For most ARK: Survival Ascended servers, Better Breeding is the best starting point because it passes the highest wild levels and mutations from parents to offspring. Pair it with Breeding Assistant for restrained, tamed-creature stat visibility or Awesome SpyGlass! for a fuller inspection overlay. Better Breeding’s latest recorded main file is from May 26, 2025, so test it against your current ASA patch before putting it on a live server.

Why Better Breeding is the main recommendation
Better Breeding, by Silentrizz, directly addresses the most time-consuming part of an ASA breeding program: finding and preserving superior wild stats and mutations. Its stated behavior guarantees that the highest wild levels and mutations from the parents are transmitted to offspring. That can remove a large amount of repeated hatching and sorting when a tribe is establishing a line.
What the inheritance guarantee does—and does not—mean
- The guarantee concerns the highest wild levels and mutations present in the parents.
- It does not support transmission of post-tame levels. A creature’s levels gained after taming should not be treated as inherited by the mod.
- The mod changes the breeding outcome; it is not a replacement for a stat-inspection tool. If you need to see detailed stats while selecting breeders, use a separate inspection mod.
Popularity and maintenance
CurseForge listing snapshots show approximately 2.3 million to 2.6 million-plus downloads, and one CurseForge search summary reports more than 2.6 million. The snapshots are undated, so these figures indicate substantial adoption rather than a current, audited ranking.

The latest recorded main file is version 5.5-, dated May 26, 2025. Earlier version notes include v1.12 for crossplay in 2024 and v1.13 for PC in September 2024. No 2026 update is listed. ASA patches can alter mod APIs, creature data or server loading, so install it first on a test server and confirm that a newly hatched baby receives the expected stats before enabling it on a populated world.
License issue for paid servers
The CurseForge listing identifies a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported license. A private or free community server should still follow the attribution terms, while a server that charges players, sells access or otherwise operates commercially should obtain legal advice and permission before relying on the mod. Do not assume that a popular download automatically permits commercial use.

These two projects solve different information problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Breeding Assistant: restrained visibility
Breeding Assistant adds a HUD that exposes a tame’s stats and stat points. It is designed to reveal information for tamed and unconscious creatures, not wild creatures before they are knocked out. That restriction is useful for a server that wants to reduce guesswork after a tame is secured without turning every wild encounter into a fully transparent stat scan.

- Choose it when taming remains part of the server’s intended challenge.
- Use it to compare tamed candidates and organize a breeding line.
- Do not expect it to reveal a wild creature’s complete pre-knockout profile.
Awesome SpyGlass!: broad inspection
Several guides describe Awesome SpyGlass! as a near-essential breeding companion because it shows full creature stats, levels and tame information. One guide lists CurseForge ID 928548. The project page’s current details remain unverified, so confirm the current ID, ASA compatibility and feature set before adding it.
This is the better fit when a breeder wants comprehensive information at a glance and the server’s rules permit that level of visibility. It can make selecting wild breeders much faster, but that convenience also reduces the scouting and taming uncertainty that some communities deliberately preserve.

Dino Storage v2 and Super Cyro Storage
Large breeding programs create a storage problem even when the inheritance rules are unchanged. A guide describes Dino Storage v2 as placing creatures into “soul balls,” reducing the number of active tames and the associated server load. The guide’s description is not confirmed on the project page, so test retrieval, imprinting, ownership and baby interaction before storing valuable lines.
Super Cyro Storage was mentioned in a Steam discussion as a higher-level engram alternative. The discussion did not establish a complete feature list or current maintenance status. Treat it as a candidate for testing, not as a guaranteed replacement for the base game’s storage mechanics.

Structures Plus (S+)
S+ is not a breeding mod, but guides repeatedly place it beside breeding tools because improved structures can change the layout and workflow of a hatchery. One guide calls it the most transformative mod, and another describes it as the most-installed ASA mod. Those are guide characterizations, not the result of a published usage survey.
Some S+ features are being incorporated into the base game. Before installing it, compare the current ASA building options with the specific S+ functions your server needs; overlapping systems can create confusing menus, duplicate engrams or unnecessary update risk.

Both are listed as CurseForge projects, but their features are not evaluated in depth here. Read their current descriptions, dependency lists and change logs rather than adding them simply because their names sound relevant. If one of them duplicates a function already supplied by Better Breeding, Breeding Assistant or S+, keep the smaller set.
Mods that add new animals to breed
If your goal is variety rather than faster inheritance, creature-expansion mods are a separate category. They increase the number of species your breeding operation can support and may have their own balance, saddle and spawning considerations.

Additional Creatures 2: Wild ARK
One source describes more than 80 real-world and prehistoric creatures with taming and breeding. Because the figure and feature description come from a guide summary rather than a verified project page, check the current creature list, spawn behavior and map support before promising a particular species to players.
Gryphons
Gryphons adds gryphon tames with breeding and a saddle-crafting station, according to its description. Confirm that the saddle station, breeding timers and creature behavior work on the map and ASA patch you run.
Additions Ascended
Additions Ascended is described as adding seven creatures, including Ceratosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Deinotherium. Treat the count as version-dependent: creature packs can change their roster, balance and dependencies between releases.
How to choose a stack for your server
For a traditional, low-intervention server
Use Breeding Assistant if you want tamed-creature stat help without exposing wild stats before knockout. Add a storage mod only after measuring whether your current tame count and base layout are actually causing problems. Skip creature packs unless new species fit the server’s theme.

For a competitive stat-breeding server
Start with Better Breeding, then decide whether the broad information in Awesome SpyGlass! is acceptable. Document the inheritance behavior in your rules and test it with controlled parents before players invest in a line. Because Better Breeding does not transmit post-tame levels, keep a clear distinction between wild points, tamed results and later level-ups.
For a building-heavy breeding compound
Pair a single breeding mechanic mod with the minimum S+ or other structure features required by your design. Add storage if active tame counts or cryopod management are measurable bottlenecks. Avoid installing several overlapping quality-of-life packs merely to obtain one convenient structure.
For a creature-collection server
Choose one creature expansion first, verify its spawns and breeding behavior, and only then consider another. New species can affect map balance, saddle availability, server memory and player expectations more than a small HUD mod does.

ASA distributes server mods through CurseForge. The server owner adds project IDs to the server configuration; players joining a modded server download the required content automatically and do not subscribe manually.
- Back up the server. Copy the world save, configuration files and startup parameters before changing the mod list. Keep the backup until the server has loaded, saved and been tested.
- Confirm the project and ID. Open the current CurseForge page for each chosen mod, check that it targets ARK: Survival Ascended, read dependencies and copy the numeric project ID. The guide lists 928548 for Awesome SpyGlass!, but verify that listing before use. Do not guess an ID for Better Breeding or any other project.
- Set ActiveMods. In
GameUserSettings.ini, add a comma-separatedActiveModsvalue. For a server using only the listed Awesome SpyGlass! ID, the line would beActiveMods=928548. Append additional verified IDs in the same comma-separated format. - Use the launch parameter when your host requires it. Some panels and startup scripts expose the same setting as an
-ActiveMods=argument. Enter the verified IDs in the panel’s mod field or launch command rather than creating a second, conflicting list. - Save and restart completely. Stop the server, save the configuration, then perform a full restart. A soft reload may leave an old mod list in memory.
- Watch the startup log. Check for download failures, missing dependencies, version errors or a mod that prevents the world from loading. Do not invite players until the server reaches a normal, saved state.
- Join with a test account. Confirm that the client downloads the mods automatically, the relevant HUD or structures appear, and existing creatures and inventories remain intact.
Compatibility testing before a live rollout
Use a copy of the world or a disposable test server. A short test plan catches most dangerous failures without sacrificing a breeding line.
- Load the server with the complete proposed mod order.
- Tame or spawn two known parents with documented wild levels and mutation status.
- Produce several offspring and compare the displayed wild and mutation information with the behavior promised by the mod. For Better Breeding, specifically verify the highest wild levels and mutations and confirm that post-tame level-ups are not being treated as inherited.
- Test unconscious and tamed creatures with Breeding Assistant if installed, then test a wild creature before knockout to confirm the intended visibility boundary.
- Open the inspection overlay and creature inventories, retrieve any stored creatures, and place eggs or babies in the intended hatchery structures.
- Restart once more and verify that the same creatures, structures and configuration persist.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server will not start after adding a mod
- Remove the newest ID from
ActiveMods, restart and check the log to isolate the failing project. - Confirm that the ID belongs to an ASA project, not an ARK: Survival Evolved release.
- Check required dependencies and whether the host panel has its own separate mod field.
- Restore the backup if the world does not load cleanly; do not repeatedly restart a corrupted or partially migrated save.
Players cannot join or are stuck downloading
- Check that the server’s IDs are comma-separated and contain no accidental spaces, quotation marks or project names.
- Make sure the client and server are receiving the same current project files.
- Ask a test player to leave enough disk space for automatic downloads and to restart the ASA client if a cached download is incomplete.
Breeding results look wrong
- Record the parents’ wild levels, mutations and post-tame levels separately; Better Breeding does not promise post-tame level transmission.
- Remove overlapping breeding mods and test with Better Breeding alone.
- Recheck compatibility after an ASA patch. Better Breeding’s last recorded main file predates 2026, so a previously working configuration may need an update or rollback.
The server becomes slower after the mod stack grows
- Measure active tame counts, structure counts and save times before and after each addition.
- Keep one mod per function where possible: one inheritance tool, one stat-information tool and one storage solution.
- Remove creature packs or structure systems that do not serve the server’s theme instead of accepting unexplained lag.
Performance, compatibility and governance rules
Every additional mod expands the number of assets, hooks and update dependencies the server must load. Stacking many mods can hurt performance and compatibility even when each project works correctly on its own. A small, purpose-built set is safer than installing every popular recommendation.
- Pin a known-good mod list and record each project version and installation date.
- Test updates on a copy of the world before changing the live server.
- Tell players which mods expose wild stats, alter inheritance or add creatures so the server’s rules are transparent.
- Review each project’s license. Better Breeding’s CC BY-NC 3.0 terms are especially important if access to the server is sold or bundled with paid services.
- Remove abandoned or redundant projects rather than leaving them enabled “just in case.”

The safest overall plan is incremental: begin with the smallest mod that solves the server’s actual breeding problem, test it on the current ASA build, and add storage, inspection, structures or creatures only when a specific need justifies the extra compatibility surface.
