at a low bitrate while confetti, leaves, hair, water or camera movement break into macroblocks. Use the platform’s published reference where one exists, and inspect a short, motion-heavy section before committing to a long export.

Repeated encoding
Exporting, downloading, editing again and exporting again compounds compression. Keep a high-quality master and make the delivery file directly from the timeline whenever possible.
Upscaling a small original
A 540×960 source enlarged to 1080×1920 occupies more pixels but contains no additional captured detail. Start with the camera’s native resolution and avoid unnecessary resize steps.
Frame-rate conversion and motion artifacts
Duplicated or interpolated frames can make motion appear smeared. Match the source rate for YouTube uploads, and inspect any required conversion at normal playback speed and frame by frame around fast movement.

Platform transcoding
Services commonly create their own playback versions after ingest. A clean local master can therefore look different online. Compare the uploaded preview at the service’s normal viewing size; do not infer the final result from a tiny thumbnail or from a download that has been processed a second time.

- Identify the destination. Write down the exact product and placement: YouTube upload, YouTube Short, an organic feed post or a paid in-feed ad. Mark whether the rule is organic or advertising guidance.
- Inspect the source. Note the source orientation, pixel dimensions and recorded frame rate. Do not choose a frame rate merely because an online preset lists it.
- Create the final sequence. For full-screen portrait, set a 9:16 frame such as 1080×1920. Place the source, then choose crop, fit or a designed background deliberately.
- Build a safe composition. Keep faces, captions and essential graphics away from interface edges. Check the longest caption because it may occupy more vertical space than shorter captions.
- Set motion and color. Match the source frame rate for YouTube delivery, use progressive scan and keep SDR color handling consistent with BT.709 when following YouTube’s recommendation.
- Choose the encoder. Use MP4 with H.264 and variable bitrate for a YouTube-compatible delivery file. Set the bitrate according to the destination’s documented guidance; use YouTube’s 8 Mbps or 12 Mbps 1080p SDR references only for the corresponding frame-rate categories.
- Review the rendered file. Watch the beginning, high-motion sections, captions and the final seconds. Confirm that the file opens as portrait, that no rotation flag is required, and that text remains legible.
- Upload and inspect the real placement. Use the platform’s preview, not just the file on your computer. Check feed, profile and full-screen views when they are available.
- Keep the master. Save the project and a high-quality export so a later rule change can be handled without recompressing an already compressed upload.
Platform-specific practical recipes
YouTube vertical upload
For a 9:16 YouTube video, export a portrait frame and let the player adapt to it. Use MP4, H.264, progressive scan, variable bitrate, the recorded frame rate and BT.709 for SDR. For 1080p, YouTube’s reference is 8 Mbps at 24/25/30 fps or 12 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps. These are recommendations for YouTube’s upload encoding, not a promise that another service will use the same values.
YouTube Shorts
Make the file square or vertical and keep it at three minutes or less to meet the published Shorts description. A 9:16 file remains the natural choice when the creative goal is a full-screen portrait experience; the fact that square is accepted does not require you to design square content.
TikTok paid in-feed advertising
For a Non-Spark in-feed ad, TikTok for Business recommends 9:16 at a minimum of 540×960 pixels and lists a 10-minute maximum, 500 MB maximum file size and 516 kbps minimum bitrate. Confirm the current specification for the campaign and placement before export, because those figures describe the cited advertising product rather than ordinary organic uploads.

Do not label a particular resolution, duration, codec or file-size ceiling as a current organic rule without checking the service’s own documentation. Use a clean 9:16 master when full-screen portrait is the goal, then verify the live upload screen and preview for the account, region and placement you are actually using.

Key decisions before you press Export
- Is the intended viewing experience full-screen portrait? If yes, use 9:16 and a proportionate canvas such as 1080×1920.
- Is the destination rule for an organic post or an advertisement? Treat those as separate specifications.
- Does the export preserve the recorded frame rate, progressive scan and a compatible MP4/H.264 delivery format?
- Are bitrate and color settings tied to the named platform rather than copied from a generic preset?
- Have you checked captions, faces and product details in the actual placement preview?
