LinuxGSM is the best default for most people running an Arma 3 dedicated server on a self-managed Linux host. It wraps SteamCMD installation and updates with configuration, query, console, restart, and service-management commands, while leaving Bohemia Interactive’s official server executable and configuration model intact. Choose a web panel such as TCAdmin instead when several administrators need browser access, scheduled tasks, and management of multiple game services.
Your choice should follow the way you operate: LinuxGSM favors automation, transparency, and low overhead; a panel favors convenience, delegation, and centralized administration. Neither tool fixes an incorrectly configured server, incompatible mods, inadequate firewall rules, or poor backup practices.
What an Arma 3 server manager actually does
An Arma 3 server manager is an operations layer around the dedicated game server. It does not replace the game server binary. Bohemia Interactive provides a Linux executable to launch the server, along with the server.cfg configuration model and profile-related settings. A manager installs that software, starts and stops it, passes startup parameters, applies updates, exposes logs and console controls, and helps you repeat the same process after a reboot.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. If the executable, configuration syntax, mission, network port, or mod is wrong, changing managers will not make the underlying issue disappear. The manager determines how consistently you deploy and operate the server.

There are no authoritative, independent benchmarks establishing that one option provides higher uptime, lower latency, or a larger player capacity. Select on workflow and supportability rather than an invented performance ranking.
Why LinuxGSM is the recommended default
It targets Arma 3 directly
LinuxGSM has a dedicated Arma 3 server target. Its documented workflow installs the files through SteamCMD, creates a repeatable service layout, and supplies commands for common lifecycle operations. The current default configuration identifies Arma 3’s server application as 233780 and uses port 2302 unless you change the configuration.

LinuxGSM does not hide the settings that determine how Arma 3 behaves. You can inspect and edit the server configuration, profile data, startup parameters, query mode, and port assignments on the host. That makes changes reviewable in version control or backups and lets you use Bohemia’s documentation directly when a setting needs explanation.
It supports repeatable operations
Install, start, stop, restart, update, monitor, and console functions are exposed as script commands rather than a sequence of ad hoc shell commands. Repeatability is especially valuable after a kernel update, a host migration, or a failed mod update. You can also schedule the manager’s update and restart commands with the host’s normal scheduler.
It documents a headless-client pattern
LinuxGSM documents running a headless client as a separate LinuxGSM instance. A headless client joins the server without rendering a game window and can take on AI calculations. It still requires the Arma 3 server to be configured for that client, and it consumes CPU, memory, network, and another process slot. Treat it as an additional service to monitor, not as a checkbox that automatically improves performance.

What the official Bohemia Interactive setup still controls
Use Bohemia Interactive’s Arma 3 Dedicated Server documentation as the authority for the executable, server.cfg structure, profile location, and launch behavior. The documentation explicitly provides a Linux executable and instructs operators to run the server under a dedicated steam user rather than root or another administrator.
Run under a dedicated service account
- Create or use a dedicated account such as
steamfor the server files and process. - Keep ownership of the installation, configuration, logs, and profile directories consistent with that account.
- Do not launch the game server as root. Root-owned files commonly appear after a mistaken manual command and then prevent normal updates or restarts.
- Give administrators narrowly scoped access through group membership or controlled service commands instead of sharing the service account’s credentials.
Separate the game layer from the manager layer
The manager starts the official executable with your selected parameters. If a mission fails to load, a server.cfg directive is invalid, or a mod is incompatible, diagnose that game-layer problem in the official configuration and logs. If a service fails to start after reboot, an update does not run, or permissions are wrong, diagnose the manager and host layer.
Installing an Arma 3 server with LinuxGSM
The exact filenames can change with LinuxGSM releases, so use the current Arma 3 target and its generated help output on your host. The operational sequence is stable:
- Prepare a supported Linux host. Create a dedicated service account, apply operating-system updates, set the correct time zone, and decide where game files, profiles, logs, and backups will live.
- Install required host dependencies. LinuxGSM’s installer and SteamCMD identify the packages needed by the target. Install them from your distribution’s supported repositories rather than copying libraries from an unrelated machine.
- Install the LinuxGSM Arma 3 target. Download the LinuxGSM launcher, create the Arma 3 server target (commonly represented as
arma3server), and run its install action as the dedicated service user. - Verify the Steam application. Confirm that the installation uses app ID
233780, that the files are owned by the service account, and that SteamCMD completed without authentication or disk-space errors. - Configure the server. Set the hostname, passwords, mission rotation, player limits, logging, network ports, and startup parameters in the generated configuration files. Keep a copy of the original files so you can identify changes.
- Open and document the network path. Permit the configured game and query ports in the host firewall and any cloud or router firewall. The LinuxGSM default game port is 2302; changing it requires changing every corresponding firewall and query rule.
- Start and query the service. Start the server with the LinuxGSM command, inspect its console and logs, and query it from a client on the intended network. A successful process start is not proof that the server is publicly reachable.
- Automate recovery. Add a controlled restart policy and schedule backups before routine updates. Test a reboot so you know the service account, paths, firewall rules, and startup action all work without an interactive shell.
Do not paste a command copied from an old tutorial without checking the target’s current help output. LinuxGSM scripts, distribution packages, and SteamCMD authentication behavior can change even when the Arma 3 configuration model does not.
Updating safely with LinuxGSM
Plan the maintenance window
Tell players when the server will restart, record the current game and mod state, and make a backup of server.cfg, profile data, mission files, mod metadata, and any custom scripts. Leave enough disk space for SteamCMD to download and stage changed files.

Run the manager’s update action
Use LinuxGSM’s documented update command for the Arma 3 target. Watch the SteamCMD output for login, manifest, disk, or filesystem errors. Do not interrupt a file replacement halfway through; a partial installation is harder to diagnose than a clean failed update.
Restart and validate
Restart the service after the update, then check the process, console, logs, server listing, mission rotation, and a real client connection. If the game update changed a dependency, test the complete mod set rather than assuming yesterday’s load order remains valid.
Keep rollback material
SteamCMD does not replace the need for backups. Preserve the previous configuration and mod manifest, and know how to restore them. If the executable itself requires a version rollback, follow the game platform’s supported depot or branch method; do not overwrite binaries with files from an unknown archive.
Managing Arma 3 mods without creating an unmaintainable server
Choose one distribution method per mod
LinuxGSM documents both Steam Workshop installation and manual downloads. Workshop distribution can simplify obtaining a known item, while manual distribution may be necessary for a private package or a workflow that does not use Workshop. Mixing methods without a manifest makes it difficult to prove which version is installed.
Record identity, version, and load order
- Keep the Workshop item identity or the exact archive name for every mod.
- Record the date and source of a manual download and retain a checksum where practical.
- Document the order in which the server loads mods and the matching client launch order.
- Store required server keys in the location expected by Arma 3 and verify permissions after copying them.
- Maintain a tested “last known good” mod set so an update can be reversed without guesswork.
Expect incompatibility
LinuxGSM’s documentation warns that mods can be unstable or incompatible. A server that worked before an update may fail because a mod depends on a different game version, conflicts with another mod, contains a bad configuration, or is missing its key. Test changes on a staging instance when the community depends on uninterrupted access. Add mods one at a time when isolating a failure, and inspect the server log for the first error rather than the final cascade of messages.

Adding a headless client
A headless client is a separate Arma 3 client process that connects to your server and can offload AI calculations. LinuxGSM’s documented approach is to create another LinuxGSM instance for that client rather than treating it as part of the main server process.
- Create a separate service identity or instance directory so the headless client’s files, logs, and profile do not collide with the dedicated server.
- Install the matching Arma 3 client files and the same required mod set. A version or mod mismatch can prevent the client from joining.
- Configure the server to accept and use the headless client, following the Arma 3 configuration requirements for your mission and authentication setup.
- Assign distinct ports and startup parameters where required, and allow the connection through the host firewall.
- Start the headless-client instance after the server, then confirm its connection in the server console and logs.
- Monitor CPU, memory, and process health. Stop the client if it increases instability or competes with the server for resources.
Headless clients are most useful for missions whose AI workload is significant and predictable. They are not a universal latency fix, and no supplied source establishes a guaranteed player-count increase.

When a web panel such as TCAdmin is the better choice
Use a panel for delegated administration
TCAdmin is suitable when staff need browser-based access to start, stop, restart, inspect, and update services without shell access. A panel can also centralize several game servers or other services under one account and provide role-based permissions that are cumbersome to reproduce with individual shell scripts.
Use scheduled SteamCMD tasks
TCAdmin documents configuring SteamCMD, selecting a game server, and invoking a “Steam Update” action. It also documents scheduled tasks and Steam Guard handling. This is useful when you want recurring updates and restarts managed from one interface, provided you still test updates against your mod set.
Confirm the template before committing
Panel support depends on the installed Arma 3 template and its current capabilities. Before purchase, verify that the template exposes the startup parameters, profile paths, ports, query settings, mod workflow, console, and scheduled actions you require. Also confirm licensing, user limits, and whether the panel can run on your chosen Linux distribution.

Understand the trade-off
A web panel adds an authentication surface, another service to patch, and an abstraction layer over the files. If its UI hides a setting you need, you may still have to use shell access. Restrict panel access with strong accounts, HTTPS through your normal secure deployment, firewall rules, and separate roles for operators who do not need full host privileges.

Security and reliability checklist
- Run the server and headless client under dedicated non-root accounts.
- Patch the operating system, LinuxGSM, SteamCMD, and panel software on a maintenance schedule.
- Allow only the required game, query, administration, and panel ports through each firewall layer.
- Use unique administrator credentials and limit panel roles to the actions each person needs.
- Back up configuration, profile data, missions, scripts, mod manifests, and keys; test restoring them on another directory or host.
- Monitor disk space, memory, CPU, process state, and log growth. SteamCMD updates and verbose logs can fill a small volume.
- Keep production and staging mod sets separate so an experiment cannot silently alter the public server.
- Record every change to startup parameters, ports, missions, and mods, including who made it and when.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The service will not start
Check ownership first: files created by root or another account can block the dedicated service user. Then inspect the manager output, executable path, missing dependencies, disk space, and the first configuration error in the log. Confirm that no older process is already holding the configured port.
The server starts but is not visible
Verify the configured game and query ports, host firewall, cloud firewall, router forwarding, and query mode. The LinuxGSM default port is 2302, but a changed port must be opened consistently everywhere. Test from a network outside the host rather than relying only on a local connection.
Players are rejected after a mod change
Compare the server’s mod manifest, load order, keys, and versions with the client’s exact set. Remove the newest change temporarily, restart, and add items back one at a time. Read the earliest signature or dependency error in the log.
An update breaks the mission
Restore the previous configuration and known-good mod set, then test the game update and each mod change separately on staging. Do not assume the manager caused the break; establish whether the executable, mission, startup parameter, or mod changed.

Confirm that the client uses matching game and mod versions, has its own profile and ports, is allowed through the firewall, and is started with the parameters required by the server. Check both the client and server logs for authentication or handshake errors.
A practical operating routine
Before opening the server
- Verify the service account, file ownership, free disk space, firewall rules, and backup destination.
- Start the server and inspect the console for configuration, mission, and mod errors.
- Connect with a test client and confirm mission loading, persistence, admin controls, and voice or other required services.
For every planned change
- Write down the current versions and configuration.
- Back up the affected files.
- Change one logical group at a time.
- Test on staging when the change affects mods, missions, or startup parameters.
- Apply to production during a communicated maintenance window and record the result.
After a reboot or failed update
- Confirm the service starts automatically under the correct account.
- Check ports, logs, process health, and external visibility.
- Validate the mission and mod set with a real client.
- Restore the last known-good backup if the failure cannot be isolated quickly.
Bottom line for choosing your tool
Choose LinuxGSM for a self-managed Linux Arma 3 server when you value documented deployment, direct SteamCMD updates, visible configuration, and a supported headless-client pattern. Choose TCAdmin when browser administration, delegated permissions, scheduled SteamCMD tasks, and multi-service management justify a panel’s licensing and maintenance overhead. In either case, keep Bohemia Interactive’s official executable and configuration guidance as the source of truth, run services as non-root users, treat mods as controlled dependencies, and test every update before players depend on it.
