There is no single best ARK setting combination. For a private PvE server, start around 2× XP, 2–3× harvesting, 3–5× taming, and faster breeding that matches your available play time. For PvP, keep progression moderate—usually 2–3× XP and gathering, 3–5× taming—and document every combat, protection and tribe rule before players join. Select PvE or PvP first, then tune rates, difficulty and risk settings around that mode.

Choose PvE or PvP before changing any multiplier

PvE and PvP are server modes, not merely different rate presets. PvE disables player-versus-player damage, while PvP permits combat between players and allows attacks on opposing structures. The mode is selected through the server’s startup or server-configuration parameter, so set and publish it before choosing rates.

A 5× taming multiplier can remove tedious waiting in a cooperative PvE world. In PvP, the same setting can let a new tribe replace losses too quickly and make raids feel disposable. Conversely, very high PvP harvesting and maturation rates can let established tribes rebuild an army or defensive base faster than smaller groups can respond.

  • PvE: Optimize for reduced waiting, predictable progression and enough resource scarcity to preserve exploration, building and creature choices.
  • PvP: Optimize for a readable combat economy. Players should know how quickly they can replace gear, raise defenders, repair structures and recover after a raid.
  • Solo or small groups: Favor time-saving increases, especially taming and breeding, because fewer players share the work.
  • Large communities: Use more conservative rates and publish a ruleset so population advantages do not combine with extreme multipliers.

Practical starting presets

The following are starting points for a private server, not official ARK presets. Adjust only the bottleneck that is frustrating your group, and change one category at a time so you can see its effect.

  • Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
  • Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
  • Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
  • Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
Setting Small-group PvE starting point Casual PvP starting point Why it matters
Experience 2× 2–3× Shortens early unlocks without immediately removing the level-up path.
Harvest amount 2–3× 2–3× Reduces repetitive farming while leaving weight, tool quality and location relevant.
Taming speed 3–5× 3–5× Removes long waits; very high values make lost creatures easy to replace.
Egg hatching 5–10× 5× Shortens incubation, but requires a matching maturation schedule.
Baby maturation 8–15× 8–12× Lets players finish raising creatures in a reasonable session rather than over many real days.
Imprinting Reduce cuddle interval carefully Reduce cuddle interval carefully Faster maturation can make normal imprint windows impossible unless imprint timing is adjusted.
Loot quality Moderate increase Conservative increase Higher quality affects the item economy and can make boss preparation or raiding gear arrive too early.
Difficulty Use the intended map curve, then test Use the intended map curve, then test Difficulty changes wild-creature levels and the frequency of higher-tier items and blueprints.

Do not raise every slider simply because the server is private. If players are waiting for tames, increase taming first. If a breeding project is the problem, change hatching, maturation and imprint timing together. If gathering is slow, increase harvesting rather than also multiplying XP, loot and taming.

Official rates provide useful reference points

Named official configurations are better comparison anchors than vague claims that a server is “boosted.” The official-rate table lists the standard Official cluster at 1×. Small Tribes uses 2× breeding, hatching and raising, plus 3× experience, taming and gathering. Beginner uses 1× official rates, a level-44 player cap, a level-30 wild-dinosaur cap, five-player tribes and no alliances.

Official configuration Published figures How to use it as a benchmark
Official 1× rates Use as the baseline when you want the standard progression pace.
Small Tribes 2× breeding, hatching and raising; 3× experience, taming and gathering A moderate boosted reference for small communities.
Beginner 1× official rates; level-44 player cap; level-30 wild-dinosaur cap; five-player tribes; no alliances Shows that a server can restrict levels and social structures independently of rate multipliers.

These are named configurations, not proof that one setting is best for every map or group. If you advertise a custom server as “3×,” state exactly which categories are 3× and list exceptions such as breeding, loot or structure damage.

Set progression rates as a connected system

Experience

Experience determines how quickly players unlock engrams and reach the server’s level ceiling. A 2× setting is a conservative quality-of-life increase; 3× is more suitable when players have limited evening play time or when a season is intentionally short. Raising XP without adjusting resource, taming or breeding rates can create a character who unlocks advanced crafting long before the tribe has the creatures and materials to use it.

Harvesting

Harvest amount controls the resources obtained from a successful harvest. It does not remove encumbrance, tool durability, travel time or the strategic value of resource locations. Start at 2–3× and observe whether metal, polymer, cementing paste or ammunition becomes effectively unlimited. PvP servers should be especially cautious: a high harvest rate can turn every defeated base into a short-lived setback.

Taming

Taming speed is usually the most noticeable solo and small-group adjustment. A 3–5× range shortens passive and knockout tames while retaining food, trap and protection decisions. Test both ordinary creatures and long-duration carnivores; a setting that feels reasonable for a dodo can make high-value creatures nearly instant.

Hatching, maturation and imprinting

Breeding has three linked time controls:

  • Egg hatching: How long an egg remains incubating.
  • Baby maturation: How quickly a juvenile reaches adulthood.
  • Imprinting: How often a baby requests care and how much time remains to complete those requests.

Raise hatching and maturation together when you want a shorter breeding cycle. Then test whether a player can complete the required imprint actions during the new maturation window. If maturation is extremely fast, a normal cuddle interval may leave no opportunity for 100-percent imprinting. Do not promise a particular imprint result until you have raised at least one representative creature on the actual map and rates.

Player, dinosaur and structure resistance

Damage and resistance multipliers are separate from progression. Increasing player damage does not automatically increase dinosaur or structure damage. Keep a written matrix of player, tamed-dinosaur, wild-dinosaur and structure values, then test weapons, saddles, explosives and repair costs. A change that feels harmless against a wild creature can make a high-armor saddle or raid defense disproportionately strong.

Difficulty, wild-dinosaur levels and loot quality

Difficulty is a progression choice, not simply a combat slider. Higher difficulty values make higher-tier items and blueprints appear more frequently. The OverrideOfficialDifficulty setting can change the default difficulty curve, while loot quality is adjusted separately.

Decide the intended wild level first

Write down the maximum wild-dinosaur level you intend to see on the chosen map. Map rules, difficulty settings and species distributions can produce different results, so do not infer the outcome from a slider label alone. Check several newly spawned creatures after changing difficulty.

Test the loot economy separately

Difficulty and loot quality interact with progression but are not the same control. A server can have high-level wild creatures and modest loot, or ordinary creature levels with unusually strong drops. Test supply crates, fishing loot, cave drops and blueprint quality in the locations your players will actually use.

Apply changes on a test save

  1. Back up the live save and configuration files.
  2. Apply the intended difficulty and loot settings to a fresh test save or a disposable copy.
  3. Inspect newly spawned wild creatures rather than existing ones.
  4. Open representative loot sources and record item quality, armor, weapon damage and blueprint costs.
  5. Only announce the competitive season after the observed levels and loot match the ruleset.

Changing difficulty on an established save can leave an inconsistent population because existing creatures do not necessarily update. Use your server’s documented administrative method to remove and respawn wild creatures when a clean test is required.

PvP settings that must be documented

PvP disputes usually come from rules that were never written down. Publish the following values and the times at which they apply:

Rule area What to specify Why players need it
Player combat Player damage and resistance; whether friendly fire is enabled Defines how quickly players die and whether tribe members can injure one another.
Dinosaur combat Tamed and wild dinosaur damage and resistance Determines whether saddles, breeding and creature choice dominate fights.
Structures Structure damage and resistance; turret and explosive rules Sets the cost and duration of a raid.
Protection windows PvE/PvP timers, offline raid protection and any scheduled combat windows Prevents players from assuming a base is protected when it is not.
Decay Structure and creature decay behavior Explains when abandoned bases or tames can be removed.
Tribes and alliances Tribe-size limits, alliance rules and any beginner restrictions Stops social rules from changing after players have invested in a season.

For a casual PvP season, moderate rates and predictable protection are usually easier to balance than extreme boosts. If you permit offline raid protection, state its activation delay, coverage and exceptions. If you disable it, say so prominently rather than burying the decision in a configuration file.

PvE settings that improve quality of life without removing decisions

PvE servers do not need combat inflation to feel faster. Focus on the activities that create unavoidable waiting:

  • Increase taming enough that a failed attempt is recoverable in one play session.
  • Increase breeding and hatching only after checking imprint timing.
  • Use a moderate harvest increase so building still requires route planning and storage.
  • Keep loot quality high enough to reward caves and supply drops, but not so high that crafted gear is irrelevant.
  • Set decay and tribe limits to match how often the group can play; aggressive decay can erase a returning player’s progress.
  • Leave player-versus-player damage disabled when the server is advertised as PvE.

For a solo world, the Host/Local settings screen exposes controls for experience, difficulty, taming, harvesting, player, dinosaur and structure resistance, loot quality, imprint timers, maturation, hatching and related options. Change a slider, start the world, and verify the result before changing another category.

Configure Host/Local settings step by step

  1. Open ARK’s single-player or Host/Local menu and select the map you intend to play.
  2. Choose the PvE or PvP mode before adjusting rates.
  3. Set difficulty and the intended wild-level curve.
  4. Set XP, harvesting and taming multipliers.
  5. Set egg hatching, baby maturation and imprint timing as a group.
  6. Review player, dinosaur and structure damage and resistance values.
  7. Set loot quality, decay, tribe and protection options that the menu exposes.
  8. Start the world, tame a short-duration creature, harvest a known resource and inspect a loot source.
  9. Record the settings in a local rules document so a later reset can reproduce the same world.

Host/Local menus vary by ARK edition and platform. A missing slider does not mean the behavior cannot be configured on a dedicated server; it may require an administrator-accessible configuration file or a platform-specific limitation.

Configure a dedicated server safely

Dedicated servers generally expose the same major axes through GameUserSettings.ini, Game.ini, startup parameters and the host control panel. The exact layout depends on the hosting product and ARK edition, so use the current labels supplied by your host rather than copying a file from a different version.

  1. Stop the server cleanly. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten at shutdown.
  2. Back up the save and both configuration files. Keep a dated copy before every rate or rule change.
  3. Set the mode in the startup or server settings panel. Confirm whether the panel labels the mode PvE/PvP or exposes a startup parameter.
  4. Place rate and rule values in the file or panel section specified by the host. Do not put a setting in a similarly named section from another game or mod.
  5. Remove duplicate entries. A later duplicate can override the value you intended to use and makes troubleshooting difficult.
  6. Save with the required syntax and restart. Treat capitalization, decimal points and section names as significant.
  7. Verify in game. Test XP from a known action, harvest a known node, time a tame or hatch, inspect a loot source and test combat rules with consenting players.
  8. Publish a changelog. Include the date, setting name, old value, new value and reason for the change.

Keep configuration backups separate from save backups. A working save with an old configuration can still produce a different economy after a restore, and a correct configuration cannot recover a deleted world.

Common failures and fixes

The server still behaves like the old mode

Check the startup/server mode field first, then stop and restart the process. A PvE/PvP change is not equivalent to changing a damage multiplier, and a control-panel selection may overwrite a manual file edit.

Wild creatures are lower level than planned

Check difficulty and OverrideOfficialDifficulty, confirm that the map and edition support the intended curve, and inspect newly spawned creatures. Existing creatures may retain earlier levels, so use a controlled respawn test rather than judging from one old tame.

Breeding finishes before imprint requests can be completed

Your maturation speed is too high for the current imprint interval. Slow maturation, shorten the interval carefully, or choose a combination that permits at least one predictable care window for the creature type being raised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Loot feels stronger than the advertised rates

Loot quality is independent of XP, harvesting and taming. Review the separate loot setting, test several drop types and list any map- or mod-specific exceptions in the rules.

Players report that raids are impossible or trivial

Review player, dinosaur and structure damage and resistance as a set. Then test explosives, turrets, saddles, repairs and replacement costs. Do not correct a structure problem by silently increasing player damage; that can create a second imbalance.

A setting appears to do nothing

Confirm that you edited the active server’s files, used the correct section, removed duplicates, saved after stopping the server and restarted it. Mods, control panels and later configuration entries can override a value. Verify the result in game instead of trusting a file timestamp.

Platform and edition considerations

ARK: Survival Evolved is available on PC and consoles, with edition-specific menus and server capabilities. Nintendo’s official product information lists a Nintendo Switch game card edition and describes taming, breeding, crafting and online play. PlayStation and Xbox editions also list multiplayer support. Check the country, edition and current stock when purchasing a physical copy, and confirm that the server type you want is supported on that platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Console-hosted and single-player menus may expose fewer administrative controls than a PC dedicated server. If you need precise startup parameters, repeatable seasonal wipes, extensive rate documentation or configuration-file access, confirm those capabilities with the specific platform and host before promising them to players.

A repeatable launch checklist

  • Mode is explicitly PvE or PvP and matches the advertised rules.
  • XP, harvesting, taming, hatching, maturation and imprint values are recorded individually.
  • Difficulty, intended wild-dinosaur level and loot quality were tested on a fresh or disposable save.
  • Player, dinosaur and structure damage and resistance values were tested together.
  • Friendly fire, PvE/PvP timers, offline raid protection, decay, tribe limits and alliances are documented.
  • Save files and configuration files have dated backups.
  • A restart was completed after editing dedicated-server settings.
  • At least one representative tame, breeding cycle, harvest action and loot source was verified in game.
  • Players received a changelog before the season or world opened.

Final recommendation

For most private PvE groups, begin near 2× XP, 2–3× harvesting, 3–5× taming, 5–10× hatching and 8–15× maturation, then tune only the activity that remains slow. For PvP, stay nearer 2–3× XP and harvesting, 3–5× taming and moderate breeding boosts, while treating combat, protection, decay and tribe rules as part of the server’s published contract. Use the official 1×, Small Tribes and Beginner figures as recognizable anchors, test difficulty and loot on a fresh save, and never announce a setting until its in-game behavior has been verified.
