For the best balance in Arma Reforger, begin at your display’s native resolution with 100% render scale. If the GPU cannot hold your target frame rate, enable FSR 1.0 at Quality (67%), then Balanced (59%), and finally Performance (50%). If those changes barely improve performance, lower view distance and shadows, then investigate a CPU or simulation limit rather than continuing to sacrifice image quality. On PS5, Fidelity targets 30 FPS with higher settings; Performance lowers resolution and detail to target 60 FPS.
A practical starting point for PC
There is no single universal “best FPS” number for Arma Reforger. A large multiplayer operation, heavy weather, numerous AI units, mods and scripted missions can load the game very differently from an empty test area. Use the following order so that each change answers a specific question instead of turning every option to Low.
- Set your monitor’s native resolution and 100% render scale.
- Choose an FPS limit close to the rate your system can actually sustain.
- If the GPU is the limit, test FSR 1.0 Quality, Balanced and then Performance.
- Reduce view distance and shadows before lowering every other option.
- Keep textures and filtering as high as available VRAM allows.
- If GPU reductions produce little change, diagnose CPU, simulation, background-process or server limits.
Settings labels and defaults can change between patches, so check the current Video menu after an update.
Resolution and render scale: preserve native image quality first
Use the monitor’s native resolution at 100% render scale as the baseline. Bohemia Interactive’s Video Settings guidance warns that lowering the rendered resolution can improve performance dramatically, but at a very high image-quality cost. Fine text, distant players, foliage and weapon sights become softer, and reducing resolution does not fix a CPU-bound frame rate.

Only lower render scale after confirming that the GPU is saturated or that a GPU-focused test produces a meaningful frame-rate increase. Change one step at a time and replay the same short section of a mission. If frame rate barely moves, restore the higher scale and work on CPU-heavy settings instead.
When a lower scale is justified
- Your GPU usage is consistently high while one repeatable scene is slow.
- FSR or a lower scale produces a clear increase in the same scene.
- You prefer steadier motion over maximum fine detail at your chosen display resolution.
When not to lower it
- Frame rate remains almost unchanged after a GPU-resolution test.
- The main problem occurs during large firefights, crowded bases or heavy scripting, where simulation and CPU work dominate.
- Distant identification and sight clarity are more important to you than a small gain that is not sustained.
FSR 1.0: use the documented scales as controlled steps
FSR 1.0 is a useful step-down when native rendering is GPU-limited. The current diagnostic-menu reference lists these input scales:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| FSR 1.0 option | Internal render scale | How to use it | Image-quality trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra | 77% | Optional intermediate test when Quality is more performance than you need. | Smallest reduction among the listed FSR modes; still below native 100%. |
| Quality | 67% | First recommended GPU-limited step. | Noticeably softer than native, but usually the least aggressive documented preset for a substantial gain. |
| Balanced | 59% | Use when Quality does not hold your target rate. | More softness and reconstruction artifacts, especially on distant detail. |
| Performance | 50% | Last resort before accepting a lower native output resolution or reducing more detail. | Largest loss of fine detail among these choices. |
These percentages are diagnostic starting points, not guarantees for every GPU, resolution or patch. Leave FSR off when native 100% already delivers the frame rate you want. Compare each mode in motion, not only from a still screenshot: foliage shimmer, thin geometry and target recognition matter in a tactical shooter.
Lower view distance and shadows before broad quality cuts
Bohemia Interactive’s support guidance specifically recommends lowering graphics settings, especially view distance and shadows, when performance is low. They affect different parts of the workload, so test them separately.
View distance
View or draw distance determines how far terrain, objects and other scene elements are considered for rendering. Long distances can increase both CPU submission work and GPU rendering. They also affect tactical visibility, so use small reductions rather than immediately selecting the minimum. After each change, check a long sightline and a busy settlement. If a large reduction has almost no effect, the bottleneck may be CPU-side or in simulation rather than distant rendering.

Shadows
Dynamic and cascade shadows can be expensive during daylight, changing weather and scenes with many objects. Reduce shadow quality after view distance or test both in isolation to see which one your system responds to. Check character silhouettes, interiors and foliage after the change; an overly low shadow setting can make depth and cover harder to read even when the frame rate improves.
Environment quality
Environment quality controls volumetric clouds, sky rendering, fog, cascade shadows and rain quality. Lower it when storms, fog banks or cloud-heavy skies cause spikes. Because weather and lighting are mission-dependent, validate the setting in the conditions that normally trouble your system rather than assuming a clear daytime scene represents the whole game.
Keep the settings that protect clarity
Textures and texture filtering
Texture detail and filtering primarily determine surface and material clarity. Keep them higher when your graphics card has enough VRAM, because reducing them often makes weapons, buildings and terrain look worse without addressing a CPU limit. The official settings reference documents these controls but does not publish universal FPS gains for each quality level. If you see texture streaming problems, lower texture detail one step and watch VRAM use rather than cutting render resolution first.
Anti-aliasing
The Video menu lists FXAA and SMAA choices. Select the least expensive option that removes the shimmer you find distracting. Anti-aliasing costs vary with resolution and hardware, so compare while moving through foliage and looking across fences or wires. If an option introduces blur, test the alternative instead of compensating by lowering the entire render scale.
Depth of field
Depth of field can be set to None, Simple or Bokeh. None gives the clearest unfiltered view and removes the effect’s processing; Simple or Bokeh may look more cinematic but can soften weapon and background detail. Choose it for visual preference after the larger view-distance, shadow and resolution decisions are settled.

FPS limit and V-Sync
Set an FPS cap near the rate your system can sustain in the demanding scenes you actually play. A cap can reduce wasted rendering and large swings when the GPU is otherwise racing above your display’s useful refresh rate. V-Sync can eliminate tearing, but it may add input latency. Test it with your preferred cap: competitive players may favor lower latency, while players who are sensitive to tearing may prefer synchronized output.
Preset choices by bottleneck
The table is a decision aid, not a promise of a particular frame rate. The game has no authoritative universal FPS target for every PC, and no independent benchmark is established here.
| Profile | Target | Resolution and FSR | View distance | Shadows and environment | Clarity and latency | Likely limiting factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native visual baseline | Your sustainable target; no universal number published | Native display resolution, 100%; FSR off | High enough for tactical visibility | Start high, then reduce only the setting that causes a measured drop | Preferred FXAA/SMAA; depth of field by preference; cap near sustained rate | Unconfirmed until tested |
| GPU quality step | Your sustainable target after a small image-quality trade-off | Native output with FSR Quality, 67% | Keep initially; reduce if still GPU-bound | Lower shadows or environment one step if needed | More latency depends on frame rate and V-Sync, not FSR alone | GPU pressure reduced |
| GPU balanced step | Higher consistency when Quality is insufficient | Native output with FSR Balanced, 59% | Moderate reduction only if testing shows a benefit | Moderate shadows/environment | Inspect distant shimmer and sight clarity | GPU-bound workload |
| Emergency GPU step | Maximum available performance before hardware changes | Native output with FSR Performance, 50% | Lower carefully; preserve critical sightlines | Low-to-moderate values as required | Expect the softest image; retain a sensible cap | Strongly GPU-bound workload |
| CPU or simulation-limited | Whatever the simulation can sustain | Native 100% if image quality matters; FSR may not help | Small reduction to test CPU relief | Lower view distance and shadows first; environment only if it changes the result | Keep textures and filtering high when VRAM permits | CPU, scripting, AI, server or background workload |
Diagnose the real limit in a repeatable test
Do not judge a setting from a single chaotic firefight. Pick a repeatable scene or a short section of a mission, record the average and the low points, and change one variable at a time. The following sequence separates GPU pressure from CPU and simulation limits.
- Record a baseline. Use the same location, weather and camera route. Note average FPS and the low moments you care about; this is a comparison method, not a published benchmark.
- Test render work. Enable FSR Quality or lower render scale temporarily. A clear increase in the same scene indicates that GPU headroom was recovered. If the change is barely visible in the frame-rate reading, return to native scale.
- Test distance and shadows. Lower view distance, then shadows, and replay the route. Little movement while the scene remains busy points toward a CPU or simulation constraint.
- Check system basics. Close unnecessary background applications and confirm that the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements, matching Bohemia Interactive’s support advice.
- Check the context. Compare an empty or lightly populated area with the multiplayer operation that causes the slowdown. A large difference implicates AI, scripts, networking or server-side simulation rather than a simple graphics preset.
Arma Reforger’s Everon setting is listed by Bohemia Interactive as 52 km² (2022). Large sightlines and active scenarios can therefore expose limits that a small test area hides.
Why lowering every graphics option may not fix slow performance
CPU performance plays a major role in Arma Reforger. The engine must process simulation, AI, physics, networking, mission scripts and draw-call submission in addition to preparing GPU work. If those tasks are the limit, turning textures, anti-aliasing and resolution down can leave FPS nearly unchanged while making the image worse.

- CPU-bound symptom: large reductions to render scale or FSR produce little change, especially during crowded combat.
- Simulation-bound symptom: slowdowns track AI activity, scripted events or player population more than camera direction.
- GPU-bound symptom: FSR or render-scale reductions produce a clear increase, particularly in effects-heavy weather or high-resolution output.
- Mixed limit: a setting helps in one scene but not another; use separate profiles or accept that mission conditions set the floor.
Do not present a single preset as universally best. Multiplayer population, mods, weather, lighting and mission scripting can all change the workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PS5 and PS5 Pro: choose a priority, not a hidden “best” mode
Bohemia Interactive describes two PS5 priorities. Fidelity uses higher visual settings and targets 30 FPS. Performance lowers settings and resolution to target 60 FPS. The choice is therefore image detail versus responsiveness; select Fidelity for a sharper, richer presentation when 30 FPS is acceptable, or Performance when camera movement and input response matter more.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| PS5 mode | Target | Resolution and settings | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | 30 FPS target | Higher visual settings; exact native/render resolution is not stated in the mode description | Players who prioritize detail and are comfortable with a lower frame rate |
| Performance | 60 FPS target | Lower settings and resolution | Players who prioritize smoother motion and lower perceived latency |
On PS5 Pro, the native image is higher before being upscaled to 2160p with FSR 1.0, according to Bohemia Interactive’s PS5 analysis. That does not turn the two modes into identical presentations; it remains a quality-versus-frame-rate decision. Arma Reforger is also listed for Xbox Series X/S, but the supplied mode description does not establish equivalent Fidelity and Performance labels or targets for Xbox, so do not assume the PS5 behavior applies there.
Night grain and patch-sensitive defaults
A November 21, 2025 update disabled night grain by default and disabled it on official servers after player feedback. Do not recommend enabling night grain as a universal visibility fix. Check the current build and the rules of the server you are joining; a local option may not override an official-server policy.
Common problems and targeted fixes
“FSR made the image blurry.”
Return to native 100% or step back from Performance to Balanced or Quality. Inspect moving foliage, thin wires and distant targets, not just a static menu. Keep textures and filtering high when VRAM permits so the resolution reduction is not compounded by low surface detail.

“Lowering resolution did nothing.”
Restore native resolution and test view distance and shadows. Confirm that background applications are closed and that the system meets minimum requirements. A flat result is consistent with a CPU, simulation or server limit, particularly in crowded missions.
“The game tears, but V-Sync feels sluggish.”
Compare V-Sync on and off with an FPS cap near your sustainable rate. Use the combination that matches your latency tolerance; neither choice is universally correct.
“Performance changes between servers.”
That is expected when population, mods, weather, lighting and scripts differ. Keep a native-quality profile and a GPU-saving profile, and validate each in the type of operation you normally play.
“The image is still soft at 100%.”
Verify that the output resolution is actually the monitor’s native value, that FSR is off, and that an aggressive anti-aliasing or depth-of-field choice is not adding blur. Settings labels and defaults may move after patches.
Quick Recap
A concise decision path
- Start native resolution, 100% scale, FSR off.
- Set a cap close to your sustained frame rate and decide whether V-Sync’s tear prevention is worth its possible latency.
- For a GPU limit, use FSR Quality 67%, then Balanced 59%, then Performance 50%.
- For low FPS that does not respond to GPU changes, reduce view distance and shadows and investigate CPU or simulation load.
- Keep textures and filtering high when VRAM allows; tune environment quality for weather-heavy scenes.
- On PS5, choose Fidelity for the 30 FPS visual target or Performance for the 60 FPS target.
- Recheck settings after patches, especially defaults and server-enforced options such as night grain.
