Create a valid JSON configuration
Server configuration is JSON and parameter names are case-sensitive. A capitalization mistake can prevent a setting from being read even when the file looks syntactically correct. Players cannot see or join the server
- Verify that the server process is running and listening on the intended machine.
- Check the host firewall and router forward for UDP port 2001.
- Confirm that the router forwards to the machine’s current private IP address.
- Test from outside the home network; a local test can succeed even when inbound forwarding is broken.
- For a managed host, provide the provider with the server ID, timestamp and log excerpt rather than repeatedly changing settings.
Query tools show no server
Check the A2S query port, 17777, separately from the game port. A server can accept game traffic while query traffic is blocked. Confirm that the provider or firewall has not remapped the port and that your query tool is using the current address.
Mods fail to load or players are kicked
- Confirm that the server and every client have the same mod versions and load order.
- Check available disk space and the provider’s mod-storage limit.
- Restart after a mod update instead of relying on a hot reload.
- Restore the last known-good backup, then add the changed mod again to isolate the conflict.
Updates break the configuration
Take a backup before an automatic or manual update. Because JSON keys are case-sensitive, compare the updated example configuration with your saved file and check logs for rejected parameters.
